You guys have honestly saved me again!!! I was using the ‘original’ sram video to work out how to pair the components and it wasn’t straight forward and the made it confusing! You guys say the rear is the master and link everything to it. EASY AS!!! You guys make everything so easy and simple to understand :D
For anyone struggling to 'dial in' SRAM E-TAP a few helpful hints I've learnt: (1) The set up for Mid cage varies slightly to short cage rear derailleur. (2) B tension is critical to both mid and short cage rear derailleur (3) for each position of the rear derailleur on the rear cassette 'micro shift' is available. Unlike a barrel adjustment on a mechanical system you can fine tune per cog. (4) The position of the front derailleur is crucial too high and it will over shift regardless of correctly setting the stops.
I doubt I'll get an answer but I'll describe my issue anyways: I'm trying to index my rear derailleur. The shift from smallest to second smallest cog rattles and take a few spins to shift. OK so I need to index that cog inboard. When I do the adjustment at gear 10 (from largest cog) gears 3-5 start catching on their bigger cogs. OK so I adjust outboard on those cogs so it doesn't rub and catch. However, when I do that the the issue with shifting from gear 11 -> 10 becomes choppy again. If your third point is true then how could behavior be possible? Even if my RD hanger was really crooked and something was wrong with the cassette the adjustments at gears 3-5 shouldn't have any effect if what you've said is true
hahaha Si you and your trembling hands- cracking me up. Your eTap is well deserved sir - thanks for your help in brining the world the quality show that is GCN.
I know I'm never probably going to be able to justify the cost of a wireless groupset like this, but I like how slick this setup is! I imagine in years time it will trickle down (or that's the hope) to more affordable groupsets that won't make me feel like a poser.
Front mech tip: On my bike the smallest wedge was just a bit too small but the medium wedge was way too big and would not fit. Cutting off the end of a zip tie made for the perfect shim for the smallest wedge! Fits better now and the front mech has much less flex.
the one in the front and back is because the derailur pivots more on rear then the front part. it is a nice idea to build in the 1-2mm gap most come with a sticker. I just use a penny or some other coin
so- the mechanic from Sram is in a video talking about how to set up eTap and then GCN does one? Thats not copying schedules, thats following news, developments and updates, and keeping their viewing public swiftly and reliably informed and educated about the latest things in the media or on the market, in their own informative, enjoyable and funny way- its kind of what they do....
Please show how to adjust etap front derailleur to stop it from throwing chain off the large chainring when shifting from small to large chainring. It seems to be super touchy to setup, and I cannot get it right. I've got > 500 miles on bike, and still throw the chain once on nearly every ride, after lots of adjustments. Thanks.
It is very important to put the rear mech in a mid gear before attaching it otherwise you will scratch it, which i can see in this video you have done!!!
I add an extension to my rear drop and now have an 11-40 rear cassette and 50/34 front chain rings on a road bike. Shifting is fine with this set up and I can manage the steep hills on my local rides. Will the Sram Red e-tap with a medium cage function on this same adaptation?
+TheAegisClaw Couldn't agree more. If you're listening out there Sram, Shimano, Campag, I'm saving up for a wireless, hydraulic disc brake groupset and I bet I'm not the only one...
Having real trouble fitting the Wifli version. Had a long cage ultegra mechanical previously, which needed an extension to the derailleur hanger, this moves the etap rear mech too far away making it impossible to set the limits as it can’t get to the big cog. If I fit it without the extension the pulley wheel touches the cassette even with the B screw set to max! Help!
Hi Simon, I bought an eTap group after watching this video. Everything is brand new. I installed everything on me bike, it was cool at first. Until when I was about to tune those gears. I cant seem to find a solution to shift the RD from 11cog ---> 12cog. The RD moves and chain just doesnt catch the 12th cog. I needed to shift twice so the chain would go to the next cog (13) and the rest of the gears works just fine. Even when I shift down back to the 11th cog. I tried the micro adjust, it does solve the 11--->12 cog issue, BUT another SIMILAR problem occurs on 15th cog ---> 14th cog. It cant shift down. So its either one of the gears wont work. I cant solve both. Been trying with it for days and i am lost. Can you by any chance advise me? Thanks! JL
can you please advise me? I mounted the Red eTap according to instructions in the Sram manual, H limit, L limit, B-screw. Chain length also exactly according instructions, but when I switch to the smallest cassette cog and smallest chain ring, I have a chain completely free at top also at the bottom side. My setup is 11-28 cassette and compact 50/34 chain ring. what could I do with it to make it ok? Thanks a lot.
