    I try not to worry too much about steel anymore. I just buy designs that I like. I understand the gripe with the handles but I’d like to know how long it would take most people to realize if all their blades steels turned to 8cr overnight.

      Yet its in his hand. R+D and IP is not free so factor that into the cost plus complexity of the lock over say an axis lock machining wise and fitting the parts. Now i do think the price is maybe a little high but the premium packaging isn’t free either so theres some more cost. And the end of the day if the average knife enthusiast was really worried about value they would have stopped at the ontario rat and said good enough 🤣. Still Enjoyed the review

    Completely agree with you. For $150, this knife should have come with G-10 handles and CPM-S30V steel at the bare minimum. When you have USA made knives like the Hogue Deka come with G-10 and 20CV for less than $150, it makes this knife look overpriced. Demko is cashing in on his success, fame, and hype right now. Once the hype dies down, hopefully this knife will go on sale for under $100, where it's more appropriately priced. Not saying it's a bad knife, but not worth the asking price at all.

    I think there is a premium for an innovative locking mechanism that is unique and I’m sure a time consuming engineering process. But, it is all relative, the AD20 is 425+, with materials you can get for 200 on other knives.

  • @Ant24RAD

    Comparing Demko and Cold Steel is not really fair as they are nowhere near the same place as a brand. Cold steel likely pays far less per knife to manufacturer due to several reasons including number of knives bought and history working with the manufacturer. The technology in the air lite has been paid off where as the shark lock is still paying on the r&d. The first knives with the triad lock where likely not sub $100. Until you see cut tests with this particular knife, don't you think it is premature to talk down the steel used? Especially when this particular factory has a history of producing impressive knives with this steel? There are far more important factors in the quality of a blade than slight changes in formula. I actually like the way this grivory looks and feels, especially compared to all the other knives using this material. The only thing I think I agree with you on is the making on the handle making it appear cheap. I think this is one of the more interesting knives to come out this year, as I will never pay +$400 for the AD20. I actually wanted to write off the shark lock as a gimmick before getting it in hand. As a true hard use edc knife the ad20.5 is hard to beat in my opinion.

    Appreciate the unbiased review and the fact you haven’t let the hype train cloud your judgement. Every time I handle my 20.5 I feel like its a $60 Cold steel with a $90 lock. I took mine apart and theres no way it cost more than $20 to make the lock mechanism. Its a fun knife and there will be loads of aftermarket scale options for it but then the overall cost keeps rising. 10A steel is probably the toughest blade steel than can be cut/stamped without using a waterjet which again is a cost saving measure that makes it hard to justify the high price. It will still sell like hotcakes though just for the fidget factor. 👍

    I would chalk the price up to the complexity of the lock, I work as a smith and as I tell almost all the customers I interact with, the majority of the cost is in the work, not the materials. Sure, I mostly work in regular construction steel, stainless and aluminium, not specialized steels, but even if they are ten times as cheap as the knife steels I'm pretty sure at least a third of the money in any knife is tied up in the cost of the work, even if they are machine ground, someone has to watch, service and repair the machines, and assemble the knife. The shark lock looks complex and probably have a bunch of moving parts that all have to be made, and it all takes time

    • @everydaycarry1328

    I think this is a balanced and fair review. I like my AD20.5 but I also like to fidget, and the pointy sharklock is killing my finger, which never happened with my AD20. I don't know if it's due to width or bad/sharp jimping on the sharkfin, but it's an issue. The price is high for the materials, no question. From interviews I know Andrew Demko wants this to be entry level then go up in price with better materials, but I think it would be a better introduction at $200 with G10 and M390 / 20CV / Maxamet / Cru-wear etc.... still half the price of the AD20 but in a truly awesome EDC size.

    • @j.cut_
      @j.cut_ 3 года назад +2

      I can’t say I agree. What youre really paying for here is the lock. It’s not cheap to produce a lock like this. If it were a back lock, liner lock, or frame lock, sure…you’re right, the handle and steel wouldn’t fit. It isn’t though. AUS10A is the best stanpable steel, meaning it doesn’t take a water jet or other form of machining to produce, and the FRN is 🤷🏻‍♂️. Most of the cost comes from the lock, but they used the best materials they could in relation to the price point.

