I will say something Tom. I remember back in 2019 ish when you were stood on a balcony when doing a domestic job and said there is a whole world out there and you want a slice of that pie and looking at what you have achieved since proves you want the whole thing and you are well on the way to getting it. Well done Tom 👏 it's better to go all in or go home.

I really think it would be worth having AED defibrillators on all your trucks but especially the bucket truck as you are going to be working in industrial high voltage areas and on the railways. AEDs are lifesaving pieces of kit and you never know when you or someone else might need it…

Treat yourself ,your associates ,your business and your clients , with as much professionalism as you can muster .Get proper education for the tasks you intend to perform . Buy quality equipment and don't half ass it .Train quality associates to do quality work ...success is practically handed to you. ( Yes ,with very hard work and long hours ) . Must be different from UK to US because our Ford Transits come standard with A/C on their bucket truck models. But it's now an OSHA requirement too. I work on the roads for a living and I'm in the Pacific NW so we got similar weather to the UK. My dump truck doesn't have A/C as it was ordered before the law change. It is miserable in the spring and summer especially if you're doing something like pulling shoulders where we are moving very slowly. Kudos to you for making a/c a priority. Your crews will thank you.

Great post as always Tom. I’m a joiner and carpenter in London and went in to contracting when you were really getting established (2017) and have fallen well behind in terms of establishing a business instead of a self employed job. I’ve regretted that decision in a sense but was the correct thing at the time for my family. The truck is lovely but I listen out for the business and financial aspects more. It’s great to see you pushing on and developing, good luck!

If you have dead locks on the van I would make sure they are used when the vans is ticking over for the mewp because I know a company who’s staff got distracted by some people trying to start a fight and then another member of the group robbed the tools from side door of the van. It happened down the round from you in Neasden.

Great set up, fascinating seeing your business progress. I looked at getting an electric Master as Renault didn’t do an EV Trafic. The quoted range was 75miles but with a real world range of 50 miles! Also £60K plus, didn’t make sense financially or practically. Ended up with a diesel Trafic, and it’s been great so far.

  • @tysondundas1947

With the MEWP, winch, full tank of fuel, driver, passenger & racking what payload is left? Ahd how much has to be over which axle? The DVSA know most MEWPs run over weight and like to pull then on road side inspections, remember the driver and company can get points / fines for running over weight and they go on each axle and overall weight so the driver could end up with 3 probation issues against them.
As you are running commercially with the van it being over 3.5t do you have an o'licence? If running it as plant you can't carry waste and you can only do your own work ( only suitable for councils that look after thier own lighting or BT). Also the driver will need to be on tachograph.
Pulling DNO fuses is another situation that requires appropriate training. Look up G39 certification. (Good luck getting 80amp fuses in standard street lighting cutouts 😉)
The cones need to a minimum of 450mm even at 30mph
I love how you like your kit but i suspect you are trying to do to much with the van. You should streemline the MEWP for its basic work and use one of your other vans as a support vehicle.

Talking about those Van battery problems - I bet this mewp has a bigger battery because of all the extras to a regular Renault master..
I’m not an auto electrician either! But I do know that they do put extra batteries/ heavy duty for sound systems campers BT vans etc
Maybe that’s why the standard batteries keep dying?

So glad to see more and more content Tom… really happy to see you pop up in my notifications all the time lately… you do right to get out of the domestic sector mate, I heard an ad on the radio up here in County Durham for an electric company offering a full house rewrite in two days or less and they said from as little as £1799.00 I sh*t you not… this is why hard working and genuinely skilled trade people such as yourself and your staff are finding it hard in the domestic sectors of the trades because you get companies like that undercutting and using shoddy workers with little to zero skills on a job that should be done by someone with a few years on the job under their belts at least. Hope you manage to come through on the other side and flourish for many many years to come because my life wouldn’t be the same without my fix or videos from Thomas Nagy and Co…

Back in the States I worked out of a van doing 2-way radio repairs out in the field. What I wish I had was one of those hot water sinks! Can you supply me with a link there in the UK that sells the hot water sink as well as the soap dispenser. I am still out as to the solid bulkhead dividers on these commercial vans. Its great for security but at times I would like the ability to access the work area from the cab. The dividers sold in the states come in various configurations solid, expanded metal upper area, with door or without and various locking options for the doors. The interrior of the work area is very nice however my preference is white to distribute my work lighting inside the van. One needs all the lighting one can get when working on electronics out in the field. Even went as far as to adding an Espar diesel heater for those cold Midwest winters (wont buy Chinesium junk).

Would be cool to have a Boom lift you can tow behind any Van to bring to a job site.
Then you could have way more options and not rely on a single Van. I watched a couple videos and seems to hitch and unhitching is pretty quick.

Just out of curiosity Tom, Have you got clients lined up for the highway work.. or are you just taking your chances? Anyhow good luck. You & Residual current are putting out some decent content.

can i make a suggestion putting a first aid sign above the first aid kit so as to make it readily identifiable in an emergency

Just worth pointing out that the Commerical Operators licence has now been fazed out and replaced with the European regulations so anyone can undertake commercial work without a licence :). They now have new licences for specific use cases but if you've got a small enough drone, you can fly nearly anywhere :)

I have the same van , they are nice vans but just make sure you do some motor way miles because you will have problems with dpf . I have have had a blocked dpf at 5k miles and now the same at 9.5k . The dpfs are small and get blocked quick .

Mate, get yourself a solo smoke pole instead of those sabres, that way you get the thermal tester too and you don't need a ladder for warehouse tests

@@joefrayling9263 yeah not cheap but mate the time they save if your testing a lot of commercial warehouses its worth every penny. The newest one looks great all fits in a backpack.
Edit: that Tom could tie down with the sortimo to stop it flying around the van 🤣

All the law and regulations with drones changed the beginning of this year might want to make sure your license is still valid

@@rsdelectrical To be fair I've not done street lighting since the late 90's. I wonder if its a regional thing then, certainly Durham and Newcastle area was all T+E

I was thinking ... if you had a small trailer to put all the signage in ..and keep in... it would be easy to hook on and go....but then it may not be the best idea in small cramped areas...

The van is magnificent. Right now, everything is nice and clean, with showroom shine and that new smell too. If it were mine, I would be paranoid about trying to keep it that way 😁. Can the signage be stowed in the bucket?