Can you use Shimano Ultegra Cranks and Cassette with the eTap system? I want to keep my Shimano parts due to the Stages Powermeter I have and a new cassette I have not opened yet.
I have this set-up with an all-Shimano 11-speed drive train (crank, cassette, chain). No issues. I was also able to use some Dura-ace 7800 brake calipers, which seem to match the SRAM pull quite well.
+Simon Rano Actually its under 6 KG, 13.00 pounds with pedals and computer. Its got Enve 45 classic tubulars with 240 hubs, they are 1120 grams, Enve stem, bars and seatpost, Sella Italia SLR seat and naturally the newest Cannondale 2 crank- Enve now making carbon hubs which would cut another 100 grams but they're not cheap, 1350.00 a set not including labor
jim dandy That's a dream set you have ! up I got 3 cannondales (six, caad and caadX) all together they don't worth your equipment. By the way I downgraded the caad to 10 speed shimano for cross compatibility between my three bikes and differents wheelsets. I dream of Vision metron wheels but they don't come cheap neither. Is you supersix still on external routing ? I would choose external mechanical all the way for easy maintenance
I reckon in about 10 years from now the pro peleton wont even need to change gears as each rider's statistics, eg power and cadence etc will be monitored in real time and either a team manager or even an automated system will send a signal to the bikes and auto change gear so that the most suitable one is being used. This could go even furrther if the rout and terrain is known so that gear adjustments coulod be made a second or two beforehand. just my thoughts, but then again who suspected that sram would bring this out back in 2006?
I watched the tutorial setup video from Sram, and this one from you guys is much easier to follow. Thanks, GCN! I don't own Etap YET, but I wanted to see how someone would go about installing it. I'm interested in owning it though.
As far as I remember he was riding a red Tarmac and also a Scott. I think tarmac's frame had a crack. All these bikes belongs to him but some features in videos for a purpose. He used to be paid to ride bikes know he is paid to show them and that's great. The Canyon is so sexy !!!
***** That's not too bad, i was expecting like 200km xD still a massive rip off for what advantage? I doubt they weigh any less, probably more with the weight of the battery and electric components instead of cables?
+Aaron Chamberlain I was being sarcastic. Although it could be done. A hydraulic pump connected to your wheel, a reservoir, electromagnetic valves, disc-brakes pistons and calliper, few hoses and you're done!
If you see the man 🚴 in this video - please contact your local police station - he is said to be in the Bath/Bristol area and is totally safe to approach 😂
Somehow I do dig the new system. I never thought that I would like some electrical stuff on my bike... however I somehow dont like the new crank design ...
I managed to get my eTap to not work straight out of the box. Paired everything up (numerous times), everything rapidly blinks green going through the pairing process.....front and rear doesn't shift at all. I can press the function buttons and "manually" shift both derailleurs in either direction, but no dice with the shifters. I'm thinking that pressing a function button to shift while I'm riding is slightly more inconvenient than say, mechanical shifting.....as is waiting at least another week to get a replacement, when I already waited a week and a half to get this. Now I remember why I went back to Shimano 2 years ago.....SRAM still sucks.
Regarding the rear derailleur B-tension. I followed this video and it was way off. Then I followed SRAMs video which sets the B-tension with the chain on and it was perfect. Just in case anyone else has the same problem
Not convinced about any type of E setups. I run the regular Sram red double tap on my bike and it is responsive enough for me. I just couldn't trust battery operated components on a multi-day ride, plus that would make for one more thing to remove from the bike every time you stop. There are quite a few very efficient front wheel hub dynamo on the market these days, why don't parts company take advantage of this and come up with self sufficient components. With the price of some of those bikes, they should all come with basic setup like integrated front and rear lighting, speedo and gear shifters and derailleur that are self sustained. There would still be some room for maybe a few integrated usb ports to charge what ever could use charging.
+Damien I'm guessing it will because I think it will cost less to make mid to high end electronic components than it does to make mechanical versions. It may even happen faster than we all think now that Shimano has real pricing competition from SRAM.
You guys have honestly saved me again!!! I was using the ‘original’ sram video to work out how to pair the components and it wasn’t straight forward and the made it confusing! I've got to say this is better presented than the official how to video by SRAM which Bikeradar has posted today as well, nice job GCN

So helpful. Love GCN videos. Informative and explains everything without assuming certain knowledge.
