Top job for a beginner. For the runs get a razor blade and stand it on it's edge then hold it with 2 fingers firmly and slid it left to right, that will take of the high spots down to the flat surface ;) no need to force the blade downwards just take ya time and you will get it ;)

Look mate, as a painter of 20 years for your first job, well done. You will always get some peel unless you're a professional and you flow coat. But with 4 coats of clear it gives u a buffer to cut and polish and bring it up to where u want it. If those lower guards are a bit too peely hit it with 1200 then 1500 then 2000 then 3000 and youll be right. Buffing is the nxt challenge. The rest of the car should be right to start with 1500 then the rest. Look into juice polishes. Very user friendly. Cut and polish, swirl removal, final glaze. Good work.
Thnaks mate, appreciater the feedback and it puts my midn at rest to know the peel is fixable. What sand paper do you recommend, the 3M trizact system of papers for the DA? I was looking at 1500 then 3000 grit then to use the 3M 1,2,3 cut to polish system. I had a DA machine i just purchased for the cutting and polishing with the 3 types of german pads etc I was going to use the DA for the sanding, taking it very easy of course and practising first on the tailgate as that needs to be redone anyway. I know DA is a little riskier than by hand sanding but seems to give amuch better faster result.
@@BarnesysBuilds I would hand soft block 800 wet for the lower half of the side panels then 1200 over that and the rest of the sides. Then break out the DA with trizact 1500 all over then 2000 then 3000 Cut and polishing is an art so take your time with it. Its easy to stuff up. I also only use rotary polishers but their a lot harder too use. Good luck.
Great job mate - you must be well pleased to finally be at this stage. I know some others have mentioned it already but, it bears repeating... even the very best painters get runs - same with orange peel. Razor blade and a small hard rubber block should see you right. If it were me I would let it cure for a week or so then hit it with 800 on the DA with an interface pad then lay down a few flow coats - that'll give you plenty to work with when it's time to buff and polish and you'll get a nice deep shine. Congrats on getting over this hurdle.

I am just going to wet sand and buff what is on there and be happy with that i reckon. Plus the weather is cold now so to get another 18 degree day any time soon is going to be non exsistent. I can understand not wanting to mask up again, it's a real ballache, especially when all you want is to admire the glorious shiny new paint. Do you have any spare panels or similar you can paint to match the ute? It might be good to have something to practice your wet sanding and buffing before you start the real thing - panel lines and edges mate, so easy to blow through and such an PITA to have to redo. I have been using a fast drying clear from a company here called Tamco - 30 minutes and it's safe from debris and bugs. I wonder if there's anything similar down under? Good on ya - it's been a great journey and I 'm looking forward to the next installment.
I do have the tailgate still which needs to be sanded back and repainted due to the moth so i have practised wet sanding 1500 on that to remove the orange peel with success. I will contirue practising on that and go all the way to 3000 grit then cutting compound then polish to see how it comes out. That tailgate only had 2 coats on it so if i don't blow through on that then i should be in safe hands with the 4 coats. I was wondering if 4 coats was going to be overkill and potentially cuase hazing but looks like i got away with it. The tech sheet says 2-3 coats, i did give it a good 15-20 minutes to flash off each coat though which may have saved me as the paint seems nice and glossy. The Roberlo 150 HS clear is the one i used and that is the same drying time, 30 mins out the booth, so i reckon thats why i didn't get a lot of shit in the paint. Considering i had the booth walls caked in primer still it's amazing i didn't get more.

