My car has an electronic parking brake. All i do is down shift to lower gears til i come to a complete stop. But if you drive automatic you should attempt to downshift also. Or if you follow this advice put your car in neutral first.
Also tap the brakes as many times as you can usually brake failure is due to a leak in a brake line and sometimes you can get some fluid past it to get help from the actual brakes as you apply the handbrake
People forget about the magical ability of downshifting. Using engine braking can cut massive braking distance.
