Great video Matt I appreciate you taking the time to go through all the settings to show us the differences.
Matt you've got a great knack of giving detailed information without boring the life out of people, great video thank you.
Love the video. I have been very curious about this. Great info!
Thanks for that Matt, I changed my loft from 10.5 to 11.5 before I played on Friday thinking it would carry further and I actually slightly pulled my drives to the left, going back to the 10.5 as there was no real gain on the distance. Thanks for the explanation and the video. Keep up the great work Matt 👍
Informative and useful video Matt, will go to the range and see what’s best for me now!!
Really enjoy your videos Matt! Very informative. Thanks for doing.
Wow I've been waiting for one of you guys to make a video a bout this! Great!
Been wanting to see a video on the actual effects of changing the loft for ages…..cheers Mat.
My pleasure Jeff
@@Mattfryergolf don’t you mean Jef?
Good stuff, Matt! I just fiddled with the loft settings on my driver at the range the other day. I also tried flipping it 180 to the “upright” side which had the effect of closing the face slightly and helped straighten out my fade shot shape a little bit without affecting the loft.
Brilliant stick.with it
These are my favourite type of vids. Good content mate
This video has it all! From the beautiful cinematography to the expertly crafted storyline, I'm truly lost for words. Your dedication to creating high-quality content is evident in every aspect. It's no wonder why your channel is gaining so much attention. I'm excited to be a part of your journey and can't wait to see what unfolds next! Subscribed with notifications on!
Very Interesting, thank you Matt.
Thanks for that Matt, good stuff. I set my 9* Callaway Epic Max to 10 and love it 😊
I used to focus on trying to drive the ball as far as I could. Problem was the more I lowered the loft the more I lost it to the right. Then I moved the weight forward and added loft for forgiveness but to reduce back spin. That gave me much more consistent distance and reduced backspin to right around 2000 and now hit further than ever.
Great info Matt. I’m up the Driving Range tonight to play around with my loft 👍
Good stuff, I have experimented with my adjustable driver and noticed the same results, but also noticed on the lower setting my mis hits were amplified significantly!
Great stuff
Matt, you’ve been putting out some very educational videos lately! Thank you for helping me along in my newfound golf journey!
My pleasure that's the aim.of the channel, to help educate and entertain golfers of all levels 🙌
@@Mattfryergolf you’re succeeding! I found the results really interesting that the carry distance between the lifts was only 3 yards different on average. Definitely gives me pause for thought with my current driver
Valuable info, new subs
Great test Matt. I ALWAYS struggle with spin. I'm looking for less than 2.4K and routinely hitting it 3K+...which costs me carry and rollout distance.
Matt, you put out the best information . right to the point. Thank you
Thanks Ed hope it's helping
Interesting vlog Matt. Have to say if fitted for a driver that was adjustable I'd leave the settings exactly as per the pro / fitter set it up..though I would be awfully tempted at times to change it LOL
Cheers
Great test, would be very interesting to see the clubpath and the angle of attack of the club for each of these lofts. Is it the club that does it or are the person hitting the ball changing the way you hit it depending on the loft presented.
Im a subscriber and really enjoy your content Matt, youve come such a long way since the start of your RUclips channel, very well done sunshine 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thanks Olly that means a lot.
Another great video like usual
Thanks glad you enjoyed it
I will be changing this on the range this weekend!! Thank you
My pleasure
I’m subscribed great video keep up the good work
Thank you appreciate it
Hi Matt, loved the video. What degree was the straightest for you? Was it the 9 or 11?
Probably one of the best videos I've watched on club reaction.
Well done matt 👏 👍 very interesting
Thanks Roy glad you found it interesting
Great content matt👏👏just aqiuired a cobra sz adjustable. Be interesting to see what my stats come out at when I adjust it as I'm not sure yet what angle is my preferred!
