@Nicole Kinner grain free diets have actually now been linked to heart conditions in pets (dogs and cats). Vets now strongly recommend against it in many circumstances. Always run that diet change by a veterinarian first.
@Nicole Kinner I'm really glad it worked for her! I just wanted to make everyone else knew to be careful before making the change. Is she still doing well?

I brush my cat's teeth morning and evening after brushing my own teeth. He comes himself and sits down and waits his turn ☺️ He thinks it's good with the cat toothpaste 😉 because I brush his teeth twice a day I usually take the top in the morning and the bottom in the evening so he does not get tired of me brushing too long. @@datinyone A tip is to only let the cat taste the toothpaste from the toothbrush the first few times so it will be positive. After a few days, you only brush for a few seconds and let the cat lick the toothbrush afterwards. Better to brush the cat's teeth for a few seconds without forcing than not being able to brush the teeth at all. Good luck 🥰

Worth noting is to actually talk to your cat gently, soothingly and quietly... if you get mad/animated it will trigger a fight/flight reaction... also important to do on those rare occasions you need to bath or shave a cat. Also, grip a cat FIRMLY... obviously don’t hurt it, but don’t give it any wiggle room either... it just works against you...when they know they can’t move they don’t freak out nearly as much... When they sense wiggle room, they will try to break free. Between a firm grip and a calm voice, they tend to be much more calm/restrained... As with anything, work up to it slowly (over days/weeks) if you cat is high strung...
Thank you for this video!! I just successfully rubbed cat toothpaste and begin to brush my 16 year old cats for the first time on the first try!! Didn't get to brush his molars very much but I rubbed them with the toothpaste super well!! Thank you Dr. Greenway!
We are so happy to hear that! Wow, it is impressive that you were able to accomplish all of that in your first try. Good on you for you for taking this on, it is so beneficial to your cat's overall health. Happy brushing! :)
Started brushing recently because of this. Cat is only coming on 4 years old, was using my finger to brush her teeth when she was a kitten to try and get her used to it but never started daily brushing. Her gums looked a bit inflamed last year and her mood completely changed, getting much more defensive so I took her to the vet, was told she had "really mild" gingivitis and was given some dentisept (chlorhexidine in paste that acts like glue almost and sticks to teeth, skin and gums) and told to use it "about once a week to once a fortnight." Honestly he seemed more intent on that being used, then frequent cleaning under general anaesthetic and extractions "when necessary" rather than being preventative. I kept doing that but her gums have gotten worse, seems like she's lost a few premolars (possibly from tooth resorption as there's a tiny nub of a tooth left, about 2.5mm diameter by 1mm depth that moves freely but isn't broken, or maybe a retained milk tooth) so I started brushing just over a week ago, starting with a wet cotton bud with 1% peroxide solution on it, then Virbac toothpaste (no more peroxide, but when I out a bit of the paste on my finger she took off running, so she must hate the smell) with the CET toothbrush. There's some bleeding (enough to stain the brush red) from her gums and when getting along/under the gum line she usually jumps in pain, though hopefully daily brushing will help reverse the gingivitis and there'll be no bleeding after a few months. She has to be held to get her teeth brushed, I'll try brushing her teeth while sitting behind her while she's facing a corner, but holding her and brushing seems to work well enough. She'll yowl and complain but won't claw or bite. Hopefully she'll get used to it.
Great video. Unfortunately, I did not know you could do this for your cat as my Vet never told me to do this with her until much later in my cat's life and by that point in time, it was too difficult for me to try this with her as she was always fiesty and so, her teeth ended up having a lot tarter. Getting her teeth cleaned earlier was not an option as it was very expensive. So I had to leave it. Still, my cat lived a long life to 18 years, and just recently had to be put to sleep as her health had deteriorated significantly. It was very hard to let her go but had to do it to end her suffering.
I agree... so many poorly produced RUclips videos out there. In all actuality, background music for an instructional video is not necessary. If you want to use a musical intro and fade as the video starts, that can be viewed as quite professional, but either a complete face, or an extremely quiet music bed is best. The important thing is the dialog!
I really love that you showed a successful way to brush a cat's teeth. an pet toothbrush that it’s so easy and effective cleaning off teeth stains is needed for your pet care.