    • @terpdx
      @terpdx 3 года назад +2

      @@j.cut_ You have a point, there. I still don't think we're paying for the actual material & manufacturing of the lock, but rather recouping R&D costs (which is a legitimate price factor). How much that should be worth is up for debate.

    • @tidge879
      @tidge879 3 года назад

      Yeah, I don't agree. They've had to buy the tooling and machines to mass produce a new lock in Taiwan. Future models with the same lock will surely be cheaper, but with the costs of the tooling, I can't imagine they're making much profit at all. A single high speed carbide bit can cost thousands, never mind the machine it goes in to. I can almost guarantee that they had to buy the tooling outright to stop there being copies being made from the same factory and sold on Ali Express.

    I saw video of Demko saying at Blade Show that the steel was the best steel they could use without changing the manufacturing process, which would increase the cost substantially--I'm convinced by that, and it really doesn't seem like the markup on this guy is beyond the pale, especially for a work knife or fidget EDC.
    Idk if it's accurate to imply that the packaging is responsible for the price. OFC I would love to see this in S35VN or Magnacut, even at a higher price, but honestly, I think it's pretty sneaky marketing to use AUS10A and Grivory for the first production version of a new lock (insuring that all the enthusiasts will buy it, because they like the design even if they don't love the materials), which then allows you to re-release it in G10 and S35VN down the line and get most of those enthusiasts to re-purchase the same knife.

    This knife is a product of economics, the Demkos had to front the money to get these made. Not cheap. Of course Cold Steel could bring these out for $75 but they could purchase three times as many. They didn't Kickstart the knife or anything like that, what they did do was provide a quality knife that will handle 95% of your daily tasks at a price they could afford too. First off anyone who thinks Andrew demko would charge more for a knife just because he thinks he can get it doesn't know who Andrew demko is. Second, you clearly don't understand how production and manufacturing works, and why it's cheaper for large companies to do it then small companies like Andrew Demko. These knives cost so much because Andrew demko basically has to pay for them out of pocket and it's expensive because he can't produce him in gigantic batches the way Cold Steel can. Manufacturer is actually charged less per piece the larger the batch. Also Demko is paying out of pocket for advertising wholesale shipping to the dealers etc. If he ever gets to the point where he's a large company and he can afford to say have a batch of 10,000 made and instead of 1,000 it will cost him a lot less, and the knife will cost less to purchase

    I have an interesting thought regarding the Demko AD 20.5. I was wondering if you added micarta aftermarket scales to this Demko AD 20.5, would it then be able possible to attach to it the pocket clip from the Cold Steel AD 10🤔 Look at the pocket clip of the Cold Steel AD 10, it's a smaller wider pocket clip that not only has a flat plateau at the end of it's tip, it also has a very similar diagonal pocket clip screw hole pattern. The smooth micarta aftermarket scales would eliminate the tip of the shorter Cold Steel AD 10 pocket clip from sitting on the texturing of the original plastic AD 20.5 scales. If the pocket clip from the Cold Steel AD 10 does fit on the Demko AD 20.5, this could be the ultimate pocket clip solution for the Demko AD 20.5🤞🙏

      @@WaynesSharpWorld After looking at it again, the screw hole pattern of the Cold Steel AD 10 dosen't match the screw hole pattern of the Demko AD 20.5☹ So what I'm currently doing is having someone on Etsy(Pops) basically make me exact same pocket clip as on the Cold Steel AD 10 but have it configured to work with the screw hole pattern in the Demko AD 20.5👍

  • @ThomasConnolly

    I really hate the odd/weird pocket clip on the Demko Ad 20.5!!! Why does there need to be a giant lanyard hole in the middle of the base of the pocket clip and why? Also, the two diagonal screw hole pattern of the pocket clip is weird and therefore makes it difficult to make aftermarket pocket clips. I know that Lynch Northwest makes a deep carry pocket for the Demko AD 20.5 but that aftermarket pocket clip is way too deep carry for my liking!!!! The Lynch Northwest AD 20.5 deep carry pocket clip actually has the top of the loop/end of the pocket clip higher than the end of the scales of the AD 20.5 so the AD 20.5 ends up being extremely deep carry and therefore the end of the handle rests below the seem of your pants pocket. I also never liked how skinny and thin Lynch Northwest makes their pocket clips, and how the tip of their pocket clips is always a harsh checkmark.

