Nytrekkor on average grunts are smaller than the average human, I think that’s pretty obvious when you compare the size of a marine and grunt in halo 3 for example.
I know these ranks were made almost entirely for gameplay rather than lore purposes, but I always thought it was weird there were no designated pilot classes. I can envision Grunts and Elites that would be given special training to be vehicle and aircraft pilots, and have their own special armor and gear to go along with it. Also on that note, it is a bit funny how Grunts can pilot some vehicles like Ghosts, but Jackals are never seen in the games piloting or driving anything. Is there a lore explanation for this? Maybe since the Jackals are essentially just pirates and mercenaries, the upper Covenant caste never trusted them with the keys to any expensive hardware.
When the grunts rebelled I feel one of the things the grunts gave as part of coming back was they keep the keys and if the birds get near them they get the hands 🤣
As I remember it jackals have very narrow vision, making them good marksmen but bad at any fast reflex combat. This would make sense as their style tends to be sit back and shoot and why they don’t pilot craft and are terrible at melee.

The golden armor in Halo 3 odst is (what I believe) a queen colony. This video is very informative and to the point, also very good layout. I’ve been brought up on this game and I’m not exactly a hardcore fan but I did enjoy the halo games and to see the franchise that I’ve grown up with to fall like it has is really sad. Hopefully infinite can fix 343s past mistakes. Keep up the work you deserve a lot more likes for this amount of effort.
In halo legends, there was a chapter of an arbiter battling in sanghelios, they are shown as sort of samuraiesque society, could also be cus of halo legends being cartoon/anime oriented, but still, very interesting
Its actually in the book “Contact Harvest”. When the 3 prophets we see in the games are having their ascension ceremony a few Grunt Merchants described exactly as you did show up.
I hate the Brute Minor - Major - Ultra armor schemes in Halo 3. The colors and patterns are too similar to one another for me to differenciate them on the field. Plus Blue just isn't a fitting color for Brutes, I prefer the higher ranking Brute colors like Brown, Red, Grey and the like, makes them much more intimidating than the mellow royal blue colors.
I like that you kept all the info on screen with the border, while also showing the video clips of the units (audience can watch clips or when not interested they can read the info on screen). Keep it up!
Wow, I never realized how much the lower rank brute armor all looked the same. it looks really bad to see just one blue colour defining all of them. A bit of crimson like elite major would have been nice.
Who else thinks that the Brute Honour Guards should have made a brief return when you and the flood make your way across the brute infested bridge at the end of The Covenant? And these Brutes would be the toughest in the game, making your last encounter with the Covenant a memorable one
Alright so we have super small sentinel, small sentinel, and big sentinel. Then in Halo wars I we get medium and smaller-but-not-smallest Sentinel and in Halo wars II we get super big sentinel.
One notable difference between the gold mgalekgolo and the regular blue ones is that the gold seem to only shoot one fuel rod shot rather than the consistent line.
@@tylerellis9097 in CE they shoot fuel rod shots whereas in Halo 2-3 they shoot streams instead of fuel rods. In Reach and H4 they go back to fuel rod shots and in h5 they either shoot fuel rods or multiple mini homing ones. Because Halo 3: ODST uses halo 3 assets, the generic blue hunters have particle cannons that shoot streams whereas the gold hunters, commonly called spec ops hunters by fans, shoot fuel rod shots in a game where they would otherwise shoot streams.
Tubby Duck They’re Gold cause they’re a new variant added for ODST. The only difference between it and the Blue Hunter is the projectile it shoots. It’s not a Spec Ops Hunter come on really.
Fascinating video, one thing that could have been mentioned though, as talked about in some of the more recent books about the Silent Shadow: They function as the Secret Police of Sangheili command structure, which I thought was fascinating. Even Shipmasters and Fleet Masters that saw a First Sword of the Silent Shadow boarding their ship feared for their lives, knowing that there would be little they could do to stop a First Sword from removing them from their command, by force if necessary.
You reckon it would be possible to do a Promethean version of this? I understand how difficult and long this would've taken to make, but we really don't get much info about the Promethean, it would be nice for someone to shine some light on them.
Prometheans don’t have ranks other than Captain and Normal like Soldier captain, Crawler captain, and Knight captain. Excluding Firefight ranks. That would be a long list considering they have many name Variations.
@@atlas9852 Same here. Though it'd likely be less of a Knights Rank video and more of an "All Prometheans" video. I have noticed at least 3 Promethean Knights in Halo 4: Smooth back, spiky back, and glowey back. I think the glowing back is called a Knight Battlewagon? Idk, just heard it somewhere. There's regular and alpha (spiky) crawlers, and I don't think watchers have a ranking system. Halo 5 is the only Halo I'm not really a fan of, so I don't know about the human-sized Promethean soldier things.
