How to make the best noises in your 2018 RS3!

- I go through the top 5 interesting sounds I've discovered how to make in my Audi RS3.
There's also a bit or anti-lag/rolling launch control action, because why not?
Cameras: Google Pixel XL, GoPro Hero 3.
Music: Dj Quads - Blushes: / blushes Авто/Мото
What other ways are there to get fun sounds out of this car?
If you want to have the best downshift backfires, put it in Individual, all settings auto except the Exhaust sound Dynamic. Also drive it in sport automatic mode, that way the crackles fron 4->3->2 are the best 😁
Greetings from Switzerland ✌️
Definitely gonna try this.
@@KoryNunn also try it out driving around normally in manual mode I think it sounds event better than dynamic. I don't know why though... Audi Drive Select in the RS3 is a big mystery
By normal, do you mean 'auto'?
@@KoryNunn no I meant put it in the mode described above and then drive around with the transmission in manual mode (that's what "drive it around normally" should mean)
Maybe my english isn't the best 😅
Thanks Kory. The shift into neutral to rev the engine had me perplexed. Only owned the car a few weeks. Now I have a smile on my face as I put it BACK in dynamic after shifting to neutral! Thanks for the grins!
I’ve owned my RS3 for awhile now and never knew about the rolling anti lag trick! Thanks for the video 😮
I freaked out when I discovered what happens when you floor it at 60mph in D. For a split second I thought the clutch broke or something then I realized it was a freaking rolling launch control kinda thing. xD Nice video once again! Nice to see that there are other people out there too that are trying to figure out the spiritual side of the RS3's sound life, which tbh is a little complicated to understand!
Cool share! Now I need an RS3 lol! I've been watching as many videos as I can...current 15' STI owner looking for new snow machine.
Bought 2018 daza yesterday - love it! Really useful info on your channel will give these a try!
Cool video, I’ve had my RS3 sedan since May and already 10k km. Had a stage 1 eTuners Motorsport tune for about 2 months now and loving it, always learning different ways to get the best performance with driving techniques. I’m 50/50 driving in S or D in Dynamic, manual very rarely THB.
Sometimes I drive mine in auto just to make sure it still works :P
I've been waiting for a video on this topic. Excellent work mate😉
Thank u! That neutral move is huge. More videos like this please :)
Great video, I bought a valve controller and some of the sounds at low rpm are pretty impressive
First, great video.
That last trick I learned when finally being able to pass someone. I knew the DSG wouldn’t kick in fast enough if I just floored it so I downshifted myself and then smashed it. I was like, “wow they programmed it with a passing mode that really lets them know how crazy they made me.” 😂 I absolutely love this thing.
My God... that rolling launch control. Thank you for showing me this looks like I'm going to have a little fun after work tonight
Michael Vitaterna just found this video too hopefully I don’t get a ticket on my way to the gfs lol
OMFG thanks Kory. I got an rs3 recently (i also live in brisbane) and it kept fucking with my head that my car just starts "LC" when i'm just trying to aggressively downshift for a turn but instead gives me the LC sound (as well as just kind rolling at the same speed). I thought my gearbox got fucked. Now that you actually told me that it's intentional LC while rolling, you saved me a massive headache. I kept complaining to audi it kept "holding revs" sometimes when i would downshift instead of actually just going but they just reported back to me that there are no problems and don't get what I am talking about. Thank you!
I’ve just got my RS3 and changing from s3 to s2 in towns makes one of the best noises IMO
if you give it throttle and change it from d to S it can make a pop sound dont know if its safe or not
@@Dulc3B00kbyBrant0n I did this couple days ago and my check engine light came on
my dream car!
The sound is 🔥
Will check back here when I pick mine up later this year 😁👍
I noticed one a few times last night in mine. While cruising in 4th gear around 3400 RPM then you downshift, as it blips it pops real loud. Was able to do it a few times in a row. I’ve also noticed it in other gears but around 3400 RPM. Mine is a 2019 US spec (DAZA) with the catless midpipes. I have also tried some of the things you’ve done in this video and they work on mine! 2018’s can pop a little bit more from factory but with 19’s they’ve sort of toned them down a bit.
