In Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions, Solid Snake decides to take a break from saving the world from nuclear annihiliation and pursue his true dream - becoming the greatest power gamer of all time.
This run took four months to make, beginning in mid-April and ending on August 3rd, 2017. The aim was to improve the times (and scores in the 1 min Battle maps) as much as possible, while also producing a run that took advantage of SRAM to skip completing the Practice Mode missions, which are not only boring but repetitive, since most of them are identical to their Time Attack counterparts and slow down the pace of the TAS considerably.
After many months of hard work, it's finally finished! Thank you to everyone who watched the WIPs and left feedback, both on the RUclips comments and the Metal Gear Speedrunner Discord channel. I love you all.

@@LyingSecret He codes in every last detail of the run. But I'd say he proved to himself that he can do anything he sets him mind to and do it with greatness, just needs to apply it to areas that make him money.
@@SavingPrivateBob TAS is rarely about making money, it's just about proving what is mechanically possible. Trust me I know how a TAS works, it's just dumb that people who have no idea what a TAS even is, will accuse people of doing it as having 'cheated' at anything.

This is both 1 of the craziest and entertaining speedruns I've ever watched. That snap aiming was an absolute treat to witness. I've also never considered restarting those mystery levels to manipulate the RNG. Clever tactic.
Could you please explain how you mean this? Why does restarting a mistery level manipulate the RNG?

I theorize that when the level loads up it has 1 of many pre-programmed combinations of actions or set paths for the A.I. to follow. If you can recognize these patterns and realize 1 does not work in your favor or would add too much time to waste than it would be easier to just restart, and go again rather than try and go through it

damn i played this as a kid but never got really far. Very cool to see all the levels now! i'm absolutely gobsmacked how many there are! Makes me want to play the game again

Ryan Norman it manipulates the guard positions so the guilty guard on certain maps will always be in the optimal position.

kinda wonder if it'd be possible to stuff this video into an AI processor then get the AI to "play" the game based on inputs happening from the video, and maybe somehow improve on your time? that'd be interesting~
You *could* write a script to just play the game exactly the same way every time, but that's not really an AI. You *maybe* could teach an AI to play the game, but I'm not really sure you could teach an AI to find a more optimized route. Who knows, maybe someday though, or maybe today and I'm just wrong.
Are some of these USA-exclusive?
I didn't see a lot of them, when I played the Europe version
I don't have the numbers in front of me, but you're right. The Special Missions European release has fewer missions than the VR Missions US release, which is the same as the extra VR disc from the Japanese release of MGS Integral.

Only thing I didn't understand was why did you manually equip/unequip the gun for reloading instead of doing the quick equip/unequip with R1? Is it virtually the same speed with TAS and you were just showing off or is there something to it?

How hard it is to make such a run? Also, how do you exactly aim so precisely and accurately at targets? Are you just doing it normally in game and repeat it many times until you get a perfect shot, cut the movement instructions and arrange them with others to create a perfect run through the stage or how does that work?

Puzzle missions were so outdated and unfun. Like the one at 1:17:50 . That took me like an hour

"TAS" stands for tool assisted speedrun. He can use software to manipulate his inputs to do things frame perfect or like in this example, pefectly double tap the hell out of them.

@@GmanGer the beauty of TASing is that everything done in this video is still *technically* possible by a human player, even if the chances of a human pulling it off are virtually zero. Because it’s all based on a sequence of optimized inputs played back in real time, it’s pushing the game to its limits, not changing the game in any way.

Seems like it’s a part where they built in some kind of “haha” moment where you don’t have to do anything, just wait until the guards wakes up after minutes and the bottle underneath him reveals automatically. But I am only guessing, I don’t know.

Still trying to figure out how to pull of "snap aiming". Tremendous work.
Bad Humans Unfortunately snap aiming is a TAS only trick since it requires three (sometimes four depending on the turn) frame-perfect analog inputs in a row. That being said I'm really happy to see another runner doing VR level runs.
That's a relief, because replicating some of these shots on the dualshock3 (and definitely the 4) are nearly impossible. Thanks for the reply. Hopefully I get to see you on Ghost Babel, which has been getting some love from the speed running community.

I thought in mgs2 you could run and shoot and in mgs1 it was impossible 🤔
Don't know if you've discovered this, or even care still, but you can run while aiming by holding aim/fire (square), and then holding crouch (x). Then, you can press and release the fire button as needed to shoot, and as long as you're still holding x you can move. Assuming I remember my button combos correctly.
(It's basically only useful in vr missions and possibly speedruns though).

You’re right. It’s also extremely awkward and MGS2 made running and shooting much easier.
It was in the manual that came with MGS1, listed under controls.

Mayor MC Cheese As this is a tool-assisted speedrun, technically this does not count as a world record. It does, however, act as a good measuring stick to make sure people submitting individual level times to the speedrun.com leaderboards aren’t cheating, since we now know what the hypothetical best time/score is for each map.

MGS1 VR subtracts from your final time based on your leftover ammunition, in order to encourage accuracy. On some maps, if you’re fast and accurate enough, this can lead to a time of 0.00

@@marklee2063 This was not performed in real-time. It is a tool-assisted speedrun. There is, however, a very dedicated time attack community for MGS1VR on speedrun.com (note that some of the times in this TAS have been beaten due to the discovery of new glitches).
