Interesting. I have the exact same turntable, except mine came with the Series 20/Pioneer PA1000 carbon fiber tonearm. These were made in 1977 and 78. The PLC590 listed for $550.00 and the PA1000 arm was $100.00 more. The PA 1000 was discontinued early and replaced by the PA5000; dealer story was that the Japanese factory making the PA1000 carbon fiber arms burned. I saw this table at a dealer while I was in college in the late 70's and lusted after it but couldn't afford it. In early 1980 after I was employed, I got lucky and found a leftover demo unit with a scratch on the side at a Pioneer dealer for a nice discount. I still have this unit in regular use today. The only repairs have been to re-lamp the VU meter and replace a cracked DIN connector on the tonearm, (and touch up the scratch).
These were made to compete with the high end direct drives coming on the market by the likes of Denon, JVC, Micro Seiki, Mitsubishi and Yamaha.
FYI, another armless direct drive of the era was the JVC QL50 which was the armless version of the QL-5.
Love the RPM app. Gyroscopes in phones are really good. I can measure differences in speed stability and wow between peak and late night hours with consistency.
I remember when this turntable came out ! Great piece of audio equipment, but was expensive, I think around $300-$400 back in the '70's!
That was the price of a whole system in the 70s. Sure feels expensive.
I still have Hifi mags from back in '69 ( Advent , Dynaco 25, EPI 100 lore. ). In '78 cost of my 'mid range' Pioneer 117 belt drive auto - $175. top 0f line Pioneer 570 , $ 400. Dual 721 $400. Pioneer 750 receiver ( 50w /ch ) $ 400.Sansui 7070 60 w / ch $520. I don't have any reference to Pioneer 200 /590 ( U.S. ) but it looks of that era. Not imported, re labeled ?
@@SkyFiAudio where you there in the 70s? i can assure you that an decent audiophile system in the 70s went for a lot more than 3 to 4 hundred.. Thorns TT was > 1G... etc..
I own the little brother to this turn table. Mine is the PL-560. Same meter setup etc. it’s been my favorite TT for over 20 years
nice keeper.
Impressive tank, and very beautiful. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you too!
When it comes to measuring wow and speed deviation I believe the phone is a super precise device. Don't give up on it.
agreed, we seem to have it dialed in pretty accurately now. I will compare it to a scope and test record.
I've happily owner a PL-550. Limited black edition for many years now. Found for £50 in nr mint condition. Just keeps going.
Hi! Thanks for your awesome video! Do you know what issues it might have when all bulbs are not on? I think it's not the bulbs itself. Even though it's over 40 yrs old.
It would be really helpful if you coul answer me in this regard. Thanks in advance and keep up these videos!👍👍👍
This turntable needs a Ikeda tonearm to sing. I have a friend who owns one and has done wonders to this turntable it sounds as good as anything up to £50K. It sits on a minus k stand it's mass has been doubled, with a lead embedded polymer the plater upgraded with a copper plate and bearings brought up to current spec.
will look into the Ikeda, thanks!
Unless you're running a vintage MM (as in anything other than the awful 2M-BS Ortofons), any arm sounds better than the 3009.
@@SkyFiAudio the swedish house mafia one
I love to see this Pioneer PLC 590 it is beautiful, I wold love to have one in black piano lack.
did they make colors? I guess it can easily be painted since it comes apart.
The only way to check speed is a strobe or a test record and a scope.
Another fun video, Fernando.
Glad you enjoyed it
Nice video. Pioneer build some nice turntables back then.
Indeed!
Love your content. Is there any way of increasing your recorded volume level. According to Google's stats, your content loudness is -13.7 dB compared to ads which are recorded at about 0 dB levels.
Great feedback. I'll look into the mic setting. So cool that you can report the loudness level. Thanks!
Although i have mostly Bang & Olufsen turntables ( lots of them ) I have a couple of Pioneer ones Pl530 that i love ..I have also a big collection of early electronic watches .. All the calculator LED ones .And i have the biggest Scientific calculator watch collection .I have pieces that nobody has in the whole planet !
Audio guys seem to often like watches too. Cool collection you must have, gotta get an early LED watch.