Yes have a play around see which is best
Cool test, the results weren't what i expected. At the end of the season here i got myself a new driver and the settings made quite a big difference for me. I can now shoot much straighter and further =D
Brilliant glad it's working for you
Brilliant glad it's working for you
@@Mattfryergolf I did trade from the Taylormade Firesole to Tsi4, so there should be a difference =D
Nice review👍. Face angle is such a key thing for me - if it’s not sat square I hate it lol!
Yep a lot of people struggle with that! Looks are a big part when you put the club behind the ball
Interesting vid Matt.
Glad you liked it
Would you recommend taking driver down the range and testing in the different settings? I have a G425 and have kept it set at 10.5 as that worked for me when I tried one out. The outcomes seemed very similar from your testing but wonder if less spin would help as I’m not the biggest hit in the world. Also, subscribed now. You are right to call that out as I actually thought I was subscribed as see the videos constantly in list and only noticed I wasn’t in this video 👍🏻
I am the proverbial tinkerer when it comes to driver settings. When I was using the SLDR, that was a continual exercise that bordered on crazy. Now I am using a Ping G400 SFT (their draw biased club) and have found that I get the most consistent flights and fairways with it set at the "small -", as it is a 10deg head, it computes to around 9.5deg loft. I have toyed with the highest setting which I think it takes it to around 11.5. Carry distances? As I don't have a launch monitor I can only judge it based on total distance. When you hit it as short as I do, I am looking for fairway finders more than total distance that could be anywhere.
Question is when you change the loft degree do you rotate the shaft in your hand to line the club head back straight or do you keep your grip on the grip marker for the center of shaft at regular setting?
Just bought a new 2nd hand driver with one of these and I've been experimenting with the different lofts each time I play to see what works for me...haven't gotten dialed in quite yet so this video should help!
I hope it does 👍
Matt, I have a Mizuno ST200 9.5 degree loft driver. Summer time, turn it down to 8.5. Little lower, more run. Winter time, change it to 10.5. More height/carry. Dispersion is the same.
Nice job Matt
Thanks alot 👍
Great video.
The driver you tested had a standard loft of 9 deg. Would the same model driver with an 11 deg standard loft dialed down to 9 perform the same as the standard 9?
Would sit a bit more open so might effect dispersion
@@Mattfryergolf can't you re-grip to set the face to be straight to target? As opposed to resting the sole of the driver on the ground and letting the face open.
I'm a senior golfer and changed my loft from 9 degrees driver and added 1.5 gained 35 yards, and yes it's worth doing it 👍
Love that top mate
Quick question Matt. I know some people use the label on their grips to line up the face. With changing the loft would this throw off their set up much? Love the videos as always!
Adjustable drivers don’t have alignments on their grips for this reason
So, yes you are correct
Matt, kind of surprised to see the similar carry numbers. My big question would be about the amount of roll. Would have to think the low spin numbers at the lower loft would have produced more overall distance by a significant amount. Any idea? Enjoyed the test.
Very informative Matt still unsure what loft is best
The question I have is, do different brands of adjustable sleeves work alike? I have a Callaway GBB Epic and the sleeve is different then the one you showed.
How does the weight of a driver affect shots? My driver can have weights changed out and I feel like mine is really lite so I try to over power but I have a fairway wood that feels heavier that I hit well generally
Thank you Matt. I was always wondering the result from a professional. Could you also elaborate little more on the direction (draw or fade) when you change your loft? Thank you again.
He said that dropping in 2 degrees created a slice and adding tends to draw it in more
The Mizuno driver is definitely a tester for me.
I really need to try a 9 degree driver. The driver I use is a 10.5 degree one that came with my package set, no adjustments available and while I hit it well, it goes way too high for my liking
Super interesting. Love your channel Matt! Maybe another driver test could be graphite vs steel shaft. Jimmy Walker just went back to steel shafts. I wonder what affect it has. Keep up the awesome work!
Not sure if this is true of all manufacturers but the Ping 425 shaft has a second neutral loft setting if you rotate the shaft 180 degrees, but the second setting has a flatter lie. For me that worked great - the face wasn't any more open or closed but the flat lie matched my swing better...