Hit the nail on the head with these sounds mate. Personally my favourite is just sport auto mode and the downshift from 4>3>2>1 always see heads turning!
Kinda nerdy but 100% awesome. I'm putting my order in soon and I'm so excited. And here I was thinking I was cool cause I can get my S3 to drop 2 gears by double clicking a paddle and this dude turned his RS3 into a pipe organ.
Might be the same on the S3, but on the RS3 you can hold the paddle to make the car go as far as it can down or up gears, so if you're cruising in 5th at say 60, hold down, it'll skip down to 2nd.
@@KoryNunn no shit? Learn something new everyday. I'll try to tomorrow, and if the dsg blows all over the road I'm sending you he bill! Haha
Hey kory
Can you repeat how to make this backfire?
I understood 2000 RPM and then one gear down, right?
And which mode and manual or automatic setting from the gearbox
Best regards from Germany
Haha thanks kory for the anti lag trick I never knew or found it before. I know what Im trying tomorrow morning! Like you said sport auto downshift 3 - 2 can get some gunshot akin to the pfl 8v (albeit rarely happen)
I bet you could provoke cracks in auto going 3-2 by just braking firmly through the downshift.
@@KoryNunn well anti lag works as intended. Awesome features wonder why it was implemented haha!
yolo mode how much brake ? hard or very soft brake ?
Love it mate. Very sound understanding of all this cars quirks! 👍🏼
Literally subscribing and liking to hopefully get you a bit of money so you can mod your whip since it shows you truly love this car 🚗 💕
How often did the downshift crackles happen? Seems like the PFL models do it more frequently regardless of RPM and gear. Will be in the market soon and was set on a FL model but the sound of the PFL has left me undecided.
Pfls seem to crackle almost every time on a downshift.
Fls almost never do.
That said, fls are better in basically every other way, they are significantly faster and handle better. I'm optimistic that I can put crackles into my fl.
Good stuff man
Thanks!
Each time you start the car, you need to cycle back through to Dynamic to get ludicrous mode exhaust sounds (or is that just n=my car?).
Yep same for all rs3s, it's a little bit annoying.
Does the rolling launch count as a launch control in the counter? Since each RS3 only has 200 launches on the tcu?
I'm pretty sure I've done it more than 200 times lol.
The Back fire - so its 2000rpm in 2nd/3rd? Downshift to 1st and hit the breaks? I love that noise. More than the crackles...
I just have tested that. 3 to 1 and break. Awesome :D
Might have missed it in the video or comments but do you have any aftermarket catback or dp?
Car is absolutely stock. Sadly I think this will be the last model that sounds this good without modification.
TBH ... to make nice noises you need to play with the gas pedal wich makes you go more frequently to the gas station ! Story of my life with my A3 hahaha
You missed out the launch sounds mate..
Does the 8v rs3 share the same exhaust and sound exactly like the new rs3? I realise the 8v is not producing the same hp. Thanks
It's not quite the same, the pre facelift sounds a little better than the early facelift (my one) and that one sounds better than the current version that has a particulate filter.
@Spongebob Schwanzkopf are you saying my personal preference is incorrect?
2 to 3 3/4 throttle is good... but my favorite is full send 3 to 4 and then to 5. On downshift at 100 km/h 4 to 3
What is this, a fucking instrument? Yes, yes it is.
Does the RS3 have a limited slip differential as standard?
No
how much better is the sound of the preface lift (2015-2017) ? Interested to have your opinion :)
If the FL is an 8/10, the pfl is a 9/10
@@KoryNunn the prl ones with the non aluminum engine block have a higher pitched v10ish noise
Have you done anything to the exhaust
Nope, completely stock. It does have the "performance" exhaust as all Australian delivered cars do.
