I read it when I was so much younger and I liked it, but I remember my Grandpa loving it, and I think it was partly because he was a trail rider for a few years and it brought all that back for him.
I love Lonesome Dove and it was such a surprise to me. I tried to read it years ago and put it down after 100 pages. Then picked up again more recently and absolutely fell into the story and fell in love with the characters.
Yeah!! I’m watching 1883, the prequel to Yellowstone, and it’s really reminding me of Lonesome Dove-except for the main protagonist is a woman and she narrates the story. So. So fantastic so far.
I’m very sorry but I will not allow this to be left here without defending my rebuttal. The girl in 1883 is sickening with her over the top ‘Southern’ drawl and it’s extremely sad because we have so many talented actors who are actually Southern and they are wonderful in roles yet they picked this to spotlight with the fake speech. The show was actually canceled because so many people recognized how ridiculous her accent was. That was a fail on Taylor’s part. (Sherridon) And he knows it. ‘1883’ in no way compares to the masterpiece of ‘Lonesome Dove’ and I can’t understand how somebody/anybody who has ever watched LD could believe it does. Lonesome Dove fans would be insulted
@ uh, a quick google can disprove literally everything you’ve said. Just tell people you didn’t like it, nor the drawl. Thats enough. No need to spout wild falsities. It was never going to get a second season, it was written to be self contained, as is clear from the ending and subsequent sequels. I loved it. It’s highly rated, critically acclaimed. Not your cup of tea, that’s all.
Your enthusiasm for LD mirrors my own. Absolutely loved this book, and can still recall the storyline & specific scenes. That is something that only happens with good books. For me, anyway. Many are entertaining while reading, but are ultimately unremarkable. This book is an American masterpiece.
Agreed. I read Lonesome Dove back in the mid nineties after having watched the TV mini series a few years before. Fantastic read. Thank you for your review.
I watched the whole review. I read it and saw the mini-series when the book and series first came out and have bought it again but won't get to it for a long time so I won't remember too many of the spoilers. Enjoyed your review.
Yes, it's likely prostitutes would have been the only women around, at least at the beginning of a settlement or work camp, etc. An interesting note about McMurtry writing women: when working on the screenplay of _Brokeback Mountain_ with Annie Prouxl, she remarked that she wrote more of the male dialogue and he worked more on the women because they did better that way.
So glad you really liked Lonesome Dove! I've heard people talk about this book and so far all of them really liked this book. Yes I love Jac too! It makes sense it's a good book to buddy read. I hope you and Jac will enjoy the second book in the series too (and the third one too if you read it). Good to know about the violence in the book. I skipped the spoiler section. Glad you loved the book!
Gus! ❤This is now going down as one of my favourite books ever - it’s very rare that I feel as I did over a book like this I did with this one. All the gasps! It definitely needed a buddy to help though emotionally for sure! Loved reading this with you and can’t believe that it was our first buddy read! Looking forward to carrying on the story with you. Great review Sandy - this one has stayed with me and I’m recommending it to everyone! 🤍 I’m happy to read the next one in November or December - I’ll be ready when you are! 😊
LD is one of my all time favorites. I first read it in 1988 when the mini series was in production. I read an article about the movie while I was reading the book and the article mentioned Gus's death. I was so peeved that this was revealed well before I got to it. This is one time the film is almost as good as the book. I'm glad you loved the book. I read the entire series. I remember that the other books were okay but definitely not on par with LD.
It's like the book of Exodus. Montana is the "Promised Land". Yeah, I missed Janey, and was glad when Blue Duck got his. I _like_ it more than _Blood Meridian,_ and to me the story details are more memorable.
I have read Blood Meridian as well and found it to be more confusing. Lonesome Dove has a pretty straightforward story and I LOVED the characters so much more than the ones in Blood Meridian.
I recommend continuing on with the series at some point. Book 2 has a rough start but it gets its groove going. Book 3 (Dead Man's Walk) is when Call and Gus meet... it was meh but I'm reading the last one in November. I'm hoping the characters come together better than in Book 3 because you know what happens in LD. Yay!! Just heard you're reading the next book!!
I like a good western every once in a while. *lol* I've never read "Lonesome Dove" but you made me curious now. =) I like a lot of POVs in my books and the plot sound interesting. Great review!
You do not look like the typical ‘girl’ (if I may) that would enjoy Lonesome Dove. I’m a reader also and I’ve said for years the book is ALWAYS better than the film, but in this case I’m not so sure. Duvall brought something to the film that the book didn’t express. Still to this day my favorite ever televised event. It literally changed my life. Since then I’ve lived to make Gus and Cap’n Call proud and I know it has made me a better man.
I definitely didn’t expect to love it so much. I went on to read the rest of the series. Now I want to reread lonesome dove. It remains one of my favorite books of all time
I re-read Lonesome Dove this year and my love for this book deepened. I’ve been hesitant to read the prequel and sequels because I thought the original is perfect as it is. I’ll look forward to your opinion if/when you read them. 🙂
I feel like in the minority that I disliked Lonesome Dove. I just couldn't like any of the characters. I wanted to strangle them all, lol. Even though I don't read many westerns, I've loved every Louis L'amour books I've read. This one just was not my type of book, but I'm really glad you enjoyed it!
Read it . Loved it. Cried twice.
😢😢😢 I can see why. So unexpectedly good!
This is on my already forming 2023 TBR.
Excellent!
yeehaaaaw Cowgirl Sandy ya’ll 😅🎉
☺️☺️
A great book. I’m so glad you enjoyed Lonesome Dove. I loved the characters. I want to read more by Larry McMurtry. 😊💙
I am looking forward to the next one!
I bought the full series which is five books. It’s my winter project! 🙂
There was a fifth book listed. It looked different though and I wasn’t sure if it was part of the series! You are probably right 🤦🏼♀️
I just went and looked again and can only find four books. (On Amazon and Wikipedia) what is the fifth book? Thank you for your help!
@@MsReadsAlot it’s four yes! In French we have Lonesome Dove Book 1 and 2 that’s why it’s 5 books for me. 😉😆
Lonesome Dove is my American Western Middlemarch. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️❤❤❤❤❤
I can see why! Fantastic
Yay!!! I’m so glad you both loved it! Just hearing you talk about it makes me want to read it again 😂🥰
It was such a fun ride!
I read it when I was so much younger and I liked it, but I remember my Grandpa loving it, and I think it was partly because he was a trail rider for a few years and it brought all that back for him.
Aww that is sweet
I love Lonesome Dove and it was such a surprise to me. I tried to read it years ago and put it down after 100 pages. Then picked up again more recently and absolutely fell into the story and fell in love with the characters.
It takes awhile. Definitely have to get past the first section.
Yeah!! I’m watching 1883, the prequel to Yellowstone, and it’s really reminding me of Lonesome Dove-except for the main protagonist is a woman and she narrates the story. So. So fantastic so far.
oh! main protagonist is a woman! Cool!

