Sweet Child O' Mine - Middle School Band Cover

- For my school's "holiday" concert, our band director thought that it would be fun if we were to do a cover of the famous Guns N' Roses song, "Sweet Child O' Mine." When our band has covered songs in the past, we typically have dressed according to the time period and genre of music. When we played Van Halen's "Jump", we dressed in crazy 80's bright colors, including a couple wigs. For this song, our band director told us to come in black leather and the whole punk look. The holiday concert is the biggest performance of the year, with about every family at the school attending. To fit all of these people, the concert takes place in a giant church near our school. Needless to say, playing this song for such a large crowd was immensely fun.
To those saying the director looked like a clown, made the show about him, needed to stay out of the way, etc, you are wrong. This man helped make this performance something these kids will remember their whole life. He got the crowd enthusiastic which in turn encouraged the band. He was amazing. And so were the kids playing. I'm 68 years old and some of my best memories are of my time in the high school band. And we had a director very much like this man. These kids are so fortunate to have this man as their tescher. In my opinion the show would NOT have had the same impact if the director had stood there still, in front of the his music stand with his sheet music, waving his baton to keep time with the band.
i agree i am a 68 year old and if i had a band teacher like that who knows
The band director was AWESOME and encouraging his kids. They all did fabulous!
If I had been there, I'd be doing the same 😂
Who can sit there like a rock with this playing? Not me
Great teacher!!! He is involved with his students and wants to get the crowd behind these young musicians.
I am lying in bed feeling bad after a dizzy faint spell and enjoying this.
I 1000% agree! I will be 60 this year & our high school band directors were absolutely awesome. They helped us kids, in the band, color guard & drill team during marching band season so enthusiastic & proud of what we all were accomplishing together & the memories have lasted for all of us that were involved. Our band directors were brothers & the older brother even put his house up for collateral to help make sure we were able to pay for our trip to compete & March in the Orange Bowl Parade in 1978. There were almost 200 kids in the band & another 100 with the color guard & drill team. We sold everything under the sun to raise money for the trip, chartered a plane to Miami, came out 5th of 10 bands chosen to compete & our drum majors came in first place! Talk about being proud of all of our hard work & it wouldn’t have happened without Karl & Thom Recktenwald! 🪈 🎺 🥁 🎷 😊
I don't know the teacher/director but his enthusiasm shows me he cares about those children.
I think the hype mans name is Billy Corgan
Yes, whoever he is, he looks very proud and supportive of those kids. Great performance.
Sure is a lot better than the stupid songs we had to play while I was in band class!
we need music in our lives and the youth can greatly benefit
Too right. The teacher was great and got the audience involved, I wish my music teacher/ lessons were like theirs back in the 70s. All we got was a triangle, tambourine, or maracas oh and the ear bending recorder.
I will add that the professor with his enthusiasm carried the weight/burden of panic performance on behalf of the band, and therefore removing the stress from the musicians, allowing them to be spontaneous, specially from the singer, who was having amazing eye contact and body language with the audience. And btw, for the first 5 seconds I couldn't believe the quality of her voice. Bravo and well done to both performers and musical director, all of you were amazing!
The guitar is front and center but WOW, that guy on drums is killing it!!!!
Totally 👍🤟
Thrashed 4 sure
The guy on drums posted this video.
Amazing
Killing the drums?
I thought he did a good job..
I love how the singer slowly gets into it. She steadily gets better and better
I would like to see more of her
Nervousness just faded away to pure enjoyment. She did great.
I love the drummer throwing up the stick, that was a boss move.
Damn that kid on guitar absolutely killed it
She's great, the singer on the other hand is straight butt. 100%
That's what Slash looks like when he takes off his magic hat.
The drummer was great, too! They were all great!
Yep, spot on. Used to play lead myself, but was net that good in Middle School. It took to Junior Year in High School for me to get to that caliber. She could star in any band. The drummer is good, but this is not the most challenging drum piece. He may be as good as her, but would need a tougher piece to know. The bass was good. The singer was ok for age, with more vocal lessons she could become great. But as a team and for their age they were OUTSTANDING.
Absolutely!! Didn't go unnoticed that's for sure. How could you not notice? However I've always said drummers are falling into the background and not appreciated enough. I played in Band to not drums . Always wish I would have but I play other instruments. The guitar players are always noticed. @@ellenpapuga7469
THIS WAS SO BOSS!!! That director was perfect. He brought that show home. Kept rhe kids from feeling awkward up there. Hes exactly the kind of teacher i would want leading my band! And this little girl has some powerful vocals!! Shes on her way!!!
Not very powerful at all, she could barely be heard.
@@su-rv2uqI heard her and she was awesome!
She was fine. Have you ever done that up on stage in front of your family and friends? They're in junior high...! They all did great!
Yes, they are middle schoolers, but it was excellent even so. And the director absolutely made the show! The young lady did great on that ending! I’ve sung that song. It’s not easy.
This music director for this school is what we need in all the schools...Kids were awesome.💜🤍
Fr 😭 they're so lucky!
Dewey Finn!
Wow, the music director is everything! And the kids did an awesome job!
we had similar back in 1971 and the school band was doing Frank Zappa. In my son's era, circa 1990 they were also doing G&R in middle school.
Imagine all the people …
The director was there to keep the kids from being too nervous and support them with his enthusiasm. You could tell that the girl singing needed that little extra help. She sang beautifully, but watched him often. He did great and WOW, these young adults/kids are amazing!!!!!! I feel they gave the professionals a run for their money! I am keeping this video in my playlist, it's that good!
They aren't young adults. They are children.
@@su-rv2uqyou can’t deny they are so very talented.
So true!!!
Too bad classroom teachers don't show that enthusiasm. Sure would of heped me back in the day!
She has an amazing voice.
As a former guitar player....kid on lead guitar and the drummer had me searching my house for a lighter-1970's concert style! They were all great--absolutely but the lead guitarist and drummer were out of this world especially when you consider their age. Rock on y'all. And this Music Director/Band Director whatever his title deserves a $20k a year raise. He believes in these kids and it shows.
Agreed. The band was amazing. The singer was good too but the band was on poiny.
This comment!!!
He sure *does* ‼️
*KUDOS* to him ..as well as these mega-talented kids!
Not enough credit is given to the teachers who inspire & motivate our kids!😊

