    Thank you Nino.
    I am already planning for my set, as a Christmas present to myself. Of course, I want mine in Z-mount. Coupled with a Z9, I think that would make me a very happy man at Christmas.
    Man-ALIVE, I can hardly wait.

    I wonder is Sony can pass along their breathing compensation tech from their G Master lenses to this set? Seems like the lens commutation is there? Great video btw!

      Maybe a simple firmware update can get it done. But they probably want to keep that edge to Sony branded lenses.

    Yeah, edge to edge sharpness on wides is always hard to get but, in my experience all of these new mirrorless designed lenses handle the issue wayyyyy better than any previous mount designs.

  • @fellowcitizen

    Curious shift to the Leica scale, though -- 24mm and 75mm instead of 25mm and 85mm.
    Great to see Zeiss active again.

    Your test chart result shows significantly less CA than CVP's. Is someone doing something wrong, or there's large sample variation within the same batch? Which is really bad too.

    • @fellowcitizen
      @fellowcitizen 5 месяцев назад

      The GFX mount is much longer than E/L/XF etc, so it's unlikely unless there is some kind of donut adaptor. They have such an adaptor for rangefinder lenses, but those lenses have tiny diameters compared with cine lenses.

    I suppose I am in a minority of DPs, but I’m super disappointed to see this move away from PL and EF to mirrorless mounts on cine lenses. Even on mirrorless mounted cinema cameras there is HUGE benefit to having the deeper flange distance to fit systems like the new Red eVND and the Revolva. We’ve widely sub T/2.0 primes with long flange mounts, so it’s not as if this is an excuse beyond it being earlier to design. It’s not like these released as a set of T/1.2 or sub T/1.0 lenses.

    • @DaCarnival
      @DaCarnival 5 месяцев назад

      Not an expert on lens design, but I believe the benefit of a short flange distance, is that the lenses can be made smaller in every dimension while maintaining the same F stop. I.e. the "same" basic design will get smaller when you adjust for the flange distance - so it makes sense that lens manufacturers take advantage of that.

    • @nickcarter7611
      @nickcarter7611 5 месяцев назад

      Im right there with you. I personally am not interested at all in any short flange mount lenses. I haven't seen them really be used primarily on larger budget sets. Its hard for me to picture an owner OP dropping 25k on a set of lenses and if the bigger sets just use PL then not sure where lenses like these and the new Cooke SP3s really fit in.

    • @CineD
      @CineD  5 месяцев назад +1

      Yes it's not impossible to make fast lenses with longer flange mounts, but it's much harder and will require more expensive constructions, resulting also in heavier lenses. I, too, thought like you but after getting their explanation I totally understand why they are going this way. And they haven't said anything, but don't forget that LPL is also a short flange mount, so maybe that can be a mount option for these lenses in the future too. Nino

      Considering the 26mm difference in flange depth between E-Mount and LPL-Mount, it looks like there just isn‘t enough room behind the Iris ring to fit an LPL mount. Taking the 35mm as an example: With the over all length of the lens being 89mm there is probably less then 15mm between the Iris Ring and the E-Mount flange. (Estimated by pictures shown on the Zeiss website) This would put the Iris Ring inside the LPL-Mount.

    I would rather Zeiss give us a different flavor for mirrorless rather than a clear inferior lenses to the supreme at a cheaper price point. Wish they did what they did with the Otus lenses and make it a cinema lens for mirrorless cameras. I understand they can't make this lens too good as it will cannibalize their Supreme Primes but at 20k for the set and have that amount of CA, it's kinda disappointing. The Cooke SP3 were much better but wish it was at T1.5.

  • @focuspulling
    @focuspulling 5 месяцев назад +3

    For the rest of WHO? A set costs $26k. Almost zero legit indies will buy this, unless they can expense it to some Wall Street-funded corporation.
    The somewhat lower price point of these will merely increase the profit margins of rental houses.

    Sorry but you can get way better optics for less money. Here you are getting mediocre lenses for a premium price. These lenses are Zeiss answer to all the Chinese cinema lenses you’ve seen lately.
