- Here is a really easy instructional video on how to replace the Combination Blinker Switch on a 2004 Dodge Ram 1500. I was having random issues with my blinkers, dimmer, hazards, & winshield wipers. After replacing all bulbs and checking for shorts, I decided to change the switch. It was way easier than I thought it would be. The part was $69.00 and the labor was less than 30 minutes........I'm not a mechanic, so that part was free.
You absolutely do not need to remove the steering wheel. I did this in less than 10 minutes. T20 and #2 Phillips
At 24 seconds that round piece of plastic does come off by prying at the screw hole in the upper left. Again at 4:05, where you see that upper screw, that is where you pry a little and the whole switch pulls out, no need to pull the steering wheel. Yours was the only video that shows how to remove the steering wheel adjustor cover, thank you for that!
Just replaced the multi-function switch on my 2004 Ram 1500 after watching your tutorial ; everything works like a charm ! Your video made the job a snap. I couldn't figure out how some of the others changed this switch without removing the steering wheel, I tried pulling it out after removing the specified screws, it didn't want to come out easy and I didn't want to break anything so ... your video made pulling the wheel off pretty simple as well. Thank you sir, you helped save my family HUNDREDS of dollars in mechanics fees.
Great news Patrick. I don't think the "Other" way works as others have commented. Maybe on different models. Glad it helped you out. Feel free to support our channel on Patreon. Take Care. www.patreon.com/LifeBuzzn
I used your video and instructions and changed mine tonight. Took me about 35-40 minutes. I did have to remove the steering wheel and did not need a wheel puller. Thank you for the video, it made this so much easier for me! 👊🏾👊🏾
Don’t need to remove the steering wheel, hardest part was removing the steering adjustment lever. 10-15 minute job start to finish. And I’m not super mechanically savvy. Thanks for the video it was helpful.
DO NOT REMOVE STEERING WHEEL!!
this goes from 02-08
just turn it to the 9:00 o'clock position to expose switch screws. . then pull swith straight towards the driver door if that makes sense..
*NO NEED TO REMOVE STEERING WHEEL*
THANK YOU! I was wondering the same thing....
That doesn't work on my 2004 Dodge RAM 1500....2 wheel drive. It paysfor everybody to do their own research.
Be careful trying it that way......good way to break your expensive switch.
I swapped mine out w/o removing the steering wheel. It took less than 10 minutes
LifeBuzzN naw nothing will happen just carefully pull straight out. and they're like 10 bucks at the junk yard.. if in doubt i always go to the junk yard to practice removing ANYpart so i don't mess up the part i need if that makes sense.
Thanks for posting this! All my low/high/running lamps, turn signals, and wipers all went out. This was an easy inexpensive fix. I did not remove the steering wheel. The switch just pops out. Thanks again!
Great Video, very well done. Direct, to the point without the seemingly normal RUclips, "I'm great" video vibe. Replaced mine in about 40 minutes. Kudos, to you and your video.
+shadowops8977 Good deal, glad it helped. Thanks for using it as a reference.
You can separate the "O ring" from the switch/hazard and not have to remove the wheel.
So are you saying that piece can be put on without removing the steering wheel?
Sir..... Great video. I had my Durango 01 looked at by a macheatnic (misspelled on purpose) who told me it would cost just over $800. to make repairs needed to stop my wipers from staying on all the time. I am ordering the part in a few minutes. I will fix it myself thanks to your video. I really appreciate you sir.
+Michael Rivers Good luck!
My 2002 quad cab is very similar, the other videos show a switch that is much easier to remove. Thank you for this video it helped me fix my Truck.
I just ordered mine and putting it in using your instructions. thank you
Did all that and have same problem with new part (intermittent wipers don't work and they do random stuff. Thanks for video. It was perfect representation.
excellent video but I might add I have watched several others because I am destined to do this myself. the others say to remove the steering wheel in the normal straight position due to over twisting the rotating mechanism for the cables.
