omg trust me! she definitely has many of her feisty moments. but i make sure to trim her claws before i try anything new with her. incase she fights me i don't want to bleed to death hahaha! but ya baby steps is key!!
Thanks, I appreciate you spelled out how long you did each step getting up to actually using the toothbrush on her. My cat seals her mouth really tight so I'll try this method to get her used to it. Guess I also need to get treats. When she was acting cute it cracked me up lol
honestly i think most vet videos they pick a cat where it's already used to it to show the process of brushing the teeth. or they'd pick a cat thats very docile. because i doubt it'll make a vet look good if they cat is trying to fight them lol!
My cat literally was on my head in a second. Back Claw went thru my top lip, still have the scar. She bit me on the head three times too drew blood and everything.. your cat is being soo good I’m jealous. Mine is currently mad at me for trying again today
omg!! are you ok?! thats intense!!! how old is your cat? did you start just by rubbing your fingers on their teeth? if you want to protect your finger from biting, use a finger brush. it'll protect your finger
you're welcome!! i got my toothpaste from the vet. if you go to any pet store or your vet to ask for an "ENZYMATIC TOOTHPASTE" they will have the right ones for you in different flavours too! the brand doesn't matter. as long as it's ENZYMATIC it'll be perfect. i have found that the "chicken flavour" is the least stinky and the cats like it. the seafood flavour they like it too but it smells so bad. and NEVER get the vanilla mint flavour!!! we humans may like the smell but man... when i tried it with my cats they hated the vanilla mint flavour so much that they wouldn't let me brush their teeth for a whole week!!! i hope this helps =)
you just push the toothbrush further in to reach the back teeth. they wont like it very much. so get them comfortable with brushing the fangs first then once they are comfortable with that then try brushing the back teeth as well.
((To anyone reading this, if you've started brushing your cat's teeth as an adult, can you maybe tell me how it went?)) I have a cute bean who's actually the first pet I've ever been fully responsible for. I've gotten used to doing many things I wasn't too comfortable doing before (like feeding him medicine x'D), I've done my best to train him since he was a kitten, and I'm REALLY lucky to have been blessed with a gentle, smart, good boy™. Unfortunately, I never EVER knew you had to brush their teeth. Just happened to look it up today! So I'm a bit worried... I've never brushed his teeth, and while my cat is a friendly boy, he's also recently turned 4, which obviously means he's an adult. I've had to do many things he dislikes before with good results, and I've handled many (docile and aggressive) cats in my life, to a point where him hurting me really isn't a concern (especially since he's never done so before). Rather than him hurting me or resisting it (we'd probably get there after a few weeks or months), I'm more worried about it hurting our relationship, since it's more of a daily routine of something he'll probably hate... I've never been this close to a cat, or have had a cat be this attached to me, so having him avoid me every time I'd reach for him or try to hold him would break my heart ^^' I wonder if anyone has had this happen? I'm really glad you were able to start with your fluffy Deku (love the name, love the fluff!) from a young age, I wish I had been that well informed. Props to you as an owner! I just hope I'm not too late in trying to keep my cat's teeth healthy. Thank you for sharing the video too, and being so descriptive! ^^
hey Anna, sorry for the late reply, i think since you've had your cat since he was a kitten, there is already a certain amount of trust between you and him. it's never too late to start. just start slow, and give him his favourite treats as encouragement. they need to be comfortable with you rubbing your fingers near their mouths first before you even try to stick a toothbrush in there. and once your cat is comfortable with you rubbing his teeth, maybe try using those finger brushes first before you try the pet toothbrushes. and the flavour of the toothpaste is key!!! make sure it's a flavour your cat will like. mine likes chicken flavoured ones. i hope this helps!
@@kukusdiary9022 it's alright, I didn't really even expect a response at all ^^ thank you for taking the time! Videos like yours are very helpful for tips and encouragement, and they also help spread the information that it's something you should try and do for your pets so they're less likely to suffer when they're older, so thank you again ^^
@@donotgothroughlittledoor7734 yes i agree! its better for them and your wallets =) potentially saving you from an expensive pet dental bill! and thank you so much for your kind words about my videos =) im so happy it helps! take care~
if thats the case then i think it's better to send your cat for a professional for teeth cleaning once a year to keep their teeth healthy instead of having them hating you or attacking you
5 weeks old might be too young because eventually his kitten teeth will fall out ( around 6 months of age ) then you would need to be more diligent with brushing when the adult teeth comes in because those would be forever.. but what you can do at the moment is to get your cat comfortable with you handling it's mouth. so start by chin and cheek scratches and once they are comfortable with your fingers around its mouth, then try rubbing your fingers on their gums and whatever teeth they do have at the moment. since hes only 5 weeks old i'm not sure if they have teeth yet? since i've never had a kitten that young. i hope this helps! once your kitty trusts you, teeth brushing in the future will be no problem. so starting young is key!
I’m getting a Siberian when I move out. Is there an alternative to brushing teeth? Like, for my dog, I give her Greenies. They help clean her teeth and she loves them. Is there something like that for cats too?
there are greenies for cats too! i've seen them but i've never tried them myself. but im sure if they have ti for dogs they would have something equivalent for cats. i personally think brushing it is for my own peace of mind. knowing that i'm helping her prevent teeth problems in the future. n also prevent that bad breath!
my vet suggested i brush Deku's teeth once her adult teeth comes in. so i think you can wait until your kitten's adult teeth come in. but i would say consult your vet to double check =) as for toothpaste, i posted the US/ canadian amazon links to the toothpaste & silicone toothbrush i currently use for Deku in this video's description. in the description you will find a list of Deku's other favourite items or essentials as well. i hope this helps ! =)