Would love to see the difference of lofting up and then moving both weights as forward as possible. Maybe the forgiveness of lofting up would help and then the weight forward would reduce loft and spin for father carry.
Very interesting to see this. Can I add this comment with all respect.
A lower loft will clearly produce more roll in dry conditions so would be ideal on a windy coast links or similar.
Yep and more slice ;)
This would be interesting to compare to various lofted heads, comparing the (11.5) adjusted 9.5, to a head that is 11.5 in standard. Results might be similar but would negate the effects of changing the lie and face angle
Yes that would be a good test
It changes the grip alignment considerably, so you’ll have to get used to that as well.
Very interesting
Glad you enjoyed it
@@Mattfryergolf I have different settings on my Driver but they all feel, look, and fly about the same. So this was good to see how your swing really did change the ball.
Did not realize that face angle change portion when adding or subtracting loft. I had removed some loft from my driver because I thought I was hitting too high. With a tendency to slice, this may not be a great idea for me.
Yep be careful when changing
Curious what total distance would be given that lower one would be expected to roll out more.
What about the roll out, presumably the lower loft rolled out much further?
I tend not to change and test, but I will after that, thanks.
It's interesting even just to try
Which loft do you prefer
imm interesting, i have a ping G410 9* that I've set down to 7,5*, i usually hit a very high ball, and I thought dropping the loft would close the club face and reduce fade/slice.. I guess that's wrong and Maybe i need to go back to standard or even try 10.5
If it's a non adjustable driver 7 or 11 degree, will it still close and open face?
You said in this 65 percent of all people who watch your vids are not subbed i just subbed and ill like all the videos you post too if u use that evnroll midlock on a course vlog. I use arm lock and really want to see more of that.
Good video Matt! But 3 balls per setting isn’t enough for a good set of data. I reckon 10 minimum for each loft would be good.
Yes I agree, having a studio set up at the mo, so will be able to get larger data sets in the future
Good morning sir just one request, want to learn how to hit driver consistent, you doing perfect job sir
Thank you
Interesting, I have driver where nominal is 10degree and the face is supposed to be perpendicular or tangent to the swing path. I have never played with the adjustment feature. I practiced hitting the ball and if relaxed the ball goes straight where aimed. I can duck hook but I think that is because of a poor take away. If the face is opened a bit I get that ball starting off to the right and draws back to my target. Sometime I get a push and a fade, like I used to do with the smaller drivers (
Would have been nice to see the roll out distance between the 3 as well. I would guess the 7 not only carried well, but that since it was more penetrating, it would roll out more as well, adding more distance off the tee?
interesting, I have a 9 and 11.5 degree drivers and I hit them +/- same distance. only the flight is low/high respectively. so on windy days I pull the 9°🙂
Anyone know if you just open the face say .5 or a degree (keeping it standard loft) what the does to loft?
If the face angle is “opened” doesn’t that add loft?!
I read somewhere that the more neutral your path, the more likely you will get optimal results in the factory neutral settings. Does that make sense? Great stuff as usual...
Yeah I guess so as it will be a purer hit.
I’ve just bought a driver at 9 degrees thinking I could adjust it to 10.5 but can only go +2 so have to settle for 11! 🤦🏼♂️
The point that’s always missed with an adjustable driver is how adjusting for launch conditions changes face angle and direction. So anyone needing less than 9 deg will be stuck with an open face driver.
Couple of questions mate if you don't mind. What loft would you usually hit use? And for someone with a bit of a slice would you advise using a higher loft (and lower for draw)?
I am around 9.5 depending on the driver. If you have a slice, yes get the loft up as will increase the backspin and counter actthe side spin, to straighten it up a bit. Backspin is your friend if you struggle with shape, not all about high launch low Spin!
@@Mattfryergolf thank you for taking the time to reply. You're a gent.
Raised mine to 12.5 and draw
Callaway triple diamond ls rogue
Bombs!
