    Great and informative review thanks a lot! I will most probably be purchasing the Meze 99 Noir's from Massdrop very soon. I do like the idea of non-fatiguing smooth sound stage. While the DT 770's sound amazing and mentioned everywhere, I do see a few mentions of fatiguing treble.

Do consider adding time-stamp guide for each headphone; useful reviews I go back and listen to for specific comments you offer. I really love the DT 770. They are so damn good. Fun, impressive and ''hifi''(technically good, detailed) at the same time. Best thing about them is the soundstage. Whenever i wear them i feel like i'm in a very good movie theater. I bought DT 1990 in search of even better DT 770 but it turned out big disappointment for me. Despite being open back DT 1990 has much smaller, closer soundstage makes you overwhelmed. Treble peak is ridiculous. Mid bass emphasis is headache inducing.
    DT 770 is very old legendary headphones but i think they are underrated among audiophiles. Combined with comfort, build quality and price they are one of the best in the planet.
    BTW i also hate M50X too. They were so popular couple of years ago. When i tried them i was like WTF ??? However i like big soundstage so it played a big role why i didn't like their sound. They sound like in ear headphones. But even bigger dealbreaker was the comfort. They are torture devices. Even 5 years old M50X made you uncomfortable lol. Imagine brand new one.

      DT770 are great in their price if not the best I always say that :) but Meze wins in few aspects for me by that I mean build quality, detachable cables possible to go balanced, super comfortable and very easy to drive. To be honest I was expecting 99 Noire to sound worse than it is 😅 for sure they have too much bass(its boomy and bleed into mids), soundstage is smaller than 770, highs are ok not harsh. Like everyone else said 99 Noire is fun headphone and you can always swap pads, equalize it or try other amp/dac combo to change the sound :)

    this is a true story. i was lost. hungry. broke. not a single penny to my name. in fact, i had no name. people would just grunt and throw a rock at one of my many exposed ribs whenever they wanted to get my attention. i was at my absolute wit's end. i was just about to give into society's will and pick up a book and learn to read. but right then and there, i caught a glimpse of the midfi guy channel playing on an ipad at the radio shack i live in. his zest for life and passion for ATH-M50x turned my life around. i threw that dumb book away and i even gave myself a new name. Today I received the 770 and can't confirm the V sound. It is incredibly flat, I was really shocked at first. Albeit, they aren't completely flat, "high" highs can stick out, but that's something you'll get used to, the bass is quite quiet, though.All in all they are really balanced and it shows that they are reference headphones. A lot of old, handmade music, without too much bass sounds amazing, like, truly amazing. Sadly, the left driver crackles at higher volume bass, which is why I return them. I ordered the Mezea's, too, to compare them both myself ands what fits my needs the best. I want to make music but don't feel the 770 just yet. Maybe the next, non-broken pair.

    Had some ATH-M50s back in the day. One of the hinges broke after about 2 years, replaced it with the ATH-M50x. About a year after that my brother decided he wanted some, he needed new headphones and had tried mine and liked them so he got them. Another year later, same hinge broke. Two years after my brother go his, what would you know... same hinge. I got some Sennheiser HD 599 after that, it's been 4 years with these and they're great, not problems at all and I love the sound. • @rainydaygirlz
    @rainydaygirlz 2 года назад +2

    The hate the M50s get is preposterous. It's often criticized for having to much bass, but the 770 actually has more bass in the frequency response than the M50s. The 770s also share an almost identical mid frequency scoop and the problems with comfort and soundstage on the M50s can be remedied by buying larger, thicker pleather earpads.

    • @rainydaygirlz
      @rainydaygirlz 2 года назад

      You also can't beat them in terms of a portable headphone due to their low impedance, detachable cable, super resilient (not necessarily the greatest) build, the sound isolation, and the foldability/flexibility. I have the BT version and they're just terrific for commuting, wear them everyday at work. Throw those stock earpads away tho, I hate them.

      They bose are good, but the meze's are so fun. They are so friendly to your ears if you are sensitive to fatigue.
      Meze's are fun fun fun and so gentle on your head. The ultimate non critical desk cans. I use these and then for critical listening I might switch to my planar magnetics, but I do that less and less these days.

    Most other reviews say that the bass on the DT770's is tame. Many say that the treble is overbearing.
    Most reviews say that they have a lot of leakage when recording.
    Pretty much the opposite of your conclusions.
    That said, I just ordered a pair of the 250 Ω , primarily for voiceover work.
    One thing that almost everyone agrees on, is that they are the most comfortable headphones.
    That's important when you're doing long-form work, such as an audiobook.

    • @soulfulfool
      @soulfulfool 2 года назад

      Bullshit is what they say I had 250 ohm version, sold it because my left driver rattle at very low freq, non less on stock pads bass was solid and well controlled & trebles was clear very clear never too harsh for me. Problem with 250 Ohm is that they need lot of power and I kind of disliked headband + velour pads felt very cheap for me. Now I kind of miss that beyer sound but got plenty of other headphones, for sure one day I will own beyers again :)

  • @ZeBubba
    @ZeBubba 4 года назад +20

    M50 has no soundstage, boomy bass and kind of nasty highs - they are just not very good imo. I wonder why they were so hyped back in the day vs something that actually works ok like the DT770 80ohm. I've owned both, M50 not anymore though. The Beyers have their flaws also, like the peaky treble and lacking mids, but yeah.

    If you have pretty much anything with old pleather that is peeling and flaking, just commit to it's deterioration and peel it off. Face it, it looks like garbage in the current state and it will flake crumbs everywhere, and in this case, crumbs in your hair. Peel off the vinyl and then use a stiff brush to scrub off any leftover glue. Underneath is usually a grey microfiber that, once cleaned from glue, looks nice and pleasant. Really, it can't possibly be worse than crumbling pleather. Yes, this applies to all pleather, including jackets, bags, headphone bands and even furniture. Yes, all pleather will eventually suffer the same fate. No, there isn't anything you can do to restore it.

      DT 770 Pro for sure, they are made for this purpose. I just got the 80 Ohms version and I'm very happy with them. I even like them better than the DT 700 Pro X and the DT 770 Pro X LE, and I also preferred them over the AKG K-361 and the Sennheiser HD 280 Pro which I also tested. Bass is slightly more present compared to most other headphones (only the DT 770 Pro X LE has stronger sub bass), treble is just right, nice and airy without being shrill, and the mids are present and pretty even. Add the wide soundstage and you get all the details of your recording laid out in front of you, very revealing, but still a joy to listen to if you're not recording. The excellent comfort is also something you want from recording/monitoring headphones. I use them mainly for practicing and recording bass guitar.

    The issue with the audio technica is it became very popular and when things become popular and mainstream, it becomes popular to claim that they are bad. Then morons who like to adopt other people's opinions repeat it online as if they arrived at that opinion themselves. It is currently fashionable to claim that the Sony xm4 is the worst sounding headphone and that the Koss Porta Pro or KSC75 is the best sound under $100. Goons.

      The funniest part is that some audiophiles will shit on the M50s and then jerk off onto the 770s which actually measure extremely close to the ATs, even being a tad more bass and treble boosted which is what they criticize the M50s for. A decent pad swap can fix most of the comfort and soundstaging issues present in the M50s.

    Maybe next time actually test the exact model you're trying to review?
    The 250/80/32 models of the DT770 aren't exactly the same....
    Rated down, as you're misinforming consumers here.

      He mentioned these are easy to drive. So 32ohm. It's not misinformation at all. Stop being a D.