This guy really enjoys his work. What a shame not every teacher brings that kind of love to the table.

The teacher kinda resembles Michael Stipe (R.E.M.) while performing on stage.

Amen Susan !!!!
We need more teachers and band directors like this man with the energy and love of the kids and teaching, the world would be a better place.
That drummer and lead guitarist were awesome! You can tell they've been practicing hard. Good job to all. Guns & Roses would be proud! And to the teacher, thank you for the school of ROCK! 🤟

Goosebumps. These kids are doing more at their age than some do their whole lives.
That little girl has amazing pitch control for being so young.
This is how a motivated teacher acts , involved and I guarantee you his students love him. The performance shows, IT WAS GREAT!
Ask the kids what they think about the band director. He has probably changed all of their lives and when they are crushing it years from now they’ll look back and thank that guy.

OMG! Chill bumps and tears for these awesome kids and the music teacher guy! The lead guitarist reminded me of my daughter in middle school who rocked the whole school. Music education is soooo important for brain development, and it gives the musicians confidence in themselves and brings happy camaraderie to the other students who cheer them on. Cheers to the school administration for pushing the kids toward excellence with this kind of performance. Bravo!
Excellent show and e wry one benefits. We need more schools who give the time, money & attention to music for kids. These other interests need encouragement & deserve support by everyone. Many kids have nothing outside of their school work. Things aren’t always as they appear to be. As long as we can continue to give Countries billions of dollars today, 2024, to help them after WW2, I’m in favor of every school program possible for our kids. I’m sick of Americans’s kids are doing without while we send our tax dollars to their corrupt Countries. We have to start taking better care of our Children.,

Right! The girl singing is good, but the band is pretty awesome.
Guitar and drums were awesome, I feel that the vocals weren't strong enough in comparison to them to do that song justice
Bass play was thumping. The girl may become the next Mazzy Star. Ya never know

It was cute how you could hear the nerves in her voice at first and then bam she was rocking it ❤
At this point, her voice is just not quite strong enough to pull it off - but devoting years of practice in the future, will pay big dividends !!
Just think of being able to say you were a fan now when she is headlining a major rock band … think about if you had seen Amy Lee rocking it at her age