    Had a chance to buy one - the drop point one and passed. Sorry - don't like plastic and Aus10. Would have bought if it had 20cv or something similar. Love the lock, but not enough to pay more than I think it's worth. Have overpayed for plenty of exclusive Spyderco's, but needed to scratch the collecting itch for specific variant. Personally feel the AD20 is overpriced as well, but at least has proper steel and handles. Flame suit is on...

    It's nice to see someone call out the horrible pricing on this knife. This is a really dirty move by Demko and I will probably never buy any of their knives. It's funny that you get a nice box, case and cloth but the knife is made out of such cheap materials. What a joke. I've always thought Benchmades and Spydercos were overpriced but they seem like a major bargain after seeing a knife like this priced at $150.

    I like the lock design but it’s tough to justify the price. The other thing I have a hard time understanding is about the 3V versions being so much higher than the K110/D2 versions. Isn’t 3V very similar to D2? I think they could have at least done something inexpensive, but good like a stainless product like 14c28N or 154CM. I honestly think it would have justified the cost a bit more. Knowing the OEM being Cold Steel they use a lot of AUS10 so in order to get his lock out to the masses and the fact that the Able Lock and his other locks and is probably Demko’s biggest source of sales made it a decent way to get a lot of them in the hands of users.

However, I advise you or anyone else who thinks this is “overpriced” to go to REC’s YT channel and watch the interview with Andrew Demko. He gives a full explanation regarding pricing and total cost it took for him to make this production knife. I have the clip point and love it and think it’s worth every penny.

    So, second best action/deployment/fidgets in the industry.?
    Good build quality?
    It’s probably 60-100% more expensive than a comparable material coldsteel, but it’s a Demko therefore exclusive/coveted even in “mass”production form. This is still a very small release compared to spyderco, coldsteel or even benchmade. Economies of scale does apply.
    Yeah, it’ll be available in better materials a year from now, and hopefully at the same price, but people are already buying it on the secondary for a markup.
    The community set the demand based on availability and time frame not the materials.
    Good business practices and market awareness resulted in the price.
    As their partnership continues with the Taiwan factory you can expect more variety in materials etc. as demand adjusts you can expect the perceived value to shift.
    Did I ever mention I’m an economist?
    I’m eager to get mine. I’m eager to see a 154 cm or d2 AD20. I’m eager to see new blade shapes on both at a variety of price points. All of this will come. For those like me who can’t wait we have this if we are lucky enough to get it on the first wave.
    I think you’ll enjoy where this run leads. I could be wrong, but it is a reasonable expectation.

    My two cents: Demko is making out-of-the-box decisions.
    Make the scales easy to replace, then make it easy for aftermarket scales to fit the hardware, then get the cheapest possible scales to reduce cost. I bought RGT micarta scales and it thickened up the handle and made the use a whole lot batter, and using the stock hardware.
    Also, this is Demkos kickstarter. Yes the ad20 was a success, but to get funds to ramp up production as quickly as possible you need money. If people pay $150 for cheap materials but good design, then that gives Demko room to grow and make more designs.
    Now I'm waiting for the premium versions with better steel to show up. They'll probably still have grivory scales but there's already a couple companies working on releasing titanium scales.
    I think this is a great way to raise funds and encourage people to customise their own knives without going the Hinderer Route.