Do you own research and do it as you see best. It's worked great for me, and is still working. Good Luck. If you haven't already done so, subscribe to keep up with updates. Thanks
I just changed mine out today. Took me 5 min. This guy wasted a lot of unnecessary time doing that way
Certified RUclips Mechanic
No disrespect but I'm glad I watched the 4 min video.... no need to remove the wheel
this video works exactly same for 2004 dodge durango...had to use puller for steering wheel, but no problem..was a loaner tool available at advance autoparts. great video, thanks for the help.
+Dan Williams You are welcome.
I just changed mine in my 2004. No need to remove stirring wheel. You have to have the top to the left to remove the 2 screws behind the wheel. Easy peasy
great video. one of the best ,I have seen on here. that was the easiest thing I changed on my truck so far. good job . thanks a lot .
AND.....you saved about $600.
Great video fixed my 06 Dodge Dakota no problem thanks
Henry Camarillo Why pay the man....right? Good job Henry.
This a much better video , cause I don't see how some people say they took that switch off without removing the steering wheel
Buddy the only thing holding the whole switch assembly in is a little notch on the plate with the part number all you have to do is push the plate out and slide it out
Very helpful! Thanks for posting!
Hope it helps. Thanks for watching.
Great video it really helped me understand this blinker switch system thank you.
Glad it helped
thanks changed my switch today. One thought the switch comes apart the ring comes off makeing removeing stearing wheel unessary
I guess it's quite off topic but does anybody know a good website to stream newly released series online ?
@Conor Noel i would suggest FlixZone. Just search on google for it =)
@Kameron Deacon yea, I have been using flixzone for since march myself =)
@Kameron Deacon thank you, signed up and it seems like they got a lot of movies there =) Appreciate it !!
@Conor Noel you are welcome xD
i THANK YOU FOR YOUR EYES AND IDEAS FOR THE BLINKER PROBLEM..... MY PROBLEM IS CLOSE TO YOURS, BUT I THINK IT IS THE CLOCK SPRING YOU HAD TO REMOVE TO GET TO YOUR TURN SIGNAL MULTI -FUNCTION SWITCH. i HAD AN AIR BAG RECALL ON MY 2002 GRAND CHEROKEE THIS SUMMER AND NOW NO STEERING WHEEL CONTROLS WORK (SUCH AS RADIO, CRUISE CONTROL, AIR BAG LIGHT IN INSTRUMENT PANEL IS ON, AND THE HORN..... MOPAR WANTS $262 FOR THE CLOCK SPRING...WOW THANKS AGAIN.
Did that fix your problem?
What is the part # & who is the manufacturer?
...thanx!
Excellent tutorial..
I have the same project ahead of me. I bought the new part, was rather rattled that i had to remove the steering wheel. I looked at it for a minute and realized you can install the new switch while using the old ring. The switch assy. slides off the ring with a tug, so the new one will fit into the old ring. After watching your vid, i think ill do the whole deal. Thank you! Was curious what went out in your old switch, was it the wiper fluid and high beam control? I lost both functions myself.
Thanks for the video - I had to remove the wheel for mine too - 2004.5 Ram 2500. There is no other way to do it!
Thanks Greg.
You must be blind because I just did mine you just have to push the plastic flange forward to slide it out because there’s one little knob on the top of the Old switch that is stopping it from coming out of the plastic housing
I have a 2004 ram 1500 and I didn't have to remove the steering wheel lol!!!! It took only 10 to 15 minutes👍🏾👍🏾
hello, it's nice to see a good description of the replacement combination wrench, I have a problem with beacons or warning lights or parking lights, I press the button, and do not work, just stopped working, turn signals work great, check fuses - check fuse and connections, and can not find fault, do I want to know if you could describe in any video or electrical plan the relay that powers the parking lights ?, i have the truck from this year it is a 2007 model, engine cummins 5.9L diesel, and I want to check all possible failures before making the purchase and replacement of the part you change, please if possible, could you send me the electric circuit dodge ram 1500? thanks I await your response and I congratulate you for being good video explaining through my expression is by watching the video, I do not understand your language, but I was totally clear in case you need to replace the part as I should. Thank you. I only speak Spanish.-
nice video, i got issue with wipers, working not as they should do. Do you know the tightening torque of steering wheel? How much time to wait after disconnecting battery ( my english is not efficient )
Thanks for the vid!
