Why Printer Ink Is So Expensive | So Expensive - Наука
"Very simple: Greed." How refreshing.
Not only though. I think printing in digital Era is useless, so to speak-- sooner or later everything that is formal - documents etc will be digital, henceforth there is no use in producing toxic chemicals in to the environment.
QRS3C273 Yep, greed. . .on the part of the consumer who will buy the cheapest printer rather than looking at the total cost of ownership. I doubt many would buy a HP 4520 at $ 170 ( $ 120 cost to make + a bit of profit ) with lower cost ink when a printer next to it is $ 60. but has more expensive ink. How about you or David Connett opening up a printer manufacturing company and sell things for.what you would want to pay? Should be a huge money maker given so many consumers want less expensive printing no?
Bob Roberts
there are printers that wont work until you refill ink, even if you arent using that colour
"These days you're getting even less for your money."
Daring today, aren't we?
Yep, and one doesn't require 4 mins to state it.
Screw banning straws, go after these wasteful ink companies.
Randy Mayton lol so true
they cant make money off those civil straws lol
bann straws, but also go after these wasteful ink companies.
I’m the 500th like
Why not ban them at the same time?
I love how in their statement, HP just pushes the burden of the environmental impact onto the consumer and shirks all responsibility.
Also find it funny they mention "reducing plastic waste" yet HP keeps forcing costumers to buy new plastic ink cartridges over and over, and then make them incompatible with newer models
Better way would have been let the users refill the catrigges them selves
What about other cheap printers ?
This backfired so much that my previous companies banned printing unless absolutely necessary, reducing total printing overhead by 85-90% approx. Indian government has reduced the need of document by ekyc and esign.
Yes, have you noticed that banks /companies don't want to print anything anymore? My mortgage company even coerces you to go with e-statements by charging you a fee for paying your bill if you don't.
They practically give the printers away and then charge you an arm and a leg for the ink 🤔
That's the entire business model. It's been around since Gillette invented it.

Haha ya suckers, thats why i dont buy printers just go to any office and pay 10 cents for a printed paper.
It’s like a drug dealer giving you the first one for free. They know you will be a customer for the rest of your life!
It's cheaper just to buy a printer with new ink each time your ink runs out. The ridiculousness.

It's good that companies like Epson exist. I have their ink printer with external ink containers (really big ones). When the ink level is low I just pour it from the bottle.
Epson ❤
And then you need to replace the chipped waste ink container (at least on some of those models)
Yes! We changed all our printers to Epson with refillable ink tanks. Very cost efficient and easy to refill.
I see. I plan to buy a printer anytime soon, can you list some more tips/ advantages of epson over others?
@@dallolapp356 thank you very much, I'll take note of your points. Im a student and i may just need some not too much printing like a few prints maybe, thats it. But thanks again!!
NO this is NOT true. Our Epson Ecotank 440 printers, after 2Y the heads clogged before we got through just ONE large bottle of ink! I bought a head-cleaning set and it did not work and we had WASTED our $440 on a cheap low-end $120 printer and had plenty of bottles of leftover ink to show for it !! Also realize that there is a head-cleaning nappy in the bottom of ALL Epson printers and so NEVER unplug an Epson printer (we never unplugged ours) as it wakes up every few days to clean its heads. Once that head-cleaning nappy is filled with ink in a year or two ALL Epson printers are programmed to DIE! There is NO escape from this type of Epson printer death!
I've owned and used the same laser printer for fourteen years. I've put exactly three toner cartridges in it in that time and spent $60 each time. Each one prints about 2500 +/- pages, laser printing is much cheaper in the end - less than 3 cents a page.
I had to buy a printer before my first spring semester at college and all the damn top-rated Laser Printers were on backorder. I got stuck having to buy inkjet printer.
Right... and Laser printers don't have less printer quality.
@imacmadman . . . Say! You saved me the time to put those same words as what you wrote about laser printers. I had the same results myself.
From what I recall, the color laser printer I got was around $300. The toner carts lasted for years, as opposed to ink carts that can dry out in months.
Print quality in color is very good; I'd say better than what I've seen with ink printers.
@@gczobel Yeah! That was a strange comment in the video about color laser printers having less quality. The one I have displays very good results.
New inkt printers have inkttanks (ecotank) that can print over 2000 with one tank (right now I printed about 1000 pages and consumed about 40% of the tanks black ink and 12% of the other collors. 1 refill for 1 color costs 13€ I think. I needed cheap printing for school so I got this ecotank printer by epson.
that explains why the schools almost never print in color
Trueee
But they print colored paper so...
i dont think thats ink, thats construction paper
Schools usually have commercial laser printers . Color cost per copy can cost 7-14 times more than a black document.
I don’t why but when u print a black and white document it still uses other colors.
I absolutely love this lobbyist. He is brutally honest, and it’s honestly refreshing.

