The song is sung from the perspective a freedom fighter from the 1910 Mexican Revolution reminiscing in old age with his fellow fighter Fernando.
You can't go wrong with ABBA. They are and will always remain timeless!! Love their music!!
I'm with Sam, how do you rank ABBA songs? It's like being asked which mouthful of a delicious dessert was your favourite.
Yes, please.
Chiquitita is a valid answer to both questions
ABBA always reminds me of being stationed in Germany back in the 70's. They always played ABBA at the outdoor skating in the winter. Oh to be young again.
I gotta admit. Got Abba's greatest hits. Pretty strong!
How ABBA came up with a song about the Mexican Revolution, shows how worldly they are. It also has a yearning aspect to older people(like me) reminiscing to their youth
A great song. Did you know this was actually written for Frida the auburn haired girl on her great solo album called "Frida Ensam" she sang it in Swedish. It was a huge hit all over Europe. She was a great solo artist. They redid it in English for ABBA and it was a hit again.
And in Spanish.
Fernando started off as a Frida solo which then became a huge hit for Abba. Interestingly I think this is the ONLY Abba song where Agnetha harmonises with Frida during the verse where her vocal is in a lower register than Fridas - Agnetha would normally harmonise above Fridas vocal.
Fernando is Chiquititas long lost brother. ABBA is well respected in the rock and metal community, they're the ultimate pop group!
This is their best selling single with about ten million copies sold. Even more than Dancing Queen.
A huge hit from them. I have over 70 ABBA songs in my library. I've loved them since '76 or so when I first heard "SOS" on the radio. They are the sound of joy to me. I could sing along with them all day and not tire. Two of their best songs were not big hits, but I recommend them: "One Man, One Woman" and "Move On."
The Rio Grande river is the border between the US and Mexico.
You should react to "I Still Have Faith In You" from a couple years back. They got together after 39 years (all in their 70's) to do an ablum during look-down. They can still do it. And it's been checked no auto-tune to speak of was used. Just four very talented people.
The Rio Grande: In the United States, it flows through Colorado, New Mexico and Texas. In Mexico, the basin spans across Durango, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo Leon and Tamaulipas. The river serves as a critical wildlife corridor, and is home to a wide diversity of plants and vegetation.
Originally this song belongs to Frida❤'s solo career...
Agnetha🩷 does the low harmony (when the girls sing together, they usually do it backwards).
❤️🇨🇱🤗👍
One of my top Abba songs for sure. 'Knowing Me, Knowing You from 1977 is also up there. Check it out. Cheers.'
My favorite ABBA song. It showcases gorgeous Frida and her beautiful voice.
I love this one. Also I do, I do, I do, I do, I do.
"I like ABBA...I did then and I didn't admit it. The snobbery of the time wouldn't allow it. I did admit it when I heard 'FERNANDO"'; I could not bear to keep the secret to myself anymore and also because I think there is a difference between Swedish sentimentality and LA sentimentality because the Swedish are so restrained emotionally. When they get sentimental it's rather sweet and charming. What we really got me with "Fernando" was what the lower singer was doing/
I spent months trying to learn that. It's so obscure what she's doing and very hard to sing. And then from being a sceptic I went over the top in the other direction. I really fell for them."' -BRIAN ENO,The Guardian 2010.
Great reaction! we need ABBA ✨live✨ I think you will enjoy everyone's energy!
We had excellent productions in the 70's guys. I know i was in my 20s then and I saw it all around me.
In the '60s also, the Beatles with George Martin, the Beach Boys with Brian Wilson the 70s took their cue from them and other innovative producers...
Rio Grande River - border of texas and mexico. It is time to react to "I Still Have Faith In You". After forty years ABBA released this song. It is a ballad / Anthem of their relationship and music through the good times and trials. I Still Have Faith in You was the first ABBA song to be nominated for a grammy. The video is a montage of past photos and videos ending in the technological marvel of the ABBAtars. (digital recreations of Abba in the 70's. finishing the song. Fantastic. What is even more amazing is their voices at over 70 years of age. The young bucks can't beat them. Please, React to this great song. .
This song was re-recorded in Spainish along with 9 other songs for an album release in Spainish speaking countries though I and many others bought it in non Spainish speaking countries. This song was re-released and went to no.1 again in many South American countries and Mexico.
Just reminds me how good ABBA was. One of the many super groups that emerged from our generation.
The first vinyl I ever got was a 45 RPM single of their first hit, SOS. So I will always be extremely partial to it, even though that initial vinyl was at a yard sale across the street.
The pile of singles didn't have sleeves at all and they were just jumbled in there and very well worn, and each one had a little piece of brown masking tape on ii where the price of one cent was written on it. I put this song as loud as my record player would go, this was before stereo systems, and play it over and over and over again, and I figured out how to play the keyboard part on the piano and so forth. I still love that song so much. I hope you end up reacting to SOS at some point.