This is interesting. When I had my professional driver fitting my 8 degrees and 10 degrees were legitimately 20 yards different. The ball heights were vastly different. Weight forward, smoke green small batch shaft, and 8 degrees gave me the best numbers.
What’s your swing speed?
@BuffaloBarber24 I switched to a velocore black 7X with an LTDX ls driver. No BS my swing speeds are 117-120. Although my attack angle is very steep so the short tee helps my launch angle and keep my spin rate within range.
27hcp whose only been playing irons for a year and abit . Want to get a driver but i dont have a clue what loft / version (low spin, slice fix or max) anyone got any entry recommendations?
I would think that the low loft, which carried the same distance, AND had much less backspin, would have rolled significantly further and wound up much further downrange than the standard. The high loft with more backspin would get much less roll.
The different loft settings would be range, not variance. Variance is differences within the data set due to unctrolled variables e.g. the human error mentioned.
Most folks don't realize that increasing loft closes face and lowering loft opens face. I love open face drivers.
I would like to see the same test with driver weights set neutral most forgiving. Looks like it was set at fade bias...
Thats a different test, however from what I have read there isnt as big of a difference with the weight adjustments as you might think.
Are you from London ?
Does the opposite apply for left handed drivers?
Yep just opposite to the right handed
Erm…. The deuce needs a recalibration or- or, or, or! Mizuno has unlocked Alien technology in the MOI category!
A person having a serious slice issue, its a trick to get a 9° driver and loft it up to 10-10.5° to get the face more closed to help out
That would help yeah
I bought the Mizuno ST-190 mid season, played at standard 10.5 Flight seemed higher with less roll. I tried going down to 10 n 9.5, more height n less roll out Tried 11 n found less height n more roll out.
Are you saying you increased the loft and it decreased height?
It seems like you got the exact opposite results that we would all expect 🧐
@@tonykelly6699 Ya I think he did it wrong lol
My only problem is I don't like the look of my Sim when it's not on standard 9 degree. If I lower it it just sits terribly at address
Best looking RUclips golfer. You're welcome.
So it's all about run with the lower loft
what was the difference in dispersion?
11 was widest due to worst strike, then 7 degree was 35 yards and 9 was only 18 yards
@@Mattfryergolf Thanks Matt. Really interesting content and appreciate the response. Just subscribed and looking forward to more videos
It seems you are very analytical and mindful of the physics related to golf, is that a result of your education in PGA or just your personal curiosity and attitude towards the game?
The portion of the story you are not telling is the much longer runout the lower loft will deliver. The more piercing flight coupled with the lower spin numbers will give at least another 20 yards of runout and even more during the dry late summer months.
But the question now is. What was the total distance of the 3 different driver lofts? Different trajectory and roll outs I think.
Yes, Very important especially out there on windy links courses
If you hit the higher lofted one good would be longest by 10 yards
When you change loft and it opens or closes the face, don’t you just hold it square to the ball anyway? I don’t see how that makes a difference if you just hold it square to the ball. I’ve played my driver at 9 and 10.5 degrees, never notice it.
I personally like to put my driver flat to ground at adress. If i change "loft" it actually just closes or opens face. In reality you can't change loft unless you twist face at adress to make it square again but then it doesn't sit flat at groung any more. If i change setting to ad loft i actually get low hooks after that. Set it to less loft i get high slices. I play it standard and i get straight shots.
It would be a more informative comparison to concentrate on dynamic loft (DL) rather than static loft. Physics tells us that 85% of launch angle is determined by DL and only 15% by attack angle.
You should do a real world golf balls comparison and see if there’s actually any difference
There are many videos on this subject already
Matt, you hit the higher launch driver so poorly, why wouldn't you take a few more swings and get rid of some of the bad ones? Three swings with each club is not nearly enough to help us out.
Well this is to my knowledge not true in every Driver, just like almost all. I'm fairly sure there are a couple of drivers like the Ping 430 series that do not operate in the same way. More loft does not mean face is more closed but the opposite. At least this is what i've heard, havent seen tested. Would like to see :)
