This is absolutely breathtaking. Ólafur's music is way more than it seems, you really need to listen and not just hear to understand the feelings he's conveying. Spitfire has made it possible to get a piece of his genius in our computers. I'm very delighted to see his process and how the essense of simplicity fills up more than we imagine. Gotta love Spitfire for making this possible

One thing I've noticed in a few, is that he'll play the string sections done with the samples, and then compare it to the recording done with live players. Yes, the live players always sound better, but, call me crazy, not by THAT much. Sure, if I had more time or money or access to players, I would also use live recordings. Since I don't, it is inspiring to hear how "good enough" the samples are - for me at least. Keep these coming! Thanks!

The trick about changing the number of voices to make it match the Juno, thank you for that 🙏 It could get really overwhelming for my ears and cpu, it make sense for a lot of people to do that but for me it is changing the way I’m approaching every VST synth now. Thanks again

What he is talking on minute 11 is completely true. When I compose I usually combine 2 or 3 different sounds but I make sure the main sound becomes persistent. Example: I make music from landscapes of different games especially Zelda games. I have the main music sound plus the ambiental sound of wind, water or fire in the woods.

Brilliant insight into Olafur's working process - Huge thanks Olafur and Spitfire! I love the sound of the "Chamber Evolutions" library, but I am wanting to know .... Can this Chamber Evolutions library also be played as "regular string instruments", as opposed to just "evolutions"? (ie: to play melody lines, legato, etc). If not - can anyone advise on the best solo strings library to get as close to the "sound" that Olafur Arnalds gets, also in these evolutions? Don't suppose there is a "Olafur Arnalds Solo Strings" library in the pipeline? :-)
I have this question that I don't seem to get an answer to. Why on earth do blockbuster composers still rely on old hardware synths and hardware gears in general if everything is virtualized into software synths, samples and plugins?!
Go to gearspace and you’ll find plenty of discussion about this ;) In short it’s because computers can’t mimic the creativity and liveliness of analog gear and physical instruments.
As 18 Hands says, it's mostly about hands on control, imperfections in oscillators, happy accidents, all leading to more creativity. Also, for some people, they want to get away from the computer. Also, limitations can intensify the creative process. But also there is sound. Tom Holkenborg, who scored Justice League, Mad Max:Fury Road, will do his initial demos for the studio on virtual orchestras. But for the final version, the studio will hire a full real orchestra which he scores and records. Sometimes, synthetic sounds can't cut it, and for Hollywood even, they wold rather spend $500k recording a real orchestra than save money on a virtual orchestra, because they feel the money is well spent and the audience will notice the difference Horses for courses though. Some of the greatest artists work entirely in the box and get fantastic results.
Not totally unrelated - it seems to be the same with guitar amps to some extent nowadazs. Today the VST processors sound outright incredible (I use several), but nothing gives you the buzz and response of 100W of valves/tubes purring, ready to blast anything in the way ;)
@@andrewsmith8762 Completely agree, and for some it's a creative advantage to work in the box, not a limitation. We all have our own preferences and comfort zones - horses for courses, as you say. Someone with a background in IT, for example, might be way more comfortable with a keyboard and mouse than twiddling knobs when it comes to expressing themselves musically. Doesn't mean their approach yields less valid results (as much as some would like to suggest) 👍
Inspiring. I have the Olafur Arnalds spitfire collection. How can I route his Stratus to my analog synths? I believe there must be a step I am missing.
The Stratus VST Olafur is using is a custom built VST. The Spitfire plugin was based off of his version, they're not the same. Sadly, you can't route the Spitfire VST to anything other than the sounds it's provided you with at the moment. Hoping that they'll add this feature, but I really doubt they will
The synths must be retrofitted with MIDI. A polyphonic MIDI-to-CV converter of some sort. Either that, or he has a special computer interface that translates the Stratus notes into CV. It is a shame that the Spitfire version doesn’t send the matrix signals as MIDI. That would make it a no-brainer purchase.
@@anatomicallymodernhuman5175 I was very torn about buying it for that reason. In the end, I did, but I find without the MIDI capability, it's too recognisable as Spitfire's Stratus. Giving us the opportunity to use our own sounds would take it to the next level.

This is what i just read on the Spitfire site: Stratus is made up of curated loops which were programmed at the time of recording. Our library recorded the audio outputs from the two Pianos and Synths. Stratus therefore does not send MIDI outputs. An alternative is to use Stratus as a clock for your synths. Send the audio output of Stratus to a separate output of your Audio Interface. Patch this output into the clock input of your hardware synth. When this synth is then in Arpeggio modes, it will then respond in time with the random patterns of Stratus.
Yes but he also wasn't looking for sonic perfection. he may have wanted clipping on the track. There's a ton of noise and crackle but it sounds fantastic

How Can I send the MIDI information from Stratus to my synth?
Not sure Stratus is capable of doing that, unfortunately.