And the other single I bought that afternoon in 4th grade at the yard sale across the street? Yellow Submarine by the Beatles. As kids on the playground, we had all memorized the words and would sing it. But I was absolutely fascinated with this creepy dark song on the other side, listening even through all the scratches on the record, Eleanor Rigby. Wow.
so happy to see you again with ABBA songs
"Fernando" (1976)
is a soft ballad, so nice and beautiful
The best is the beauty of their vocal harmonies, very soft at the whisper level but at a level of perfection, that explodes in a magic chorus
I have compared it to "Chiquitita" (1979) because both songs have similarities and contrasts
Both have the title in Spanish, and was recorded in spanish too (to the album in spanish "Gracias por la Música" In 1980)
Both are pop ballads with an initial verse sung alone and from the second chorus in duet, with a very catchy and popular chorus (in my country Argentina are songs that we would sing in a circle of friends, because we all know their lyrics)
The two videos show the contrast of fire and snow, night and day
They were both very most worldwide successful, only behind "Dancing Queen"
ABBA had already recorded "Dancing Queen" and it came from the success of "Mamma Mía"
It was the manager who convinced them to record "Fernando" so as not to repeat the style
(Frida had done it before in 1975 on her solo album in Swedish and it was a success, but with lyrics of a lovesong, and these to ABBA is a friendship story about mexican soldiers)
The manager was right and everything was a success, one after another in that year 1976,
with three singles #1 consecutives in UK
Mamma Mía (2 weeks)
Fernando (4 weeks)
Dancing Queen (6 weeks)
In addition, this variety of options had different results in each country.
"Fernando" was a colossal success in Australia (14 weeks at #1 surpassed the "Hey Jude" mark) and 7 weeks at #1 in Germany
"Dancing Queen" was 14 weeks #1 in Sweden and 6 weeks #1 in the U.K.and 8 weeks #1 in Australia
Both were #1 in the U.S. but in various rankings: "Dancing Queen" on the Billboard and
"Fernando" on Adult Contemporary
The official video of "Fernando" was filmed in February 1976, with Dancing Queen the next day
in these Official Video you could see:
Bjorn & Benny, both in guitars
Frida & Agnetha confronted both in frontal and profile images (repeating "Mamma Mia" technique used) premiering her gypsy style dress
and a last comparation
"Fernando" (1976) is first ABBA single with Frida in lead voice, and recorded in her solo album in Swedish (released before ABBA)
as "S.O.S." (1975) is first ABBA single with Agnetha in lead voice, and recorded in her solo album in Swedish (released after ABBA)
That is why my next suggestion is to react
"S.O.S." (1974/1975)
the second worldwide hit to ABBA
first of 18 singles Top10 consecutives to ABBA in UK
Thanks so much for these video and reaction
I wish you a great weekend
See you in the next
My best regards from

That’s how we did it in the 70’s! We were ahead of our time! That’s why our music has lasted this long…classics!!!
I am now in my early 50s, and I remember back almost exactly 30 years ago when I was in my early 20s; and I felt the need to hide it from my friends when I bought my first ABBA cassette tape. Now I don't care who knows it that I listen to ABBA.
The origin of this song wasn’t sung by ABBA…but it was introduced by Frida (dark hair) on her solo album a few month before it became a single on ABBA’s next album…..this song also was also included on ABBA’s Gracias Por La Musica the lyrics were translated in Spanish
Always a treat to watch you two and your reactions !
👍👍👍💕🇸🇪😎
Sam is enjoying her partners song Philnando It's amazing that they also sing this in Spanish. The Rio Grande is on the border with U.S. and Mexico. The whole Southern border of Texas follows the Rio Grande.
If y’all haven’t yet, you need to watch the movie, MAMA MIA. MURIEL’s WEDDING is another movie, which is set in Australia and is centered around Muriel who is obsessed with ABBA.
Out of all of their wonderful songs, this has always been my favorite!
Have you reacted to "Eagle" by ABBA yet? It's a great alternative sound from the group that really highlights their vocals! Love your reactions! Ed.
These ladies blew me away as a teenager!
We are talking about a classic '70s solid 10 million seller single! And this is one of ......Bryan Eno's fave Abba songs as he had confessed on an emotional interview about his secret Abba love, years ago.Cher also did a very decent cover in the Soundtrack of the Mamma Mia 2 (2018).
I love this song and is in my top 5. I have a Dream is my #1. I really can't think of anyone else that has the fabulous harmonies that ABBA has. Thanks for the reaction.❤
Someone already commented where the Rio Grande is, so I'll just add that in Mexico, it's called "Río Bravo". North of the border it's the "Río Grande". Cheers y saludos!