Im wanting to buy an MT16. do you need to have the sports exhaust for it to sound this way or basic exhaust is fine?
I wouldn't even consider an rs3 without either a sports exhaust or aftermarket.
@@KoryNunn thanks for replying mate. I'm confused. Everywhere I read suggests milltek cat back for that machine gun sound.
Yeah so I'm sure you would get a good sound out of a modified exhaust, but if you are leaving it stock, you will want the sports exhaust.
@@KoryNunn thanks mate
Sports exhaust and straight pies it is
I'm a lot more interested in getting the sunroof in my RS3 to stop creaking than I am coaxing new sounds out of it. My brand new 70k Audi sounds like the damn Santa Maria driving around town.
I've already had it at the dealership once, but it's still doing it. Apparently the next step involves taking the headliner out, which I'm not even remotely stoked about. It seems really unlikely it'll get put back together as well as from the factory.
Is you car pre or post OPF? I pick my new one up on Saturday!
Pre filter, I'm hoping the post filter rs3s still sound good.
@@KoryNunn me too! I'll find out on Saturday I guess!
is this post june 2018 so it applies to the 2019s as well?
Not sure if it would apply to the model with the particulate filter, mine is the first gen facelift without the exhaust restrictions.
@@KoryNunn USA doesn't have opf but the pops and crackles are gone in park and the flaps aren't always open.
How about this: dynamic sport in auto. Upshift manually with the paddle to something fairly unreasonable like 3rd or 4th at low speed. Then as your decelerating, pull back the stick to re-engage auto and have it down shift. **Crack**
Add a cts intake and the car sound giggle factor doubles.
Does it sound a bit like this? ruclips.net/video/bzD95PAhEog/видео.html
My US spec 18 RS3 use to pop and bang for about the first few months and then the fun noises just vanished. It's like the sports exhaust just stopped being sporty. I tried different fuel brands and driving techniques with no luck.
That's weird, maybe something is up with your valves, do you notice any difference in volume as you cross above 3000rpm?
@@KoryNunn valves are working good and I've currently been running the "valve mod" so they remain open.
Did it start doing being not as pronounced after you unplugged the valves? If you not running a valve controller like the ASR one that’s probably why.
rolling antilag ? downshift and then full gas ?
Yep, wait about half a second before flooring it.
Called rolling launch, doesn't have anti lag
Would it just be the delay in dual clutch never the less it’s mad.
How do you do that sound at 3:59 to 4:06 please do a video about that
He’s just changing up gears it’s a dsg fart
@@J053H4F do people not like this sound?
My favorite type of farts. 👀 🏎💨
Hey man i just found this video but i would like to let you know that i have subscribed to your channel cause 1 your australian 2 you live in brisbane near me 3 im buying a rs3 at the age of 20 ahhah
Nice work. Looks like you've already been hooked on 5cyls with your xr5.
@@KoryNunn yeah mate that is in the work shop at the moment man going to reach 300kw hopefully haha but yeah rs3 is my dream car
Does the 2017/18 model have a soft limiter?
Yes, even with the DS1 it seems to have a limiter in neutral. Haven't found a setting for the limit if there is one.
@@KoryNunn Thx alot for the answer mate, I want to buy the 8V FL but that soft limiter is not bad isnt it? It goes till 4000 rpm and sounds awesome more than enough?
@@theraptorhd513 I don't think what the car sounds like when you sit in a car-park free-revving it should be a significant purchasing consideration, so I my opinion may not be the best one to inform you.
The car sounds amazing in motion, and decent enough when not.
When in second gear, around 15-20mph very low revs (Sorry, we Brits don't use meaningless kph) start to depress the throttle and down shit into first. Many times I've had loud pops and bangs from the exhaust doing this. Might have to play around with the speed/revs when doing this.
Sounds like it's the same thing as the anti lag. How many furlongs per candle is that?
Down shit? Haha
Clearly my computer has tourettes lol
I love this video and I love the RS3 for exactly this reason (though my dream car is an RS4).. it's the same as my old Scooby WRX, with a decent stainless exhaust and dump valve, plus the flat-four boxer engine meant it always sounded interesting event at idle and low speeds.
