I love all their albums but their golden era was 1998 -2008. I cant get enough of that progressive, brutal, weird, melodic, psychedelic death metal sound. If you're interested there's another band called Be'Lakor who are also making a similar sound at the moment. Their album "Stones Reach" is a masterpiece!
I like how the intro is the most ominous piece I have ever heard, and then at 01:50 it has the most beautiful acoustic interlude followed by a riff at 02:30 that will make you headbang so hard your neck will fall off, and then some of the most intense demonic growls at 03:28 . Opeth are masters of layering music
The sigh of summer upon my return Fifteen alike since I was here Bathed in deep fog, blurring my trail Snuffing the first morning rays Weary from what might have been ages Still calm with my mind at peace Would I prosper or fall, Drain the past The lapse of the moment took its turn I was foul and tainted, Devoid of faith Wearing my death-mask at birth The hands of God, Decrepit and thin Cold caress and then nothing I was taken away from my plight A treason bestowed to the crowd Branded a jonah with fevered blood Ungodly freak, Defiler Pale touch, Writhing in the embers Damp mud burning in my eyes All the faces turned away And all would sneer at my demise Outcast with dogmas forged below Seared and beaten, Banished from where I was born No mercy would help me on my way In the pouring rain nothing is the same Vows in ashes I pledge myself to no-one Seethed and spiteful All shudder at the call of my name If you'll bear with me You'll fear of me There is no forgiveness in these eyes For any of you but one Dispel the mist for now Melinda is the reason why I've come She is waterdrops over the pyre A thistle in my hands Stained and torn, Aged and brown Virtuous shell with kindred innocence I awoke from the miasma Passing swiftly through the moor This is here, Waters stir And in the distance all that was lost If you'll bear with me You'll fear of me You'd never leave me to A fate with you
this song/album was my introduction to opeth. i started buying my dying bride and anathema albums and decided to check out everything else that was on peaceville. i was not ready for how awesome this album is when i was 14.
My point is that I think even now if I discovered this I would still be blown away. This is a standard for atmosphere. I typically listen to this record in mid-October and every time I hear it I hear new things and it blows me away.
Something wrong is happening in 5:08. Right channel becoming quieter in opposite to left one. And in 5:31 drummer's cymbals also fading away in right channel. This happening until to 5:43 and again rapidly fading... This is ruining listener's comfort.
headphones on as my mother in law walked passed the landing while i was growing along lmao! awkward breakfast the following morning to answer her question - Yes! I do denounce Jesus
Okey, so opeth is my favorite band, but ugh if i didn't wish for some ACTUAL remasters... These are still brickwalled, like the OG. They still make you turn down the volume on the quieter parts because the mastering is so loud, so those parts are as loud as the metal parts... They should do it like they did on pale communion tbh (talking about sound quality, not sound of the album) the mastering there is very good! Sorceress is too bassy imo
Still Life is that type of album that ages like Whiskey. Gets better the older it is. 1999-2003 Opeth will always be my favorite era.
1988-2001 for me. Those three albums were like a 21 year old Glengoyne. Give them enough time and you shall be rewarded.
Straight the fuck up; and the embodiment of that sentiment is at 7:21 and onward

