Anyone who has experienced a serious hurricane, including myself won't ever do it again. Get away as fast as possible.
I he see you. I agree if you have the option to leave do so. Be safe than sorry you don’t want to lose your life over pride.
The only way or place I'll stay and ride out the hurricane is inside a tsunami pod, since it would protect me and whoever else is in there well from anything the hurricane may throw at it, especially flooding storm surges.

@@AquaTech225 I said serious hurricane,like Andrew that I rode out in homestead as a kid. The windows blew out and we hid in a closet. The whole town was destroyed. Cat 1 or 2 is not that bad unless you live in a flood prone area.
No doubt. You’re look at stupidity right here. That close to the land and they weren’t smart enough to dock, and take proper shelter.

That's a pretty intense video! A really good friend of mine rode out hurricane Katrina on his 37 foot sailboat. He started dragging, all the way across St Louis Bay, watching entire houses float by him and was just waiting to go ashore when all of a sudden his boat stopped. Turns out he got hooked on an old steel cable that had been laying on the bottom for who knows how long. But he said afterwards that you couldn't pay him enough money to ride another hurricane out on a boat.
Yeah that would have happened to them too if they were in fort Meyers.
I don't even want to be in Florida for the next one 😆

WOW ! I was under the steps in closet from 1pm-9pm … WITH bigger life jacket you had on TERRIFIED of all the sounds going on! After visiting DT Fort Myers last weekend & seeing those HUGE boats that were tossed like toys on shore … YOU were so lucky!

We have a very good mooring and we built a very strong boat! The boats in Fort Myers were carried up on shore during the storm surge and not tossed for the most part. But I did feel the boat lifting up when the winds picked up! Thank you for your comment ❤️

Thanks for this video. The lime green complex you were walking around is our place. This really bought home how scary it was. We didn't get to Englewood for a week, so it was cleaned up quite a lot by the time we got there. Glad ya'll were safe. Don't do that again :)

That storm was never ending. That must have felt like an eternity. I got tired of the noise for 6 hours straight and I was inside my house. Good job
That was the longest day of my life! We just sat there waiting for our mooring line to break all day but she held strong!

I really don’t understand why anyone knowing how big and bad that storm was , would put yourself in such a dangerous situation?, if you’d have sank or taken on water, no one was coming to help or rescue you ! You show us the destruction on the mainland it’s truly devastating to see, you definitely had a guardian angel looking over you that day

WOW...just wow....i live in Texas and have been through a lot of hurricanes...mostly we stayed...but i don't know if yall are brave or crazy or a bit of both... ;-) That was some intense video and my stomach was churning for you...i'm glad you survived. Storms are no joke...It is a good perspective you presented for those to see...only difference is the time that surely ticked by slowly for it to pass. glad you made it.

Lord have mercy, I wouldn’t even go outside my door in the breezeway in Punta Gorda! I only went out when the eye came over us, as soon as I felt a drop of rain and the first little bit of wind I ran back inside my hallway with my back up against the concrete wall! The sound was crazy and the pressure made the house feel like it was going to explode! God Bless you guys!

We didn't feel so brave when we were out there.......just so mad at ourselves for doing it in the first place. So many of my neighbors had it much scarier than we did and they were in their houses. Thank you for you comment!

Incredible footage. I've never experienced anything like that other than back in 2004 Hurricane Ivan. Living in Louisville, Ky at the time and we had sustained winds of 40+mph and gusts up to 70mph. We see some pretty nasty thunder storms but the sustained winds were absolutely unbelievable.
I can only imagine what it was like down in Florida.
To come in and see the damage would be heart breaking. You know now you can do this with other boats in a pile, on shore, and sinking. Boat is expensive but ypu did everything right. 👏

As someone that loves storms and rode out both Irma and Ian (both on land) I admit I'm a little jealous. I love the footage you were able to get and would absolutely love to experience it myself. I bet it's an absolute adrenaline rush, wondering what will happen next, if the lines will hold, if something will slam into you. Bet it was a wild ride!
Glad you guys came out of it relatively unscathed all things considered. Sorry for the people that lost everything, this was a bad one.
I love storms and I thought it was gonna be way more fun than it was 🤣 I threw up three times from fear and seasickness from the four foot waves in the anchorage. I do feel like I have a renewed appreciation for life and a new respect for mother nature!