I'm a new subscriber and I absolutely love your content! I know this video probably took a long time to make so I really appreciate it! I just played through all the campaigns on Halo MCC and wow your videos make it 100% better!
What about Kaidon? I know it’s basically a political rank but you also mentioned the High Councilors so it probably should’ve been included. This is a long and spectacular video though so I know it’s really easy to forget a few things here and there. Edit: My bad, Kaidon is not a recognized rank in the Covenant only in Sangheili politics.
I feel sorry for the human who discover what the San’Shyuum was like during the Forerunner days. I probably would have nightmares for days with that knowledge.
Its quite possible that the San'Shyuum looked differently than how they currently do, which could explain why they were considered beautiful. They look the way they do now because of massive inbreeding due to the limited population on High Charity
@Sakkra101 Well sometimes I would accidentally fire on friendly Elites because they and the Brutes both showed up as tall blue blobs in my peripheral vision, so maybe having actual enemies on your side isn’t such a good idea for friendly fire.
@@Definitely_Dave especially since after and during the human covie war, pockets of them had colonies where humans and species of all kinds traded, both normally and black market, and were peaceful with each other, and were distanced from the war for the most part.
Ahh. Love a good, long lore video. Been putting this on for 10 mins here and there when I’m waiting on something or just have a few minutes. Good stuff!
It's kind of disappointing that almost all of the Brute ranks in Halo 3 wear armour that is so similarly styled and coloured. It's really difficult to actually pick out the various sub-ranks in gameplay.
If the Covenant had attempted to understand Humanity as an enemy, I wonder if Yanme’e would’ve been used more frequently on Earth, due to their psychologically terror-inducing bug-like appearance. Imagine the sheer terror that loosing an army of buggers on a city like New Mombasa would create in people, as opposed to the military might of the Sangheili or the, uh, brutality of the Jiralhanae. Also, I imagine Lekgolo, as opposed to Mgalekgolo, could cause a lot of damage along these lines. I’d guess the gold Mgalekgolo are the ones of the pair that are higher-ranked, or the one of the pair that existed before the other, with the blue ones being the lower-ranked.
Okay first off, cool to know that the white Honor Guard in the Mega Bloks spectre set is actually a canon rank. Guess I never noticed them in Halo 2. And second, Ian how bored are you in quarantine?

I kind of knew of ranks and stuff but wasn't sure what they were called. Awesome video! Now I'll be calling them by their proper name rather than Red, Blue or Gold . I've escalated from Halo Normie!
After checking the HBO Elite Namelizer, I found out my name is Lesa 'Eudaree (Lesa 'Eudar after leaving the Covenant) and my rank is gold. I believe I'm a Zealot. I'm going with the original chosen rank colors for the Sangheili. Blue for Minor, Red for Major, White for Ultra, and Gold for Zealot. (They should've left the rank colors alone for Reach.) Plus it's the rank I'd like to be. The only known ranks above Zealot are Councilor, Arbiter, and Imperial Admiral after all. Well... According to Halo Alpha.
I think the Gold Armored Hunters were in ODST because of the fact that both versions of the Hunter canons were used, so they made a Gold version so it's easier to tell which canon the hunter is going to use by looking at them.
You forgot the best Elite of them all. The Council Ultra Honor Guard Elite! The Master Chief got lucky and killed him but by far the most bad ass elite of them all.
I killed an “elite hero” in halo reach firefight once. Was blastin so hard didn’t even know it was a different rank until after. Is that supposed to be bob?

Icy Knightmare damn those silent shadow elites are tough sob’s
This is one of the most comprehensive and well-researched videos I've ever seen. Great job man! As always!
Unggoy Heavies during legendary gruntpocolyse custom firefight is about the most scariest thing beyond Jackal Halo 3 Snipers lol
if someone tells me they aint scared of Halo Reach Noob Tube wielding grunts they dead lying lol
Suicide grunts have gotten the jump on me numerous times and got me with jump scares.

Halo 3 snipers? Never played halo 2?
Thomas Kelley prolly what he meant
This video is very informative and to the point, also very good layout. I’ve been brought up on this game and I’m not exactly a hardcore fan but I did enjoy the halo games and to see the franchise that I’ve grown up with to fall like it has is really sad. Hopefully infinite can fix 343s past mistakes. Keep up the work you deserve a lot more likes for this amount of effort.
Japanese: Kill himselfs when they lose a battle.
Elites: Where can I learn this power?
Some elites do the exact same thing. Also samurais do that.
In halo legends, there was a chapter of an arbiter battling in sanghelios, they are shown as sort of samuraiesque society, could also be cus of halo legends being cartoon/anime oriented, but still, very interesting
Japanese: not from the dishonorable
Like I know honor and all that but don’t you have a war to win?
Samurai only commit sepuku under really drastic circumstances. They never did it just cause they lost a fight.
