I’m not too sad about the friend of Hitler… or the other one who was romantically involved with him.

@@adam_p99don’t be too quick to judge people from back then, it’s too comfortable for you in your nice, peaceful modern town. If you think you wouldn’t have been swept up in all this back then you’re kidding yourself

@@perceptoshmegington3371 I’m a big believer of not judging people of the past based on today’s standards. But to assume I would be a Nazi sympathiser or fascist is utterly ridiculous.

@@adam_p99 you can’t say what you would do then, as you are now. That is my entire point. You’re a product of your environment. Maybe you wouldn’t, maybe you would. You literally cannot say.

Very little of what made Jessica Mitford such a fascinating woman comes through here. She was a fabulous writer (if you doubt me, read 'Hons and Rebels') and a famed wit amongst her circle with a particularly fine line in what we now call 'gallows humour'. She wasn't someone who took herself too seriously, but she was serious in her views and beliefs. An admirable woman!

Its interesting to see how until recently intelligent people were able to critically examine political ideologies without screeching and assigning ill intent everywhere. Politics is complex and we see now the dangers of reducing every ideas to right/left good/bad etc….populism is the death of democracy in slow motion

As a Non-Briton (I am german) I am always intrigued how different members of the same upper class family sound - each one has its own accent.

It’s because it’s totally affected, a fakery. They’re free to assume whatever variation they wish. They just can’t have a regional accent or they would sound “common”.

THANKS for this! To anyone in the comment section, I noticed there's three audiobooks on Audible about the Mitford girls including the "Wait for Me" which I believe was a biography on the youngest girl - the Devonshire one - does anyone have any recommendations which book is best?

I believe that there is a collection of her letters to Evelyn Waugh and another one of diary entries.