Now to tackle the job :)
Good Luck.
You're Welcome.
I pried the plastic round and pulled the switch out. Much safer and faster.
Awesome video! Thank you!
Glad you liked it!
thanks this video helped alot
Great video by the way...
Why did you take the steering wheel off
Thanks for the tips!
My steering wheel will not pull off, comes about a half inch and thats it, any advice?
About to change mine. My brights wont come on with the wipers on and the wipers are only one speed...
Very helpful thanks..
I have a 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 and mine puts the hazards on when I put the right turning signal on and right tail light when I brake doesn’t work idk how to solve the issue then sometimes the left turning signal does the same but I’ve replaced the bulbs so idk what’s the issue can someone help do I need the replace the turning signal switch or see if it’s wired wrong
Good helpful tips thanks
is this replacement the same for a 1999 Ram 1500 ?
Will this work the same way for 2001 replacement??
Must have the loaded recall air bag? That have killed people?
Do no pull wheel. It has a lil plastic pin holding switch. Just wedge pick and switch pulls out towards door. Ring stays on. BTW DO NOT PUT airbag pointing that way you said. It may short out with static and make it pop so leather down.
Actually, the way I mentioned is correct, but to each his own. I would rather the leather cover launch into the air vs the entire air back taking off like a rocket. Be safe when messing with Airbags regardless. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for you help
Welcome.
Electric ring is called clock ring
Cool, Thanks.
Yea there are way too many steps here. Once you get the clamshell top and bottom off, simply turn the wheel to 9 o'clock and remove the two Philips screws that show on the left side, on the black plastic cover. Unplug the combo switch from behind the switch. It has a red safety tab on it. Lift the black cover and slide the whole combo switch out to the left. Reverse order. Takes 12 minutes or less. 1AAuto has a much quicker video tutorial
Anyone else have issues not getting second torx screw out (on bottom)? My torx driver seems to be too short and the attached for a driver is too wide to fit the pilot hole.. Just curious how everyone else accomplished this? A set of long torx drivers? Thanks in advance
I didn't use any special tools......
I finally found a slim torx driver that was long enough for the one screw. that was all I was lacking. easy job once I found that. thanks
It will come off without removing steering wheel, as long as turning the wheel side to side is possible, which might not be an option if visiting a junk yard
+jandjmca mcavoy Not for 2003-2008. Older models perhaps.
racery13 mine is a 03. went to junk yard and pull switch from like 5 different trucks. from 02 to 05 and i did it without removing the steering wheel
You only have to watch the video to see that its not possible to do this without removing the steering wheel.
There are several videos showing how to do it in 10 minutes without removing the steering wheel.
I would add that you should try to simply take it apart and clean it first. I just did mine tonight. Cleaned it up, put it back together, and everything is working great again. Here's my video on how I cleaned it: ruclips.net/video/Kb87qBE9Ito/видео.html
have this same problem on my '07
It really wasn't too made to make the change. Saved some $$$ by doing it myself.
That's fucked up, my 2000 doesn't need the steering wheel removed. Yep, just keep making it harder to work on.
yes do not remove steering wheel
With my model, I had to choice.
Easy peasy but the ones from China are cheesy
My steering wheel will not pull off, comes about a half inch and thats it, any advice?
Try to rock it back and forth. It should come loose. Worst case....go to the parts store and rent a steering wheel puller. Good luck. Be Patient.
