While I absolutely stand by what I said about rampancy, the number of dissenting comments suggests I didn’t expand on the topic enough.
Rampancy was effectively an AI “evolving” into sentience/personhood, and this involved the AI rapidly expanding along divergent paths and spreading across their network (hence, “becoming rampant”). The AI would continue their expansion even in the absence of enough space within a network to store them, resulting in their “thinking themselves to death.”
All the Bungie-era EU novels describe the process completely in line with Marathon’s, their only addition being the seven-year timeframe before its onset.

Out of curiosity will you be doing Halo 3's storyboards as well? I don't know if they're fully available or what your process is, but this series has been insanely fun to watch. I heard that the cut Halo 3 mission "Forerunner City" was also supposed to reveal that humans were forerunners, but it was cut for time. I also wonder if the mission Data Hive from ODST is named that not only because of the Superintendent and drone hives, but also as a reference to the cut data vault.

@@gabethebabe3337 I’m still debating it. All of Lee Wilson’s pieces for Halo 3 were effectively “lighting tests,” and not actually storyboards - and everything he released pretty closely mirrors what we already received in the finished game.
Basically, putting it all together would be a ~10 minute video effectively recreating scenes that are already in Halo 3.

Its so bad when you think further about it. Why is humanity as a whole able to access Forerunner tech if they were supposed to be a technologically peer hostile race? Isn't the whole Contact Harvest scene now retroactively mistaken, with the Prophets being justified for declaring war on humanity for the wrong reasons - instead of humanity disproving their religion, they instead validate the war by being the ancient enemies of their gods - and thus the wacky trio simply got their casus belli wrong?
And worst of all is that the retcon could have worked - I read and actually kinda liked Cryptum - but Halo 4 kinda killed that.

    • @thecynicaloptimist1884
      @thecynicaloptimist1884 5 месяцев назад +59

That and making the humans and Forerunners separate species entirely nullifies the whole reason the Covenant waged war to begin with. The whole reason they waged war is because humans essentially read as living Forerunners on their scanners, negating the key point of the Covenant faith that all the Forerunners - the "worthy" - ascended to godhood when the Halos were fired. That some Forerunners remained meant that somehow the Forerunners themselves were not worthy, and thus were not gods.
If humans are just another species that some of the Forerunners "chose" to inherit all their technology, then why did the Covenant ever wage war with them? In 343's lore, that means the Covenant waged war over a misunderstanding of a misunderstanding.

    • @aWraithsSoul
      @aWraithsSoul 4 месяца назад +45

@@thecynicaloptimist1884 It was never "just" a misunderstanding; it was always a targeted conspiracy, Truth, Regret, and Mercy deliberately take control of the Covenant in the first place because they know this revelation would tear the Covenant apart. It was easier to manipulate the entire Covenant based on their religion than reconcile with the fact that their entire faith (down to the "we fire Halo to become Gods") had always been a lie.

Because Mercy was fully aware that Humanity were forerunners, and were "Left Behind" after the firing of the rings. He was there after all, when Mendicant Bias awoke within the Keyship in the centre of High Charity and spoke about the age old mistranslation that had been the foundation of the Covenant Religion. The Halo community seems to have largely decided that the Hierarchs all have hypocritical names, so addressing Mercy’s final words as an ultimate display of mercy would be difficult for many to accept.

I think the worst part of all of this is that in 2007, I was eight. Sure I played Halo all the time but I only had a surface-level understanding of the lore and greater picture. I knew there was something BIG going on behind the scenes because playing the Bungie trilogy is a whole lot like seeing the shape of something massive underneath the water. Someone a long time ago on a video I don't remember said that "Bungie writes three pages of lore for everything but only lets us read one." and even as a kid I could tell.
By the time I actually started trying to figure out what the bigger picture was, by the time I started going through the wiki page-by-page and piecing the lore together for myself, Halo 4 was already out, as was the Reclaimer Saga, which means for the entire time I've been an obsessive Halo fan, since I was a pre-teen, I've only known the retcon. Let me say that again; my engagement with the Halo lore for most of my life has been post-retcon. The wiki pages I read, the headcanons I made, the characters I fell in love with, all of it was changed while I wasn't looking and replaced with ONE DUDE'S fanfiction and because I didn't know any better I just accepted it as truth. I spent my whole life confused about why the lore didn't match up with the original trilogy and only now do I know that there's an entire story for the original games that's just...gone.
But it's okay. There is a definitive line between where Halo stops and the fanfiction begins. Everything from the original trilogy and the books written under Bungie still follow the Old Canon, literally the only thing from Frank O'Connor that made an appearance in the trilogy are a handful of terminal entries. I can still learn the real story, what Bungie intended before everything got fucked up. But I think it all caps off not even at the ending, but on the short journey to the control room, the same reconstructed control room, on a reconstruction of the very same ring you started this franchise on, and when that haunting looming choir fades in as the blizzard clears... You can just... You can *FEEL* that this is the culmination of a 100,000's years of history coming to an end, that every being that has ever lived in Halo's milky way is holding it's breath watching this moment, that your ancestors (the Forerunners) are watching, ready to see the ultimate judgement of their sacrifice, and Mendicant Bias's unseen final act of atonement.

