Given that self custody doesn’t scale for precious metals, why would anyone expect history to not repeat itself if they were used for money (at scale) again? The custodians/banks would just start lending it out and people would again treat IOUs as deposits, and deposits as money.

I totally agree. When gold gets over $5000oz. the jewelry industry will shift to platinum as it has before and it will become more expensive.

So if I pay with cash or a credit card. The price for me is the same.. how do credit cards get a cut? Only time my cost is different is if I use my credit card for gas in certain locations..