And thats it for today on things we will *never* get to use in our lifetime. Back to you, Jim!
It costs less that dura ace di2 i think
But that is still quite expensive
I know I'm never probably going to be able to justify the cost of a wireless groupset like this, but I like how slick this setup is! I imagine in years time it will trickle down (or that's the hope) to more affordable groupsets that won't make me feel like a poser.
Very helpful, probably the best etap setup on here
Wow, a video everyone will need, just a common bike maintenance task!😂
So much better than that other channel..
Front mech tip: On my bike the smallest wedge was just a bit too small but the medium wedge was way too big and would not fit. Cutting off the end of a zip tie made for the perfect shim for the smallest wedge! Fits better now and the front mech has much less flex.
I love etap. My girlfriend said I was weird for falling in love with a groupset; but she just doesn't know...
i know I am kind of randomly asking but does anyone know a good place to watch newly released movies online ?
@Colt Paxton I use Flixzone. Just search on google for it =)
@Rocco Axton yup, I have been using Flixzone for since march myself =)
@Rocco Axton thanks, signed up and it seems like a nice service :) I really appreciate it !
@Colt Paxton You are welcome =)
Have Simon got rid of his gorgeous canyon!! I love that bike!
So. Are we competing against BikeRadar or they are spoiling your schedule? Still love GCN more.
+Manuel Massa Who?
+Global Cycling Network
I think he means bike radar uploaded a similar, "how to setup SRAM etap" video today :)
+Blair Kemp Choice is a good thing for people. That's what we say :)
GCN forever. FTW
+Global Cycling Network LMAO. I feel the same way about Dan Lloyd, Who the Boss?
Impossible to find this groupset in France, and the second market cost is as the market cost when it came out. Incredible!
Those lines on the front derailleur is so handy, why haven't I see this on any other front derailleurs?
the one in the front and back is because the derailur pivots more on rear then the front part. it is a nice idea to build in the 1-2mm gap most come with a sticker. I just use a penny or some other coin
Sram red and force FDs both have these
BikeRadar post the same tutorial today too, obivious ^^
+loucky flight Yeah but on this one, we actually understand what the guy is saying.
+ftheberge I thought the BR guys English was better :-)
+Mike Williams I disagree, I found Si's explanation well well easier to understand ✌
+loucky flight But GCN's is way better!
+loucky flight also Si posted a video of Rear derailleur crawling on the bench on Friday or Saturday.
I'm actually in love with it
so- the mechanic from Sram is in a video talking about how to set up eTap and then GCN does one? Thats not copying schedules, thats following news, developments and updates, and keeping their viewing public swiftly and reliably informed and educated about the latest things in the media or on the market, in their own informative, enjoyable and funny way- its kind of what they do....
+toasty bear More likely that Simon just wanted to put the red eTap on is bike as soon as he possibly could. Good on him!
ahall3823 too right! and I'm sure I'm wrong, but isn't that a new bike anyway?
+toasty bear somebody finally understands! Yes! The date was also likely set by SRAM to release the video anyway.
+ahall3823 more likely some people know social media and its power 2016 sending out some deliverys to big cycling channels..
koDiacc good point!! although it would be a big coincidence that they released videos within hours!
thanks Si, very well explained, much better than the oficial website.
Thanks.
Wireles? How often do you need to charge those things?
So the rear derailleur is the master? So that means I can't just use an etap front derailleur and shifter with mechanical rear shifter and mech?
GCN, please test carbon rim brake pads!
Any news on what Shimano is doing? 3 year product cycle now up on the 9000 di2.
Link to the chain video? Good stuff Si!
Only one can get this excited about wireless groupset.
Although, I'll admit, a crawling rear derailleur is pretty cool
Do you need the front derailleur wedge if you are using a clamp-on instead of a braze-on?
This should've gone on the Canyon!
better video, than the instructions provided by sram
Can you do tips on riding a mountain bike on a road
It is very important to put the rear mech in a mid gear before attaching it otherwise you will scratch it, which i can see in this video you have done!!!
Hi GCN. When the battery runs out do you have to pair them again
+Robby White good question
+Robby White I'm pretty sure they have a memory built in.. at least the RD and FD...shifters maybe not
also is Si trying to steal Matts crown as the mullet king of GCN???
You can finally give Tom his bike back
My guess is that we will NOT see Si at work tomorrow. He will be riding his bike without bar tape and with his phone turned off.