Damn you man! The hype was instant the moment I saw this!
Covenant Canon can u do a vid on the the Sangheili language
Covenant Canon and like how to use the triangles in a sentence
destiny nakei You mean the Covenant symbols for their alphabet?
PackHunter117 both
PackHunter117 it’s very interesting to learn both .halopedia has a good diagramme but it’s confusing
I remember reading about some piece of lore talking about unggoy merchants that had jewels on their methane tanks/harness
Its actually in the book “Contact Harvest”. When the 3 prophets we see in the games are having their ascension ceremony a few Grunt Merchants described exactly as you did show up.
@@laughingbeans7715 thanks man I knew I read it somewhere haven't read contact harvest in a long time
I hate the Brute Minor - Major - Ultra armor schemes in Halo 3. The colors and patterns are too similar to one another for me to differenciate them on the field. Plus Blue just isn't a fitting color for Brutes, I prefer the higher ranking Brute colors like Brown, Red, Grey and the like, makes them much more intimidating than the mellow royal blue colors.
I got Vietnam flashbacks when I heard Sniper Jackals.
I like that you kept all the info on screen with the border, while also showing the video clips of the units (audience can watch clips or when not interested they can read the info on screen). Keep it up!
Man really had me watch a video on covenant ranks at 1 am. But, like I’d do it again.
Can you review older halo books like contact harvest and ghost of onyx because I want to hear what you think about them
Yes!!!!!
Bobby Hamner that would be awesome
If he had read them he’d know he got a lot of the info about Tartarus wrong. He was not the first chieftain. His uncle was, read Contact Harvest.
@@kusovia1148 I thought he meant first as in the first one we see.
@Scp 173 hi
Wow, I never realized how much the lower rank brute armor all looked the same. it looks really bad to see just one blue colour defining all of them. A bit of crimson like elite major would have been nice.
The Brutes were last minute additions in Halo 2 story. But the EU and other stuff have diverse their armor a bit.
@@elijahwatson3474 I meant by in halo 3. It's just them wearing more armour but they just all blend into this blue mob.
@@TheLastSterling1304 I honestly didnt notice the armor or toughness diffrence in the blue armored brutes. Even on legendary.
Ryan To that’s more because the armor variants
Do agree more colours would be good
Elijah Watson Halo 2 Brutes have different fur colors based on Rank. He’s talking about 3.
Who else thinks that the Brute Honour Guards should have made a brief return when you and the flood make your way across the brute infested bridge at the end of The Covenant? And these Brutes would be the toughest in the game, making your last encounter with the Covenant a memorable one
Thanks for the great video, Ian. Liked how you explored the Anniversary versions too!
I'd like to see a sentinel ranks along with the Prometheans.
Alright so we have super small sentinel, small sentinel, and big sentinel. Then in Halo wars I we get medium and smaller-but-not-smallest Sentinel and in Halo wars II we get super big sentinel.
This premiered 117 minutes ago that’s made my day
One notable difference between the gold mgalekgolo and the regular blue ones is that the gold seem to only shoot one fuel rod shot rather than the consistent line.
So CE’s?
James Burgess wdym?
Nation Infact it’s the only difference and the reason they are Gold.
This channel is criminally underrated. I’d like to point out the amazing editing.
Dude who cares about the prometheans though?
@@paperclip6377 me
@@atlas9852 Same here.
Such a great video! Love how descriptive it is🔥🙌🔥
Marine: “What did you do on Halo after the pillar of autumn crashed?”
Chief: “I killed a bunch of minors then left.”
Marine: “holup?”
I feel sorry for the human who discover what the San’Shyuum was like during the Forerunner days. I probably would have nightmares for days with that knowledge.
ONI would know.
Its quite possible that the San'Shyuum looked differently than how they currently do, which could explain why they were considered beautiful. They look the way they do now because of massive inbreeding due to the limited population on High Charity
im bad at life Master Builder was huge asshole and fucked them over after the Human-Forerunner war. The inbreeding was a long term effect of stuff.
@Straight Busta I like your style. It's a disgusting style, but I like it.
prophet so hot n spicy it gave me the logic plague😩😫
I want the skirmishers back
We killed almost all of them on reach
Mikhael Hebert
Almost!
The Tvaoans could have been on multiple different asteroids...
@Sakkra101 Well sometimes I would accidentally fire on friendly Elites because they and the Brutes both showed up as tall blue blobs in my peripheral vision, so maybe having actual enemies on your side isn’t such a good idea for friendly fire.
I heard they're gonna be in Infinite.
I’d kill for a book about the Kig Yar resistance against the covenant.
Honestly I’d love the Jackals to be fleshed out more in general
James Burgess yeah, jackals are really interesting, and they have a lot of potential.
Jackal run black markets on High Charity anybody?