You guys were so lucky and really have a story to tell. We live in Englewood. 3 large trees down with one poking hole thru roof. Ridge vent blown off with ceilings damage. Could have been a lot worse because we’re just 5 blocks away from Lemon Bay. If storm was north of us the incoming water would have flooded home deep. Glad y’all are safe.

Yes we do and our boat is actually named after her! I took care of my mother when she was sick with cancer and we named the boat Darla Jean after her. She passed away shortly after we launched the boat. She's always with me ☺️

they could have went further away days prior they had warning. I dont know if this deserves respect its kind of a bad decision
Everyone had plenty off time to move their boats ….One would think there is a backup plan to go if it’s your home or livelihood
If you go North & the storm goes North you did not go to a safe spot.
If you go 2 days South and the storm wobbles South you did not go to a safer spot.

@@ot7stan207 Days? I think not. The hurricane was going to hit Tampa up until 18 hours out. And then the next question is "Where do you go"? South - closer to the Hurricane? North where it is supposed to hit? Straight out? Did you see the size of the eye? Just as big as Lake Okeechobee. How many miles should you go to "get away?" and where should that have been? Easy to say what to do afterwards in hindsight.

Looks like it was better to be anchored out , looking at all the boats destroyed at dock so sad ,glad you made it .
Probably safer out there as long as your anchored in multiple directions and far away from other boats.Bigger vessels get away from land and do exactly what you guys did-not saying it wasn’t scary as all hell,I’m sure it was but you lived. Excellent footage thanks for sharing
Nah this was incredibly stupid on a vessel this size. I am 37 as of a week ago and I've have had my captain's license since I was 19. I got my Masters license when I was 31. While I will say that they anchored themselves in multiple directions and the best way that they possibly could have what they did was incredibly reckless and dangerous and just stupid. A storm of that caliber on a boat of that size Just is asking for death. Oh and then of course that selfishly puts others at risk around you for a good people and if in sight will then try to save you and likely cause the same fate to themselves in doing so.
@@Jason-TheChad-Muska_circa1995 -- did they anchor themselves outside the mooring ball? I didn't see any other anchors. Indeed, really an unnecessarily risky move. Once they heard the storm was coming towards them, they should have gotten out. Lucky another boat didn't take them out, or that the mooring ball held at all (not a smart plan)
All I know was upwind of them was pretty wide open. If I had that kind of draft as they do that little island below their starboard quarter is were i would have set three heavy anchors. On the plus side they went with what they had and all went well. Been doing this on my own for 45 years both commercially and under wind, I never hang on a mooring in any thing bigger than 35kts. I find some hiding and get a good nights sleep. ✌️
The shrimp boats on FMB were anchored in multiple directions and they were piled up, flipped over, broken in half, etc. There is NO excuse to ride out a storm like that. There were shelters that took pets, they would come and pick you up and take you, your family, pets, to safe shelters where there was food, water, medical care, etc. No excuses.

My husband and I built this boat while I was taking care of my mother (she passed away from colon cancer) and we named the boat Darla Jean after her. I have the best guardian angel ever!

I am a very lucky man, my ground tackle was all oversized as designed by my father, he handbuilt my boat in San Francisco. Chain rode acts like a shock absorber, catenary of chain has to be lifted, I had 300ft, I also used firehose as chafing gear for my Danforth 3/4 nylon line, I used about four feet tof chafing gear thinking my line might stretch a bit, it was easily 20 ft off the bow at 125 mph. I had to crawl out and double it up at 125 mph, learn from my mistakes. Line stretches more than you imagine. It also was very warm from internal friction. My boat weighed 23 tons.
Looks like you got the north eye wall, Ft Meyers beach and Sanibel got the southern Eye wall which had a bigger storm surge. Glad you didn't have to deal with that too!

