  • CN cut down and rebuilt both MLW S-3 and GM GP9 locomotives into booster units (slugs). They also bought some new units from GM Diesel Division in London Ontario. The power for the S-3 slugs was provided by MLW S-13 or GM GP9RM locomotives. The other slugs were powered by GP9RMs or GP38-2ms. Some slugs were designated Hump units and others were designated yard units. Even numbered S-13 & GP38-2m locomotives were lead units and others were trailing units.
    The slugs are seen in action in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec, Alberta and British Columbia.

    The only species of slug that will never leave a horrible slime trail.

    I have seen this set up before at the UP yard in Little Rock. Two switcher locomotives facing each other with two power slugs in between.

    Early 1990's, I miss those days! Before I knew what Road Slugs were ( Cow & Calf ), they would grab my attention in an instant, wondering why would anyone cut a locomotive in half. Since they don't need no diesel engine or prime mover, just traction motors, made more sense.

    108, 110 and 117 were bought by Trillium Railway. 117 was scrapped a few years ago because they couldn't fix it. 108 and 110 still run to this day and still in original paint.

      +TheTVGuy45 Yes you are correct. Several years ago I met the President & owner of Trillium Railway at a model railway show! I also have a number board from 106 that was given to me after it was retired.

    What's the difference between an S-13 and an RS23? They look identical in appearance

    You say even GP38-2's were leaders and odds were trailers, however this year I saw a hump set (in industrial service) with two odd 7500 GP38-2's.

      +Taylorover9001 - The Cando Railfan It is quite possibly that the leading and trailing unit equipment has been moved, modified or replaced. It is also possible that they were just mu'd without using the hump yard controls

      Where in Windsor is this yard? I know where CP's yard is along Crawford, but after CN left the waterfront not sure were they went.

    can you tell me what a slug is?

    • @david-othen
      @david-othen  8 лет назад +6

      +Nathan Fowler It is an un-powered unit that takes its electrical power from the locomotive to which it is attached. The extra traction motors on the slug use the power to drive the wheels and this gives extra traction especially at slow speeds.