The gunman has some great video's on removing runs in clear using body filler and wet sanding and polishing. It has been great to watch you progress and humbly learn as you go. So rewarding to watch mate, my hat's off to you for doing the gapping. A lot of people go to all the trouble of rebuilding these utes but don't address those horrendous gaps. It makes a huge difference. That colour is so good. It's possibly slightly browner than mine will be, in about 10 years 🤣 It's going to look so good with all your chrome back on. Congratulations.
Thanks Ray, yes I'm hoping the doors go on the same way again, I will load up the protective tape before hand on all the edges and paint and should be right. Yeah I agree it does look darker brown than the inner guards outside the booth and slightly more silver inside the booth. It really is shaped by the environment so it may take on another tone when I full sun, which is what I'm expecting, that real silver bronze will start coming through. Yeah definitely, one little mistake like flicking the hose mid way through the metallic to hit a panel, or a drip of sweat landing on a panel, or the gun pot dribbling. Heaps of things can go wrong that will force a respray and a managed to dodge them all luckily! Cheers
Hey mate, so you've got heaps of clear there for you to block down the whole car and eliminate all the orange peel and get a smooth glassy finish. Wet sand it starting with 1500 and then 2000 and up to 3000 - 3500 and buff it to a glassy finish all over. When you say you held the gun 2 inches from the panel that isn't how spray guns work, you have to move back to about 6 inches or so to give the fluid room enough to atomize and reach full fan width. Leave it for a couple of weeks before you start with the blocking. I agree it pays to be able to paint with both hands to reach the hard to get to parts, like everything it comes with practice, keep it up man your on the home straight now. The sides look dead straight man, fuckin good job mate, now the doors and front panels eh. I hope I've been of some help with advice over the last few years. Cheers mate 👍
Thanks mate, yes I was going to go down that path with the sanding, any recommendations on sanding pads? I was going to use 3M on the DA or do you recommend doing by hand? Will take forever and won't be as smooth I reckon by hand. Yes you definitely helped mate I applied a lot of your recommendations which definitely helped get me get the ute to where it's at. Really appreciate the feedback and help. Yeah I guess it wasn't two inches, about a fist away from the surface, it got the smoothest results so I guess whatever works! I found the further away the more peely it got. I reckon that clear isn't the easiest to apply, seems to be not very forgiving
depending on where your located i offer to come remove the runs for you. but if your wanting to do it your self . stay away from a tungsten if you've never used one before . but use a razor blade and mask each side of the blade . keep it flat and use single motion passes over the high areas . then use 1000 1500 2000 then 3000 grit wet to sand the area. then a cutting compound and wool pad to polish the sanding scratches .great work mate

The body work and primer stages was enough for me plus if I sand it again at home I reckon I'll be up for divorce haha. I got taken for a spin one last weekend with a 355 stroker with 560hp. Can't wait to get it all going. That's got me pumped now too. Good luck with the rest of it bud. Keen to see the end result.

Well done Barnesy, it looks good. The preparation work has paid off big time. For a first job it is excellent. There is no doubt you need to be ambidextrous to use a spray gun and have a good memory to remember where you have been with it. I like those wheels, they are classic period correct WB, but I’m an old fart. Don’t like the tyres though, been there with them. Jeff
Thanks Jeff, yeah I love the old dragway as well but unfortunately they are too far gone and need an overhaul, rechrome new centre's etc, I would prefer to spend the money and get some new different style wheels for this build however. Verdict is still out on what wheels!
Only got into your build a few days ago and the paint looks beautiful. I have a 4x4 I’m still getting to how I want. I’d love to get into a kingswood Ute build some day and you definitely have given me inspiration and I’m sold once the bt-50 is done I’ll be searching for a Holden to work on
I heard a few methods, 240 seems aggressive compared to the others. I think 600 was the lowest someone said they would go or use either the polyglaze method with 300 and or a tungsten block to shave them off. Etc

Im from south Africa and Ive got the same ute like jours.only we call it a Chevy elcamino.im alsow busy repainting it.i had the same enjine problems jou gad.put a new can and lifters in it,and during run in time the cam and lifters broke the same way as jours,so we came to the conclusion that the oul chanels is blocked.so I fixed a nother enjine 350 with camel heads
Good job mate, those little runs are nothing to worry about, you can block them out with 1500. You can get a tungsten block and knock them down but wait a few weeks until is hard. You can never completely eliminate orange peel so don't be hard on yourself man I reckon you smashed it. What wheels are you looking at? 🇭🇲👍
Well done Barnesy been watching from the start. All tht hard work has payed off, its gona look a millon bucks when u finish the paint. And its going to sound the part to with tht engine.