@@SkyFiAudio I have the very first pieces .I don't have the Pulsar P1 //because it is in pure gold .And can be worth $20,000 .Bit i have at least 300 pieces or so ..
PS: It looks like your PLC590 has a dead "ON' light, (the yellow dot) to the left of the SERIES 20 name. Its supposed to light up when the On button is activated. Same bulb burned out on my unit, its a common failure that does not affect playback performance.
With a nice vintage SME II tonearme
Right? My fab.
Wicked turner.
Turner? Haha. love it.
The variable pitch control would make it useful in a dj application, surprised they didn't market it as a Technics SL1200 competitor.
Doesn't really have the torque of the Technics, but I guess it would work well too.
I have a PLC-590 and it really was designed for audiophiles. In continental Europe it cost the same as a Linn LP12 with tonearm (the first original version - really bad wood work, etc. - and very expensive) so the Shure tonearm came on top of that still.
Personally, I think the high end Japanese DD turntables from the late 70s into the 90s, like this one and a number of other high end Pioneers, Denons, Kenwoods, Technics and a few Yamahas were the pinnacle of turntable design. Big companies with big engineering budgets and expertise and in competition with each other lead to innovation and great products.
Speaking of DD turntables, I tried that RPM app on 3 of my turntables, a Kenwood KP-990, Sony PS-X600 and Pioneer PL-50L II. All read at 33.41 to 33.42. I think the app is off.
Agreed, you can certainly tell what huge engineering budgets they had back then. Current tables seem to be more "garage made". Interesting that you got the same error rate on the RMP as we did. You think they would just adjust this at the software level. Perhaps it has something to do with the iPhone version.
@@SkyFiAudio I used an iPhone 13 Pro. Most new turntables are a lesson in how good small manufacturing has become with ubiquitous and cheaper CNC equipment, but they're not innovative. Just looking at the frame on the Kenwood 990, or the carbon fiber arms Pioneer had in 1980, or the huge, brushless, coreless motors Denon and Yamaha had. A big reason I like these ones is many of auto lift/shut off that uses an optical sensor. So convenient.
@@paulv22 this new wave of expensive turntables are good sounding when played new but they look and are very weak and for sure they will not last around 50 years like this ones developed in the 70´s and also agree with the point of having no inovation just using what was already done with cheaper materials and the "change the cartridge and stylus each year" is related with the poor phono stage in most of the new amplifiers, if one buys a good cartridge and stylus it should deliver a good sound but then...another, i have changed some because the ones i had are not manufactured anymore, just because of having not the possibility of buying new stylus for the turntables, i recentelly bought a JNP/MP-300 from Nagaoka and a HANA EL, Grado was my choice but when seeing the prices i started to search for more cheaper options like the new Audio-Technica cartridges and stylus that deliver a very good sound and more adfordable than some brands that in the same price range they sound much worse than A.T.
there´s a gap in the 80´s where pioneer made it´s worse components ,it´s more late 70´s and late 80´s allthough in early 80´s there were some good options but made of plastic mainly, this talking about two cassette decks i own and there was the PL-707
@@RUfromthe40s They still made excellent stuff for the Japanese market. Take a look at the PL-50L and PL-70L (and II version). You can use these in the US but you'll need a voltage converter to go from 120 to 100V.
I am in Phoenix and have a SL-QD33. Technics. It has when it first starts spinning a light metallic drag sound which goes away after it spins for awhile. I have oiled the spindle. Any ideas as I can see where it might be dragging...and ps if I have 2k spare for a super cool TT, and one happens to be available for sale, I'll jump on it...but for now....? Chees,
Cant tell if its suspension table but make sure the springs aren't sagging causing the platter to rub.
You need Apple Watch ultima
Waiting for you guys to find the extremely cool top range JVC recordplayer with analog needle meters showing tracking force, range +++
If you have one send it it!! would love to video it.
Moi found a brand new never opened in the box dual cs 708q.
How do you control dust in your shop from that table saw?
haha, we do our best. We have really good central vacuum system connected to all the machines, plus air filters in the ceiling. Not easy.
