Mind you, this was an encore after a performance on Rach 3. Anyone who performs Rach 3 and has enough left at the end to throw out this cannot be human Edit: it's actually Brahms 2, sorry bout that
this is my favourite interpretation of this piece because Sokolov's interpretation is unique... the "usual" interpretation other pianists do is like it paints a murky deep water where danger looms in, something hidden and mysterious giving an unsettling feeling of danger.... but its only Sokolov's interpretation that paints a ship battling the high seas in a thunderstorm, violent huge waves, Kraken been released.. the drama of it all!!! lols...
It's very different indeed. Just for reference, normally when i play it, it's 2 minutes to 2 minutes and 30 secs(depending on dramatic phrases and tempi.). I checked his and it is just over 1 minuteXD.
It’s not just a matter of interpretation within the head-most pianists are simply physically incapable of playing as loud as Sokolov without severely injuring themselves
Simply brilliant, a divine madness his fingers simply fluttering across the keys with passion and fury!! Just loved it!! His chopin interpretation was mind boggling! Chopin reincarnated. Love it.i could hear him play forever!!!
I can see the wind ,the raging waters from the waves of the òcean.what a magnificent human being. Its like the piano belongs to him and no one else. I like the full and expressive sound, powerful, lyrical bass melody and fluid arpeggios.... I think Pollini sounded very polished but stiff in comparison, and doesn't flow like this... BUT I feel many of those thunderous bass notes arrive a little too early and seem rushed, like the time was chopped away, reducing the grandeur and gravity of the melody. I thought "wow you can make it sound like this! But why not relax a bit?! Why in such a hurry?" Still it was great.
Well in my opinion, he was simply magnificent! I have heard this many times! In my opinion, this is the best interpretation yet!!.better than Rubinstein, horowitz, Ashkenazi or even liberace!! Sorry! Fluttering fingers!!
@justinstacey7005 well yeah lmao Sokolov is just a pianist among others, why would I need to be always agreeing with him, also what's Chopin have to do with Mozart haha (On another note, I don't like his mozarts much, very anachronical interpretation why I understand some people like but is not my thing, same goes for his baroque)

Not really -any top level pianist can play that. IK I've played it that fast--even faster & of course slower several 1000 times. But,I only play the whole op. 10 op.25 as a set,I dislike playing only one out of context outside the group. Honestly,if he played Rach 2 or 3, a much quieter Bach/ Siloti Prelude or such would be much more effective &dramatic instead of crashing FF for 8 pages.( as all pianist worth their salt!) Loud & fast does NOT = great it equals OBVIOUS!
Sokolov usually doesn't play at top speed. It's more about the sound. As I recall, he plays the last movement of Rach 3 considerably slower than most, but with titanic sound which is under iron control