One of my top 3 ABBA songs, though they change all the time. Thanks guys, another awesome review! Love from Canada!
This song was released in 1976. I have an uncle Fernando who lived in Italy. When he came to America to visit us in the summer of 1977, we played the song for him and my grandfather translated for him. Brought tears to his eyes. PS-the day we were taking him to the airport to return to Italy was the day Elvis died.
This was a huuuuuuuge hit in UK and all over Europe.
Also Australia- no1 singles chart for 14 weeks beating the Beatles "Hey Jude" record for more weeks at no1 (13 weeks).ABBA held this record for over 4 decades untill 2017 who got overtaken by Ed Sheeran's multi-streamed 'Shape of you" (15 weeks).
A great song. I have no idea but I do believe this is about the Spanish civil war.
But the production of all ABBA songs are amazing for the age. As someone else said: "They don't sound like the 80's, they made the 80's sound like them."
If you read books, I would also recommend "The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared". A Swedish Forest Gump.
Not the Spanish civil war but the Mexican Revolution.
Rio Grand is a river separating Mexico and the US
Rio Grande
Thank you! This is my favorite ABBA song and almost no one reacts to it.
I haven't seen anyone mention the "Third voice"! When Frida and Agnetha's voices combine in harmony they make the famous "Third voice" of the ABBA sound. Listen to them again and listen for it. The two of them together make an amazing voice. ( Now you'll always listen for it in every ABBA song ) ❤
♥ ABBA!
The song Waterloo is not really about war. The Battle of Waterloo is where Napoleon met his defeat. So when someone faces their Waterloo it means they are facing defeat. In the context of the song it’s about someone surrendering to the love of another.
Super Trouper! Please and thank you.
There are so many more great songs by them.
set in the snow, but they still manage to make you feel all warm...felt that when it came out too as a young man. . .
In 1980, they released an album in Spanish, called Gracias Por La Musica in Spain and in Latin America. It`s a different feeling listening to those familiar songs in Spanish, sounds really good. Please check the Spanish version of Chiquitita and Andante Andante. So beautiful.
Also, The Visitors and Soldiers in English.
Eagle is my favorite Abba song.
One of their best. You should give Soldiers a listen for another war themed ABBA song
Please do SLIPPING THRU MY FINGERS LIVE by ABBA and NAME OF THE GAME and THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC
This song always caught the emotion in the back of my throat and made my eyes glass with tears. It is the story of soldiers in the Spanish - Franco uprising fighting to release from brutal tyranny in Spain. You can guess I am a Boomer.
It's really amazing that we have videos of their hits from the 70's since music videos weren't a thing back then. The Rio Grande river forms the border between the United States and Mexico.
@@rayfaircloth8253 their videos were what were called promos for the album/song. There was no MTV then so ya ABBA was always ahead of their time. Be it music techno stuff, clothes, songs, promotions, etc.
You still have Soldiers and The visitor. ❤ and a lot more.
I was thinking the other day about ABBA for some reason. The 60's were owned by the Beatles. Nobody bigger. Then I thought about the 70's. I'd have to say ABBA was the biggest worldwide sensation. Other bands were big then, but ABBA was on the highest tier
This is my favorite band as a kid thier this song was written bye Frida and was going to go on a solo LP this the only Abba song to reach top 10 on American billboard
The song is not written by Frida, it's a cover from her Swedish solo version that was written by Stig Anderson. The English version was written by Björn. And by the way, Dancing Queen was a no. 1 hit in the US...
Fernando no1 on billboard adult contemporary chart@@Lisa-M
Think you guys would enjoy Eagle, but make sure its the near 6 minute version as the radio edit cuts the best bit imo.
"they did war themed songs?" em, lol their first biggest hit was Waterloo, the one that won eurovision and catapulted them to global fame, all about the battle of waterloo, when napoleon was finally defeated. love Fernando. such a great track.
Since you are almost complete ABBA's catalog, the next popular European bands you should check out are Modern Talking, New Order, and Depeche Mode. But before that you should check out a song by Joy titile "Touch By Touch" which was popular in Europe, Asia, and in underground parts of America.
"Whats The Name Of Game " , "Knowing Me Knowing You" , Eagle" "Hey Hey Helen " . Some ABBA suggestions. The last one is some of their hard rock.
It’s about the US invasion to Mexico when we lost 60% of our land . Even Irish soldiers helped us in that war , Saint Patrick’s batallion which stand as heroes for us still although it happened in 1846. Rio grande as the US call it or Rio Bravo for Latinamerica is the border of Mexico and the US. They are wearing typical outfits of Mexico for this video
Waterloo won the Eurovision Song Contest. It's what launched them to stardom.