So regarding Frank somehow thinking that humanity and the Covenant came to a truce, I think I have a better explanation: he has no clue that the great schism happened, he probably saw a bit of gameplay footage where elites were fighting alongside humans (probably during Floodgate or even when Arby picks us up during Cortana), and thought that because Elites were friendly that the entire Covenant was. He has literally no clue that the elites were completely betrayed which is why in Halo 4 we went right back to fighting elites.

“LINEAGE CONFIRMED” And we’re still arguing over whether we were forerunners in the Bungie games?

    • @iivin4233
      @iivin4233 Месяц назад +3

"Descended" from Forerunners and "are Forerunners" would still be two different things. I had most of this story down already, but I had always thought humans were literally Forerunners. I think that is the more satisfying interpretation. The alternative leaves linguistic holes such as that "created by" and "are" are two different things. The idea that Halo is science fiction rather than science fantasy never crossed my mind because Halo is only slightly less fantasy than Star Trek, which is only slightly less fantasy than Star Wars.
I think the presence of bullets fools people.
So, "Reclaimer" is one of the few words of Bungie's humans are forerunners confirmation that makes more sense if humans were made by the forerunners rather than being forerunners. But, that is tantamount to saying humans are not forerunners. It would be like gathering in the lawyer's office after your mom died and the lawyer saying, "I'm not here to divide your inheritance. That is up to the executor of your mother's will. Here she is." as he points to your mother. That would be a bizarre mistake to make. Why would Guilty Spark confuse you for someone he knows is dead, from a species that is probably dead? He should know the will of the forerunners--their reclamation plan--and should therefore know that we are forerunner creations and not forerunners themselves. Either that or he should be confused and incredulous. "What? The dead walk? Is this a Flood deception?"
On the other hand, if Guilty Spark confuses you for the Didact or for any forerunner, that would imply you're closer to them than genetically modified apes probably should be.
It's pretty unscientific to call two creatures identical when they have different DNA. It's already a bit of an assumption that the forerunners bio-cyber-logical anatomy would even use DNA. Meanwhile, it is both scientifically true and required by the plot of Halo that humanity experienced natural genetic change on Earth for over 100,000 years but did not change into a different species.
If human beings did remain the same species for 100,000 years then forerunners refugees could have remained the same species for 100,000.
The real problem for my interpretation is our archaeological record which shows we evolved on Earth. Admittedly I didn't think of this until just now, but that is not actually a problem unless we assume forerunners evolved elsewhere and moved to Earth. Doesn't it make more sense that if they evolved on Earth that their reclamation program would repopulate them on Earth? And doesn't it also make more sense that they would build an ark for Earth if Earth were there home planet?

Something I don't think can be stressed enough is that it was never a plan. Never something Bungie deliberated on. It was FACT. From even before the Halo universe as we knew it began to take shape.
"Unexpected contact with indigenous human populations on four "lost colony" worlds led to a frenzy of research as archaeologists, theologians, astronomers, and evolutionary biologists competed to offer an explanation for the startling discovery." -that's from the Cortana Letters. Before the first game's story was finalized. Before it even made the transition to Xbox. All the way back THEN, Bungie knew: Humanity had been to the stars before, and SOMETHING had happened to reset the slate. But, the evidence was still there. And it still existed.
Even IN Iris (which Frank O'Connor RAN), it's shown that the Forerunners were aware of Earth LONG before modern humanity emerged. There were human handprints in segments of limestone originating from 110 million years ago... the Cretaceous Period... when Primates are theorized to have first appeared. And the Forerunners possessed a map of Earth as it was when the supercontinent Pangaea existed. There was no mystery. They came FROM EARTH.
Literally the ONLY person who seemed to be in a back-and-forth about it was Frank O'Connor.

