  • Right as Sam Altman was at the peak of his success, touring the world to espouse the virtues of AI, his board turned on him. Altman was unceremoniously fired. OpenAI’s coup is a story of secrets, betrayal, employee revolt and Altman’s expert political maneuvering to regain his position of power. In this episode, reporter Ellen Huet also examines Altman’s history of broken promises and alleged manipulation.
The biggest story in tech is artificial intelligence, and the biggest story in AI is OpenAI. The company’s rapid progress and blazingly popular consumer products like ChatGPT have pushed tech giants to dump billions of dollars into an AI arms race. OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, has been dogged by persistent allegations of being manipulative, deceitful, and power hungry - even to the point of being fired by his own board. This season of Foundering takes listeners straight to the heart of the AI explosion: feuds, betrayals, billionaires, and the extinction of humanity…. maybe?

Were you ordered to make the podcast anti-Altman? Sure sounds like it. The latest one is embarrassingly bad, it's like written by a teenager trying to sound intelligent and insightful. It's neither. (The podcast does contains a fairly good amount of information about him and his companies. But it's the almost childish opinions and spins, not well supported, that she injects that make the podcast increasingly unlistenable.)

Looks like the AltMen have come to defend Sam's honor in the comments.

at 32:10 cmon Lex was making a joke to ask a question to lighten the mood. That's Lex's style. It's a humorous question. If there's a villain in this story, it's the biased reporter. I really care for balanced news and reporting. I get that a story should be reported about Sam and all that transpired. I get that the truth should be told accurately. All sides should be heard. If there is any wrong doing in Sam's behalf then it needs to be reported. I also think that the writer wants Sam to be a villain and wrote this story with those intentions. I would like a real story please try again.

I liked the beginning of this series, but it turned into a very biased 'watch out' thing. disappointing tbh.

You're a good podcaster but a poor journalist. At least in this episode. It's clear you just don't like Sam. I'm not a fanboy. For all I know he likely is as Machiavellian as you're making him out to be. In fact, I'm sure of it. It's gotta be a pre-requisite for a CEO in such a cutthroat market segment. Whatever, the point is that you let go of your professional duty to remain objective. Your job is to provide facts, not spin.
I'll stay a listener. For now I'm happy to write this off as just a fly in the ointment but hoping you can at least entertain my critique in the positive spirit I meant.

This was a clear anti-Sam series. You have taken selective tweets, his spoken words, and other people statement to show the negative view of Sam. I am not favouring Sam, but what you have done as a journalist too does not count as professional. Let's for a moment forget everything and just ask one question to the board who fired Sam - Why they did not invite Greg? Isn't that a highly motivated political agenda and were they were interested in discussing the issue about Sam or just creating an environment to fire him? I agree with Reid - the board members were amateurs and should be questioned in the court.

This series definitely has more of a biased lens than I’d expect. I’m here to understand the real insights into Sam’s character and flaws given his importance but each incident seems quite reasonable. More biased lens than proof, I feel.
I’ve met self serving manipulators, and I think staff would pick that up over a period of time. Instead 800 people said “we’re leaving if he does”. That’s an awful lot of smart people to fool, and manipulate into saving you. You also know he could have just started again with the structure he prefers. No board, no Microsoft, no non profit, 100% control. Yet he supposedly worked hard to get back to the same complicated place.
Maybe there is something there. I don’t think the standard for proof we deserve has been met.

Why does this reporter hate Sam so much? What happened to neutral reporting of facts? Wow bloomberg, way to miss the mark
