    Great video as always, the variety of locations adds a lot of interest!

      +paddyg Glad you liked the video. I had to do a lot of searching through my video tapes to find footage of these locomotives. They did not come to Halifax very often, at least in the early part of their lives.

    This takes me back to my childhood. Were those grain elevators in Sylvan Lake still operational at time of filming?

      Winter shots are my favourite; too bad we must freeze to get them. lol

      +JayJr2007 One great advantage is that there are fewer leaves on the trees!

    It was unfortunate that 3600 hp was too much for the 16-645s. SD 50's allegedly had a lot of crankshaft trouble which is why few are in service today.

    I love the sound of trains, back in the 80's we saw one in Canada that we had to pull over and watch, it went through a tunnel and when it came out the other side of the mountain, the rest of the cars still hadn't gone through. I wish I could remember the name of the name of the place. I thought it was Kicking Horse, but I'm not sure. There are so many beautiful mountains up there! We lost count after the 200th car! I seen one vid of Kicking Horse, but I remember lots of trees. I've been to so many places up there and I would like to know where that was.

    Seems like a short life span, troublesome? Or did they rack up miles/time that quick?

    • @david-othen
      @david-othen  9 лет назад +1

      +NewBoston Truck 1 I think they were troublesome. The SD60Fs which were built n 1985 & 1989 are still running - see upcoming video!

    I hated running those SD50F's. They always had issues. Get one on your train and you just know you were going to have problems.

      +enr3870 I wonder why after the success of the SD40-2s the SD50s were so unreliable.

    • @enr3870
      @enr3870 9 лет назад +4

      +David Othen for me it was electrical issues. They were known for the DB blowing up, frying traction motors, main generators failing catastrophically. I've heard that they had mechanical issues as well GM tried getting to much hp out of the V16-645. They were prone to turbo failures as well.

      +enr3870 Thanks very much for the insights. Presumably these problems do not exist with the SD60s

      +David Othen the SD60's are pretty decent locomotives. They don't have the electrical issues that the sd50's had and the 710 engine is way more reliable. The 3800 hp seems to work well as they're not nearly as slippery as the SD70/75I's which start slipping just looking at a rail line.