Well, I would...
i'm a little surprised you didn't fit these to your tricked out awesome Canyon aeroad with the zipp wheels???
Si. What Allen key set you got. Liking the different colours. We're can I buy from. Etap is the way forward. Great vid
I add an extension to my rear drop and now have an 11-40 rear cassette and 50/34 front chain rings on a road bike. Shifting is fine with this set up and I can manage the steep hills on my local rides. Will the Sram Red e-tap with a medium cage function on this same adaptation?
A beautiful system, indeed...
Another great video! Maybe on my next bike! But Si how do you break??
How is this groupset installation comparable to Di2? I will be purchasing a bike with it and I am pleasantly surprised as to how simple the set up is.
What do you do with the cable ports on the frame after you go wireless?
it would be nice to know how to connect brake tubes my brakes are locked up solid
So jealous! I need this in my life!
question is where to buy? I want it tomorrow
Im am saving for this groupset and will hopefully race it next year. Does anyone know who makes those allen keys?
Si -- It looked like to taped completely over the blip. How does it work?
@GCN At which price is the groupset retailing? And when can we get it on the open market?
Anyone agree with me?
Put the levers on after setting the RD's H/L screws may save you from walking back on forth.
I'm just curious as too who would be putting an eTap wireless shifting on their bike without knowing how to get the proper length chain...
Dumb rich folks, trust me they are out there
+Drew Hayden Doctors or Lawyers that decide they want to take up cycling as a hobby and can afford all the expensive stuff.
+Drew Hayden Doctors or Lawyers that decide they want to take up cycling as a hobby and can afford all the expensive stuff.
+RC31800 fair enough, but proper length chain is still a pretty simple one...
+123456bmx SURE BUT THOSE DUMB RICH FOLKS ALLOW THE REST OF US TO GET THESE PARTS JUST A FEW YEARS DOWN THE TRACK FOR REASONABLE PRICES.
Simon, I dig the Ridley, but don't you think this groupset was Canyon Aeroad worthy? Anyhow, great video!
What brand are those nifty color coded allen keys you're using Si?
Asking the same question. PB Swiss or Wera, they the only sets I seen in rainbow colours.
+nightfly222 They are indeed the PB Swiss ones.
how many bikes do you have Simon Richardson ?
Wouldn't mind having that setup...
So is there a disc brake specific setup for it or are you limited to cables for the shifters?
Mechanical discs only, they are working on a hydraulic version but they won't tell you if you ask.
+123456bmx thanks, gives me a bit longer to save up then. Never using rim brakes again!
+TheAegisClaw Couldn't agree more. If you're listening out there Sram, Shimano, Campag, I'm saving up for a wireless, hydraulic disc brake groupset and I bet I'm not the only one...

Nice, where to buy???
can you please advise me? I mounted the Red eTap according to instructions in the Sram manual, H limit, L limit, B-screw. Can you use Shimano Ultegra Cranks and Cassette with the eTap system? I want to keep my Shimano parts due to the Stages Powermeter I have and a new cassette I have not opened yet.
you can but it wouldn't match. the shifting performance is probably fine but Sram recommends using their chainrings with their groupsets.
I have this set-up with an all-Shimano 11-speed drive train (crank, cassette, chain). No issues. I was also able to use some Dura-ace 7800 brake calipers, which seem to match the SRAM pull quite well.
It's the way to go.
So how much is this actually going to cost? rrp is £2000 but hopefully it'll be less if it wants to compete with di2?
Cool, what is the weight savings compared SRAM Red mechanical?, I have an Evo-Hi Mod with Red , must save something considering no cables, etc
+jim dandy you already got the lightest groupset with one of the lightest frame. Your bike might be under 6.8 even with alloy wheels ;)
+jim dandy Hi Jim, there is an extra 100g or so with the eTap over Red mechanical.
+Global Cycling Network Ok, thanks for the information
+Simon Rano Actually its under 6 KG, 13.00 pounds with pedals and computer. Its got Enve 45 classic tubulars with 240 hubs, they are 1120 grams, Enve stem, bars and seatpost, Sella Italia SLR seat and naturally the newest Cannondale 2 crank- Enve now making carbon hubs which would cut another 100 grams but they're not cheap, 1350.00 a set not including labor
jim dandy
That's a dream set you have ! up I got 3 cannondales (six, caad and caadX) all together they don't worth your equipment. By the way I downgraded the caad to 10 speed shimano for cross compatibility between my three bikes and differents wheelsets. I dream of Vision metron wheels but they don't come cheap neither. Is you supersix still on external routing ? I would choose external mechanical all the way for easy maintenance
Is it out for retail?
