So you start by commenting on just how expensive e-bikes are and yet you call a £6500 YT Decoy good value, MA criticised the DIY E-Bike, laughing at old tech and yet towards the end of the video was calling it cool and good value, the whole video was contradictory and lacked clarity as to what is affordable and expensive.

affordable means what you can afford. We have 4 E-Bikes, starting from 1100€ to 4500€. The more expensive ones are Full-Suspension-Cross-Country-Enduro bikes. 140mm Travel Fox 34 Forks and Evol Shocks and Bosch Motor. And the "cheap" ones are from Fischer. Suntour Forks with preload adjust and that's it. The Fischer EM 1701 was my first E-bike and I still love it. You get a completely different ridefeeling because of the rear hub motor. 750 Watt Rear Hub Bafang Motor with 60nm, it says 500 Watt on the Website, but you can get a cable for your pc and the bafang software and make it a 750 W Motor. And I gues my next E-bike will be more expensive than that.

Thank goodness Martin is back and he actually has some spine to have a laugh in the bike vault. That’s part of the reason that I watch these shows for entertainment and I’m sorry if you get upset with someone having a little fun saying a bike isn’t good looking but please it’s just fun. So thank you Martin for bringing some humour back to EMBN.

For anyone looking to spend under £2k for an E mountain bike then i can personally recommend the Giant Fathom E+3.I purchased the 2019 model and to be fair it's a nice bit of kit, looks the part and uses a Yamaha motor, you could pick them up recently for under £1500.I made a video of me unboxing it and setting it up for anyone who is not really into bikes and wants to see it all explained from someone who isn't really into biking and who has never owned such a bike, feel free to check it out.

I say don't scrimp to save money. Buy the best eMTB that you can afford! I have had mine for 2 years and done over 5000km on it which in the scheme of things is less than AUD$1 per km ridden.
It has added so much to my personal well being that at less than $1per km it was money and time well spent!

Thanks for reading my comment, that was a nice surprise, whoop whoop, and thanks for all the news and chatter and that Rockrider bike featured by Steve looks really fantastic--two grand for that bike makes a serious ride seriously affordable and its designer seems like a really nice, really knowledgeable guy. And personally, per my comment, this will be the year when I mod a mountain bike with a kit and get in the game as an ebike commuter. It won't be super nice or anything, but it'll be mine and it'll be my start. And, sure, I'll still dream of a getting a super nice Specialized and riding like a Northern California hippie looking for the perfect trail.

  • @bobpoor6348

The reason I ride a kit bike is because even the most expensive eMTB's on the market don't meet my requirements. My 08' steel mullet hardtail with a TSDZ2, a kit EMTB might want to look at btw, get's me where I want to go in the meantime. While the Lithium Sulphur battery might become a game changer I am always curious as to why there is little to no mention of the rise of the 2170 cell batteries over the 18650. Up to 5A per cell is the reason that bikes like the Levo have been able to raise their wh ratings just by going with the newer cell structure. Yet Spec, as well as others, don't seem to be announcing the fact that there is a different cell on board. I made the transition to 2170 cells as fast as I could and riding an "affordable" eBike made that possible. I now have 12ah, 15ah and 18ah 2170 cell batteries to choose from that are all compatible with my 3 eBikes, two gravel models with a front hub motor and the aforementioned eMTB. The performance gain of the new cells is very visible and perhaps you guys might want to put a bit of focus on the difference they can make and the reasons they exist? All the companies that were mentioned by the RockRider guy make 2170 batteries btw and although they seem to be showing up on the more expensive models in reality they can be quite affordable. My total cost for all three batteries was under $1500 for 2160wh's worth. Always a joy to see Martyn on the show!

The future is Fuel cells - coming soon mass market over the next decade. This will revolutionise electric vehicles. Electric bike tech will get much cheaper going forward, just give it time for more standardised components. Hub motors have been around for two decades, and have now actually come down in price over the last a few months with the Voliamart kits - less that £180 now, not including the battery. Nice to see Martyn - one of my heroes from Mountain Biking UK magazine! I even had the trials bike video on VHS.

Well, I can say something about the RR eST900, because I have it, and I will say, it's a really nice bike, rides smooth, with a really precise drivetrain and with a really powerful motor. Also with very sturdy wheels and quite decent tires, they ride well on road. And I changed quite a lot of components: Magura MT5 at front with Magura MDR-P 220mm rotor, Shimano GR500 pedals, Pirelli Scoprion S at rear, and I'm thinking about a 780 handlebar. What I can say? I can literally do enduro-stuff on that bike. Obviously not the same performance of a Full Suspended Enduro bike, but the RR really is worth the value, it can even cost 200 pounds more for what it has. The only problems of this bike are the brakes, the Tektro brakes aren't really powerful and the plastic pedals haven't all that grip. As I have it, with Magura brakes ecc., It does really is a eMTB, with really nice performance on trails.

Hey James, not sure where your going for your bikes in Oz? Last 2 years (2018 and 2019) you could have picked up a new Merida E190 600E for around $6k to $6500 with a bit of haggling. For the spec on it, nothing comes close at those prices... not sure what the attraction is on specialised as they are all more expensive at a lower spec level and even weirder given merida pretty much owns specialised...

One way of making an ebike more affordable is to get one through the cycle to work scheme if your employer does it. That way you can save around 40% and pay monthly interest free. You are actually allowed up to 2 bikes on the scheme and the max value is set by the employer.