The RS3 is on my hit list.. it's a mega hatch/saloon and like the Scooby so characterful with that 5-pot!
Thanks for the tips on how to have fun and Keep your licence Kory 👍
My tt rs is same
Same engine
7:28 are your breaks squeal???
Yep, it gets very mild squeal now. Its the price of performance, and it also happens very rarely, so I'm fine with it.
@@KoryNunn hmm.... Ok!
What do you mean the price of Performance? Did you change the Original brake pads or still stock? How much miles/kilometers your car have? Sorry for my English.... Kind Regards from Switzerland and Rs3 driver.
Completely stock car. I've done about 8000kms. The RS3 has high performance brakes, and in general high performance brakes develop squeals.
@@KoryNunn Unfortunately I can not sign that.
I'm a car mechanic, drive the new rs3 and am aware of the problem with the brakes of the predecessor model!
this problem has been fixed in model 2017/2018!
other cars have performance brakes but still no quit! there are still street cars in the original condition without replaced brake pads!
that must not be! I'm afraid of another problem with them ....
attention: text was taken over by google translator!
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I dunno, they work fine, no vibrations, no damage, they are stock disks and pads, and the squeak only happens very rarely.
Not trying to be a partypooper, but the "rolling anti-lag" is just the DSG needing som time to make the gearshift. Thats why its holding back the engine power ;)
I highly doubt that, since it only happens in specific conditions, and it acts differently if you are already at full throttle. You can also watch the boost build while the revs are held.
I can't believe how many people watched this video and actually believe this car has rolling launch or antilag.
The sounds have deadened on the 2017 onwards models. I prefer the crisp pops and bangs of the 2016 model.

Iv been told by my Audi dealer ( uk) don’t do more then 4 launch control...
That's pretty funny. They are good for many, like hundreds.
I was told it would burn the clutch out so what’s the point of having a launch control if you can only use it for 4 times....🤦🏼♂️
@@mrlv8126 they are wet clutches, and they are very robust.
I wouldn’t believe what 98% of main dealers say. It’s more like 2-300 before the car won’t engage launch control anymore. Or simply get a stage 1 tune and you can do as many as you like.
That’s anti lag too?? Oh Man. I always thought my car was just over throttling RPMs and trying to change gears to correct me. The video just went from an 8/10 to 10/10
This car does NOT have antilag or rolling launch control lol. You're simply mashing the gas while the car is in between gears, which make the revs jump (because it's momentarily in neutral). Once the car is back into gear, of course it is going to take off.
A true rolling launch system allows you to build boost for as long as you need and then launch the car at the exact moment you want. Just like the actual launch control the car does have.
And do you even know what antilag actually is? VERY few road cars actually have this.
I'll admit that the RS3 does not have true rolling launch, or anti-lag, as you would find on a race car, but it does do a form of boost building via retarding timing just like how "real" anti-lag works. Yes, it's related to the timing of gearshifts, but it's not only due to being in neutral, and I have the footage to prove it coming in a video soon.
That's true. The car does retard timing during shifts. That's a general characteristic of most cars with DCTs though. Anywhere from the GTI to the M2. It's also what causes the "dsg fart".
that's kidstuff. get a milltek catless downpipe and milltek non-resonated catback exhaust - the car will be shooting like uzi
you missed out on a lot of other different sounds it can make , come for lessons lol
Nice of you to join RUclips just to tell me haha
Not just the video but I would love to know why the thumbs down on an obviously good video on a rs3. Nonetheless youtube should keep the feature so we can continue to dislike every joe biden related video. Awesome rs3 video and support freedom by not conforming to socialist agendas no matter where you are on the planet.
Such a bad video... This car makes much better sounds at other drive situations and settings.

Lol what a weird comment.
I think it’s because its facelift they are a little different sounding as Audi got rid of the cast iron block