Amazing tutorial Dr. Greenway. Been watching many videos and I have to say this is the best one I’ve seen! I’ll use your tips and approach next time I do it! Btw, Kiwi was amazing and so calm! 😻
Thank you so much for this video! I am a first time cat owner and have a squirmy cat where introducing trimming claws was a challenge so I was really apprehensive about tooth brushing thinking it's impossible. I'm starting slow and at the step of just rubbing his teeth with toothpaste on my finger but it's looking a lot more possible than I'd expect, will keep trying again thank you!
I'm so excited to get my first cat and I want to do everything right. It'll be better for the cat's health AND my financial state. I wouldn't be surprised if it improves the bond between a cat and their owner as well. Thank you for your explanation! I'm definitely going to try this!
My cat is loving and attention seeking, but you try to mess with his mouth and its hissing, screeching, claws, bitting, and hair flying everywhere. Then he won't come out for hours. Pretty sure if I did this to him every day he would go feral.
Thank you so much! This technique was perfect for my cat!! I looked this up after one of her teeth was found to have resorption and it’s too late for that one (needs to be removed) but now I can at least save the others! I’ve had so many issues in the past with dental care for her because she didn’t like dental treats, began to hate the dental treatment I put in her water, and I could never get her to sit still to have her teeth brushed! I never thought to be behind her and this seems to keep her calm! It’s also nice to know I can lightly keep her jaw closed without hurting her! Thanks! ☺️
I never realized my cat's breath stank, but when she bit my arm, I took a sniff and dang did it smell. I just ordered a toothbrush and cat toothpaste. I'm gonna start brushing her teeth once it arrives.
Honestly, my Max was a nightmare with this at first, and with my busy schedule, I don't have the time or life-organization to introduce him to it over the course of many weeks, so I sort of dove right in an expedited way from day 1: introduce the paste, day 2: introduce the brush, day 3: brush with paste. Thankfully, he was never a biter, and when he "play-nibbles," as I call it, it doesn't even kill the little bugs he likes to play with around the house (was rejected by mother, so he didn't even get the few weeks of rough play with his littermates that lots of kittens get even though they get adopted out at ~2 months). He is an escape artist, though, and no matter how firmly I held him, he managed to wriggle out of my arms (pretty amazing, as I'm a relatively strong and healthy 30 year old man). But I can say, if you commit to regular brushing ,somehow cats seem to become aware that not only is it going to be a regular part of their lives but also that it is somehow something that might be good for them (who knows, it surely seems that way with Max now, as he now seems to welcome and, dare I say, even look forward to the free, gentle, TLC). I believe if you one sticks with it, one's cat will start to become MUCH easier to brush over a time period that is a lot shorter than you'd expect. Either that or Max is just a special case and it might take a tad longer.
I’ve been struggling trying to brush my kitten’s teeth for weeks and after watching this video was able to rub his teeth with my fingers without him running away. Thank you!!!
I recently adopted a cat from a rescue, and she had a persistent bad odor that I couldn't trace until I checked her mouth. I called the rescue, explained the issue, and they agreed to take her to their vet this Monday. In the meantime, I've been playing with her using a fish rod toy and started applying some cat toothpaste, which she surprisingly accepts. My other cat enjoys playing with the toothbrush but won't tolerate the toothpaste. She's a large, feral cat and hates being held or picked up.
Great video. I just started and am getting my cat used to it. She is 2, and she doesn't eat wet food anymore. Her sister lives with her, and seems to have strong teeth and eat wet food. I should have started this years ago when she had an ear infection, and the vet told me she was getting tarter. She has the "sweeter" personality (the one with bad teeth) of the two. The other one is nice, but I would lose a finger tip.
Thank you. That's okay, better it be late than never. For additional information on how to prevent dental disease in pets visit our resource at: www.healthcareforpets.com/article/how-to-prevent-dental-disease-in-cats-and-dogs/