Anyhow, they kept being indirect about it, but this was what they kept teasing: I remember I think in First Strike one of the Spartans in Red Team captures a Wraith and is shocked that they intuitively know how to operate the equipment. A big deal is made of the way Covenant technology is imitative and derivative of Forerunner technology. Chief and Cortana hijack a Covenant cruiser and it takes little time for Cortana to go fucking S-tier on the jump drives and plasma weapons. Ghosts of Onyx is where the wheels start to fall off the bus, but it does the tease about Forerunner equipment knowing something like Latin. And hint at the possibilities that some Forerunners made it into the Shield Worlds' slipspace bubbles before the Halos fired.
There was this compelling mystique about the Forerunners because you knew things were building to a reveal, where you were either going to come face to face with a small group of surviving Forerunner, or a recording of the final minutes of the Forerunner civilization and get to see the full array fire, or both. There was always the question: what exactly _is_ humanity's relationship with the Forerunners? What was the Forerunner civilization like -- the genocidal and casual brutality of the Covenant would suggest narratively the Forerunners would be their opposite. And there was always the question about where the Flood came from. But it was clear that as of the end of Halo 2, for some reason the Halo array could be fired or disarmed from Earth.
It seemed like there was adventure and discovery and oh-shit moments waiting for us in the future.
But this was in the first half of the 2000s, when it seemed like there would be more of these integrated epic stories -- but almost twenty years on commercial studios have proven they can only start things, they can't bring them to satisfying conclusions. And then you start to see the trickle and then flood of retcons starting with Halo 3 as the story starts to fall apart. Interesting, though, that now that we've seen the storyboards it seems likely that the Librarian from the Terminals is derived from the progenitor Forerunner in the Ark's Data Vault. Halo 3's story sucked, honestly. You had the mechanical wrapping-up of the storyline but it just didn't pay off what Halo and Halo 2 set up.
I'm still disappointed over what could have been.

@@Jesse-qy6ur I have to strongly disagree with you about Halo 3. It was the epic conclusion that Halo deserved, and for that reason it remains my favorite to this day.
I don't think Halo really is a case of a studio not being able to finish what it started. Bungie set out to tell an epic story, and they did. There are a few plot threads that could have been closed off, but apart from the Flood there's enough evidence to put all that together.
The problem isn't that Halo wasn't concluded in a satisfying way. It's that, while I personally would have loved to have more Halo, it did get a satisfying conclusion, but it was picked up by an incompetent studio afterward.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. I was pretty much a games-only Halo fan with only a couple of books and tangential knowledge of the terminals etc by the time 343 took over, but I was so thoroughly confused and disgusted with Halo 4's story that I made a brief post on the Waypoint forums to vent about it.
I got swarmed by a bunch of 343 shills that used EVERY lie and excuse in this video and I went back and forth arguing with them about it and trying to research as much as I could because I could've sworn everything under Bungie implied Humans were basically Forerunners.
I'm grateful for the existence of this video and this channel because through this guy's content, we not only got THE most blatant confirmation to date in the form of the release of the original H2 storyboards, but he also showed me that the piece I was missing in my old arguments was that Frank O'Connor himself wrote the inconsistent parts of the H3 terminals that 343 shills said vindicated his later retcons.

I used to think I was a Halo fan, then I watched this.
I started playing Halo, each game in order of release, in about 2007 or something, and I was about six years old. Oddly enough, the first time I played a Halo game where I actually was old enough to start caring about the story beyond "Master Chief is cool and we kill aliens and Flood are space zombies" was around 2012, right when Halo 4 rolled around. Of course, I played it on Christmas that year and could immediately tell something wasn't right. It wasn't the Halo I knew for practically all of my short life so far.
In recent years, I learned a bit more about the original plan for Halo, but stopped at "Humans were supposed to be descended from Forerunners" and never bothered to look further, because I felt there was no reason to. After all, the current story is what we have, and I don't have a reason to think about original concepts for things that never panned out. I have played all of the original trilogy at least 20 times each since then, and just glossed over that aspect of the story altogether.
My perspective now, after seeing this, makes me unreasonably mad. I used to think Frank O'Connor shared the same vision as Bungie all along, and again, never looked into it. But to see how clearly opposed he was to everything the company was going for, and that I would have loved way more than what we have now, I can't help but feel betrayed in a way.
But hey, Frank O'Connor apparently just left 343 industries for good, so here's hoping that Halo Infinite's sequel/DLC/whatever they're planning ('cause who knows at this point) gets better. Infinite itself already took a step back to what we all love in the artstyle, so maybe they'll somehow fix the story in a similar way. Wishful thinking, maybe, but Halo is basically my whole conscious childhood and I would hate to see it die after all the torture it has been through already. It just has to be put back on course.

I'm still excited for the future and can accept that we're stuck with what we have now, and still have hope that they can, if not completely fix, just guide their story to a place that most fans would want to see it go, and now that O'Connor is gone, I think they're that next step closer to it.

Expand on the Flood, show what they are like on a galactic level rather than the smaller localised outbreaks that where in the Bungie trilogy.

1:04:28 In the first level of Halo 4, Master Chief says to Cortana, "I thought we had a truce with the Covenant." That line never made any sense to me from the very first time I played it in 2012. I remember thinking at the time, "What? When did that happen?" Now I know why that line was there. Frank O' Connor completely misunderstood Halo 3's story. And that's the guy who was put in charge to develop the Halo franchise.
That alone is very telling about 343's take on Halo as a whole.
Edit: Haha, you even addressed this absurd line later on in the video. Well done.

