  • EP38: WE LOVE BIG SUR - Five must visit stops we loved!
    On the morning of this adventure when the alarm went off early - getting up just didn't seem like a good idea. We knew all of the advice to get to Pfeiffer Beach as early as possible, it just wasn't in the cards for us. We were staying in a super comfy AirBnB house boat in Redwood City and it was impossible to leave on time. A constant reminder of the day was that actually driving up and down the coast on Highway 1 WAS the destination in itself.
    We arrived to our first stop Nepenthe for lunch right when they opened. It was like a sign we did something right. If you read any guides for visiting Big Sur, this iconic restaurant is on the list. The reviews normally read something along the lines of the food not being as memorable as the view - which is correct. Having that said, I particularly enjoyed the Goat Cheese and Roasted Garlic appetizer. We were seating at the bar facing the ocean and if time and money allowed I could have sat at that bar drinking wine and eating goat cheese in front of the ocean all day. It was a lovey first stop and we just beat the crowds.
    Next we headed to Pfeiffer Beach - but were unfortunately turned away. They have people blocking off the road turning people around as soon as the parking lot is full (most likely hours before we arrived at 12:45 PM). We first tried to beat the system and drove north to the first parking area on the side of the road. It turned out to be parking for the Buzzard's Roost Trailhead. Looking at the map it seemed possible that the trail would get us close to the road. The hike was beautiful, but very steep and we hadn't planned for it. At the top we actually found a way to get to the beach - hiking the 5 or so miles we would arrive at 4:45 PM. This was tempting, but getting back would be an issue and we had no supplies. I was honestly defeated. We turned around hiked down and decided to wait until 6 PM to try and re-enter the beach. Off to our next stop.
    Driving south we headed towards the Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park to see if we could see McWay Falls. With all of the closures going on in California it was unclear if we would be able to see it even if the trail was closed. Luckily you can see if from the road. It is totally worth the drive down even seeing it from afar.
    We had a bit more time to kill before 6 PM so we headed to the Big Sur Tap House where we enjoyed cheesy bread and happy hour drinks (note: not sure if they actually had a "happy hour," we were just happy to be there and have drinks). Finally at 6 PM we were successful at getting into the famous Pfeiffer Beach. The ocean was lovely, we found the purple sand and saw the Keyhole Arch. The perfect ending to the day.

    What a great video! The views were beautiful and we felt like we were right there with you. We did not see Pfeiffer State park it the purple sandy beach when we were toured hwy one, so now I want to go back and explore that plus enjoy the iconic views of the coastline. Awesome!

    Great video and now I am going to include this for my June trip. Is the hike to the beach is difficult (not fit that much but can handle more flat hikes). Any suggestion that we could do to avoid dissapointment?

      Hike to the beach is super easy - just a walk from the parking lot. #1 recommendation: get there early!

    So the walkway to the viewpoint of McWay falls is closed?

    • @JustAdrift

      Yes, it was when we were there and I suspect it hasn't changed. Still a bunch of beautiful things to see and do in the area!

    How is parking & walking to the viewpoint like around McWay Falls?

    • @JustAdrift
      @JustAdrift  3 года назад +2

      Hi Tiffany. Thanks for watching. When we were there, we had to park along the road and see McWay Falls from the road. This was due to Covid restrictions. When it's not restricted, you can take a boardwalk down to get closer, but I don't think they allow people on the beach. I hope this helps. Please let us know if you have any other questions.