I just successfully brushed my 10 week old male kitten's teeth. First, I gently rubbed cat toothpaste on Maxie Drew's teeth, I held him gently and praised his calm, willing demeanor in a soft kind voice. Then, I gently brushed his teeth with his toothbrush. It had a little toothpaste on it as well. The whole time I spoke to him kindly, let him know how proud I am of him. Then when we were finished he got down gently from my lap. I clapped softly for him and praised his conduct. Fun and rewarding experience! Maxie Drew and I are victorious! I pray for this same victory with your cat(s) as well. Cheers! 💯☺🌟😻💛
Can it ever be too late? Thankfully doesn't seem to be issues but I just hope brushing once a day from now is OK, what if there's decay or plaque already?
My cat was 10 years old former feral when i first started . But patience is key and being super slow. Initially she was aggresive so i could only do it for 2 or 3 seconds. You can motivate your cat with freeze dried treats before the oral session. Do 5 to 7 times a week. Your cat will get used to it.
Starting this with my kitten and her big brother even though my big cat is very patient and accepting of me going into his mouth I’m going to go back and slow the process for him so it can become something he can enjoy. Thank you for the tips!
To everyone screaming cat more behaved at vet than at home: try using a little catnip! I noticed my loud unruly cat actuality purring and calmly allowing the vet to examine him. Right before this I also noticed them spread a little dry herb on the table(catnip) It really mellows them out and makes them euphoric lol be warned to not use too much though or they'll be over stimulated! 😂
It gets easier with practice! Things that help are soft bristle toothbrushes which is softer on their gums and always use enzymatic toothpaste that is safe for cats, most like the flavour of pet toothpastes. You've got this!
My poor cat did have extraction 2 years ago but no n one told us to brush his teeth, therefore the issue came back and now he's too old to do any of this. So we need to at least get rid of the inflammation in his mouth. I processed the way it is shown in the vid, sorry if figured it out on my own, but unfortunately i can't still get access to the bottom teeth
I've been consistent brushing my cats teeth from the side and front, but neglected the way back teeth and the inside portion of her teeth. I let my cat chew on a rubbery brush with her toothpaste on it. Is this good enough to reach the inside and back teeth? She will not let me pay her mouth open and bats my hand away from every angle. I'm not afraid of her biting or scratching but she it persistent.

I have never ever ever brushed my cat's teeth, and I've owned cat's my entire life of 35 years. I didn't even know until today this was necessary. I can't say I've ever had a cat with tooth problems that I'm aware of.
When it comes to caring for my cat, everything is giving me a headache. But I'm hoping that after watching this video and I have more understanding about how to brush a cat's teeth properly, she'll eventually want and accept me to brush her teeth since she is an old cat with almost yellowing teeth
I use my cat in the bag the cat needs a restraint like that or a big towel but this bag is great it’s also a carrier and you use it for their meds that they all need eventually. My cat Apple gets his teeth brushed one to two times a day.
I really like this video. Thanks so much for this info! Are there other things we should add to our routine as a preventive to other health problems a cat might encounter?
Thanks so much for this video. It really helped me a lot with my kitty. (BTW: bit of constructive criticism - the background sound loop is distracting, would be better without it)

I have a Maine Coon kitten (18-weeks old), and he did just “ok” with his teeth brushing. He’s teething, so his gums are very swollen and look sore (he can be very bitey!), which is why we got appropriate toys. What’s your opinion on Tempatations Dental Oral Care treats (and the furr ball control treats - since it’s a Maine Coon!). Anyway, I try to massage his gums when I can. Sometimes he’s okay with it, sometimes he’s not in the mood. Do you think 18-weeks is too old to start? Maine Coons can only go to their Forever Home after 12-weeks old as you know). How often should I brush his teeth? I used a human toothbrush (Extra Sensitive), applying very little pressure (if any at all! Not many teeth to speak of just yet!). How do I get to and brush the inside the top and inside the bottom teeth? Btw, I’m NOT using toothpaste! What type and brand should I use? I’ve never seen any at the Per Store.

Yes, you must use cat toothpaste of course, but since cat toothpaste is an enzyme, rinsing it is actually NOT recommended (the longer the enzyme remains, the better)... I am not a vet, but that is my understanding based on research.
Hi Mahsa, great question! Yes make sure you use cat toothpaste, never human toothpaste as it's toxic to pets. If your cat has bad breath your cats teeth are rotton and have decay and the needs to go to a vet and have the decayed teeth removed, you can open his mouth and take a look at his back teeth if they are yellow / brown they to have there teeth cleaned and some teeth may need to come out
Just noticed my cat's gums are very red. In spite of paying close attention to their diet and keeping them uber healthy in other ways, sadly I've not thought to practice daily gum & tooth care. Have just placed an order for toothbrush & toothpaste for cats, which arrives tomorrow. Will start the finger application for several days before attempting the toothbrush. Thank you for this video. I now have the confidence to start her treatments asap.
This is really fantastic to hear! :) Good for you for taking this on, your cat will appreciate in the long run.
@Nicole Kinner That sounds pretty bad. Glad your cat got better
@Nicole Kinner That's so great! I'm happy everything worked out well for you and your family. Having a sick kitty is hellish and a very painful experience. You don't have to deal with that anymore. Best wishes for your kitty.