    The grivory scales are my biggest complaint on this knife. 😡 Makes it feel like a cheap $60 knife. I was gonna get the spyderco para 3 over this knife same price at $150 but I chose the ad 20.5 clip point. I'm kinda starting to have buyers remorse 🤦‍♂️

    The AD 20.5 should be priced at $80-$90. The materials are very budget, as civivi knives prove. G10 and D2 or Nitro V for the $80 price range. Sure, the shark lock is awesome, and Andrew Demko is an awesome designer, but that doesn't warrant that price tag. But, before you try to convince me it does, go watch reviews on knives that have G10 and AUS10A, almost every review is "$60 for AUS10A is too much, it's just not that good". But slap a Demko name on there, and suddenly AUS10A is awesome, and plastic handles are overlooked. Hopefully, Demko significantly reduces the price on these because, yes, I want one, just not for that price.

    This is not assuming this is you. This is just who we compete w/in the knife world, lol kinda
    99% of knife guys vomit over grivory. 100% of "knife guys" that don't cut w/ their knives moisten up over interaction w/ designers/makers. "K.G.s" sell 20.5s for $250-$400 on eBay. They sell on eBay period. We all knew it was grivory, grivory flexes. If all you do is "fidget" w/ a knife, it's worth $150+. If you use your knife, like skinning back 750-0125 copper transformer cable might still be ok, but you'll be better grabbing a $40-70 aus10a bladed knife in g10 or steel bc it's gonna chew through that edge half a day. Considering the availability of the ad20 from dealers it's worth it if you want to try out the lock. .Or you could pay $750 after tax for a G10 from simps on eBay like I almost did last week, then I remembered I don't care for them as people, and proceed to wait, and wait to attempt beating them to the cart if I see my email in stock notification b4 them. Maybe I'll have one before I die. I'm 36

    Scrolling through these comments is a little disappointing. People are really out here thinking that Demko is gauging prices? To keep the price at 150 or below he used the best materials he could. Had he used a better steel, it would’ve costed significantly more for the machining cost as AUS10A is the best steel you can stamp-out. Grivory is an ehh, sure…but I’ve hear from many people that it feels just like g10 anyways so 🤷🏻‍♂️. Everyone needs to realize that the lock is what you pay for primarily on this knife, if you wanted S45 or 20CV or something similar, it would almost definitely cost over $200 and that’s without adding a different handle material to boot. Don’t get me wrong though, I’m not saying to go buy it if you don’t like 10A and grivory, I’m just saying that demko isn’t ripping you off.

    I'll say this. Bugout or this. This everytime. Not even close. That said yes the bugout is a little cheaper now but I'd gladly pay the extra 20 for this and I'll get over the aus10a to s30v difference. Dont care. Most the people that are gonna say it cost to much to have aus10a probably dont even use their knives enough to ever even notice and are just jumping on the steel bandwagon. You made all great points and I agree with them to an extent. i would have taken better handle scales ( preferably micarta then g10 ) over better blade steel everytime. And yes that platform for the clip just makes it worse. But you have to remember this is the cheapest they could have gone without sacrificing to much John and Andrew even said aus10a was the best they could do without having the price go up significantly more do to the manufacturing process , There are reasons for everything. AND you know someone is gonna make aftermarket scales. Think about the knives that are sub 100 . Yes there is alot and yes there are great ones BUT this is better simply because the locking mechanism and overall design. Personal opinion. That alone makes it worth it to me.

I also think it's a great user knife at 150 still, which is a hard thing to do with the AD20 when the secondary prices are what they are and the how big it is. And its more accessible and EDC-able size wise. Still less than a stock PM2.

    Demko is devaluing his innovative engineering by marketing it as an overpriced knife with a "party trick" lock. His invention deserves better. He is overreaching with his first marketing foray into the broader market based on the hype of the full American Made AD20 and all the excitement it created. Fully justified excitement based on it's materials and US custom made fit and finish. This has none of that except the down sized lock and is overpriced They may be continuing to market this too quickly to try to ride the hype for all it's worth based on previews of newer custom AD20' with Ti scales and milling and some hand ground blade shape options in Elmax priced over $1000. Check Knife Joy.