Dang. They brought me to tears. Never underestimate the talent in a 12 year old ! 🎸🤘🤙😍🎶🎵😍
I'm 62 y/o and expected these kids to butcher this song like other bands do. They didn't! The guitarist, and drummer hit every note and beat! The little girls voice made my old bones want to get up and rock out like we did in highschool 😂. The music teacher was feeling every note throughout the entire song and that told the kids they were doing an incredible job. When I heard the first notes and the drums came into play my eyebrows raised up along with my excitement 😂. That girl has a really nice singing voice, a real talent! The guitarist also has big things ahead!
The singer doesn’t have the pipes to go further. The guitarist is definately talented, though!
The singer just needs training and needs to hit puberty
Idk, with the right training & practice I thought she had some potential. Singing like Axl Rose from a little girls body is not really a fair litmus test.
I was most impressed by the singer. Kudos to the music teacher for not trying to make her Axl Rose it. A surefire way to destroy the voice of someone of middle school years.
Incredible performance, and _the director is the only one responding appropriately to the music!_ He alone is doing it right, encouraging the kids, loving their work, and his! Magnificent.

She has the central riff completely nailed.
Slash would’ve like this.
Her slip was what made it cute and to remind us that these were just kids nailing a song that incredibly talented adults needed studio editing to accomplish

Are you kidding me? I realize that there are tons of talented kids out there who are musically gifted and who put in the time necessary to excel in their crafts. Some are savants. They play an instrument almost as soon as they come from their mother's wombs. But for kids this age to perform this well in a group is outstanding. Was definitely moved and inspired. With the popularity of Reaction Videos Channels today, and the younger generation being introduced to classic rock and good music in general, we see a rise in interest of getting away from the junk that is being produced today. I am coming across online more and more of today's youth picking up the mantle of classic rock + and
tearing it up. Some with original music. While I don't listen to much secular music anymore, I do watch a lot of Reaction Videos Channels that react to classic rock + . It is a blast watching the emotional reactions to music I was brought up with. Many times the hosts cry from listening to a great Pink Floyd song, or some other groups song.
We were blown away by the likes of Pink Floyd and Yes and Led Zeppelin and Jethro Tull just as these Reaction Videos Channels hosts are today.
I will be curious to see if anything comes from this band in the future. The music teacher deserves much praise for what he has accomplished.

Way to go, kids. Bravo to you and the music director. This is why we need the arts in school.
When I was in school, my band director was a stout little man with a grey crew cut and sensible polished shoes. But he had a passion for his work, and a dedication to his kids. He saw to it that every single kid in that band knew their importance-- as musicians, and as individuals. Ours was a tiny little school in a tiny little town. But he did some amazing things with that little group. He was funny and wise and he lit a fire and drive in many of us that carried us into adulthood. And BTW, junior high can be a really hard time for kids to experience the vulnerability of performing in front of peers and parents, or to let themselves explore their full abilities. So never underestimate the influence of a teacher who's willing to go all out for his or her kids; who's willing to think outside the box, and who's willing to bend and twist the subject matter to make it resonate with his or her students. Those teachers are often the difference between success or failure in a kid/ adult. Great job, kids! Amazing! You and your teacher are lucky to have each other!
That’s really beautiful and thoughtful and I bet these kids love their teacher, too. He obviously is super proud and supportive of them.

I've been trying to get my granddaughter to listen to more of the 70's early 80s, and she says it's terrible maybe some day she will realize it is great music oh by the way she's almost a teenager.
I think we're safe for the most part. Don't see very many Saliva or Creed covers. Best genre of music hands down
I’m a 97 year old black man and this is so badass! Rock and Roll kids
I’m surprised you even know how to operate a computer

The band director encouraged and energized the kids in the band. This was amazing!!!!!!!!!
Yep…..those that said negative on this….shame on them. Those kids obviously looked up to him and his cue’s.
@@pamelahogan7421 Haters will always hate just ignore them but that guy brought out the best in all the kids, taking away their nerves so not only did they perform better but was able to enjoy it too. Wish there was more like him. 🤚🤚🤚
I love the band director. He was awesome encouraging those kids.
Totally agree ❤had to do that role myself a few times 😂
He looked like Lex from Smallville.