What is the url of the vintage hifi site?..tia
Oooooooh la la la la lah what an excellent fantastic turntable I wouldn't mind that turntable my self but I carnt find one wear I am 😒🎶🎵😞🎸🎶🎵
This video is gonna make it even harder to find one I suspect.
i had the previous model ,instead of a electronic was a needle (kind of VU meter, display)that is PL-590 ,mine was the pl-560 ,if memory doesn´t fail me was given to me with a SX-1980 and some HPM-1500 a evolution of the better HPM-150 this because a uncle of mine couldn´t use it in his flat and i gave him my SX-750 and a thorens turntable from 82, this series 20 i didn´t saw that catalog and the display being darker i thought it was the electronic one but i was wrong that as better finishings but shure were the cartridge and stylus that came with this 500 and something turntables in late 70´s , regards
i forget to refer that i have in reality this turntable but i have a diferent arm ,originally had as this the SME type but i install on it a good tonearm and stylus ,when i wrotte the previous coment i didn´t had memorized the reference that is a PLC-590 similar to the SP-10 from TECHNICS , that i only own turntables from this two brands and also a DUAL and THORENS(in my opinion the best turntables), i didn´t remenber well but i was the one who asked to(sorry for my bad english i´m portuguese , i wanted to say :if they came with arm, cartridge and stylus from shure) install shure needles and cartridge on the PIONEER´S( there other technical terms i wanted to use but my english is very bad in this matter of electronic parts that could be improved)
What is that 'doo hickey' really called at 11.45? I must get one for setting tonearm height. Do you recall the name of the supplier. Best wishes
Search amazon for a VTA alignment ruller
Thank you. I have bought one. Great channel - keep going
Are the semiconductors in this still easy to find? For replacements..
lol, probably not. Lets hope they are reliable.
@@SkyFiAudio That’s what I thought! LOL..
All the more reason to have any old electrolytics replaced. Failed caps can damage ICs and discretes.
Why aren’t modern turntables this cool?
They lost the way. I agree.
Heaps of modern turntables this cool or better. They didn't lose the way. Look ruclips.net/video/z5xiDE-_X5w/видео.html&ab_channel=AnalogPlanet
... and it’s tonearm automation is silent dead (I mean a silence in loudspeakers)
PS All these iphone applications are pretty accurate. I didn’t see that their numbers were different to specs for new turntables. So, if it says 0.1xx that means it’s not 0.02x
Wow what a nice turntable,eBay here I come!
For sure, keep an eye out for one!
where?never found one
some criticise old turntables with this new wave of almost nothing is better but they are so weak and let´s see if this new ones would work better than this ones with a 100 years, they seem to forget we are talking about around 50 years turntables with heavy use
I have a chance to buy one of these but it’s $2700 bucks. What are these worth in good condition?
these are rare
For sure, will keep looking for one for us.
Meters are okay BUT a strobo is always better.
rarer than hen teeth
Great video broken vhs tape proven it's still more better then broken record disc 1 broken record disc can't be fixed at all yet broken vhs tape proven it's fixable with Scotch tape it starts playing again now broken record disc can't out do vhs tape specially everything proven broken vhs tape fixbel with Scotch tape it starts playing again with out no problem's
the watch is too low contrast. that seems sophisticated until you need to use it to see what time it is.
wow & flutter of 0.13 %is disappointing. My Technics SL-D2 measures 0.04 %. I will stick to my old 'entry level' Technics. The Pioneer looks nice.
Dont have much confidence on my iPhone for measuring W&F. I gotta get a proper meter.
lol. No idea huh?
No way that RPM app is accurate
Once calibrated it does great across many tables. You'd be surprised how accurate an accelerometer can be.
18 kilograms is 39 pounds. Nothing to sneeze at, but it's not 45.
an iphone can't measure the rotation that accurately
all this HIGH tech talk and then you have a loose LP record on the harmony record label resting on the top of an AMP? I dont get it
Only buy inexpensive turntables, if you must. Don't get bamboozled by vinyl nostalgia.
you no fun :-).
I had cheap/good turntables for years. Recently I heavily upgraded a Sony direct drive. Now i get it... Really good decks sound simply amazing. Don't need to be super expensive.
