Pine tree made in four minutes with a drill, wire, fibers, hairspray and terrain foam... That's so simple, yet it looks so good! Mr. Slater, you are a GENIUS... :O
great idea . going to hobby lobby today for other things. I hope I can find a green that will work for trees. i think villagers would flip out walking out their door in the morning to see a neon green tree smiling at them.
The green stuff he puts on with hairspray is dyed foam. You can get it in most model shops in the UK by the flock section. The Chenille is the stuff that covers pipe cleaners so you can just cut pipe cleaners down to size and fluff them out / spray them.
This method works very well. The only problem is finding Chenille Bumps 25mm or 5 inch or larger. Loren got his from Bolek's Craft Store online, but they don't carry them anymore. I looked all over the USA. No luck. Good luck. I use the smaller ones.
I can't quite make out what he is calling the fibers. Chenille buffs? bumps? I've been looking all over the web for these, but can't find them as fluffy as the ones he is using. I'd like even more fluffy if possible. I want to make much taller trees.
Wow thanks, just starting a new layout with my Granddad, were going for an alpine sort of layout with a logging camp, so this will save us heaps of time, anyone have any tips on how to build wooden shacks easily?
"Chenille bumps". Chenille are like pipe cleaners, the bump style have wider fabric in places, google it and you'll see. You can get them at Michael's or Hobby Lobby and similar stores, or online.
Please! I dont' understand English very well when spoken. Can you explain me what is that "green thing" he use for the branches of the tree? Who sell it? Second question. He use "terrain foam" for the leaves. Is terrain foam that thing used in flowers shops? It's like sponge...hoe he make a dust from it?
this has nothing to do with trees, but my son (and husband) are also named Loren and my son is CRAZY into model trains. We are building a layout right now.
Lordpower. I'm using Google translate but it doesn't translate "acerrin", "buala". Can you explain me again. I understand that you use green paint in a "vaso de acerrim de madera cernida". You let it dry. Then you "buala tendras"...sorry I don't understand. Can you help me again? Please!
amigo si es espuma de terreno que se puede comprar en las tiendas, pero yo logro el mismo resultado hechandole tinte de pintura verde a un vaso de acerrin de madera cernida. dejala secar y buala tendras el mismo resultado y mas barato.

wow this is genius. And looks pretty simple :D What's the thing you set the one half of wire into though? That wooden thing with the ridges?
Seems like a measuring tab, for different sizes of trees. Probably depending on the scale of the models, he might use a shorter or longer ridge.
Beautifully useful :D
Tekiusss!!! i need learn this... tnks!!!
I make mine (N scale) in 3 foot lengths, which I then cut down to different tree sizes.
the twisting thing he used was a pair of pliers and a drill

I laughed at your name, thanks for the inspiration in the morning
