Jess has really come into his stride, love all the behind the scenes research as always Gary.
Also Jess looks like a big fella sitting there 👍💪
Oh man... y’all really covered all of it. I know most of the people in & produced this movie. (I mean directors and producers and crew... not the unfortunate actors...)
So i got so much more to say....
But. Anyway.
Gary... Iian...
If you like... I’ll message you all about it for the next podcast.
Ps
Lance Hendrickson is an ANGEL... and you should really read his autobiography:
“Not bad for a Human”
😢😫😫🙌🏻❤️❤️❤️
It’s beautiful.
I cant believe I sat through this movie. Fan movies work in 10 minute long RUclips videos. Production budgets COVER: Salaries, administration (bank loans, taxes, legal paperwork; we dont want to get sued, we need some type of insurance. Yaddy yadda) And then from there you can buy your latex, contact a wardrobe department and hire your contractor to cheaply build your sets. 300K doesnt go far.
Damn Jess has really found his feet with the reviews now and his insight is great, brilliant as always guys, OTSR 🤙🤙
Matt Winston is the son of late effects genius and creator of the T800 endoskeleton, Stan Winston. Alec Gillis and Tom Woodruff worked for Stan Winston, and did effects for Aliens, Terminator, etc.
That opening shot of the Russian shuttle hurtling towards earth seriously looked like something out of Plan 9. I wouldn't have been surprised to see a string attached to it.
This is like the “made in China” version of the thing and alien lol great review as always!
Aloha you beautiful beasts. Thank you for reviewing a request of mine 😎❤🐞
Jess looking into camera looking defeated and a little sad, maybe exacerbated, would be all the review needed. His frustration was a lil heart breaking tbh. Less flippantly, his input on these reviews gets stronger here.
Welcome to off the shelf review's...'I'm back from lockdown', I'm Jess and I'm Gary.
That day will make me lose my shit. I can't wait!!!!
04:04
those characters
are why it's not believable
that this is supposed to be
set in 1982
Okay, that's eerie - I just watched this last night!
I gotta say this was a disappointing film. It feels unfinished especially in the creature department which happens to be the main attraction. I already was expecting student acting and many other flaws going into this but I do agree that all of that could have been forgivable if the gore, cinematography, and creature effects had been top notch. When I heard about this movie I got all excited, until I actually watched it 😩 😭
I really like the new guy! The videos are always great! And he is wearing a Bruce Lee shirt. My man!
Aside from Lance Henriksen, I do appreciate most of the practical effects! And that's about it. It's not one of the worst horror movies I've seen, I still believe I've seen WORSE than this. And this movie is...alright.
Definitely an homage to “The Thing”and “Alien”. I must admit though this movie is a guilty pleasure of mine...not the greatest, but still a very watchable sci-fi /horror. Anyone for popcorn 🍿🍿🍿.Good SFX & story for the budget, though the lighting was poor. Lance Henrickson is great as always. Creature feature à la cart. Adding Jess to the show just makes your channel better and it’s already terrific👍👍👍👍. Cheers mates!
"the closing of the film was awful, as was the beginning..and most of the middle." Ouch! 😂😂
The only thing I remember from this movie was that they used the hell out of that "squeaky hatch door" stock sound effect.
13:09 how do you make a continuity error when you have a guy basically making a money shot scene? How many sex jokes did you make about that while making it, then it's magically gone even his shirt is clean and it left no stain on it.
FANTASTIC REVIEW SIR!!! ENJOYING SO MUCH!
wow Lance Henriksen will take any role in any movie
I put $100 to their Kickstarter campaign and never received the script or poster. They did send exclusive behind the scenes videos where everybody was obviously high on cocaine.
Nice to see they spent your money well 🤣🤣🤣
Ahh, just like The Crow.
Dude you never even got the POSTER!?!
BOOOOO!!!!
I’ll send you my high rez copy if you wanna try to have it printed or something.
You should do John Carpenter's Elvis & Escape From New York/L.A.
Really cool and insightful review, I've not even heard of this movie, but seems really interesting. Great work guys! 👊
i love this film. "You're gonna need a bigger bucket".
Mannn! Jess has some major knowledge, that dude is the wizard of wisdom when it comes to movies 👏 great review as always lads ✌🤘
This movie kinda made me laugh because it was the FX guys basically saying, "We can do a better job than The Thing prequel." The movie dropped the ball on so much levels, hell the very first scene in the movie is terrible CGI.
We're going to need a bigger bucket lol
That accent is legendary 🤣🤣🤣
H.R Giger had some nice things to say about Gillis and Woodruff.
Good review guys!! Always makes my day :)
I dont think Harbinger Down is perfect by any means, but considering it was essentially a crowd funded project I've seen far worse Sci-fi horrors. Disgraceful that Alec Gillis and his practical effects team never had much of their work on display for that mediocre 2011 The Thing prequel.
forget about it being crowd funded paul its a bad movie no excuses
@@davidlawrencegraham6722 I do agree, it's no great shakes at all David. But I like flicks like this, and believe me mate I've endured far worse stinkers than this down the years.