My printer has been out of ink for years now. I'm glad almost everything is online nowadays-- I haven't had to print something out to turn it in for a long time. Hopefully the transition to online documents will help get rid of the inflated ink prices since less and less people are needing ink.
Not to mention that companies like VistaPrint and other such online print shops, use commercial grade printers which may be tens of thousands of dollars... but they are so much more efficient than a consumer level printer it's sickening.
Also recently Cannon was sued for completely disabling all functions of their printers when you run out of ink in one or more cartridges. So if your printer has a scanner that might possibly have faxing capabilities you cannot use those functions if you run out of ink even though those functions don’t even require ink to function.

I am appalled that they can remotely deactivate a cartridge of ink before I've finished using the entire well of ink! That means that they aren't even letting me use all the ink that I bought in the first place! As consumers, we assume the company is ethically allowing us full access to a product that we fully own! I'd argue that these companies are being unethical by remotely deactivating the cartridge (regardless of a subscription or any claims on the number of pages the ink can cover).
More and more "products" are moving to a you-don't-actually-own-it model. Most things these days are subscription based rather than purchased outright, especially things like software. Even physical items "reserve rights."
@@quillmaurer6563 Yes, this is part of the WEF agenda, "You will Own NOTHING and Be Happy!" Seems suspiciously like theft to me.😵
@quillmaurer6563 that's why we all pirate Adobe
But we can't pirate ink
@@furr_63 That is why you buy third party ink cartridges with hacked / recycled firmware chips that cost 1/3 the price of official branded ink. Or buy the printers with ink tanks instead of using cartridges.
That only happens if you're "subscribed" to their ink service, which is a scam, just like inkjet printers are. Just buy a laser printer and be done with it. If you don't print very often, the toner won't dry out so you can stop worrying about having to replace the toner if you print something in 8 months.
I had a coworker who told me she'd throw away her printers every year and buy a new one because it was cheaper than buying the ink. This is ridiculous and needs to be changed
She is as ridiculous as printers manufacturers.... 🙄 This can easily change...
@@deltafox52 They're passing on the ridiculousness to the consumer.
This is what I used to do as well. It annoyed me because it was so stupid, but it was significantly cheaper. Then printer companies switched to "starter" cartridges in new printers that meant you effectively had to buy a printer _and_ ink upfront, so it was no longer worth it.
Which is an incredibly dumb thing to do now as most printers are now sold with “setup” or “starter” cartridges that are deliberately hobbled to have minimal ink so you need to buy cartridges really quickly.
Far better to buy a more expensive printer with lower cost consumables but most consumers don’t do the research.
Damn
Imagine if a company sold a decent priced printer with resonably priced cartidges
It’d be game over for everyone else
@Nubnewb Epson is the worst of the lot. First they make the printheads non-user replaceable (it means the bin when they fail or clog), then they
spent MILLIONS in R&D to develop nasty non-refillable cartridges with chips designed to lock out competitors and cause trouble, then because printheads are built-in they devised the wonderful vacuum "cleaning" system that sucks out the gold-priced ink and WASTES it in a pad. When the printer *thinks* that the pad is full, it jams up telling you it needs servicing. It means binning the printer if you cannot source the Adjustment Program and DIY. This is EPSON! You're welcome!

@@Manu-Official interestingly, my third party cannon black ink cartridge that was 3 years old worked perfectly, where as the original could not after the same time. Both of them were sealed and unused prior.

