    I agree with Gary, even though Bloodlines was severally butchered by the producers, it's far better than Hellraiser 3, with a more interesting storyline. It's a real shame a lot of scenes have been deleted, because a fan edit could turn this film into a superior sequel.

    I knew Hellraiser: Bloodline was a troubled production, but I had no idea the studio interference was so great! That being said, I enjoyed Bloodline. In my book it ranks third (after Hellbound: Hellraiser II and Hellraiser), warts and all.

      @@GentleGiantAudio Yeah, that was Anthony Hickok (Waxwork). I had forgotten about it till you mentioned it. I have to say I didn't hate it because that ending was awesome (the idea that the evil emanating from the Lament Configuration was so strong that it Cthulhu-like influenced the minds of the architects and builders of a skyscraper is an interesting idea that could have perhaps led somewhere.
      It vaguely reminded me of Poltergeist III, a movie I also enjoyed, for the most part (which is saying something because the writing and acting are fairly cringe at points)

    Pinhead does say, "do I look like someone who cares what God thinks?", but he never specifies which God....it's never confirmed that he refers to the Judeo-Christian God. I think it's left open-ended so that the viewer can interpret it whichever way will terrify them most based on their cultural upbringing.

    • @ThreadBomb
      @ThreadBomb 3 года назад +3

    • @DistractedGlobeGuy
      @DistractedGlobeGuy 3 года назад +2

      Correct. He's placing himself outside (or perhaps even above) the paradigm of human theologies--he's saying he's something we don't even have a *category* for. It's basically an extension of Barker's affinity for the influence of Lovecraft, and it's one of the few things _Bloodlines_ gets absolutely right.

  • @PotatoHedgehog

    I always enjoy the reviews you two produce. Gary has a tremendous knack for explaining the more obtuse plot points of a film, and Iain's commentary is extremely entertaining. I have a couple of questions for you guys regarding this movie though. I always had a similar understanding as Gary of what "Hell" is meant to represent in the Hellraiser series - that it is not the Hell of the Abrahamic religions, rather it is another dimension that is so abhorrent to us humans that we could only describe it as "Hell," and the Cenobites as "demons." The dialogue and events of the first two films in the series seem to be consistent with that understanding. I suppose we have to assume it is just a massive coincidence that the other dimension is also called Hell, or that Pinhead refers it as Hell since he is/was human and that is the best word he can use to describe it?
    Either way, Clive Barker's book from 2015, The Scarlet Gospels, does seem to prove Iain right about the religious aspects of the series. I have not read it yet myself, but I know that Pinhead (referred to as the "Hell Priest") actually encounters Lucifer in Hell (and for some reason does battle with him). The book also makes direct references to angels and God. I don't understand how that is supposed to be compatible with The Hellbound Heart, or how the Cenobites are described as explorers from another dimension - the two books seem to be in direct contradiction of one another. I was wondering what your thoughts on this are? I can't make any sense of it.

    • @DistractedGlobeGuy
      @DistractedGlobeGuy Год назад +2

      Could it not be like _Doom: Eternal,_ where there exists an Allighieri-style Hell dimension but also other weird alternate dimensions that cross it, one of which is the native universe of the Cenobites?

    As awesome as Jadzia Dax is, I actually liked this movie more than part 3. In fact I'd say my only favorite hellraiser movies in the entire series have been 1, 2, and 4, and sortof 5. 3 was like random fan fiction that didn't fit the tone of the originals. God I love the performance of the Cenobites in 1 and 2.

    Clive Barker's version of Hell in The Scarlet Gospels is very much a Judeo-Christian version, which was disappointing. Lucifer has built a giant machine to commit suicide, while the Hell Priest learns human magic to kill the distorted demons of the hellscape and take over Lucifer's mantle.
    EDIT: It was really weird to be such a fan of Hellraiser, especially with its Lovecraftian aspects, for it just to fall back on Judeo-Christian tropes.
    Leviathan is never referenced in the Scarlet Gospels, I'm assuming because Barker only wrote the first one.

    Great review. Unfortunately it is not good either but I found to be at least more faithful in tone versus the over the top sequel before it. Also the cenobite designs felt more in line than the previous ones. The music was also more enjoyable as well. It certainly would've helped if they did not start in the future and jump back. Poor Kevin Yagher, he might've had something.

    I found this Hellraiser: Bloodline to be a very unsettling film. Watching the two security guards get twisted into one cenobite was really difficult to watch for some reason. There is also a scene where the father gets decapitated in front of his young son and wife. Really harsh, and disturbing. I felt the space idea to be a poor choice, but the puzzle box/toymaker angle to be brilliant. Sort of an underrated film and it should have been a lot worse due to the production problems.

