great vid, i like it a lot. small correction: jack didn't meet kim during their "first week of college". jack and kim were students at UC Santa Barbara, and he used to hang out at the school's cafeteria--the De La Guerre, or the "DLG", which me mentions in the song Bubble Toes ("i was having lunch at the DLG, when this little girl came up and sat next to me.") this guy was really into kim, but she didn't want to go out with him. so one day, she sat down by jack and asked if he'd pretend they were together, so the guy would leave her alone. the rest is history. fun fact: in Bubble Toes, he says "her feet are all covered in tarballs and scars", because the coast of hawaii is often polluted from spilled petroleum, which washes up on the sand sometimes. even back then, jack was into environmentalism. fun fact: kim and the kids usually accompanied jack on his tours, because he didn't like being away from them for long. when he first left home to go to UC Santa Barbara, it was his first time leaving home alone, and he "cried like a baby on the plane", according to his interviews. they don't anymore since the kids are grown up now. fun fact: the song "Holes to Heaven" is about a surfing trip jack took with his dad and brothers when they were teenagers, and got stranded in Port Blair, which is in India--a leftover name from the time of the British Empire. fun fact: waaaay back when jack was first making a name for himself, he ate some bad sushi right before a show and got food poisoning. he had to step off the stage in the middle of a song, where he asked to borrow his brother's beanie, which he then vomited into--and then went back on stage ;D he said his brother made him buy him a new hat, lol. fun fact: jack's home is in the neighborhood where he grew up, and it's 100% sustainable and green, including the electricity and water. he still lives nearby his family and the people he grew up with. fun fact: jack's band and road team contains the exact same members now as it did when he first got started around 1999-2000. nobody has died or left the band. they're still the same happy group as they always were, and they're mostly old friends and family members who play the instruments and do the sound/lighting. fun fact: jack used to be big into heavy metal and punk rock, but when he first started writing songs, his family--including his grandparents--always insisted on hearing him perform the songs he wrote, so he couldn't write songs that contained "adult content" like cursing or sex. that's how he got started on his "PG-rated" music career. fun fact: jack dislikes horror movies or other things that contain "violence or upsetting situations". he doesn't handle violence well. how do i know these things? for one, i've probably heard every jack johnson interview and podcast ever created. for two, i volunteered with jack's environmental organization some years ago and got to meet him and work with him. and yes--he's EVERY bit as nice in person as he seems :) he signed my ukulele for me, too.
Thank you! I didn't know Jack Johnson at all, but I love Angel and It looks even better with your accompaniment to the harmonica. I'm going to go discover the others. They all seem very nice. Have a good day. :)
Jack Johnson was my inspiration to learn guitar. Nice video! All great songs! Some of my other favorites to play are "Home", "You and Your Heart", "Gone", "F-Stop Blues", and "Seasick Dream" to name a few.
This is a fantastic video, its equal parts a guitar tutorial for these songs, a set of interesting facts about the artist's life, and just a great tribute to Jack Johnson's discography and music. As a beginner guitar learner who has heard and loved Jack Johnson's work my whole life, I will be referring to this video all the time, I hope you understand how much this is appreciated. You've earned yourself an excited subscriber!
just saying that the more you do barre chords the easier they get, fellow guitarist. Just start playing them. figure out where to put your thumb and put your damn thumb there and start playing barre chords. they are so much fun. I can play them for hours now and I used to think they were impossible. don't squeeze so hard that your thumb bends, PULL with the weight of your arm and let your thumb support the barre, while it also serves as a guide for accurate landings. Your technique and strength improves within a week or two, and really doesnt feel like effort after a few months of doing it even a few minutes a day before you go back to open chords. You can even just aim for the top of the barre chord and leave the high strings muted, it sounds great and lets you playing. just start strumming a barre chord and take, let your fingers rest in that position, feel it, enjoy the pain because you are improving and branching out into a whole new area of guitar playing that will open up everything. remember that the entire guitar is based on a few shapes, so once you really visualize barre chords and why they work from the low E and A string, you are well on the way to knowing the entire fret board and being able to replace the full barre with little pieces of one to play all sorts of fun stuff over any progression
70 hours in the making for a 6 minutes video, so I sure hope you'll enjoy! P.S - what's your #1, top, absolute favorite JJ song?
I hesitate between Angel and Better together.
Banana Pancakes to listen to and Better Together for playing. (I love this chord progression)
Taylor
I know Im kinda off topic but do anybody know of a good website to stream new series online ?
@Cullen Lawrence Lately I have been using Flixzone. Just google for it :)
JJ's first three albums are three of my favourite albums ever - difficult to pick a face but it could be Drink the Water
Same, I absolutely love the first three
Bloody great video! I never knew he was actually from Hawaii, that probably makes sense with his laid back personality.
Great Video! Thanks!
Great video Cooper! I love all the tidbits about Jack you put in there :)
Thank you Sean, I'll make sure to include those in future videos too.

It's awesome that you've added the chords to everything, thanks! That must've been lots of work.
It was, but great to see people like it - that's what it's all about. All the best (:

Thanks from France :)
Great video! I've always enjoyed Jack and only found out about Ben Harper, G Love & special sauce in more recent years, Great artists.
Acoustical Buttnugget I think most people go through the same journey, they are sort of “Jack Johnson for the advanced” 🤓 (especially Ben)
fantastic video - thank you so much!

What kind of guitar is that I would really love to get one and start playing?
Hi man, it's a Yamaha LS-TA. Amazing guitar. (it has an internal reverb effect)
No upside down?!
How dare I (:
