Lum's Ollie Burger Secret Recipe!
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 6 май 2023
- The Ollie Burger has its roots in Florida in the 60's with its creator, Ollie Gleichenhaus. Lum's bought the recipe and started serving up these unique burgers in their restaurants. Lum's hung in there through 3 owners and ultimately began closing locations in the 80s. The last Lum's closed in 2016. Having tried this burger now, I'm glad that this channel can help keep this amazing burger alive! Below is the recipe.
Marinade
3 tablespoons freshly squeezed Lemon Juice
1 1/2 teaspoons Seasoned Salt
1 tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce
1 tablespoon Soy Sauce
1 tablespoon A−1 Steak Sauce
1 tablespoon Corn Oil
1/2 cup Beef Broth
1 teaspoon Heinz 57 Sauce
1/4 teaspoon Garlic Salt
1 teaspoon white vinegar

I love this guy cause he’s a good person. He offered a burger to the guy running the camera and didn’t care about the video or anything.
And it just makes the video better 😊
Appreciate the support Daniel!
Wow!! A burger with marinate!! Never thought about this technique before!! It looks delicious!! My man John has the voice of pure rock and roll! 😄
Now go forth and try a Burger with Jerk Marinade, you can thank me later...
I love when you do stuff like this. Thank you.
Thanks for the support!
We had a couple of Lum's restaurants here on the Gulf Coast back in the early 70's or perhaps late 60's. I remember their beer steamed hot dogs the most. Looks like a tasty burger. I don't remember ever having one, but I would sure eat one today. Cheers Greg!
Never heard of this restaurant, but I used to live in Illinois many years ago and now I live in North Carolina. And sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night craving a Chicago Style Hot Dog, a Pork Tenderloin Sandwich, and a Hot Italian Beef Sandwich with Hot Gardenia and dipped. And realize that all I have is a bag of Chex mix, Hahahahahahahaha 😂!!!
It was really good, Rus! Thanks for watching brother!
Thank you for bringing these burgers back to life!
Much better production on this video.
Good stuff Greg and shout out John 😅
We had a Lum’s in the western suburbs of Chicago
Man that looks good. Excellent job Greg.
Thank you brother!
Really appreciate the way you keep it authentic, the dedication and effort you put into recreating these.
I’ve never been to or heard of these places (living in the UK) but introducing these pieces of American history to the rest of the world and keeping them alive is fantastic.
Thank you for doing these.
Thank you Jack. Many of these place I had never heard up until my viewers educated me. Cheers!
Love the handheld vibe on this video.
I've been to the old Nebraska location back in the day.
Thumbs up to big John!
Cheers to John for patiently waiting for his turn to taste. It looks worth the wait👍😊
LOL! "Voice of an angle." Another great burger!
Heinz 57! Old-School!
The marinade is an interesting concept for a burger.
Best burger on the planet. Period.
Amazing burger Gregg! Great to see you getting the family involved and up here in beautiful northern CA for a change!
There is still a single Ollie's Trolley location located in Louisville Kentucky
I ate there today, and this isnt even close
Now that I’ve watched your finished video, I’m jaggin’ for another taste of that delicious burger. Thanks for letting me join in on the fun! 🍻🍔
Greg, thank you so much for your videos. I have watched you since 2009-2010 . I appreciate how respectful you are in your videos. You are the very few who on RUclips that I feel safe to allow my kids to watch. Have a great week ahead sir.
we used to eat at Lums because of the hotdogs steamed in beer.
There is an Ollie Burger (trolley) in Louisville Kentucky
Yes! Best burger channel BY FAR on RUclips!
I thought I'd never seen this burger again until I was in Heaven. Thank you!
Fun video Greg, burger looks great. I vaguely remember Lum's
Love it! Good, simple burger. Sometimes I add the marinade before I build the patties, then build.
Sure wish I could have tried amazing looking burger back in the day but your creation looks killer!
Those trees in the background! Looks like Japan!
My best friend was the head cook at Lums in Sarasota Florida... I checked with him on this. The only thing I would do is add the lettuce, tomatoes and grilled onions. That's the way they were served at Lums in Sarasota back in the 70's.
Simple can be better,I'll try this next weekend for sure.
This is burger science. And I love it! Thanks a ton, Greg!
Missed your uploads Ballistic Burgers!
Love! the lost burger series, thank you
Grew up in the 60s near Lums and there was an Ollie’s Trolly in my college town. I look forward to trying the recipe. Thanks!
Love it bro. We have some awesome burgers in Australia and in Perth!
This is my favorite burger channel right here!
I adore your channel, I didn't realize I'd start becoming such a burger nerd but here I am rewatching this vid to make one of my own.
Fantastic Greg! You always make such great lookin burgers. You are the burger King. Keep up the great work brother 👍
You can also use Terry Ho's Spicy Yum Yum Sauce instead of Thousand Island.
There’s an Ollie’s trolley in Louisville Kentucky still opened!
There’s an Ollie’s Trolley still open on Central Avenue in Cincinnati’s West End Neighborhood. It’s worth visiting, if you’re in town, but they’re only open until 5pm. I think the Ollie Burger recipe has changed over the years. When I got burgers from the little red trolley back in the 1970s, they fried up the burgers and then steamed the cooked burgers in a marinade that definitely included caraway seeds, as when they opened the steamer drawer you could see the seeds in the marinade and on the burgers they served. I think the “new” owners tweaked the recipe after Lums closed because I haven’t noticed caraway seeds on the burgers in over 40 years. I liked the Ollie Burger better in the ‘70s, but everyone misses things the way they were when they were young.
Love the history, Greg! Keep up the awesome work!
Thank you Ant!
I remember one of the Ollie’s Trollies near where I grew up in the Midwest. Unfortunately I never went there… great looking burger though!
Cheers
Doc
We had a Lums in my town as a child. I loved the hotdogs but never tried the Ollie burger. Wish they would come back❤
This is my favorite style of vid Greg!!! Down to earth and simple like me:) Loved it man, thank you!
Cheers, Brian!
I liked it. So I thumbed it up.👍🏻 lol
Super delicious burgers! :)
Love the garden cookout thanks
Thank you for watching!
I must say that it's a great looking burger. Cheers, Greg! ✌️🍔
Great recipe. I love when you do this wonderful research and it comes out Good 💯
Thank you Jeff. These are fun videos for me to make.
Cooking delicious food for family! Food is your Love Language. Bravo! 🥰
Thanks, Scott!
Miami native here who frequented Lum's in high school.....one of the best burgers!
Lovin john’s voice. Baritone 😎
Great. I love those simple Burgers 😍
You n me both!
Looks like a great burger. I can’t wait to give it try. Thanks.
Thanks for watching Paul!
Great vid i am definitely trying this one. Your brother in law seems like a cool dude
Thank you, Dylan. John is a great guy!
If I could give 5 thumbs up I would. Keep up the great work Greg!
I grew up in central Illinois and this was my favorite Lums dish!
Thank you for watching, Robert.
Had many an Ollie Burger at Lum's in Peoria, IL. Loved them.
Thanks for watching!
Very cool. Remember arriving in South Florida as a 17 yr-old [from Phila] and discovering Lums.. This burger will soon be done here [Central Florida] moving it up the list of what I what to try. Am positive I had one - though don't specifically remember but Lums was a go-to place back in the day.
Ate at Lum’s so many times in the 70s but only for the hotdogs. I totally missed out and can’t wait to try this burger. Thanks for discovering!
Thanks for watching Gary!
I'm making that burger tomorrow night. Great video, as always!
Also, your camera man sounds like Paul Bunyan, which is cool.
G'day John, all 6' 4" of you from Australia 👍
Wow what a burger creation, worth every cent of the $1M.
I've never had a liquid marinade burger before, only the dry ingredient one's.
Perfect with the thousand island dressing and mozzarella cheese.
Great video mate, well worth the trip.
Cheers burger buddy 👍🤤😀
Yeah, my first marinaded burger right here on video. It was really good!
@@BallisticBurgers Great work Greg and John. From Down Under 🦘
This sounds very interesting. I'm going to try that marinade on steak.
I like to get marinated when I cook burgers outside. Usually with beer. Sometimes whiskey.
Now both me and my burger will be marinated.
The Ollie burger is still a thing and still being made today at Ollie's Trolley in Louisville KY.
Really need Ollie fries with that burger!
Your brother in law needs his own radio show. Haa good episode
I love the historical burgers. Still want you to figure out the Bacon habanero ranch quarter pounder for me! ;)
I've been marinating burger patties for years. It's just some Lea & Perrins and a mix of onion/garlic powder, black pepper, and some dried herbs. They're so tasty they're addictive. That W sauce caramelizes and is a heavenly umami bomb. As long as you keep em real cold, they won't fall apart in the marinade.
I loved Lum's. That's still one of the best burgers I've ever had.
The Ollieburger still exists. In downtown Louisville, KY there is an Ollie's Trolley.
Wow, marinated burger. Who knew….thanks Greg!!
Thanks for watching Gary!
You brought me right back to my childhood visits to my grandmother in Florida! We'd head straight to Lums as soon as we finished watching Jai Alai!
Thanks for checking out the video Carol!
@@BallisticBurgers 🍔🍔
Sup Gregg, outstanding, was my dad's favorite burger, took me when I was younger and might be one of the first times I tried figuring out what was in it lol. Wish dad was here for this, I shared video, did screenshots of recipe, can't eat it now but half a bun and pureed for now lol. Great job bro 👊, in video John looks like a giant with a slider🤣😂, tyvm tc 🍔🥩
Thank you for watching Ronald. Hope you heal up quickly!