    I liked Bloodline quite a bit b/c it dealt with the lore of the box, the maker, the demons who came with it and some of the acting was also quite good. I also like the idea of a counter to the Lament Configuration. Elysium. It makes perfect sense considering the origin of the word and the premise. The film went into a bit more cerebral territory regarding the origins of the box and all who were misfortunate enough to come across it and solve it. The overall quality of the production seemed to be much higher than the previous offering.... (And b/c anything, even in a dog turd in a casserole was an improvement over Hellraiser 3's production values.) That movie still makes me livid. WHY. JUST WHY. That movie exists for absolutely no good reason. Some of the ideas were good in it but the acting, the special effects... no one seemed to take this movie seriously when they were acting in it so why should I botherI? After experiencing the glory that was Hellbound, probably one of my favorite horror sequels of all time, to then be followed by garbage.... my least favorite horror film of all time just based upon disappointment of not living up to its predecessors, so I wasn't expecting much for Bloodlines but it was captivating in its own way and actually was written somewhat competently which was great after watching Hellraiser 3, which again is a terribly stupid movie, and that's being gentle and b/c I am growing bored of talking and thinking about how stupid and shitty and pointless that film is.

    Saying it’s Hell but not “the Biblical Hell” is rather like saying it’s Othello but not “Shakespeare’s Othello”. I don’t understand the point of contention. They refer to Hell repeatedly, Hell only comes from the Bible (and Leviathan is in there too), and unless you think there is a literal Hell that you can drive or fly to, the one in the Bible is “another dimension”. I suppose I don’t see what the difference is or why it would matter. It’s a practically universal concept. Even the “demons to some, angels to others” bit would make sense taken at face value as the demons were angels that wanted to screw human women and corrupt and torment people. To “explore” if you like. And they are from another dimension.
    Don’t fight is all I’m sayin...

Okay its not as good as one and two but i enjoyed it all the way through which is more then i can say about the third one. The only big problems i had with it are the fact that pinhead isnt scary anymore and he was way to easily defeated, the ending was just fucked up basically! Also the whole slasher ending on the spaceship could have been done way better, the space police guys where just a bunch of fodder and it was over in like 10 minutes, that was pretty dissapointing. Bloodline was really obviously botched, but I do enjoy Angelique and Pinhead, there are good horror effects and the 18th century stuff is nicely creepy. "Do I look like I care what God thinks" is iconic. I don't like that Angelique, an interesting new character, effectively disappears once Pinhead comes back. And the way the present and future stuff is shot makes it look cheap. A director with a better eye could have made it more impressive.
    Anyway, good review. I am only starting to work my way through what must be hundreds of videos!

    "Cenobite," is not a Race or a Species... it's a Title... It's basically their, "Religion." Cenobites are the Followers of Leviathan... and that's why they had to Follow certain, "Rules." There really isn't any Traditional, "Demons," in the Hellraiser Universe, like all that, as to Demon Possess People... We don't really know what Angelique was before being trapped in that Girls Body, but according to the Lore in the Comics, even the Engineer was created from Humans, (Multiple Humans, but still made from Humans,) so since there really is no traditional Demons in the Hellraiser Universe, it's fine to simply equate the Cenobites to Demons... because that's just basically what Demons are in the Hellraiser Universe... kinda like how in Supernatural, the Demons were once Human as well, (even if they Possess People in that show, that's not the part that's similar, it's the whole them once being Human thing that is the similar part, lol.)

    I personally prefer Pinhead (Priest) over any other of these movie killers, and his voice, simply awesome.

    Seriously. Pinhead calls Angelique princess as a mocking nickname. That simple. And she's older than him and probably a true Neve been human demon. That's my take

    Funnily enough, this is my first and only, Hellraiser movie I've seen at this point. This is my 2nd or 3rd time through these reviews though, so I know that I didn't miss anything with the sequels. The first 2 movies sound like they would have been pretty good, if I had went into them blind.

      I recommend the sequels. They're not great but there's plenty to enjoy.

    As an atheist, I appreciated Hellraiser 1-2 emphasized the "hell" dimension wasn't a "biblical" one. And also, that Pinhead/cenabytes weren't demons. Yes, the religious implications from 3 on, did irk my nerves. So, I'm you caught that, Iain, and you guys discussed it.

    I haven`t seen this one yet, but from what I can gather this movie sounds like so much wasted potential, the Angelique character in particular seems very interesting! Its a pity when what could have been a good movie gets blown up by the producers.

    It's funny that if you pause it during the scene with the hooks going into the guards face at 38:05 you can see that the hooks are completely blunt (their hook ends have been rounded) so they look like cheap Halloween decorations.
    How lazy was the SFX team that they couldn't have just cast real hooks and then make flexible semi rigid foam copies?
    I work as an SFX artist and that type of mold and casting can be done in an afternoon and it would only take a few hours for the molds to cure and then to paint, age and finish the flexible hooks.
    It amazes me that someone thought that a hero prop that was going to appear in a close up like that, was acceptable to have it look so blatantly cheap and fake looking.

    I side with Iain and the biblical Hell. Clive’s story it appears to Not be the biblical hell “another dimension” But Clive got shoved aside after #1 and you have to go by what’s on the screen, not deleted scenes etc. It’s God, Eden and Hell. Also Wikipedia is nowhere near a credible source. Lol