Yes, humanity had a tentative truce with the Covenant Separatists/Elites that were led by the Arbiter. They had no peace with the actual Covenant or other Covenant Separatists/Elites who weren't yet following the Arbiter. That nuance completely disappeared. Of course, that's assuming Ghosts of Onyx is even Canon anymore. The Covenant Separatists gather much of their fleets at Joyous Exultation in order to hit back at the Prophets, Brutes, and other Covenant Loyalists AND also finish off Humanity. The Separatists have no idea they were lied to. They just know they were betrayed. They still hate humanity. Their leader was a prominent Elite Admiral/Fleet Master. However, most of the fleet is destroyed by an UNSC Nova Bomb that was taken from Reach, disguised as a forerunner artefact.
So it's the Arbiter that convinces much of the Elites to not continue the war against humanity.

Right? Its soo dumb. I could understand if Chief said "I thought we had a truce with the Elites." That would have honestly made perfect sense, even if the Arbiter didn't yet rally all of the Elites. It would make sense that the Chief would think that.
But the Covenant? No lmao there was never a point in history where Humanity and the Covenant were friends.

Finally someone says it. I don't care about player counts, how broken it is, or how bad the gameplay is. Those can all be fixed in the next game if not through updates. What makes Halo special has always been the story and worldbuilding. It takes the best parts of not only sci fi, but religions, philosophy, poetry, and history. All delivered in a PARTY game because no matter how good books can be, it's damn near impossible to get your friends to read them, so you have nobody to share the experience with.

It was a mountain and I still applaud you for making the behemoth of a video. I left a comment somewhere in here a while ago but it was out of shock so there wasn't a point. I'm caught up on all the current lore and I enjoy it but I've gotta say that you've really changed my mind and opinion on alot of stuff. As much as I might like the newer stuff, it's never quite sat right with me how much has been retconed and changed. I'll stay entertained but it but I will always wonder what could have been. As a specific point, I enjoy the forerunner saga of books as entertaining but I know how damaging they were to the lore as a whole. Modern Halo lore is riddled with these retcon scars.
The Maginot Sphere, in the terminals often referred to "the line" seems to have been a line drawn by the Forerunners when the Flood infestation spiralled out of control. It also fits to the Maginot line being constructed specifically to stop Germany as the main defense line. The new lore now retcons it as some ancient, traditional literal line of forts. Which is laughable, since such a line could have easily been overcome by swarming it and not take 300 years.
With the terminals giving me the feeling that when they started to loose the war, they drew a line in the sand and declared everything behind it as unsavable. The terminals mention that outside of the Maginot Sphere panic and anger at the central government that abandoned them rulses supreme. It is refered to as "contested space". The Halo Array was built in that time as a desperate last ditch effort.
In new 343 lore, the Flood supposedly lingered around at the edges for almost 300 years, the Forerunners kept it somehow secret from the population, the Halos had been built thousands of years earlier, while the Flood hadn't shown up yet, but it had previously been seen so they just built a suicide machine. "Oh yeah, this infection thing the humans exterminated with their left hand while fighting us with their right hand... when they come back we'll just wipe the galaxy, i guess." Sounds about right. Supposedly, over 300 years of war, the Flood captured a handfull of worlds at the periphery and then just suddenly decided to get serious when Mendicant defected. BS.
It seems clear in OG lore, that the Flood had been overrunning the Forerunners those 300 years, with them getting more desperate over generations. Unable to contain it, they first abandoned most of the galaxy. With eventual defeat and breach of the Maginot Sphere becoming more certain, They created Mendicant Bias as a last hope. They also started building the Halo Array and started cataloguing life. When Mendicant Bias defected. The situation deteriorated even faster and Offensive Bias pushed for the fire break strategy inside the sphere. Knowing this was the end and with Mendicant compromising the shield worlds, they activated the array timed so, that Offensive Bias could subsequently eliminate Mendicant Bias.
343 wants it to be 300 years of stalemate that got a little out of hand in the end.
Bungies version tells us about a mighty civilization, aeons old, shepherding many youngef sentient species over 300 years of absolute terror and chaos slowly realize they are lost and decide to blow themselves up to give posterity a chance.

It just fits the Religious motifs, otherwise if The Flood isn't beating down everything quickly creating a desperate situation, it wouldn't fit - To reach Heaven you have to die, and for all their sins the final act was them having washed it all away, cleansing them of their sins as they ensured the future would be ready.

But you said "experience," and you know what? It's still probably the best Arena Shooter made for consoles, it's mechanics were great, it had one of the more notable early competitive scenes, and it has some of my favorite weapon designs (in terms of in game functionality) of any shooter I've played.
