Sometimes I listen to Chappell Roan or Lucy Dacus and just randomly start crying bc wdym I get to listen to songs that are explicitly about being in love with a girl?!?! It’s so beautiful and so important (and honestly wildly unexpected considering how sapphic representation has been scaled back in visual media so much lately 😭)

Ma Rainey is actually one of my ancestors! My grandfather accepted a lifetime achievement award for her a couple years ago, along with the film that came out about her. I hope in addition to us living in a casually sapphic era (which is crazy but soooo cool), we can also have more of the non-men artists that got us here continue to get the flowers they deserve. Great video!

Also, it’s not by a sapphic artist (it is written & performed by a man), but “Mademoiselle & The Nunnery Blaze” by Bastille is a lovely song about a sapphic love story from history! It’s about 17th century bi icon Julie d’Aubigny & the legend of the time she snuck into a nunnery & burned it down in order to help her girlfriend escape. It’s a cute song, and more importantly it led me down a rabbit hole of Julie d’Aubigny and her story 🙌🏻

This explosion in sapphic music has allowed me to celebrate my attraction to women, something I never felt I could celebrate before. I always had songs to describe my attraction to men, but never women or anyone else on the gender spectrum. It's allowed me to feel something I always wanted to, but could never quite reach :)
So lucky to be living in the times of sapphic pop