Eeeeh! I want to read Lonesome Dove! ❤ I’m so glad it worked for you so well! 😊
You should! It really sucked me in!

This book is an American masterpiece.
So unexpected!! A masterpiece for sure!
Such a good book. I bought the second book but gave it to my dad as I was afraid to go on, lol! May have to get it again.
I am excited and nervous to pick up the second book. Can it possibly live up to lonesome dove? We will see!
Agreed. I read Lonesome Dove back in the mid nineties after having watched the TV mini series a few years before. Fantastic read. Thank you for your review.
It was a wonderful experience
I am picking this book in November and I am so excited!! 😊
I hope you love it!

I love Lonesome Dove! Good pick ❤
Such an enjoyable read!
I'm wary of westerns, can't fathom enjoying one. Glad this one worked for you! I may have to check it out.
Completely can see why! This one though has such great characters

Interesting! I have seen the movie broke back mountain but not read the book. I didn’t know they worked together on the screenplay 😊
So glad you really liked Lonesome Dove! I've heard people talk about this book and so far all of them really liked this book. Yes I love Jac too! It makes sense it's a good book to buddy read. It was so lovely reading this with you! Absolutely wonderful 😍
Gus...
Gus was so amazing. 😍
@@-ParisTexas- will have to add True Grit to my wish list!

Fantastic! How frustrating to have that spoiled! 🤷♀️🤦🏼♀️
Alright Ill.add this to my list. Note I stopped before the spoilers so don't tell me when we talk.
You will love it!!!
My husband is not a reader in a general, but he has read that book twice.
Fantastic! Has he read any of the others?