@@BallisticBurgers tyvm 👊
Great simple burger Greg! Super nice to meet John - Hope to see him again in future videos - (Just don't stand beside him! - Haha!) - Cheers!
LOL! Thanks Garry!
There is an Ollie's Trolley in Cincinnati and they have the Ollie burger on the menu. I don't know if it is the same thing. I'm going to go and find out.
As a teenager I ate at Lum's many, many times....... the first time I had a chili dog, it was love at first bite, I never looked back.
Omg,I hope someone In advertising hears Johns voice.I would buy anything he’s talking about.
I like to hear about the history of these burgers!
Hey Greg, another great one. Thank you for resurrecting these forgotten classics. I have two suggestions, one is “Gino’s, which later became Roy Rodgers. I loved their Double R Burger, next is Stewards, they had the best hot dogs, rumors said they were deep fried in bacon grease.
I'll see what I can dig up on them. Thank you Michael!
@@BallisticBurgers Thank you sir
Pennsylvania screamer burger..!! Please!
Never heard of that... Going to check it out right now.
@@BallisticBurgers it’s a Girardville and Mount caramel Pennsylvania. the screamer burger.
@@manbob15 Holy crap, that is a strange burger! I just ordered the "special ingredient" since they don't sell that here. I'm going to get kicked off of RUclips for doing this one! LOL!!! Thanks for teaching me about a burger that I have NEVER heard of!
Looks like you filmed off location from your CA home. No palm trees!
NVM, commented before the end of the vide!
I do what I can to help this channel by liking every video....I'm glad you took my advice and did away with the greasy porno music bit that was awful lol👍👍
It looks like a slider in John's hands 😁😅
Hot dog steamed over beer sounds interesting. Anyone ever try that?
Back in the early 80s I worked for Lums for about two weeks...I had to quit b/c the owner was this Pakistani guy that was just a miserable a hole to work for...but they did give you a free lunch..and everyday I got the Ollie burger....there was just something about the flavors that made me crazy for them.. I would have mine with lettuce and tomato and mayo...Don't remember mozz. cheese or the 1000 island.....the meat was thick and juicy...tried to copy it for years....I could taste the Worcestershire sauce....I knew that was one of the ingredients...had no idea there were so many other things..and not a lot of spices added to it like course peppers which I tried to use.....couldn't quite get it...going to try this one....
Knoxville Ave Peoria Illinois 3AM...
Las Vegas had a few Ollies Trollies locations in the 80’s, I was totally addicted to the burgers, I will definitely try out this recipe.
How long should the burgers marinate for ?
Thanks in advance.
Hey Greg would like to suggest for you to replicate a Frisch’s BigBoy which is headquartered in Cincinnati. Love the videos, food looks amazing!
Your brother-in-law sounds just like Hulk Hogan…get him to do sound over comments for your vids, lol…”that’s a good burger brother!” Cheers 👍🏻 🇨🇦
good afternoon greg!
Cheers CJ!
We had a Lum's in the early 80's when i was a kid but their Ollie Burgers were made with ketchup and mayo and corn meal in the meat mixture....still those looks tasty as hell!..
That's wild. I read a lot about the whole Lum's Ollie burger and cornmeal never came up at all. Thanks Baron!
❤
Wow. That's about all I can say. ✔⬆🏁👍
A man in Louisville Ky owns the rights to Ollies recipe and he runs one of the last Ollies Trolly.
I miss that place so much it was outstanding the locations in my city closed up years ago. The Ollier burger and the fries with the seasoning were so good.
The Franchise was owned by Ky Governor John Y. Brown at one time.
You are missing the rub /seasoning that was on the Ollie burger. It had cracked black pepper, kosher salt, course dried garlic and small dried seeds of some kind fennel perhaps.
Lets say what you made is nothing like an Ollie burger Even your sauce is wrong there was a few other ingredients in the sauce than just 1000 island dressing.
Yes ! I remember the Ollie's trolly in Louisville ,I used to go there often in the days of my teens.. I've not ever since then found better than the Ollie's trolly food ..
Lost Me At Thousand Island, Hahahahahahahaha 😂!!!
Very interesting for sure! Where's the sauce recipe?
I have a gold Weber. You don't see those on these BBQ channels.
Ollie’s Trolley still exists in Louisville on S. 3rd St, about 2.5 miles from Churchill Downs. Drove by it this past weekend while in Louisville for Derby weekend.
John Y. Brown Jr. was the one who bought the recipe and built up all the restaurants. He later married Phyllis George; Miss Texas, Miss America and CBS Sports reporter. He later became governor of Kentucky.
