Are hanging leg raises safe? Well, the answer is “it depends”… so let’s talk about it. . Shout out @venkat_guam_fitness for the opening stitched video & @muscleandmotion for the amazing anatomy graphics.
Completely agree! I'm a 53 yr old female and had a c section 24 yrs ago. Plus 3 other pregnancies which led to my pelvic floor weakening, muscle separation, etc. I would be able to do this without waking up in a whole lot of pain next day. I feel like this gentleman acquired his physique with other exercises and demonstrated this for the video.
Not necessarily. Some people have a BETTER TIME training abs this way. I dont have any spine issues so habging taises are great for me because they also biuild core stability.@marianak742

I sometimes got low back pain from hanging leg raises but I looked at anatomy and have used what seems like a superior version since: laying leg raises by only rotating hips back and forth on the bed while locking hip flexors to keep legs "locked" and not moving them with anything except hips. Combined with the new research about superior hypertrophy for several muscles in exercises where the tension is highest in stretched positions for the muscle, the laying leg raise using just the hips utilizes that too. Highest tension is while legs are parallel to the "ground" and the abs are stretched. The rectus abdominis connects from the ribs to the front of the hips. A lot of tutorials show hanging/laying leg raises with the movement coming from the hip flexors while the abs STABILIZE the movement. While useful, it's not how other muscles are trained for hypertrophy, my version constricts the abs for the concentric and eccentric. My spine is happy, my abs are screaming and my hip flexors aren't even sore the next day since I just lock them.
For me being an older person this decompresses my spine I don't do squats anymore how do leg raises and from the hanging position from a pull-up bar or flat on the ground on my back repetitiveness of sit-ups for myself is straining of the back pay attention to your body people and just do what's right what feels good don't worry about what everybody else is doing work and do what's good for yourself you got to start somewhere I'm not looking for working out from a egotistical standpoint home and working on self you do get results but you got to keep you moving
I used to work with a short guy who was in his late sixties and he used to do these exercises at work. I was 22 and athletic and had a fighters level of endurance and that guy in his sixties strength and endurance was very impressive to me. He was a really nice guy I hope he is well. 🙏

Hanging leg raises are mostly *hip* flexion, which none of the "six pack" muscles perform. If your spine isn't flexing (back rounding), then your abdominal musculature is not significantly loaded. As with all other muscle groups and all other activities, only *one* properly performed set of each activity is necessary.

I preffer contract the abs with the straight legs hanging, like in a hollow body
