    You just saved me! I was following a different tutorial for a top where she said she used about 350 yards, and I have about 750 of this one color. When she showed how to make the square, she then said to make THREE more. (The top is like a shirt-dress length and very flowy.) I busted thru more than 2/3 of my yarn in a single square, and figured, well, I have a pretty blanket to give my daughter. I could go buy more of this same yarn, but dang, that's a lotta yarn!
    Came on your video, see how I can join just 2 squares, and it's still gorgeous this way. Gonna go buy me more yarn and finish this!
    Thank you!

    I made a top with four smaller granny squares. I used the s c stitch to join the pieces together but, this concept is another option, the flow is smoother and I love the joining as you go. Thank you for that. I love the yarn as well. I am adding this project to my things to crochet list.😊

      I’m trying to find exactly the tutorial I followed for that but couldn’t find it anymore, I usually just search crochet straps, crochet lace strap, or crochet lacy strap/ribbon on RUclips, lol. I hope you find a design you would like.
      Anyway, it looks like after I did the foundation chain, I made fan stitch, not sure how many double crochets in each fan, then after the first row I turned and did the same on the bottom part or other side of the foundation chain but this time I did the fan stitch on the stitch that I skipped in between fans. I’m so sorry I cannot put it in writing properly, that’s why I don’t make written patters because I’m so bad at it.
      There are tons of great crochet straps or lace cords here on YT, I hope you find one that you will like.
      Anyway, thank you so much for the feedback. Sorry, I couldn’t help with the straps. ❤️

    Hello! I started with the galaxy granny square from bagoday like in your second dress! You mentioned that you freehanded to make it bigger, do you mind telling me what pattern you used to expand it? It looks like it’s repeating I’m just new enough to crochet that I can’t tell what you did by looking at it.

    • @KatsHooksBrushes
      @KatsHooksBrushes  3 месяца назад

      I totally forgot the exact steps because I did freehand and I didn’t take notes, sorry. Sadly, I don’t have the dress here with me anymore so I just zoomed in the pictures that I have. From what I can see I continued the square with increases in every corner of course which is 3dc chain 2 3dc, then chain 2 skip 2 stitches and 3 dc cluster on the next stitch and repeat throughout the round, let’s just say that’s row 1. Row 2, increase in every corner then dc on every stitch that means 2 dc on chain 2 since there are 2 stitches there. Row 3, increase every corner and back loop only sc into every stitch. Row 4 is the same as row 2. Row 5 is the same as row 3. Then repeat from row 1 to 5 until you reach the size you want.
      Of course you may continue with just dc on every stitch and increases on the corners if you want or any other stitches you want. I apologize if I’m not very sure with the stitches since I just also did trial and error and I’ve made that long ago. If there are things that are unclear you may just wing it and do what you think will look good. Good luck!

    I love crocheting granny squares. I adore your work ❤️ I am a long time subscriber of Bag O Day. Your channel just came up today. I am now a new subscriber!! Yaayyy!!! Thank you for sharing. Is it ok to use a #2 sport weight yarn? It’s 50% cotton only. I’m thinking of using a 3.5mm hook. What would you suggest? Thanks ❤️

    • @KatsHooksBrushes
      @KatsHooksBrushes  2 месяца назад

      I think sport weight is also good for this design. I forgot if I was able to make one using sport weight yarn but as long as it’s not the heavy or stiff type I think it would be okay. I think 3.5mm is okay although I suggest to use the biggest hook size recommended for the yarn weight for a more flowy and lacy effect because of the looser stitches. You may try a bigger hook size if you find the stitches to be tight. My tension is a bit tight so sometimes I use 3.5mn to 4mm even with fingering weight yarns. Well, it’s just me because like I said, my stitches are tight. So you may try a few stitches using different hook sizes to see what you think looks and feels best.
      Anyway, thank you so much and I hope you get to try making this design. Happy crocheting! ❤️🥰

    • @KatsHooksBrushes
      @KatsHooksBrushes  Месяц назад

      @Chrisc1995 If you mean the wavy strap pattern for the crisscross design, sadly I couldn’t find the tutorial or pattern for that one anymore. I just remember looking up here on YT tutorials for crochet lace straps or something like that. If you mean how the crisscross is done, you just have to xonnect the strap at the back to the other side instead, just make sure to add 1 to 2 inches to the length of the straps.

