i like the cardigan for each album idea but i wish they weren’t all the same cable pattern for each sweater. it would have been so iconic had she done a new sweater design for each album (something like red being a pullover cable sweater, 1989 been a cropped light blue cardigan, speak now being a purple balloon sleeve sweater, etc) and i’m sure the fans would have eaten it up. i’m also biased because i’m a knitter, but considering how influential the harry styles cardigan was, musicians could collaborate with yarn companies and release knitting patterns because i am sure some crafters would eat that up.

    • @noam3561
      @noam3561 7 месяцев назад +2

a different style cardigan for each album/era would be sooo cute you're right! And artists could totally jump in on the crochet hype by commissioning one interesting era specific crochet piece, wearing it in promotion, and then selling the pattern + doing a brand deal with the specific color yarn. Life could be a dream

i don‘t get why not more artists make merch like simple plain sweatshirts with a cute embroidery song lyric or something like that - those have always been my favorite kind because the artist name or face isn‘t all over the piece but it’s still a cute and subtle way to embrace your love for an artist. also i like embroidery so much more than print because it doesn’t get washed off over time. a really good example for this is the no tears left to cry sweatshirt from ari, i wear it all the time and i think it’s the perfect kind of fan merch!

soooooo i bought a Louis hoodie from his first tour and from the second tour - i am based in North America specifically in the Pacific Northwest- AND THEY ARE DIFFERENT QUALITIES. first one is way thicker and cozier material (my concert was in the winter as well) but the hoodie strings started to unravel before i tied a knot as the platic ends fell off after a year of washing and wearing. the second tour hoodie is a different color and much THINNER than the first, (this concert was during the height of summer) but has metal ends of the hoodie strings so they won't have the same issue as before. i don't hate either of them, i do actually love them and wear them both frequently. but for essentially $80+ i was not thrilled that my hoodie wasn't as warm the second time i was purchasing it this last tour. i don't know if his merch vendor or contract changed with his 28 brand starting? but it's something that stood out to me.

Hey great video! I've been working in the Band Merch Industry for a while. There's a lot of reasons why tour merch specifically is so bad.
Most of the companies that get the contracts for tour ALSO are doing all of the logistics, they're sending staff, getting the merch from each stop, sometimes getting them produced in different countries if the tour is global. It's a lot of work and very industry specific work at that, it's basically a sourcing job. Those industry specific guys are old and set in their ways. Nine times out of ten they've prioritizing getting stuff out there, not the creative aspect.
On top of that, most artists don't own any of their photos or assets. We get given literally one, maybe 2 photos of the artist from the era and MAYBE we can use the album art if we're lucky. The photographers usually own them.
But, the biggest reason the merch sucks is who's approving it. Working in this field for 3 years, Ive only seen an artist approve the merch directly a handful of times, 95% of the time it's some random 50-something year old tour manager or artist manager approving them. ALL MERCH GETS APPROVED BY SOMEONES DAD, NOT CREATIVES. Someones dad on the Merch Company side approves it, then someones dad on the Artist Side approves it.. DO YOU KNOW HOW HARD IT IS TO REASON WITH SOMEONES DAD DESIGN-WISE. I will be in meetings where they say "we need more women in their 20s to buy merch" and then shoot down designs MADE by and FOR that demographic because it's not "what they would buy". It is soul crushing haha.
Make your own band merch!! They're not gonna put you in jail BUT they do steal fans designs all the time and it helps the creatives show the demand for updated graphics.

5SOS has AMAZING merch for the most part. The only merch of theirs that I didn't like was their highlighter line because the material they used was not good at all, it was canvas like. But it made my day that you complimented them because so many artists could learn from them.
Also, another artist that has good merch is Carly Pearce!!! Her assistant designed a line of her merch and it is SO cute. One example: the clay rose crewneck. SO comfortable, attention grabbing, has a cute design BUT it's not over the top, AND it's wearable outside of being a fan.
I knew a coworker of mine was a 5SOS fan FROM her merch so that was really cool because I grew up not really having anyone to talk about them with (other than my sister).

I assume the process for making clothes was different in the 70s. I feel like bands used to actually be involved in making their merch, or at least the design. But now most clothes are mass produced and I hate to say it but mainstream merch has sort of become fast fashion. Also merch used to be a way of advertising bands, because you didn't have social media/ internet to do so. So if a shirt looked cooler people were probably more likely to look up the band

my favourite kind of merch is merch you'd never know it was related to the artist.
Before Conan Gray was popular as a music artist, he used to be a RUclipsr. His first piece of merch was a drawing he did of his friend. The drawing was popular on Tumblr, screenprinted in red ink on a white T-shirt. I bought that shirt 5 years ago, and I still wear it regularly till this day.
I've also bought merch from Cavetown - these were enamel pins that I have stuck on my bag that I use for work. The enamel pins have absolutely no 'Cavetown' lettering on it - they're of his two cats! I love cats, and again, the only way you'd know it was Cavetown merch is if you either bought those pins or have seen it on his webstore.
I've found that Phoebe Bridgers does really, really good merchandise. Her designs take up most of the shirt, they're eye-catching and creative. It's a nice blend of 'This shirt is about an artist' and 'This shirt could be styled like a regular graphic t-shirt'. I also like Boygenius' merch, because they've really leaned into that meme of any three characters being boygenius. They have shirt with three rats, and a shirt with three wolves. It's so cool.
I've also recently bought a billie eilish t-shirt, because the only thing it says is 'I don't know you at all'. The only identifying factor that makes it a billie eilish t-shirt is her logo being on the neck of the t-shirt - and even then its something only her fans would recognise.

The designing and aesthetics with the cream colors, the hearts on everything, and references to her songs from the album (i.e. the Dipshit hats, the slut T-shirts, and the homewrecker sweatsuits) are very well thought out, cute, and high quality as well!! would also like to add that the lack of plus size merch (good or bad quality) is so disheartening as a fan of mainstream artists. like i understand with indie artists if they simply just cannot afford offering it but there’s no reason ppl like harry, louis, etc. don’t have plus size merch and even if they have a 3xl option it’s not for every piece and most of the time fits like an xl/xxl which defeats the purpose :( it just sucks wanting to support ur favorite artists and not being able to. not to bash harry i love him forever but he preaches inclusivity and yet the only way to wear his merch is to buy fanmade merch or if you can afford to buy pleasing. sorry to rant in ur comments but i’m tired of only being able to buy a poster or tote bag(even tho i love them) at a concert like my walls are full and i have a different tote bag for every day of the year

I don't like to call myself a fandom member of any musical artist; it helps me separate me from the parasocial thing, but i have certain guesses that may explain this phenomenon, beside people being easy to please, at least in America (I'm not american):
    - Artistic education is expensive/risky.
    - Legal complications.
    - Cringe culture.
    - Fast fashion & oversaturation in the market
    - The question: Is it really necessary?
Personally, i don't like to wear merch of things i like. It difficults people to assign me i side of certain boxes, but, what about traditional artistic merch. Musical artists can sell prints, paintings, fanzines, keychains, notebooks, stickers. It may sound stupid, but it gives cohesion to their concept.
And i know it was a joke, but Jasmine, you do should care about the process of making merch, because doing it, it's easier to people to generate better solutions. Anyways, thanks for the video