Found this channel quite useful when I was first getting into the topic of ebikes and had no background in cycling.
Unfortunately the old school "car magazine" business model (ie bend over for the manufacturers who are actually paying your salaries and providing you with toys to play with) just doesn't cut it any more.
The purpose of a proper (ie 1000+W & 140+Nm) EMTB is high speed road work and massive fun off road. Chinese frames paired with Bafang mid-drives will deliver this for vastly lower prices. Just note batteries are still expensive no matter what, especially when they need to be a minimum of 52V to deliver the power you should be getting.
PS boys - do you ever ask the manufacturers where their frames, motors and components are made?

Your preview to 'how to conquer any climb' reminded me of this little trick only avail on ebikes. You know on steep, technical climbs you sometimes get thrown off-line and you have to dab. And usually that dab forces you to stop and start over on a regular/acoustic bike. Well I've found on the ebike, I can dab with one foot, but keep my other foot pedaling so the motor keeps going, keeping my momentum up so I don't have to stop. I use clips/spd's so this might be easier than on flats, but I assume you get the gist of the technique. I love it! Go ebikes! Cheers!

The Bafang mid drive kit is great, but is fairly high maintenance. The controller (even the new upgraded ones) run too close to their limit. You'll need to change / add battery connection in most cases. It wears your drivetrain out quickly or you'll need to add the cost of upgraded kit. Waterproofing is on you, and be prepared to have issues.
I love my 750w Bafang mid drive kit, but I won't be getting another one, the money I saved is wasted in time and parts. I would recommend a hub drive for commuters and a proper emtb for trails.

Happy BBSHD owner here on a bikesdirect dual suspension Rockshox w/SRAM NX 11 speed components. $1100.00 shipped for the bike and $1200 for the motor, batteries and everything else to make it go. 2x300watt 3lb batteries. 20 miles on a battery but can get 40-60 miles if I flip to 0 level on straightaways and downhills. Out of 9 levels, I need up to level 5 for really long steep climbs but for 95% of the time it stays on level 1. Most of the maintenance I’ve done is put air in the tires and oil the chain before each ride. I’d recommend this setup if you want to do novice single tracks or want to effortlessly power up extreme hills while talking on your iPhone about what to eat for dinner. Not recommended if you like lots of air between you and the ground.

Decathlon do some good bikes but their certified total load is only 100kg which is very restrictive for an e-bike. If the bike is 20kg that is less than 80kg for the rider weight. Ride beyond that weight limit and you will accelerate fatigue and the frame could fail, fatigued metal failure is not covered by the frame warranty only manufacturing faults plus of course it could cause a major accident although in fairness e-bikes with mid-mount motors can be relatively short life products. Once the motor or battery is uneconomic to repair/replace the bike is scrap anyway. In contrast some brands go up to 160kg total load which is 60% more although for other European brands 120kg total load is more common which allows riders up to 100kg approx depending on fitted accessories and luggage etc but is a more practical limit.

I think there is some cashing on on the popularity at the moment. Last year's Kenevo Comp was £4250, but the 2020 is £4999. Yes it has new stuff on it, but is that worth £750 more? Levos seem to have inflated quite a bit too.
Showing the Decathlon bike is a step in the right direction. They also have a full suspension ebike with a Bosch motor for £2700 which is advertised as 'all mountain' . It would be nice to see that go up the Snowdon route Steve used for the cheap bike. To be honest, that is the sort of route I want an ebike for. More bike tests in the £2500 to £3500 category please. It should be possible to get something capable in that bracket.

Home built ones are a great idea to try out emtb. I used to ride DH and BMX but had a Mondraker Foxy to try and keep my eye in when not on the others. I hate pedalling so the Foxy ended up sitting there and gradually gave up BMX and DH.
I tried the Tongshen tsdz2 mid drive. You guys have always skipped this motor. It is torque sensing so a great one for mtb. Stuck it on the Foxy and hey presto I was back into mtb. Used it for 6 months and was pretty brutal to it. Decided emtb was for me and just bought a Propain Ekano. Another bike you never mention. It is much more affordable high spec ebike. Customisable when ordering, wheel size and travel options and Fox everything for around 4k. Customer service has been excellent as well.

    • @hmmm5063
      @hmmm5063 4 года назад

Biggest difference is that the ST100 is a rear hub motor and not a Brose mid drive. Completely different technology. “Serious” mountain bikers wouldn’t consider it, but if it’s the only viable economic solution, it’s a bike and it’s got a motor .... it will do, but you might find yourself wanting to upgrade later on.....depends on what you want it for... for normal riding I think it will be perfectly fine. If you want to do jumps and stuff, the weight is more over the back wheel so may need getting used to

To buy a ready e mountain bike one of the latest ripoff. The don't even give the torch and power figures. I'm ordering a bafang HD kit after Chinese holiday 160nm of torch. 20amp/h triangular battery problably higher performance and a fraction of the cost of the ready ebike.

Only one affordable bike is presented and after that you jump in advertising for a 6000 Euro bike. This isso rediculous!
If you seriously care about our money you would mention for example the well made and affordable Cube reaction hybrid!

Not to mention his amazing battery presentation where it’s longer range, last longer and get u further (umm that all means the same thing....) I’m guessing you really made that guys day after he took time to write in to you guys. Lol Martyn must not be looking for followers 👏🏻

Andrew Cox what do you mean apparently it was released by Sony in 1991 for smaller devices. There’s no way we will be seeing large complex batteries in ebike form before it hits big tech companies in small devices like Samsung, google, huawei or apple. More likely we will get LIHV cells and increasingly light existing versions of li-ion/lipo.

    • @andrewcox4304