    • @Chrisc1995
      @Chrisc1995 Месяц назад

    Love it. I'm 5"7. How big should I make squares please? Would be happy with just over my knees.

    • @KatsHooksBrushes
      @KatsHooksBrushes  2 года назад +2

      You may try to measure the length from your shoulder/chest where you would want the point on the bust part to be (it’s one of the corners of the squares where the straps go) going down below your knees, that would be the length of the sides of your granny squares. But the sides of the dress are always longer than the front so if the front part is below your knees the sides would be longer. Please check the thumbnail picture if you’re a bit confused, I can’t really explain it in words, if only I could show pictures here. But you my check pictures on my instagram to help you visualize what I mean. I posted there some pictures of this dress. Here: instagram.com/justiseandjordana

    Would you please give the size of the squares you made for the versions showing on the dress form? I made one and while the corners on the sides come down near to my ankles, the center back is way up high and barely covers my butt. So for my sanity, I would like to know the approx size of the squares on your example. Thanks. They are very pretty

    • @KatsHooksBrushes
      @KatsHooksBrushes  8 месяцев назад

      Each side of the squares of the yellow one in the tutorial is 28 inches and 38 inches for the longer dress. Maybe try making the length of the connected sides on the back longer and shift the front of the dress higher, I mean pull the straps up on the front and then pull down on the back so the back part will drape lower making it look longer. But I think this will only work if the dress is a little loose. I don’t know how to explain it clearly in words, so sorry. Anyway, the design of the dress is really short on the back compared to the front and the sides. I hope you get to sort out your dress, so sorry I couldn’t help much.

      You just have to make a bigger granny square because the bigger the granny square, the longer the dress is. Just be mindful of the yarn weight because the dress can get heavy if you use bulky yarn, for a maxi dress it’s recommended to use lightweight yarn.

    Hi, what yarn did you use? How many grams and meters pr cake? Thanks❤

    • @KatsHooksBrushes
      @KatsHooksBrushes  7 месяцев назад

      For the yellow mini dress in the video tutorial, it’s 245 grams of fingering weight 8ply fine cotton yarn, so just 1 cake for the whole dress. For the other dresses shown there, the ones with gradient yarns, I used 2 cakes for each dress, approx 270 grams for each cake, 1 cake for each granny square since there are 2 granny squares per dress, so approx. 540 grams of yarns for those other dresses. According to a chart I found on Google, for fingering weight it can be 380 - 500 yards per 100 grams. Based on that, it can be approximately 1026 - 1350 yards. I’m guessing it could be on the higher end, around 1300 yards or 1188 meters because this yarn is very light. I recommend not too bulky yarn because I was told by someone who made the dress in a bulky yarn that it got a little heavy.

    • @KatsHooksBrushes

      Yes, since it’s sport weight so it’s not too bulky but I also suggest to make the stitches not too tight so the end result will be flowy and not stiff. I crochet tightly so to get a loose tension, I just use a bigger hook size than the recommended one for a certain yarn weight.

On the next row - Row 2, increase in every corner as usual then just dc on every stitch that means 2 dc on chain 2 space of the previous round since there are 2 stitches there. Row 3, increase in every corner again as usual and back loop only sc into every stitch. Row 4 is the same as row 2. Row 5 is the same as row 3. Then repeat from row 1 to 5 until you reach the size you want.
      Of course you may continue with just dc on every stitch and increases on the corners if you want or any other stitches you want. I apologize if I’m not very sure with the stitches since I just also did trial and error and I’ve made that maybe 2 months ago. If there are things that are unclear you may just wing it and do what you think will look good. Good luck!

