  • In today's Friday Facts post, the devs introduce a new and improved way to control Spidertrons via the RTS remote, some great blueprint quality of life improvements like better ways to align the grid, and also more ways you can use the pipette tool!
    Now I know that the RTS remote is a very weird name, and personally not a huge fan, but perhaps it indicates some great things we haven't seen yet, like new vehicles and ways to control more than just spidertrons!
    Let me know your thoughts down below!

    Factorio is a game in which you build and maintain factories.
    You will be mining resources, researching technologies, building infrastructure, automating production and fighting enemies. Use your imagination to design your factory, combine simple elements into ingenious structures, apply management skills to keep it working and finally protect it from the creatures who don't really like you.
    Join forces with other players in cooperative Multiplayer, create huge factories, collaborate and delegate tasks between you and your friends. Add mods to increase your enjoyment, from small tweak and helper mods to complete game overhauls, Factorio's ground-up Modding support has allowed content creators from around the world to design interesting and innovative features. While the core gameplay is in the form of the freeplay scenario, there are a range of interesting challenges in the form of the Scenario pack, available as free DLC. If you don't find any maps or scenarios you enjoy, you can create your own with the in-game Map Editor, place down entities, enemies, and terrain in any way you like, and even add your own custom script to make for interesting gameplay.

    BLUEPRINT ZOOM PLEASE! Got back into the game a month ago, realized this wasn't a feature, almost cried when I was editing a 4x4 chunk city block tile blueprint. Had to shave a single row off each edge. That. Was. Pain.

    Finding the offshore pump in the inventory has certainly been a struggle. An easy way to find them is to remember that they are next to electric mining drills.

    Another great recap, and some awesome QoL features. Im glad you went in on the "oddness" of it being called the RTS tool. Wube have been pretty good at having names that make sense, even changing the bulk inserter and stack inserter names for clarity. Theres no reason they would call it this for just the spidertron. And it MAKES SENSE. Flying to another planet just to take out a bug nest would be BS. And, both arty and the spidertron are ultra late game machines. I absolutely think were getting some lower tier RTS units, at the very least the ability to control our current vehicles but i bet more are coming. I wonder if its optimal to bring one of these units down to a new planet with you for protection.
    Either way, as an fan and RTS game dev I fully support this.

    I'm glad I'm not the only one who has to lock an inventory slot for offshore pumps because I cant find them! I try to pipette water about every other time I place a pump so very welcome change. I also second your request to zoom in on blueprints that would be great.

      I find it quite funny and interesting that the offshore pump seems so hard to find for a lot of people (including myself). Locking it to a toolbar slot is a good solution until 2.0 comes out!

    If we're getting an RTS-style feature through the remote, I can't wait to see what modders do with the (potential) framework.
    Could you imagine a Dune-like planet where you can't place miners but have to harvest "spice" out of the sand? And you have to defend against larger worms?

    FFF# 379 mentioned that remotes were going to be "abstract" items so they don't take up inventory slots (great!), but this says that can take up toolbar slots, which also seems good. But does that mean they have to be in toolbars now, or will there be some other way to access your collection of multi-colored remotes? (Not a fan of the RTS Tool name)

      "abstract" means 0 craft/create cost

    I noticed that the offshort pump placement shows which tiles are required to be water tiles (shortly after they placed the pump in the pipette video) or has that already been mentioned in an earlier FFF?

    Formations are "super easy, barely an inconvenience". Take notice that the when you click the lines showing where they will end up are all shown individually. That means all they have to do is apply a pattern to the destination of each of them so they arrive at the destination in the correct formation. What can be a bit clunky is all the user interfaces to deal with pattern creation and selection. Tons of different ways to do that. I'd bet they could pick ways that were a good balance between user control and user effort but I'm not exactly sure what they would pick.

    hidden in plain sight , the offshore water pump
    Why cannot I ever find it, is it mislabeled or misplaced or a forgot equipment use once until needed again.
    It should be called TOP “The other pump” or MOP "Magical other pump” .
    Personal I think Wube should research this, they may have by accident discovered a cloaking device.

    Zooming in on blueprints: please yes! It's not just a convenience, it's a basic accessibility feature. Factorio gets many UI things very right, but there's definitely room to improve on accessibility.

    Let's face it, Wube sucks at naming things. Are we going to have a Legendary RTS remote? But then, I don't think English is the first language of many of the team, so I'll cut them a lot of slack. The devs can call it whatever, some good slang name will emerge from the player base; it usually does.

    I just wish I could drive the car worth a damn, I've tried both the control options and nothing feels right for me.

    • @SkorjOlafsen
      @SkorjOlafsen 6 месяцев назад +1

      The car is a menace! (The tank too, but at least it's on-brand for the tank.) But what are the 2 control options you mention? I use the vehicle snap mod to stay on roads, but that's a bandaid for a broken system.

    • @mattschliemann9683
      @mattschliemann9683 6 месяцев назад +1

      @@SkorjOlafsen I've never actually even made a tank yet, someday I'll try one. I figured it would drive about the same, and I got to the spidertron so quick and I actually like it, and its ability to go over buildings and what not.
      If we go way back to the original Gran Theft Auto games, which was a top down driver. I couldn't drive worth a damn there either. Like my brain just can't seem to grip left and right changing as my vehicle drives forward and turning or however it is. I have the same problem with camera controls in third person games too, especially if there is no option to invert them separately. And some games, either option just never feels right to me. It's real funny to me.
      Ok so about the control options, keep in mind I play on the Nintendo Switch. In the settings menu in the "control" section. The first category there is "controller settings" has like vibration intensity, stick dead zone/sensitivity.
      Then "Vehicle Driving Mode" with Relative and Absolute as the two options. Switch might have a few different options but many are the same as PC, I'm pretty sure. Relative says "moving stick in direction makes vehicles automatically turn and accelerate to that side of the screen" and absolute says "moving stick up/down will make vehicle accelerate/brake. Moving stick left/right will make vehicle turn in that direction."
      Neither of these work for me. I can't even drive it straight and I do more dmg to the car and any buildings and walls I have built trying to drive, I choose to literally walk until I have spidertrons.
      I feel like maybe the braking doesn't work quite right or something. Just get too frustrated trying to get going/stop. I feel like "Relative" should work for me though.
      Hell even manually trying to get a train to move forward doesn't seem to work correctly a lot of the times. Sometimes holding one direction makes me go backwards. And then I'll try any other direction and it won't go the other way. Eventually it does but half the time I just say screw it and put it on auto. And it seems different every time, especially when the track is going a different direction.
      PS someday I'll get the game on PC when I actually own my own PC again.

    what im really missing in factorio is some sort of ghost items feature. So imagine if you could use a combinator to project a saturated belt of items

    • @SkorjOlafsen
      @SkorjOlafsen 6 месяцев назад

      At some point it just makes more sense to make a sandbox save with a creative mode mod to test stuff out, because there's only so much the dev team can do with visualizations. Imagine a mix of real and ghost items on a belt? Ghost fluids? Ghost items delivered by bots? Ghost manufacturing? Seems like a tall order.