Rio Grande, border between U.S. and Mexico.
they do a really nice version of this song sung in spanish. you should hear it.
Don’t be surprised by the 70’s. We had smart, talented people. I took my son to see “Jaws” in a movie theater and he was amazed a 1975 movie was in color and not black & white. Ugh. SMH.
Have you noticed in ABBA's videos that when they show the women singing at the same time, they project them at right angles.
Thanks gusy.. If you ever do Abbas "Eagle", please be sure to choose the original longer albumversion! And not the shorter us radio edit out there sometimes.
I see a comment below ascribes this song to the 1910 Mexican Revolution. I used to ascribe it to the Napleonic campaign of the Peninsula War in Spain and Portugal. Until it clicked that The Rio Grande is mentioned lol. Is there a 'Rio Grande' river in Spain/Portugal.
You should react to movies too. Check out 'The Gun ' starring Cary Grant and Frank Sinatra.
And the high pipes accompaniment reminds me of those from the Andes Mountains of South America. This is probably more for sonic flavoring as they reference crossing the Rio Grande between the United States (Texas) and Mexico. I am not aware of any significant Mexican military forces crossing north into Texas during the Mexican Revolution of 1910 - 1920, so the singer and titular Fernando could have been crossing south to support the revolutionary movement with U.S. backed forces led by Aureliano Blanquet.
Wikipedia, it's a wonderful thing.
FRIDA - " Twist At Night " (Official Video) // and ABBA - " Ring Ring (Video) Hi Bars & Barbells a quick note can you guys read the comments section all through the next day cause your videos don't show up until many many hours later and there's many of us giving you great song suggestions 👌 but our comments probably don't even get read because so much time has elapsed before we can watch your music reaction videos. Appreciate it
U should do Cher version of this song in Mamma Mia!! Here we Go Again!!
Actually, ABBA had a lot of big songs. They were one of the most successful groups that came out of Europe, ever.
The Rio Grande runs along the border between Mexico and the U.S.
The Rio Grande starts in the state of Colorado, goes south through New Mexico, and then forms the southern border of Texas before ending at the Gulf of Mexico.
Mmmmm a lot of comments I'm making on your channel. another thing you should react to is 'The Eurovision Song Contest'. Coincidentally where ABBA got their break when they won it in 1974 with Waterloo when it was staged in the English seaside resort of Brighton.
ABBA did some albums in Spanish. The girls didn't speak Spanish so they learned the songs phonetically. The girls did speak English
In the 1970’s they were bigger than Volvo.
To me what separates the great music artists from the more average ones is the ability to write songs with great melodies. Of course creative lyrics help a lot, but Abba is like the Beatles, Elton John, Stevie Wonder and other great artists. The melodies of the songs just make you feel really good.
I am shocked that they didn't know where the Rio Grande River is.
The prog movement of Sweden was especially angry with ABBA because they were commercial and not political. Funny how at the end of their carrier they produced quite a few edgy political songs. Try Soldiers, The Visitors, and even their final track, Ode to Freedom, all with heavy messages and great songs.
'Ode to Freedom" ! ...what an album closer! An anthemic little masterpiece.
1975 the swedish band; " hopla bandoola band made a hit " juanita", About tre spanish civil war.
NIGHTWISH - " NEMO " (Official Music Video) Original Vocalist TARJA from 2004.When are you guys coming back to Nightwish this time w/previous singer She's got a Incredible voice too and the music is Heavy Melodic Metal
i first saw abba on snl the out fits they were looked like they just stepped off the mothership iat first i thought it was a skit
They were conflicted whether to release this or Dancing Queen as their next single.
They decided on Fernando, which was a hit single... then here comes Dancing Queen.
Who can argue with that?
The other way, Fernando might not have hit is big as it did.
Emphasis on might not.
Rio Grande is the narrow shallow river that is the border between Texas and Mexico.
New Mexico and California.
They give me John Denver vibes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thx, but I find this chansong , even if there is originality in terms of timbres, with the panpipe, in particular, but they did so much better at the creative level, try, please, from Abba "the name of the game".
"Rock Me" from "ABBA The Movie" ruclips.net/video/8uzceymou84/видео.htmlfeature=shared
The studio version of this is too polished and too tight. It is short, only 2:25, but fun. Bjorn at his best I think.

That dark haired girl Anne-Frid Lyngstad are owed my grandpa several packs of cigarettes that she borrowed when they we're young in the same little village i live in now in Sweden 😎😀😀😀.
He used to say " that girl, she owes me alot of cigarettes " 😂😂😂
I read she was born in either Finland or Norway (I don’t remember), but had to leave because her father was a German soldier. She and her mother were ostracized, so they moved to Sweden.
I don't remember this scene from Midsommar, must be a special edition.
Sorry got my countries mixed up - this was Mexico not Spain