Thankyou, I think in order to make the booth perform more like a professional booth I would have a minimum of two fans from the beginning, the orange (Detroit fans) and have them at the base of the booth externally so as only the front is in an opening in the booth. I think this creates a greater vacuum due to only having one point of flow as compared to the box which had 3. I would also box the room with wooden studs so as to staple the builders plastic down for a better stronger seal. I have had no end of dramas with the tape slowly peeling off and have redone at least 3 times. The plastic is a great method as it attracts the particles as well. Finally I would increase the inflow filter area by 3 times at least, this would allow a greater draft of air to flow over the booth and down to the outlets removing particles faster. I would also place lights at the base of the booth on the wooden studs and at the top, powerful LEDS to give more light. Without even coverage once overspray starts it makes it very hard to see if you don't have good even lights. And that's it, a lot but not much extra effort if your going to do it anyway. Cheers

@@BarnesysBuilds I have just completed a HX Panel Van build with a 355 like yours, not a sandman but built to look like one, has a Turbo 400 and 9inch diff, with a electronic fuel injection carburetor.
@@waynegoodwin3217 nice, did you go the Holley Sniper? I'm just about to revisit my petrol tank as I am learning that the 5/16 fuel line isn't big enough and I will need to plumb a 3/8 line with an electric pump. I was going to go the returnless Holley in tank retro pump. It's not EFI ready though so if I ever did want to upgrade the Carby I would need to do the pump again as well. The aeromotive in tank does both but comes in at $1000.
@@BarnesysBuilds I originally had a holly 650 double pumper but it was a shit to start, never ever look back once I installed the Fitech, I don't have a fuel pump in the tank it's a separate force fuel system so connects to the original fuel pump and uses the original carbon filter return line to the tank.
Thanks mate, yeah the meth lab worked a treat with two fans, it had so much draw I had to tape the walls back from sucking in on the ute. I reckon that's one of the reasons it came out the way it did. The light conditions were not great though, made it super hard to see quarters low down along sills but managed to get there. Yeah can't wait for the engine as well

1 way of sorting the runs out, is to use body bog around the runs & then sand it out.

Hey mate, so you've got heaps of clear there for you to block down the whole car and eliminate all the orange peel and get a smooth glassy finish. Wet sand it starting with 1500 and then 2000 and up to 3000 - 3500 and buff it to a glassy finish all over. When you say you held the gun 2 inches from the panel that isn't how spray guns work, you have to move back to about 6 inches or so to give the fluid room enough to atomize and reach full fan width. Leave it for a couple of weeks before you start with the blocking. I agree it pays to be able to paint with both hands to reach the hard to get to parts, like everything it comes with practice, keep it up man your on the home straight now. The sides look dead straight man, fuckin good job mate, now the doors and front panels eh. I hope I've been of some help with advice over the last few years. Cheers mate 👍
Thanks mate, yes I was going to go down that path with the sanding, any recommendations on sanding pads? I was going to use 3M on the DA or do you recommend doing by hand? Will take forever and won't be as smooth I reckon by hand. Yes you definitely helped mate I applied a lot of your recommendations which definitely helped get me get the ute to where it's at. Really appreciate the feedback and help. Yeah I guess it wasn't two inches, about a fist away from the surface, it got the smoothest results so I guess whatever works! I found the further away the more peely it got. I reckon that clear isn't the easiest to apply, seems to be not very forgiving

depending on where your located i offer to come remove the runs for you. but if your wanting to do it your self . stay away from a tungsten if you've never used one before . but use a razor blade and mask each side of the blade . keep it flat and use single motion passes over the high areas . then use 1000 1500 2000 then 3000 grit wet to sand the area. then a cutting compound and wool pad to polish the sanding scratches .great work mate

I'm building an SLR 5000 replica.
I'm nearly at final paint stage but I've decided not to take it on.
The body work and primer stages was enough for me plus if I sand it again at home I reckon I'll be up for divorce haha.
I got taken for a spin one last weekend with a 355 stroker with 560hp.
Can't wait to get it all going.
That's got me pumped now too.