How relatable is this A WHOLE LOT
At this point in my life where I haven't even started working for my own living and everything is already expensive just makes me think how inflation will be in 5 -10 years ... like living is so freaking expensive I don't even need to know the reason why they are expensive cuz it all comes down to greed
Another trick they use is to add color ink into black and white printing, so you may be printing a bunch of text and then suddenly "you are out of cyan" - they say that the printer doesn't have "true" black ink and that it is more of a grey so that it can make darker shades of other colors for color printing, but in reality it just means that the non-black ink is used up way faster, because you need more of it to mix into a color to make it darker than if you used black ink and you need more of it along with some color ink to create black too. If they used real black ink, you could use less of the ink more spread out and it'd produce exactly the same colors.
they say they need to do this because adding cyan to black toner creates a "truer black" color, but then if that's the case, they should have added more cyan to the black toner.
Yes, but at least with HP you can disable that "option" in the settings, so it only uses the black ink when printing in black and white.
@@presidentkiller Fun fact about HP - they've started to make it so their new printer/scanner combos require ink to scan.
@@StreakyBaconMan Really? Thank goodness mine is from 2015 before they even thought about the ink subscription nonsense. I will die the day that thing dies on me and I can't find another one like it. 😐

I *DESPISE* when this happens
Ahhh pain
That doesn't happen in India. We can get a Hp Printer to print black and white even if color ink has run out.
Not so fun fact: certain printer would intentionally add a tiny bit of magenta or cyan ink into every black print; they say it makes it "more black" though really it just drain your ink faster.
You have to mix it. There is no black ink in standard printers. The dark color is called key (thats why it called CMYK) and is just a dark grey. Otherwise it wouldnt be possible to mix it with the other colors to create darker shades
Why does printer ink cost so much? Greed. There, just saved you 4 minutes.

Yup me too

Really? Wow that's actually super useful information since I've been thinking about getting a printer as soon as I have the money saved up, that printer with such lasting ink is seriously something to consider in the long run! To think I was looking at only the cheap ones, like the hp you mentioned when it would actually end up costing more. It's something I never knew about before since I've never owned a printer before but it makes alot of sense to pay more up front and save money down the road than the other way around!
Epson printers are really nice, the cartilage of printers from other brands I used gets clogged easily, but my Epson one never have this problem
I run a business and I tell my staff to ask me for paper before they print. I want a damn good reason for wanting to print and not do things digitally . Myself, I don't print anything other than when a government office wants something printed. I even fill in and sign contracts digitally
Im a former HP printer retail assistant here in the Philippines and it seems cartridges are cheaper also the tank type inks
This stuff is more expensive than Espresso's monthly subscription!!
4:40 "When customers purchase HP, they are reducing plastic waste" - how? It's rather the opposite. Having to regularly replace cartridges creates plastic waste.
They meant that the old cartridge is supposed to be returned to HP. New carts that have run out of ink can be refilled, then resold, several times before the head wears out.
@@q-_-p.d-_-b What about the entire printer ??
@DerpyDoge Because buying a new one is cheaper than buying new cartridges.
@@q-_-p.d-_-b
but at the same time, it doesn't make sense why it's still expensive when they can reduce new parts and lower the sale costs.
Yeah, i know. The biggest difference between OEM ink and ebay ink refills is that OEM ink doesnt fade, and the blacks are darker and they don't smear when it gets wet. OEM's have a monopoly bc they have a proprietary formula, and they spent alot of money on r&d, so thats one reason why it cost an arm and a leg. Thats why I use cheap ebay ink refill kits. I bought mines a couple years ago for $12 and still have alot of ink left. Ofc I don''t really care if it fades or smears, i can alway reprint it. If you have the right printer, you can even refill the carts at Costco while you shop.
For most of my limited needs, black & white laser printer is great. $28 cad for a cartridge to print about 1500 pages of printed text. For color photographs, I order them online from local Walmart. Ready usually next day and fairly cheep. This is just a bit of research before you get sucked into buying cheep ink jet printer. I just had 36 pictures of 8"x10" done and bill was around $50 cad. But this was for the first time in many years. One thing I love though is a laminator with 5 mil full size pouches for many "cheat sheets" for either music theory or shortcuts for windows and many programs ... just do not laminate an official documents! lol I think they are unofficial than...
Great video
They really put a microchip in the ink cartridges 😩 just make it cheaper so we stop buying third party stuff 😭😭😭
The microchip also has the expiry date; you cannot use a cartridge past its due date
If a printer manufacturer makes ink cheaper then they would have to increase the cost of the printer.
And if people perceive the printer as "too expensive" they won't even purchase it, let alone the ink.
Imagine looking at every brand of a simple, small printer for ~$99 and then the same looking printer of another brand for $300? Without knowing the cost of the consumable (ink), most would go for the cheaper brands.
Unless most or all manufacturers change, one won't take the risk.
I'm not against your comment because ink prices are ridiculous. Imagine buying a computer for $300 but paying $500 for the mouse and keyboard. Same story.
@@janami-dharmam lol
They use the "cheap printer, expensive ink" strategy because consumers are dumb and look at product price without checking cost of operation. Same reason why people get "free" phones with a carrier deal (basically a credit)
Brother printers cost 3x+ as much as a "typical" printer but you can get 50ml ink set for 10$. Also ink refill takes couple seconds. Open refill tank, pour ink in, close.
Epson don't do that. Their EcoTank printers uses no electronics for ink status at all. You have to manually look at the tanks to see when you need refill. They are all shown in front of the printers. Impossible to trick anyone. On top of it, they are 50 times cheaper to print photo with.
Same with cars and their overpriced parts, same with Gilette blades, etc.
*cries in lego*
Damn straight I lost my car keys (thankfully I had a spare) and wanted a replacement, but the manufacture was charging me over $300 for a replacement.
@@gp8666 That's why this video is sponsered by dollar shave club!
I own a laser printer and the print quality is great
I contributed in making toner, in Alsace, France, for the Japanese company Ricoh. I had never seen and have not seen since a better organized factory. And so clean that a hospital may not even compete. The parc around it, always well-kept. And the Japanese superiors were always extremely polite and desirous to make sure the French staff were happy about the working conditions. The salary was a bit better than elsewhere too. Ricoh has my trust. Good products. I worked there as a temporary worker, then l started English lessons to become an English teacher and ended up opening a food company (very small, but l make ends meet, l am happy... but a bit worried as the covid has almost ruined me and now business is not as l wish. I have not given myself a salary for months, but hope is possible).
Most people hate when they need to print a black and white text document but printer won't print because "it run out of yellow ink"
You can set the printer to only use blank or only use colour cartridge. Or of course to use both.