    What size granny square do you recomend for someone who is 6 feet tall? (How many inches in length)

    • @KatsHooksBrushes
      @KatsHooksBrushes  11 месяцев назад

      Hi. It depends on how long you want the dress to be but as a guide, I’m only 5’1” here are the measurements for a maxi dress for me:
      From the chest (because that’s where one of the granny square corner starts) to approximately my ankle is 43 to 45 inches.
      That length should be equal to the diagonal of the granny square. If you look at the pictures of the dress, you will see that clearly.
      When you make a granny square you can just simply measure the diagonal of the square, so for me I’ll just check if I already reached 43 inches. But if you don’t want to measure the diagonal and want to measure the side length instead, just get the length of the sides based on the length of the diagonal. Let’s say 43 inches, just compute or in my case I just google it or use an app. So for the diagonal of 43 inches, I need to make a granny square with sides of approx 30.41 inches.
      So I think a granny square with 43 inches diagonal (or 30.41 inches side length), the length of the dress will be below the knee for a 6ft tall person. So maybe you can work from that, if you want it shorter or longer? If you want a maxi dress maybe add 10 inches or more? So let’s say 53inches, you can simply make a granny square and measure the diagonal length and it should be approx 53inches. If you want to measure the sides instead, the granny square should have sides with 37.48 inches in length. I just googled it, lol.
      So in short, Google helps, lol. Just find out how long you want it to be from the chest to the knee, thigh, ankle or whatever, and that length is the diagonal of square. You can just measure the diagonal of your granny square to check if you reach the length already or if you want to get the side measurements, that’s also fine.
      Sorry for the long explanation. Hope this helps.
      PS - Take note that the length I’m talking about is the longest part of the dress which is the sides, the front and back are shorter. You may check pictures again here:

    • @KatsHooksBrushes
      @KatsHooksBrushes  2 года назад

      The back part where the two squares were crocheted together is the bottom part up to the waist or higher. So it started at the bottom going up to the part where you want the open back to start. That one on the video, the crocheted together back portion of the dress is from the bottom up to the lower back.

    • @KatsHooksBrushes

      If you are still confused you may want to check the tutorial again starting at 1:50 for the demo with the handkerchief. It’s the same assembly process except I used safety pins to connect the squares instead of sewing or crocheting them together.

      This can be made into different sizes. The assembly demo @1:43 explained how the whole thing is formed and it will give you the idea also on how to adjust for sizes. The time stamp 18:45 which is the guide for the back part explains further how to adjust for sizes. Also this is a dress made with just 2 granny squares so you may make the granny squares bigger or smaller that will also determine the length of the dress. Everything is explained in the video tutorial.

      Hindi po ako makapagrecommend ilang ply kasi iba iba po kapal need na yarn sa mga projects, sinusunod ko lang ano recommended sa pattern or tutorials. Yung yarns po iba iba po ang kapal kahit pareho ng ply kasi iba ibang fiber ang gamit. For example itong gamit ko dito 8ply fine cottoon yarn pero manipis sya sobra, fingering weight lang tapos may 8ply milk cotton naman tapos yun makapal medium weight ata yun, tapos yung mga 8ply na hand dyed cotton, light weight naman yun. So wala po sa ply talaga, sa weight category po kayo magbase kahit hindi mismo fiber type like cotton, acrylic, etc. Ako kasi lagi cotton gamit ko kahit acrylic o wool pa yung ginamit nung designer pero depende yan sayo and usually sa mga patterns or tutorials na gagawin nyo sinasabi doon sa guide yung recommended yarn at hook size, kasi iba iba po talaga designs. Tulad ngayon may pattern akong sinusundan, suggested nya gamitin sport weight yarn kaya yun po gamit ko.