@@paulhirst7602 that's fair enough paul we like what we like im a harsher critic of lower budget films like this there just not really my thing tbh : )
Where's ian? Did he and Gary have a row?
Funny because now water bears might actually be stranded on the moon
I would love to see you Beautiful bearded British beasts dissect the movie Freeway (1996). Freeway is a twisted version of Little Red Riding Hood. Some of the best dialog I've ever heard. 😎
Why are all the doors on the Harbinger Down so squeaky? No reason.
I wonder if the characters last name Winston is a Nod to Stan Winston ?
Yes, embrace the genre! Cheers to that.
8 views and one dislike...WTF? it just got uploaded
Iain strikes again!!!
When I stream I get at least 4 dislikes straight away for some reason lol
Unfortunately practical effects are becoming a lost. Art
The company behind the movie, ADI is the forerunner of practical effects and made Harbinger Down because people kept overwriting their work with CGI. They had all practical effects for The Thing (2011), but the studio decided to replace it all, like many studios do now.
Never heard of this flick. Seems cool. Stay safe you two!
You get a thumbs up just for the T-shirt.
So, a mish mash of Alien(s), John Carpenter's The Thing, and a bit of The Blob remake from the '80's. Also, nonsense mutations remind me of the Resident Evil games - hell, 5 had a sequence taking place on a large cargo ship!
This film brings up a question I occasionally have: Where does homage end and plagiarism begin?
Other than that, it just seem like a waste of time to watch an inferior copycat that also doesn't do anything innovative.
I saw this on the horror channel I think it went under a different name
Do you plan on taking a look into the kaiju genre anytime soon?
Originally, I had only rented it because of Lance Henriksen. Truthfully, I might've given this movie a serious hard-pass if not for him being in it. I didn't hate the movie. It was definitely a step above the crappy direct-to shlock and I can see the influences and inspirations in the movie. And the creators' hearts were in the right place.
Good job on the review
I like Jess he seems like a very nice flatmate and has a lot of good points and seems like the type of bloke I would drink couple pints with and discuss movies with in to the night but holy hell man looks like Gary has kept you up doing these reviews for 3 or 5 days. Just messing with you Gary. He's a good stand-in for Iain and I like seeing him but it just looks like he hasn't slept in days. " The bags and rubbing his eyes" Wouldn't be opposed to seeing him becoming a regular after all this Corona stuff or seeing how he and Iain mesh doing a review.
14:11 maybe because of lack of blood the effect actually , to me looks kinda goofy looking.
Gary did get his beard trimmed
Never heard of this movie
me neither
I think it's on yt
seen about 4 times now... yes i love it too...
An utterly atrocious movie. Horrid scripting, horrid camerawork, horrid acting, and just frustratingly derivative instead of being a neat homage. Even the effects fail to impress which is the one element you'd think they'd be focused on getting right given the history behind this movie.
I'm sorry, I'm subscribed and love the show for the movie reviews, not much of a gamer, but I really like Jess but is Ian still around? Does he no longer do movie reviews?
During the UK lockdown of the last two months, Iain and I have not been able to record reviews. Jess is sitting in on the reviews until we can get back to normal
@@OffTheShelfReviews Need to revisit this one. I would like to see Iain's take on it.
Lance Henriksen looks like Jeremy Corbyn in this movie...hmmm now there’s an inspired casting choice.
I would also like to suggest the movie, Storytelling (2001!. 😎
I saw harbinger down and it's a good movie. I like it.
Matt Winston who is in the film is the son of legendary Make-up FX artist Stan Winston (Aliens, The Terminator, The Thing, Predator) etc...
I guess they should've stuck to just doing sfx instead of directing? Atleast everything in the movie like good go great
Kool review guys but I think I'll be giving that film a miss lol 👊
Was stoked this film got made after seeing what they had in store for the The Thing prequel. Then I saw the trailer . . . and promptly lost interest. Seems I was right to do so, sadly :(
Unfortunately i had great expectations for this film and it was quite a lame duck .... Lance Henriksen is the only reason to watch this film - even the spfx are confusing and wasted - the spfx guys probably had too much to do directing everything and the fx were way too low on the ladder of importance... i expected MORE fx!!!!
I liked this film didn't love it however worth giving a watch on a dark and stormy night.
Hi AJ :)
What the fuck, is liam ever gonna be back?
I've gotten so comfortable with Jess; who is Iain again? jk'
yeah this movie was trash. Almost every character is unlikeable or neutral, most of all that professor guy. Plus in terms of brightness and actually being able to see anything this was the darkest movie ive ever watched...
One guy has no color around his eyes and the other guy has too much...
Woah. Where’s Iain??
In lockdown
👍🎬🎥👊
how on earth have you guys managed 47 mins talking about this awful film ? I don't care if its crowd funded or not its a bad movie simple as that and I know your not saying its good but other people seem to be they must be getting paid for saying that lol : )
Why tentacles? Why is it always freaking tentacles??? It's like H. P. Lovecraft's fondness for them has infected every single creature design in the past 25 years. Even the non-tentacle monsters have tentacle things hanging off them.