Well done Barnesy, it looks good. The preparation work has paid off big time. For a first job it is excellent. There is no doubt you need to be ambidextrous to use a spray gun and have a good memory to remember where you have been with it. I like those wheels, they are classic period correct WB, but I’m an old fart. Don’t like the tyres though, been there with them. Jeff
Thanks Jeff, yeah I love the old dragway as well but unfortunately they are too far gone and need an overhaul, rechrome new centre's etc, I would prefer to spend the money and get some new different style wheels for this build however. Verdict is still out on what wheels!

Sand the runs on the firewall out starting with P240 then go up grades to about P1200. Looks great though.
I heard a few methods, 240 seems aggressive compared to the others. I think 600 was the lowest someone said they would go or use either the polyglaze method with 300 and or a tungsten block to shave them off. Etc

Im from south Africa and Ive got the same ute like jours.only we call it a Chevy elcamino.im alsow busy repainting it.i had the same enjine problems jou gad.put a new can and lifters in it,and during run in time the cam and lifters broke the same way as jours,so we came to the conclusion that the oul chanels is blocked.so I fixed a nother enjine 350 with camel heads
I have seen the elcamino which I think was a HQ model from memory. Oil mods were done to the block to make sure the oil gets to the cylinders faster.
Good job mate, those little runs are nothing to worry about, you can block them out with 1500. You can get a tungsten block and knock them down but wait a few weeks until is hard. You can never completely eliminate orange peel so don't be hard on yourself man I reckon you smashed it. What wheels are you looking at?

Fantastic result, great to see, and whilst I'm in the early stages of doing similar with a hq ute, encouraged by your outcome, giving me hope to keep chipping away.
Curious about the booth at this point, given the time and conditions, can I ask what you would possibly do differently in hindsight?

Thankyou, I think in order to make the booth perform more like a professional booth I would have a minimum of two fans from the beginning, the orange (Detroit fans) and have them at the base of the booth externally so as only the front is in an opening in the booth. I think this creates a greater vacuum due to only having one point of flow as compared to the box which had 3. I would also box the room with wooden studs so as to staple the builders plastic down for a better stronger seal. I have had no end of dramas with the tape slowly peeling off and have redone at least 3 times.
The plastic is a great method as it attracts the particles as well.
Finally I would increase the inflow filter area by 3 times at least, this would allow a greater draft of air to flow over the booth and down to the outlets removing particles faster. I would also place lights at the base of the booth on the wooden studs and at the top, powerful LEDS to give more light. Without even coverage once overspray starts it makes it very hard to see if you don't have good even lights. And that's it, a lot but not much extra effort if your going to do it anyway. Cheers

Yeah sure, you can grab them off ebay, they are commonly used to heat caravans and camper trailers etc, really basic, pretty cheap, around $170

@@BarnesysBuilds I have just completed a HX Panel Van build with a 355 like yours, not a sandman but built to look like one, has a Turbo 400 and 9inch diff, with a electronic fuel injection carburetor.
@@waynegoodwin3217 nice, did you go the Holley Sniper? I'm just about to revisit my petrol tank as I am learning that the 5/16 fuel line isn't big enough and I will need to plumb a 3/8 line with an electric pump. I was going to go the returnless Holley in tank retro pump. It's not EFI ready though so if I ever did want to upgrade the Carby I would need to do the pump again as well. The aeromotive in tank does both but comes in at $1000.

@@BarnesysBuilds I originally had a holly 650 double pumper but it was a shit to start, never ever look back once I installed the Fitech, I don't have a fuel pump in the tank it's a separate force fuel system so connects to the original fuel pump and uses the original carbon filter return line to the tank.

Thanks mate, yeah the meth lab worked a treat with two fans, it had so much draw I had to tape the walls back from sucking in on the ute. I reckon that's one of the reasons it came out the way it did. The light conditions were not great though, made it super hard to see quarters low down along sills but managed to get there. Yeah can't wait for the engine as well

Yeah two fans transformed the whole booth, it hardly had any over spray after I added that second one