1996-2008 for me

ooh yeah!
and then 4:27 such a beautiful evil lead melody accompanying all the heavy madness
Don't go wasting your emotion,
Lay all your love on me.
Mikael once danced with Agneta ("the dancing queen") from ABBA.
ahhn yes i noticed it yoo
Holy shit
Timeless classic, will never get old
man, this is the best death metal ive heard. definitely adding some opeth to my playlist.
One of my favorite songs from one of my favorite albums.
Still Life! Still my Favorite of all the Opeth Albums!
The sigh of summer upon my return
Fifteen alike since I was here
Bathed in deep fog, blurring my trail
Snuffing the first morning rays
Weary from what might have been ages
Still calm with my mind at peace
Would I prosper or fall, Drain the past
The lapse of the moment took its turn
I was foul and tainted, Devoid of faith
Wearing my death-mask at birth
The hands of God, Decrepit and thin
Cold caress and then nothing
I was taken away from my plight
A treason bestowed to the crowd
Branded a jonah with fevered blood
Ungodly freak, Defiler
Pale touch, Writhing in the embers
Damp mud burning in my eyes
All the faces turned away
And all would sneer at my demise
Outcast with dogmas forged below
Seared and beaten, Banished from where I was born
No mercy would help me on my way
In the pouring rain nothing is the same
Vows in ashes
I pledge myself to no-one
Seethed and spiteful
All shudder at the call of my name
If you'll bear with me
You'll fear of me
There is no forgiveness in these eyes
For any of you but one
Dispel the mist for now
Melinda is the reason why I've come
She is waterdrops over the pyre
A thistle in my hands
Stained and torn, Aged and brown
Virtuous shell with kindred innocence
I awoke from the miasma
Passing swiftly through the moor
This is here, Waters stir
And in the distance all that was lost
If you'll bear with me
You'll fear of me
You'd never leave me to
A fate with you

I discovered this record when I was 22 and it still felt like I was completely immersed into another world. The ambience is unreal on this record.
+Rohann van Rensburg it doesn't matter what age so long as you enjoy

@Bludy 893 That emoji at the end almost ruined the joke
@Ping Bong lmao
The riff transition at 7:48 is so fucking cool.
My neck hurts from headbanging... this song is too good for my health!
When classical composition and metal smush parts and make an epic baby.
Yeah, now that I think about it….
Still Life is a really great album
Not just great but VERY GRRRREAT👌🤘
this one is a better quality that many others
God I love that intro...
I love Opeth. The Opening of this song reminds me of Pokemon XD Gale Of Darkness. At the cemetery.
ITS EPIC AMAZING
Best !
14 and listening to Opeth
Now you're 16. Still listening?
@@markblaauw4961 He... Will return....
Same
older opeth is something else
3:26 that is an introduction
Tampon burning in my eyes
And Mirror B.
Something wrong is happening in 5:08. Right channel becoming quieter in opposite to left one. And in 5:31 drummer's cymbals also fading away in right channel. This happening until to 5:43 and again rapidly fading... This is ruining listener's comfort.
Yeahh it disturbed me as well, thought i was the only one
The issue is also present in the original recording, but because the mastering here is louder it became more pronounced.
Wonder if the guitar is downtuned. I hear some d notes
yeah down tuned you do hear the d string good ear you have😃 peace to you
the song isnt down tuned
some parts are pretty heavily based in D minor though
Opeth can make E standard sounds like drop B
headphones on as my mother in law walked passed the landing while i was growing along lmao!
awkward breakfast the following morning
to answer her question - Yes! I do denounce Jesus
Do you abjure the Christian faith
no wonder people hate metal.
Still life. The only Opeth album you need.
Not really..
DukeofHazard11 Yea i agree, i mean Deliverance, Black water park, Ghost reveries...so yea lol
William Clarke while I agree that this album is great , I have to disagree. There are many great opeth albums :).
I need all of Opeth’s albums
The only one we deserve, but not the only one we need

It sounds fine to me.
Yeah Pale Communion has beautiful mastering.
They're are still mixing problems on their latest album tbh.
@@Heatwave9000 i agree. Except for on Pale Communion and Heritage, i like the production there
bro she's not thinking about you
Bruh....
Bruh...
Song makes me feel like a Viking
I love Opeth and this song, but the sound dropouts in this track is hard to ignore. It ruined this track.
Still life is their only good one
fuck off, all of their albums are good. just because they are not death metal does not mean they aren't good.
-Uɴᴅᴇᴀᴅ Cʜᴀɴɴᴇʟ- Yeah this guy is probably a metal elitist
@@Celatra fuck off still life is their only good album
@@T0mat0_S0up you sound like the kettle guess I'm the pot
Frig Off You haven’t even heard my voice yet. Blackwater Park, Ghost Reveries, Damnation, and Deliverance are fantastic albums.
