Karen was an extraordinary woman. I saw the Carpenters in concert on October 16, 1972 at the Mayo Civic Center in Rochester, Minnesota (I found the exact date at an online database of their performances). I was 15 years old and a drummer since age 10. I was able to watch her play drums from a very close position. On her floor tom (in this video she has two, so she might have had two also when I saw her) she had a stick bag attached to hold several drumsticks. When I got home, I told my mom about it, and she sewed one out of burlap for me. I had this on my drum set and my later set until 1977. When I sold that second set, I gave the stick bag with it. I will always admire Karen’s drumming and love her glorious voice.
Hey thank you for that! Am a newish drummer and would love further analysis. On several videos I think she is doing 1/32nds just for fun and because she can, plus crazy fills (see Johnny B Good from Budokon show!)
My dad loved the Carpenters and played them all the time and I really hated them at the time because he was always putting down the music I liked(which of course was harder rock) but now, as an adult, I can hear just how amazing these two were, and without the ego battle between me and my Dad going on, I can appreciate their music a lot more. Karen's voice is remarkable. No one has ever sang with such tenderness and grace. Yes other female singers are more technical and virtoustic, but her delivery and the way she put a song out there is unmatched to this day.
For sheer comfort, warmth, and peacefulness, there's a cozy fire on a chilly evening, the security of a soft blanket, the embrace of a loved one just when you need it...and Karen Carpenter's voice.
@David S. He said "singer", not "vocalist". I don't think being a belter is that necessary to be a good pop singer. A beautiful timbre is needed indeed, and Karen simply had it. Ariana Grande is a belter for sure, but I'm not sure whether people think she performs vocally better than Karen.

I feel the same way about their beatles cover of "A Ticket to Ride". Listening to their version made me realize how sad the song is. I appreciated it a lot more after listening to their cover.
Wow! This is live! Her voice is absolutely unequalled and next level. I am also obsessed listening to her sing as it is hypnotic and so incredibly beautiful and pure. The melancholy is palpable and the purity of her voice is unmatched. Best female singer ever? She is definitely in that discussion..
A part of that was so cool to see Richard and Karen 'tearing it up' with other great musicians! it was so fun. I've also loved your medley of Burt Bacharach tunes. We used to sing those in A Capella Choir in High School and have brought back many memories of good times. Thank you for your cool arrangements.
Damn!!! Karen was such a natural talent......I just loved absolutely everything about her...Karen was so happy and glowing behind them drums!!! Such a well rounded young lady.....hurts to realize how much pain and loneliness she suffered through.....I wish she had that one person who she had total trust and confidence in. I understand her illness was a secret, lonely disease.....but sometimes, it only takes that one special person to help someone. Might sound stupid, but if I was Karen’s sister, I would have held her hand so tight, wouldn’t have let go of her. I wouldn’t care how long or hard it would have been to find some kind of help early on. When you listen to her here, such a damn shame. She deserved so much more from the people around her. Just can wonder what she would be like today. I’m sure she’d still be genuine, loving with that cute little sense of humor......she would have been a great mom too. I wish Karen got to realize that type of love..... nothing can top the love between a mother and baby. Thank you to everyone that posts these videos. Karen is frozen in time. I love to look back at these times , close my eyes.......yeah....I feel better now!!! 💜💜💜 luv you Karen!!

Masterpiece!
Admittedly, their rendition of "HELP!" seems so much more convincing to me than the original. It beseeches the listener more intensely and affectionately, rather than lecherously. . and it's very sweet, to boot.
slimdudeDJC you imagine John and Karen singing the song together.
I feel the same way about their beatles cover of "A Ticket to Ride". Listening to their version made me realize how sad the song is. I appreciated it a lot more after listening to their cover.
Just beautiful!
She was an awesome drummer and great singer.
The Carpenters at the same festival as "Iron Butterfly"? "Inhaggada Divida" and "Close to you" at the same music festival. Wow!
Yes, kind of like when Hendrix opened for the Monkeys.
@@MM-yn9db Or in Denver in 1968 when Led Zeppelin opened for Vanilla Fudge.
Great show ...nobody talks bout Tony Joe White...whtat a voice and a performer
1971....they hadn't even recorded the majority of their big hits yet.
They were brand new
Wow! This is live! Her voice is absolutely unequalled and next level. I am also obsessed listening to her sing as it is hypnotic and so incredibly beautiful and pure. The melancholy is palpable and the purity of her voice is unmatched. Best female singer ever? She is definitely in that discussion..
Beautiful angelic voice. Who else can get away with singing even The Beetles songs?❤️😊💕
Wow they also have this song from Beatles
Thank You 🙏
Very appreciated so much your solely unique band in the world
Increíble voz de 21 años de edad...❤❤❤
Great to hear Karen singing Richards part on "Love Is Surrender ". Thank you for sharing this post.
If Only Karen had found Someone to Truly Love her. Saddest Story i ve heard in years.
Sheldon Cooper81 yes she deserves true love.😢
A part of that was so cool to see Richard and Karen 'tearing it up' with other great musicians! it was so fun. I've also loved your medley of Burt Bacharach tunes. We used to sing those in A Capella Choir in High School and have brought back many memories of good times. Thank you for your cool arrangements.
I love her voice and watching her never get tirer of her music
This deserves 260.900 views Shame it doesnt have these.
I remember their hits were on all of the “pop” radio stations and I still know every word! I love in one of their bios KDLang says she was a big influence on her vocal style.
Thanks for sharing this fab era of their career.
Its still famous even to this very day 2020, it still played on radio air waves around the world.... 💗💗💗
Good grief! Karen's voice. So warm it could melt the Sun. Some people will never get it.
