Jazz at the Philharmonic, or JATP, (1944--1983) was the title of a series of jazz concerts, tours and recordings produced by Norman Granz.
Over the years, Jazz at the Philharmonic featured many of the era's preeminent musicians, including Louie Bellson, Ray Brown, Benny Carter, Nat "King" Cole, Sonny Criss, Buddy DeFranco, Harry "Sweets" Edison, Roy Eldridge, Herb Ellis, Ella Fitzgerald, Stan Getz, Dizzy Gillespie, Lionel Hampton, Bill Harris, Coleman Hawkins, J.C. Heard, Billie Holiday, Helen Humes, The Modern Jazz Quartet, Illinois Jacquet, J. J. Johnson, Hank Jones, Jo Jones, Barney Kessel, Kenny Kersey, Gene Krupa, Lou Levy, Meade Lux Lewis, Shelly Manne, Fats Navarro, Charlie Parker, Oscar Peterson, Flip Phillips, Buddy Rich, Charlie Shavers, Willie Smith, Sonny Stitt, Slim Gaillard, Clark Terry, Tommy Turk, T-Bone Walker, Ben Webster, Lee Young and Lester Young.
Jo Jones, AWESOME! Thank you Norman Granz!!!
This guy would kick your ass into pudding without breaking a sweat and do it: in time, with a swing, not missing a beat.
TFW a jazz legend flams your face with his fists in 7/8, and you hear the tune straight into the afterlfe.
Illinois ,killing it here! And Jo Jones!!
They talk about Krupa and Rich, but Jo Jones and Morello were the tasties drummers of that era!!
superbe !!!!!!!
ALL☆☆☆☆☆s Jo Jones WOW!
A nitpick for historian-types.....the banner behind Jo adverts a show on Thursday October 7. The only corresponding year in the 50's would have been 1954.
And for Monk fans - I have a autographed JATP handbill that documents he played both the opening and closing sets at a show in San Diego likely in 1956. Others on the program included Eldridge and Hawkins as well as Meade Lux Lewis (!) doing the 4th set solo. Would love to hear from anyone with details from that show.
Those JATP were so exciting at Carnegie Hall when I was teenager in the last highest row off seats. People would get excited pre rock and roll! The Oscarer Peterson trio could swing like crazy with Ray Brown and Herb Ellis, without a drummer, you had to pat your foot!
Dit was een gouden tijd !!!!!!!! Super. Kippenvel !!!!!!!, zonder drugs of alcohol Eindeloos !!
Love the C Jam Blues "tune" Just an excuse to jammmmmm!!!!!!!
man i am not sure who was more bad ass.... Eldridge or Jones?? Dynomite!!!!!
You know you are great when Nat King Cole is reduced to being your sign off announcer!
Papa Jo Jones for the win
29dave alle Musiker die hier aufspielen sind super, sensationell und jeder für sich unerreicht, eben Musiker wo ich es unnötig finde irgend einen vor dem anderen zu heben. L.g Christian.
Bass player is Ray Brown. One of the greatest.
I like Nat King Cole's speaking and singing voice.
Roy Eldridge at 1:38 !!!!
nice (karate) chops! :D
What is the name of the man introducing all the band members?
Norman Granz.