Sell a gun for $30 but a bullet cost $100 each.

That literally happens in my country lol.
Bullet price is fair enough. Stops people at bullet than at hospital bill.

Well I'll make my own bullet once I know how to make it
I actually bought three printers in about two years because it was cheaper to buy them than to buy new cartridges, I saved up and switched to a more expensive tank printer and It save me so much money... (I still have the funtional but inkless printers).
We got printer that does not use cartridges, the ink tank (idk what it's called) is basically outside the printer. Easy to refill and very cheap as well. It works just fine despite being almost three year old printer
You, looking at Japan brand name 2015 Epison EcoTank series model. It a awesome and way better revolutionary modern printer better.
I used to refill cartridges when I worked at Walgreens. It involved pushing needles into the cartridges and filling them up. Was significantly cheaper than buying new ones. Printer companies constantly change cartridge types to make older ones outdated. They also started putting ceramic plugs into the cartridges so you couldn’t refill them. I also think the company that made the refilling machine was sued on a constant basis so eventually they just gave up and we stopped providing the services after they stop making refills.
People cant have plastic bags or straws, but companies can wrap 3ml of ink in 10 pounds of plastic and sell that over and over to the same people lol. And why is all the food still packaged in plastic? Are we really that dumb?
But...money!
@@danielharvison7510 Butt money, and its our ass.
Plastic is easy for food storage. You can't really get a good alternative for cling wrap. Or phone cases, or toys, or containers, without paying a much larger sum of money. That's the issue with trying to go plastic-free.
Some plastic things are replaceable, some aren't so easily done. And some can't afford it, unless there's cheaper alternatives, but currently those are rare.
yes
Contemporary environmentalist movements are all scams.
Well we used EPSON L Series here in indonesia, It's using ink tank system
I remember in the late 80's it was cheap to get ink. I was one of the only kids in my school that had a full working computer with printer and I used to print out color book pages for everyone. I could print out a couple hundred a day for a couple dollars. Yeah, it cost some time and money to develop the newer inks but the price hike is completely ridiculous. I have a printer connected to my current computer but I don't print anything unless it's for legal or financial situations. And that's a real shame, I wouldn't mind printing out some of my photos but it's just not worth it anymore.
This is why I use crayons for all my important color documents

Cheaper ink cartridges?

Made me laugh out loud. It's sad but too true.
there is also a limiter at the back basically what it does is limits the printer from using the ink even though there is still ink in the cartrage so they rip you off just remove it and it'll use every drop of ink
can do like i do, buy color ink, get a shot thingy, drill small hole on top, put ink in, then take small ear wax plug stuff an plug hole, been doing this for years.