@@hindalosaimi648 that's probably because your cat has tartar built up which means you have to take him to the vet or your cat might get a serious disease
He is of the breed La Perm 😻
Great idea to do the top morning and bottom evening.
We use virbac and my cats love it, one of mine likes to bite when you bother her but she sits and tolerates the brushing very well
Oh thats a great idea!! I'll give that a try
Good luck 🥰

Kiwi is so cute! I'm crying
Lol she is a cutie and a good sport!
Don't forget the full-body armor ✨️✨️😸✨️✨️
This vet looks so gentle and good and the pet is so polite and calm
Omg, this video helped me conquer brushing my cats teeths! I never thought it was possible. You rule! Thanks!
That was such a good instructional video. I've watched many and none were as calm and soothing as this one. It made me actually want to do it.
Wow she certainly lived a long life! Those things are never easy but it sounds like you did the right thing. All the best :) - The HCFP Team
Very helpful, despite the distracting background music
I agree... so many poorly produced RUclips videos out there.
Hi Binbin, thank you so much! You can use a pet toothbrush which is best but also a baby's toothbrush that you can pick up from the drug store, just make sure it has very soft bristles.
Keep it up, you've got this! Good on your for giving it a go. 😊🐾
You should add one of those pop up messages to warn not to use human toothpaste @1:22 . Not everyone might read the comments.
How did it go? Also i have a 3 year old cat. Dont stress about doing everything right as that is not possible just give it your best
Thanks! ☺️
Fantastic! So glad to hear it was helpful. 😊🐾
We totally agree. Thank you for sharing your story! All the best:) - The HCFP Team
I’ve been struggling trying to brush my kitten’s teeth for weeks and after watching this video was able to rub his teeth with my fingers without him running away. Thank you!!!

My cats breath smells like death 💀
Lol - sounds like someone might need their teeth cleaned!
Yours probably smell like death too
so you must ask a vet for that problem. its not good sign.
Must take antibiotics and clean teeth
I recently adopted a cat from a rescue, and she had a persistent bad odor that I couldn't trace until I checked her mouth. I called the rescue, explained the issue, and they agreed to take her to their vet this Monday. In the meantime, I've been playing with her using a fish rod toy and started applying some cat toothpaste, which she surprisingly accepts. My other cat enjoys playing with the toothbrush but won't tolerate the toothpaste. She's a large, feral cat and hates being held or picked up.
Kiwi is adorable! Thank you for the video!
You're very welcome! We definitely agree about Kiwi 😊🐾
thank you for such a clear explanation this is the best one I have seen yet. I am now going to attempt it!

I recently found out my cat has gingivitis on her teeth so I started brushing with a small toothbrush, no toothpaste rn and I’ve been doing it almost everyday and she is extremely good she does not bite or fight me she just takes it and I’m very gentle and give her treats and love after she has started getting happy about it and is very good luckily we got to the gingivitis before it got bad so her teeth are very good at the moment but I’m open to any food tips or tips for brushing so if you have any please tell me I’m always open to suggestions and yes I will be getting the toothpaste soon (cat toothpaste btw)
How about cleaning inner side of the teeth? Is there an electric toothbrush for kittens?

Cheers!

Amazing! The earlier you can do it the better. Thanks for sharing Simone 😸🐾
@@HealthcareforPets Thank you. I agree. You're welcome. Thank you for posting this professional, informative and very helpful tutorial!!!
Can it ever be too late? Thankfully doesn't seem to be issues but I just hope brushing once a day from now is OK, what if there's decay or plaque already?
That was already my fist question. Because my new cat who’s 8 needs her teeth extracted in the summer time. So I want to be more careful with her.
Fantastic and good on you for giving it a go! They will surely benefit from this in the long run. All the best 😊🐾
0:36 being with my cat is already endangering my life
Is it ok to just brush the outside facing part of their teeth or do you need to brush the inside facing part too?
This is the most hardest thing on earth 🙄....

I use my cat in the bag the cat needs a restraint like that or a big towel but this bag is great it’s also a carrier and you use it for their meds that they all need eventually. My cat Apple gets his teeth brushed one to two times a day.

I just did the face and teeth rub on my cat and she really enjoyed it. I hope this means she'll like getting her teeth brush!

What toothpastes recommended????
Hey! I’m gonna get my first cats in about a month and I’m just wondering if u let the toothpaste be in the mouth after u brush them?
Yes, you must use cat toothpaste of course, but since cat toothpaste is an enzyme, rinsing it is actually NOT recommended (the longer the enzyme remains, the better)... I am not a vet, but that is my understanding based on research.
@@GearGuy ooh okey thanks a lot!
Hi Mahsa, great question! Yes make sure you use cat toothpaste, never human toothpaste as it's toxic to pets. Cat toothpaste is safe for them to swallow so it can remain in their mouth and disintegrate when need be.
