thanks for this. i live for the fog, and I'm from Marin County. I traveled W. Ridgecrest hundreds of times on my mountain bike. I wish I'd been a photographer back then. now i live in northern san diego county, and miss my beloved marin county. I try to get up there once or twice a year. bolinas ridge, ridgecrest, phoenix lake, kent pump road, china camp, cataract trail are my favorite places to shoot.
Thanks so much for giving a look. Watching the fog roll over that ridge never seems to get old. You know what though...it now gets a little crowded up there for my taste. Enjoy the fact that you probably had it all to yourself on those evenings back in the day. :)
OMG, I love your work. When I was a kid I came to the Bay Area to visit my Grandmother in San Bruno for the summer. I remember by late afternoon the fog rolling in and it seemed like a wave washing ashore. I lived in the Bay Area as an adult from 1995 - 2003 and loved sitting up a Cal State Hayward watching the fog roll over the peninsula like a giant wave. Thank you so much for your video. I never heard anyone else refer to the fog as a wave. It sure brings back wonderful memories. Amazing Video :)
Thanks so much for the kind words and sharing your memories. I sometimes get tired of the trek up to the top of Tam but I don't ever seem to get tired of watching the fog roll in.
Hands down best video ive ever seen about what its like to go chase fog on Tam dude, I loved it. Awesome music, v/o, and the timelapses were incredible.
I just discovered your channel, 2 for 2 great videos. Your vision for the shot comes across very clearly with just enough technical description while not bogging the story down with it
Thank you so much for the keen feedback Frank. It's much appreciated. I don't think I'm ever going to be able to produce a ton of videos but I do want to do more.
Everything about this video is beautiful... just as a process piece it stands up as a wonderful look into the mind of a landscape photographer who loves Mt. Tamalpais as much as you do. But that's not all because your work is also exceptional. Bravo! ... almost makes me want to get back into Timelapse photography. :) And shout out to Floyd in that last shot!!!!
@@DavidSafanda last time I had a chance at the wave on the old military foundation… The fog was there , but literally a weather guy told us that the high pressure wasn’t strong enough a loft to create the wave … It’s been a while since I’ve got good conditions there … I live in Sonoma county so it’s not to bad of a drive and it always gorgeous there fog or no fog
@@alansarpy Hi Al. You live in a beautiful area but yeah Tam is a bit far to be chasing conditions that may or may not cooperate. The low level fog in Sonoma Country during the winter with the rolling green hills...that's the best!
Love this video, the imagery is fantastic and you've done a great job of putting the feeling of capturing the fog into words. I'm new to the game but I really feel like it has become a bit of an addiction.
Awesome! This is so amazing. Im planning to take some photos of Mt Tam, but a little bit of confused on the maps. Do go to Mt Tam or Mt Tam state park? Thank you
Thanks for the kind words. The images in this video were captured in a variety of locations on Mt.Tam. It really depends on the conditions on any given day but I would map to the top of Mt.Tam and stop where ever it looks good.
Thanks for the kind words. Honestly I pay almost no attention to shutter speed when shooting conditions like this. I usually put the camera in aperture priority and let the camera choose shutter speed. If the shutter speed gets too long I'll adjust iso. Hope that make some sense
Wow! Stunning images and timelapses! I'm coming to visit this area (from New York) in December, and I'm wondering whether there might be a chance I can watch this incredible phenomenon. Do you know if it happens in winter as well?
Thanks for the kind words Roberto. We do get fog in the winter but it's a bit different. The level of the fog tends to be much lower and it's generated inland rather than over the ocean. So, unfortunately you likely won't be able to experience the exact conditions but it can still be really nice. The hills start to turn green and it's just a different vibe.
@@RobertoRuizPhilosophyMonkey Thanks so much for giving a watch. I've been meaning to do a winter fog video. Just haven't managed to pull it together yet.
This is just so beautiful and calming. I want to hopefully make it in March. Do you think that's a good time? And what ND filter stop would you recommend to create such a dreamy effect?
Hi David. Thanks so much for kind words. I'd love for you to get a taste of it. I have to admit that March is probably not the best time of year. It's not impossible to get good fog in March but it's more of a gamble. Truth be told it's a bit of a gamble anytime of year but June through August is usually when we get the most consistent fog that is the right height for Tam. Don't let that stop you though. Tam is fun anytime of year. You might have wild flowers in March. A 10 stop ND is usually what I use while the sun is still up and it's fairly bright. As it gets darker I switch to a 6 stop or 3 stop ND. Hope that helps somewhat.
@@DavidSafanda thank you very much! That’s very helpful. I appreciate you taking the time to respond. I will make sure to go during that time then. Any nice nearby spots you recommend going to? I’m thinking of going there 3 days.
Thanks so much for the kind words. You can see images on my website at davidsafanda.com/photography.