@@Definitely_Dave especially since after and during the human covie war, pockets of them had colonies where humans and species of all kinds traded, both normally and black market, and were peaceful with each other, and were distanced from the war for the most part.
@@space_racc the war was actually tiny in comparison to the covenant considering unsc space is where it was fought
Ahh. Love a good, long lore video.
Been putting this on for 10 mins here and there when I’m waiting on something or just have a few minutes. Good stuff!
RUclipsr: makes halo content
Audible: Now this looks like a job for me
It's kind of disappointing that almost all of the Brute ranks in Halo 3 wear armour that is so similarly styled and coloured. It's really difficult to actually pick out the various sub-ranks in gameplay.
You and me both. Gathering footage for some of them was and absolute chore.
Really makes me wish that all the halo games had this diversity of units :(
They do, this whole video is talking about ranks from the Halo games
Splendur many of these are from lore tho
@@JaWalrus oh no what I meant is all of these in a single game!

I find it hilarious that the covenants entire “activate the rings for the great journey” was impossible without humanity
I miss that white Honour Guard
Not too bored. It's not all that different from my regular day-to-day
*MeGa BLoKs? LeGoO RiPPoFf!*
If you never noticed honour guard in halo 2 then you havent finished the campaign. Theres one or two missions where theres litteraly only honour guard elites
@@iamyourmom2 He means the White one
Which exists only as a glitch and actually changes depending on the playthrough.
Also what mission has only Honour Guards as enemies
You might as well do a battle tactics series where you examine the roles and lore and do hypothetical battles.

You didn't include Yap-yap THE DESTROYER
Is that cannon?
Osiris Mau always has been
Yap-Yap is a decon
This is an awesome video. I've been wanting to see halo content like this for a long time.
I don’t know why but the Brutes nuking themselves back into the Stone Age seems in character them…
Crazy to think how even the Unggoy are pretty big for being one of the smallest covenant species.
I thought the intro said "this video was brought to you by arbiter"
Covenant: Has complex ranking systems that take veteran warriors of different species decades of violent wars to rise through
One green spartan: So anyways I started blasting...
Plasma grenade: I’m ‘bouta end this general’s whole career.
Damn, the brute range from 1100 to 1500 pounds and Buck casually had one fall onto him
Such a dope video. Knew nothing about canon an played lots of CE, 2, 3, 4, ODST, reach, and playing wars the most. Thanks for the vid
I kind of knew of ranks and stuff but wasn't sure what they were called. Awesome video! Now I'll be calling them by their proper name rather than Red, Blue or Gold . I've escalated from Halo Normie!
Consistently good content!
There is so much Tagalog in the lore.
Unggoy - Monkey
Tala System - ‘Star’ System
I think the Gold Armored Hunters were in ODST because of the fact that both versions of the Hunter canons were used, so they made a Gold version so it's easier to tell which canon the hunter is going to use by looking at them.
You forgot the best Elite of them all.
The Council Ultra Honor Guard Elite!
The Master Chief got lucky and killed him but by far the most bad ass elite of them all.
No the arbiter is
I didn't know the chieftan that challenges you on the ark had a name. let alone ambitions
GrowlingScarab7 I kill that fucker in the room with the invisible brutes with a plasma canon before he runs off.
I killed an “elite hero” in halo reach firefight once. Was blastin so hard didn’t even know it was a different rank until after. Is that supposed to be bob?
I love the spec ops elite class but can’t deny how deadly the zealots are they killed our Spartans 3s after hunting them down on reach 😢
Tis helped me with ranking people in my Covenant clan. Thank you for making this!
Didn't Arbiter (Thel Vadam) hold the position of Supreme Commander during Halo CE and the beginning of Halo 2? He led all of the Covenant forces during the attack on the first Halo.
When I saw the thumbnail for this video, I thought it said “Pranks of the covenant”
Lol
*after the covenant war*
Arbiter: “we just taught it would be a very neat social experiment”
Hood: “what was the experiment”
Arbiter: “reduce the human population to I don’t know.... zero”
*leans closer*
Arbiter “also the grunts don’t need the methane tanks. We just wanted to see how the they fought on meth”
What’s really impressive is his ability to seamlessly pronounce all these species, planet, and system names.
It has just dawned upon me that this kind of content is what replaced the in-box manual with it's lists and lore
Very happy that its essentially confirm that skimisher are still since you mention it at 13:03 because i clearly remember when Halo Reach first came out, i was stright up amaze and became star struck 😀 with thier awesome animal and aggressive designs, best part in terms of gameplay and lore these skimishers are absolutely "aggressive" and i love it! ❤️
It was sad that supposedly the skimisher subspecies is near extinction but as you stated with recent halo lore these guys are still around! I really hope the next halo game or even in halo infinite update they can make an awesome comeback!
