DUDE! This video is exactly what I needed to find! With all this new found free time due to the state of the world at the moment, I've been looking for a new project. I've been saving up all my old skateboards for years. Just recently, I came up with the idea to turn my skateboards into a climbing hangboard trainer but was racking my brain on how to go about doing this. Then I stumbled upon your channel! I'm so stoked now to get this project started!
Have you ever tried to steam the decks and then press them to try and take the pop/contours out? I've wondered for a long time if you could flatten decks back to their original state with steam. You might be able to eliminate some waste if steaming could help flatten the decks before you laminate them together...might be worth a try. Either way, keep up the great work!
kind like bend end lets know it skate bord. long bord squre dosent manter if lines in bord is curved. but your right if wants add another step steam bores allow flatten it or turn heart shape have right forms.
No. That would never work. The reason they hold their concave is because the plies are glued together while they are bent into that shape. To unbend them you would have to unglue the plies, which would be impossible
I really appreciate how you make your small space work! You see so many makers on youtube with enormous studios. I'm a seamstress and work in our tiny box room! It's great to see how you fit everything in!
I’ve been watching this guy n absolutely love his energy. I used to work for John Grinnon Co. & Woodcraft back in Hawaii fixing all the woodworking tools. Seeing his shop n layout brings back memories not to mention his creativity is hands down inspirational n awesome. Love the videos bro keep’um coming!!!
was really inspired by watching your videos through the pandemic and have since started to play around with laminating end grain plywood scraps together into "lumber" and making little boxes with it. thanks for your enthusiastic content!
The lumber looks so rad! Excited to see what you are gonna make from it. And for a fellow small-shop woodworker it is really inspiring to see how much you get done in that little shop!
Mob grip is perforated so it wants to tear when you take it off. I used to work at a skate shop and would dread when someone would want to re grip a board that had Mob
Welp, looks like it’s time to make a hydraulic press at work.. and a tool holding jig for Printers/CNC tables. Thanks for the hard work and inspiration!
Have you considered chopping the tips and tails to join them together to make like a mitered herringbone? The lumber would be shorter but if everything lined up you'd have some pretty dope material to play with patterning and veneers.
Make a some gun stocks like a shotgun stock or rifle stock or pistol grips make something for guns out of skateboards I really think gun stocks would be awesome out of skateboards
What are the three pressure pumps to pressure the glue together for a day? Where’sa link for those? Can you make a video on how you made that gluing chamber/rack?
You should try out acetone soaking the boards. It will eat the paint, glue, and de-laminate the boards so you can press it all flat instead of having to cut all the concave/convex out. You could then just use standard wood glue instead of epoxy.
Great video. Just an idea, could you put the board under a cheap heat lamp to soften the glue on the grip tape? Then you could be peeling one while the next one is heating.
I've been watching your videos for a while now, and I think your collaboration with totalboat is... Natural. It HAD to be. It's perfect. BUT I watch your videos to see a crazy patient guy making awesome stuff out of broken skateboards. Not an advertisement for this tool or this product. This video had too much of it for my taste. Thank you still for sharing all your work with us!
Magali Mertens I appreciate you watching my videos. I like to shoutout the people that feed me and continue to allow me to do what I do best, which is making content. As much as I’d love to do it without them, it’s so much harder and to be honest, I’d probably go back to my day job. Also, this is a 4 year research. And I would’ve loved it if someone else came out with a video explaining why I should’ve been using king Arthur’s tools holey Galahad discs to remove the skateboard residue. But instead I wasted through hundreds of flap discs. Or pay a little extra to have the safety of electromagnetic stop switch and get a bigger stable bandsaw with 131.5 length that’s not only easier find blades for but more options vs. 115 inch. Either way, if you tap right twice, you skip 5 seconds...
@@WobyDesign I get it, of course! Thanking your sponsors is necessary. I'm not a professionnal of advertising, I'm just a watcher. I guess in videos I would prefer you telling us exactly what you just wrote me: why the products changed YOUR way to work. What you just wrote me really interested me because I'm curious of your work, not (yet???) on the product. By the way it feels very good to be read and it's very cool from you to answer!
Do wanna try to make a larger CLT beam out of skateboards? Might not be alowed to use it as a structural member, but at least it would look cool. Maybe someone in town has a machine to do those special finger joints.
I saw on the Discovery Channel's "How It's Made" that that is how another company makes skateboards out of old skateboards. They just cut the boards thinner (like 1/2" to 3/4" thick), and they use templates shaped like skateboards to determine the size and shape of each board and cut each blank to that shape. Then finally, after rounding over the edges, they use clear coat and ground recycled glass to provide the grip. And with clear coat, you can see the cross-sectional areas of all twenty of the skateboards which each of the new skateboards are made out of.
I'm starting to get into woodworking and recycling my boards. What tools would you recommend to prep the boards and cut to strips?? I'm already thinking a belt sander cuz that will make my life way easier then my dremel I use right now haha. But what else would be essential? Like a mitor saw or jigsaw?
Nice! Are you going to turn one of these blanks back into a skateboard? Since the "grain" is facing a different direction than the last skateboard-out-of-broken-skateboards. I think it might be stronger. But when it comes to making things out of broken skateboards, your the expert. Thanks
You should send a cut of those skateboards to Hydraulic Press channel!!! I wanna know how strong they are compared to other wood. Those skateboards are maple and they should be pretty damn strong!
would make a nice kids bed with those colours, tell them it's made from a rainbow tree. Maybe throw some glitter in with the epoxy next time so the coloured bits also sparkle.
You should make up some woodturning blanks and send them to a turner like R Humphrey. That's the name of his RUclips channel. There are others, but I really love his work. The others I really like are in the UK.
Sometimes you got to let the pros do what they do best, and you do great work with those boards. Out of line maybe but do you by chance sell lumber like this?
I'm looking at that finished lumber and thinking "guitar body blanks". I hate to think how long it would take me to collect enough broken skateboards in the UK though!
this is amazing!!!! Now I wanna make this as well! But I have ZERO material for this. Also, what kind of projects can this be applyed to? Because I can garantee the final product is really strong!