Staying on a boat in a Cat4 hurricane, not sure if that is having balls of steel, or just sheer stupidity, because no one is coming. So glad that you made it with no injuries and minimal damage. A lot of boats were not so lucky.
People who live on the bayou in LA also often ride it out in Barratarria Bay on a boat. The boats made it when their homes were washed away or flooded. I don't think I'm brave enough after Hurricane Ida. I rode out Harvey near Houston, but it was Ida that scared me the most.
Charlie completely took my home on the peace River. We rebuilt and sold the home & left FL. Absolutely no desire to go through anymore of that nonsense.

At 1:06 you can see your bridle going through the mooring thimble and your line is clearly chafed and it looks like old chafe because of the growth on it! I would definitely have changed that line, maybe put a back up on and added chafe gear. You were quite lucky.
That's not even the spot on the bridle that I was worried about.......and down here in SWFL growth happens over night! The conditions in our waters are perfect for barnacle growth as well as every thing else. Our lines are 2yrs old and we will be replacing it before next season. I was more worried about the parts of the bridle that were rubbing against the boat just off the cleat. Thanks for you comment!

I ran up the river to Alva the monday before the storm, from Fort Myers Beach. Looking at your footage, I just don't want to think about what would have happened had we stayed. Our S2 Yachts 9.2c is a tank of a boat but I'm not sure it's tanky enough for that. Wind that stripped the paint off...

@Linda R No, you are confusing that with a Tsunami. It is definitely not advised to go out into the water during a hurricane. Anyone who does is lucky to survive.
Some stayed on their boats in Fort Myers tied up at the harbor. I live just off the river in NFM. Can't what they went through. There are still dozens of large vessels stacked up off West 1ST street about 250 feet from the river

That looks terrifying! I'm in the UK and hopefully buying a partially completed Richard Woods Skoota. Was there an alternative choice you could have made, or did you have to just sit it out? In the UK, I've never known wind to be so strong as to take paint off of metal. Crazy!
If I could go back and do it over I would NOT have stayed on the boat! We would have had a lot more damage because we wouldn’t have been there when that sailboat dragged into us in the middle of the night but I still don’t care. In Florida we like to have hurricane parties but this one sucked lol
There is no way I’d do that, unless I’d absolutely have no choice.
It was Ft. Myers Beach that got the direct hit. Everything north of that was a lightest part of the hurricane.
fort myers got the storm surge but we had the wind. sustained winds of 170mph with the highest gust recorded of 205mph from our local marinas
But the more compelling & interesting part of this would be some footage of what YOU all were doing while a hurricane stripped paint off the boat! The aftermath we can see anywhere on RUclips but I really was hoping you could show us what hunkering down in a boat during a hurricane was like.
You were very brave, we live in N. Ft Myers and it got very hairy at our house, and we didn’t even have to deal with the storm surge
That hurricane was scary on land somewhere where it didn't flood. I could not imagine being on a boat during a hurricane. Especially Ian that storm went on and on and on. It was like the never ending storm. Glad you guys are OK.

I would never do that ever. I use to shrimp in Englewood with my dad growing up in, thunderstorms were terrible out there on the bay or in myakka river. That's crazy to me.

It is actually safer-most times- to be on the ocean instead of land. I couldn't have done it but as you can see, they made out better than the land.
With all the falling trees and flooding I would have rather been on the boat. With gusts of 208 and sustained winds of 176mph being in town was worse.

However, being anchored or on a good mooring was the better choice in this case…
We had our boat on a mooring near Stump Pass state park. We had a new pass open up in that area during hurricane Milton which sent huge waves through our anchorage and unfortunately put our boat on land in someone’s backyard!
@ wow, and I thought you made it through without “beaching” in someone’s backyard. Hope the damage was limited, if any at all (except the paint-stripping on the metal parts, shown in your video).