2017 they'll launch the wireless brakes.
ivovicentim is this true HAHAHAH?
if you google it, it is a thing since 2011, but it'll probably be realesed from SRAM for a cable free bike soon.
Wireless brakes? If batery will die how to stop the bike?
Ha ha !!
haha your face when you were test shifting on the table looked like my 6 old's when I have him a laptop for Xmas !! brilliant 😂😂
How much of a pain woild it be to install and remove blips on my redshift sports clip on aerbars?
+Patrick Arredon It wouldn't. Just make sure the wire is long enough by getting the longer version.
+Global Cycling Network Thank you for replying!
I reckon in about 10 years from now the pro peleton wont even need to change gears as each rider's statistics, eg power and cadence etc will be monitored in real time and either a team manager or even an automated system will send a signal to the bikes and auto change gear so that the most suitable one is being used. just my thoughts, but then again who suspected that sram would bring this out back in 2006?
Si scoffs at UCI ruling on disk brakes and says 'Brakes? I've got SRAM E-Tap!'
I'm so jelly right now :-)
I watched the tutorial setup video from Sram, and this one from you guys is much easier to follow. Thanks, GCN! I don't own Etap YET, but I wanted to see how someone would go about installing it. I'm interested in owning it though.
I've already been subscribed. But I much rather click on you to subscribe than a box that is hyperlinked between two other hyperlinked bigger boxes.
Next Video "How to convince your wife/partner that you need to remorgage to buy the eTap groupset"
1:27 pure joy lol
New bike? I would have put it on he Canyon Aeroad myself
lmao right
the Canyon is a sponsor bike.
+Henry Hernandez It's a brand new Ridley with uncut steering tube, so is this one too
I thought it was his personal bike?
As far as I remember he was riding a red Tarmac and also a Scott. I think tarmac's frame had a crack. All these bikes belongs to him but some features in videos for a purpose. He used to be paid to ride bikes know he is paid to show them and that's great. The Canyon is so sexy !!!
I can see rear derailleur racing on the workbench. If you get more than one set
+Danny Best I need more power...
You should do a rear derailleur race 😂
The cover photo looks like Simon is on a date with the SRAM
What's the battery life like?
+21st Century It also depends on the amount of hills you ride.
***** That's not too bad, i was expecting like 200km xD still a massive rip off for what advantage? I doubt they weigh any less, probably more with the weight of the battery and electric components instead of cables?
Ethan S True
why is the Same instruction on bike radar just two hours earlier?
great video!
Awesome video - just need 2k for the groupset then I am ready!
Waiting for the wireless shifting&brakes groupset, then I'm investing...
+Dejan Vrbnjak That'll probably be a while honestly.... as a failure to shift doesn't mean much, but a failure in brakes means death.
+Aaron Chamberlain I was being sarcastic. Although it could be done. A hydraulic pump connected to your wheel, a reservoir, electromagnetic valves, disc-brakes pistons and calliper, few hoses and you're done!
Great Video
Si is more enthusiastic than Matt when he interviewed "Bertie".
If you see the man 🚴 in this video - please contact your local police station - he is said to be in the Bath/Bristol area and is totally safe to approach 😂
GCN v's Bikeradar on eTap installation videos. I think Simon wins
+Paul Liptrott There's room for both videos, and more Paul, but we're pleased you like ours.
+Global Cycling Network Yeah it's not a competition but somebody has to win
+Global Cycling Network , it was "SRAM's European Road PR Technical Coordinator" too
nice bike, Si...
How much for this groupset?
Somehow I do dig the new system. I never thought that I would like some electrical stuff on my bike... however I somehow dont like the new crank design ...
OMG I so want a set.
I've heard a rumor that Si can spin enough watts to recharge these eTaps while riding. 😉
Nice bike btw :)

I've set my Di2 to shift as the etab. Front buttons for the front shifting, the back buttons for rear shifting. #gcnhack
i hope in 10 years time this tecnology will aproach my pricetag budget.until then just watch this video.
+BisdremisKostas lol I feel ya. One day it will be come main stream like indexed shiting is now. At least I hope
+Damien I'm guessing it will because I think it will cost less to make mid to high end electronic components than it does to make mechanical versions. It may even happen faster than we all think now that Shimano has real pricing competition from SRAM.
where have you been all my life..?