Can you try to do a skateboard deck out of epoxy? I think it will be interesting😅
The best finishing product is the video! Thanks.
Good one
Can you explain how to get use Skyp board?

@Thomas Pynchon dam u rytt, wut da hex wuz I evin thnkn
If someday I found out Woby had been beating up kids for their skateboards id be disappointed but not surprised.
Eeeeeeeeeepoxy
I'm impressed with. how organised you must be to have a workshop in a shipping container!

Cory Stewart why ?
It's the randomness of the grain that makes it look good !
Steam, a Press and then a drum sander. Time is money.
steaming would also make the grip tape just fall right off. the only downside I could see is adding moisture which you will have to dry back out

Woby Design oh cool I will thanks!

Can’t wait to see what Izzy is going to make for you to help with the grip tape problem.
Very good job
It's like watching an informercial and enjoying every minute of it :)
I want recycled skateboard wood flooring in my kitchen! Great job sir.
That stuff needs to be bookmatched and made into a guitar. So cool.
Dude. These look sooooooo badass
excellent work, congratulations.
Brazilian here 😎
That is some wild quarter sawn lumber!!!!
Great use of old skateboards they look awesome
I'd like to know Jackman Works' reaction after you said you might have stick with pallets... 😂 😂
I'll stick with pallets
Just to warn you, they have a pallet recycling facility right behind my shop so thread carefully
@@WobyDesign What would happen if you shipped some of the lumber you made to Jackman Works? I don't know if he would know what to do.
@Bourbonmoth Bespoke skateboard pallet river table?
That was really satisfying watching the epoxy ooze out when you pressed it down!
If you had a handle on the end of the grip roller it might give you more leverage. But idk I might have no idea what I’m talking about.
That's awesome. Now use the boards to make your dog a badass dog house.
Make a some gun stocks like a shotgun stock or rifle stock or pistol grips make something for guns out of skateboards I really think gun stocks would be awesome out of skateboards
This is pretty cool, he should definitely be wearing a mask when dealing with all that resin dust though
Wonder if the carving discs would work for making surfboard fins or if it would be to aggressive.
I think it would look dope if you added an edge to one of those planks and made it a shelf, or just made it half as thick and routed the edge
What are the three pressure pumps to pressure the glue together for a day? Where’sa link for those? Can you make a video on how you made that gluing chamber/rack?
These pieces are amazing! What would you make with them??? I think they would be great shelves, but I'm sure others have more imaginative ideas. 💡
Stoked you got sponsors. Looking forward to the future.
Come for the woodworking. Stay for the WOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

I was missing the "Whoo's" during the videos, thankfully the big one at the end made up for it
I'm new to his channel, sadly that whoos were a big turn off. Aside from that his stuff is pretty darn cool
Great video. Just an idea, could you put the board under a cheap heat lamp to soften the glue on the grip tape? Then you could be peeling one while the next one is heating.
As usual I love your videos ... keep going you always give me good ideas. my son loves your workshops. 👌👌👌
It's really beautiful. But outside of a workbench I wouldn't know what to do with it.
Now, that's what I call ply-wood!
This was very inspirational to watch, I have to start making things out of old skateboards now.

That jig that Izzy gonna design for ya should be awesome.
Nice! That would make an awesome table / desk top!!
Have you ever experimented stacking the skateboards like bricks when you glue them togther??
I don't have a shop or do any of what you do but damn if it isn't all super interesting to watch!
Beautiful lumber! Great video!

Yea, he copied me
... also: supercut of Woby whoos
I always forget how hype you are Ben 😂 love your energy
Hey man! You’re a huge inspiration. Thanks for the awesome content!
Should be wiping top and bottom with isopropyl alcohol before bonding. You’ll get much better lamination results compared to just sweeping.
Would make an amazing “floating” shelf!
Besides cost, are there any downsides to using epoxy over wood glue to laminate these boards together?
All I need is a little skateboard lumber to make me some gauges!!
Would putting these in some sort of oven help to make your process easier to remove the top layer by softening the adhesive ?
You've really gotten your procedures down, man. This is working.
I hope to see these slaps of lumber for sell in the future
Great idea love your shop.
I'm surprised the heat gun not made outta broken boards 🤙👌

I really really like your channel.
Bro you get a like just for all that prep work, DAMN!
Dude.. you have a dream job! Success!!! Greetings from Brasil!!!
Really cool...Rainbow wood:)
What about some sort of diy oven/kiln with racks inside to heat up the grip tape. You could cut out the heat gun entirely and do them all at once
I feel like those blanks would make awesome stair treads that im sure Ben Uyeda could use at his container house. Or maybe floating shelves.

Gorgeous work!
You should make a cool pallet out the skateboards for an interior design piece
would make a nice kids bed with those colours, tell them it's made from a rainbow tree.
Maybe throw some glitter in with the epoxy next time so the coloured bits also sparkle.
Those would make some neat looking guitar blanks!
It's like Damascus for lumber.
This is seriously rad, man. Good stuff.

That is beautiful wood!! LOVE IT!
That's pretty wood. Love it.
i think u should make a skateboard bandsaw box definetly! (everyone like if you agree so he will see this comment!
Ben, I think you need to get yourself an oven that can hold a stack of boards.
Love the grind mate!
No pun intended lol
Good to see someone doing something they are passionate about 🤙🏾
Thank you!
Awesome idea.
How come your nephew's growth chart is still in your shop and not on their wall?
Thanks for the great video. Again.
well done; makes me think of a jawbreaker with all the different colors.
Between the labor and the epoxy, the production costs of this lumber easily exceeds its value by 100x or more.
Sometimes you got to let the pros do what they do best, and you do great work with those boards. Out of line maybe but do you by chance sell lumber like this?
Hey... What about of doing a skate board out of skate boards... But now with total boat?!? 😁 Maybe it works!
When’s the quarter pipe coming?
I'm looking at that finished lumber and thinking "guitar body blanks". I hate to think how long it would take me to collect enough broken skateboards in the UK though!
U should have made a chopping board . With that design . God know how crazy it would look .. , looking forward to that 🤘🤘🤣🤣
Those would make some killer floating shelves
This was very impressive to watch
this is amazing!!!! Now I wanna make this as well! But I have ZERO material for this. Also, what kind of projects can this be applyed to? Because I can garantee the final product is really strong!
for a moment I thought it was rainbow eucalyptus tree wood, but this is really cool too!
Super curious what would happen if you made a 5-skateboard test piece without removing the grip tape
put the boards into a oven so the glue on the grip tape is soft and you can get it off way easier?
Ok what are those forms you put under and on top of the decks when you pressed them made of?
