Thank you much for posting this. Makes me want to cry, but I needed to see this anyway. I love this place, and I do pray it will be possible to rebuild. Love Sanibel!
My heart breaks for beautiful Sanibel, I was fortunate enough to have visited there, and just like everyone else, I fell in love with the beauty, and the wonderful people, wondering if everyone was alright. I remember the gofer turtle, and wondered if he or she was alright, and my husbands palm tree he took so many pictures of and wonder if it was alright! My thoughts and prayers are with all of you!
Breaks my heart to see the island I have been going to for over 40 years in this condition! I love Sanibel can only hope and pray that it can be restored back to its rightful glory!❤️❤️❤️🙏

Thanks so much for the update. Like everyone else, we have been sickened by the destruction of this wonderful island. Many thanks to all the crews who are pulling things back together!
Thank you Chris for posting this video. Many people do not really comprehend the sheer devastation. One of the most significant is the water quality has has changed from the beautiful teal blue to this horrible brown. I've been in FL since 1959 and it doesn't get any easier to see our homes state face this destruction.
It'll return to a beautiful color again (at some point) , it'll just take a whole lotta cleanin up, an a WHOLE lotta time for Nature to also filter it thru. 😶😌 Not sayin it'll ever be exactly the same, but it will one day repair itself from the nastiness that's dredged up and shaken about from the storm. Hopefully they can pump the death an sewage out quicker an expected... that 1st step . . . fingers 🤞🏽fingers 🤞🏽 fingers 🤞🏽
Thank you for sharing this video. As painful as it is to watch, I needed to see it. My heart is breaking as I sit here and cry at the massive devastation to my beautiful Sanibel and for the loss of my beloved Caribe Beach Resort. The memories of the last 30 plus years will live in my heart until I can return one day. My prayers go out to everyone!
PRAYERS from Jacksonville 😓🙏. 💔🖤💝 STAY FLORIDA STRONG 💪👍🤜🤛. Your Blessed. Your Alive. You've made it through the WORST of storms🌀🌊🌬. YOU have a Story to tell💁♀️. Your a Survivor💪. Praying that your lives will get back to whatever kind of "Normal" possible 🙏🙌💖🏖🏝⛱
It’s not about the RICH or POOR. SHAME on those who feel that way. I have lived on Sanibel for 12 years across the street from the light house cafe. I work my tail off to live on Sanibel by choice. On my days off I walk to the beach and enjoy every breath I take. It’s my therapy for the everyday stressers. I never go to the main land due to the traffic. It gives me anxiety. I love all the natural green that once surrounded Sanibel. I don’t choose to live in the concrete jungle. That’s what keeps Sanibel apart from any other place on earth. It keeps me positive and hopeful for my future. I feel grounded and safe on Sanibel. Those of us who live on what I refer to as paradise, embrace each other on morning walks with our coffee. We paint shells with positive words for our visitors to find. I hope those that feel negative about those of us that choose to live on Sanibel will come and find a shell that brings a smile to your face. It may be a couple years but we are SANIBEL strong. Beautiful Sanibel, thank you for this coverage! I loved Sanibel, I’m a native Floridian, had moved away but went to Sanibel for a marvelous weeks vacation with friends! Great coverage of want can happen with a monster hurricane! RIP
Thanks very much, Chris. This is the best coverage I've seen. All the way down Periwinkle and Tarpon Bay and much of Middle Gulf. If you get the chance, a video of the same route going the opposite way would be appreciated.
Thank you, TripleC. Do you mean looking on the other side of the car? This was done in between helping someone pack up to move away, but I might be able to do something.
@@Hemifan4266 Will have to see about getting there. I suspect that the surge would have attenuated a great deal by the time it reached there, traveling across a greater distance. We live in Zone A, but I mentally rely upon the 1 mile of homes/trees/etc to slow a surge before getting here. YMMV!!!!
@@ChrisandNancyTravel - The house was on about 9 or 10 foot stilts, so I thought the same thing. His duplex neighbor had built a 1st floor apartment, so who knows. I really do appreciate your video and information, though I haven't been there since they passed, I have a place in my heart for Sanibel. I hope you and yours are doing well, a friend of mine in Ft. Myers took extensive damage. My name is John, know you are in our prayers...
So sad to see. I have been living here for only 30 short years. Every time a friend or family member visits, Sanibel has been always on the list to visit. Love that Island. So it really breaks my heart to see it so touched by Mother Nature. But I know she will return in time to her beautiful self. God bless all affected. We are with you in our thoughts.
I’m grateful for you sharing your vid of Sanibel! Progress made with the hard work of engineers and big equipment operators to enable access for drivers!! Much devastation on Sanibel that will take years to rebuild. Transformation will be slow with updated codes in place. Bless you and all others who were affected by Monster Ian!!🌈☀️
What a perfect day, but along with the beauty comes the reality once over the bridge. Some places did not get wind damage but the water surge did them in. We ALL need to be thankful for all the crews that have come from all over to help us. Without them we would not be this far along. Our vegetation will take a time to get back to being beautiful once again.
@@ChrisandNancyTravel I bussed a crew around after Irma and they stayed in Englewood, which I thought was pretty far! Tough to find rooms for all these guys, but back in '17 they were getting paid $96 an hr. and time and a half after 8 hrs. -- 15 hr. days 6-7 days a week for many. They rake in the dough and love these hurricane disasters. That crew spent 2 years on Katrina and one guy told me he bought his house cash just from Katrina money. The cost of these things is astronomical!
This is so gut-wrenching. My wife and I have vacationed to Sanibel (with excursions to Captiva) for over thirty years. We were just there in August. It is one of our "happiest" places on the planet. We have openly wept for the outcomes of not just the homeowners and business people, but for the workers who provide all the services on the islands. For economic reasons, few of the island's workers actually live on the islands. So even though they might have lived inland and escaped the major wrath of the storm, their lives are still ruined because thousands of hard-working, dedicated employees have no jobs to return to. Our favorite restaurant was completely leveled to the point that news reports called it a "parking lot". That's (I'm guessing) 60-80 jobs lost for at least a couple of years...probably more. These are hard-working, highly skilled people whose lives have been devastated even if their homes remained intact. Please support any Sanibel/Captiva charities that you feel confidence in. When you do, please don't forget to support the "smaller folk" who worked their asses off to provide you quality and comfort care, who suddenly have no jobs or source of income. Thanks for your time, attention and consideration.
Hey Chris. This video is brilliant and I loved the music. Sanibel is my favorite place to go. when I saw the before/after photos of Shalimar I just burst into tears. I was surprised to see the causeway already open. Thank you, and stay safe.
It just a temporary piece(s) & they just finished it last week ( still quick work though 👍🏼). The real, permanent bridge, all together will take very long.
This is so heartbreaking, we loved Sanibel. Last year we fell in love with the Island and had plans to go again this winter. My heart goes out to all that lived there, the businesses it will take years to restore the beautiful island once again. It is frightening to see what Mother Nature can do!
Thank you so much for this. As painful as it is to watch, I truly appreciate the effort to putting this together. Our paradise, Sanibel, will be back....
Thanks so much for sharing. Fell in love with this island 21 years ago when I went for the first time for my honeymoon, been going there every summer ever since. Got tears in my eyes watching it, but I know they will rebuild. ❤
Thank you so much for this video. I’ve been coming for years. Getting ready for retirement and Sanibel was always on my top list where to live. I know she will recover. Hard seeing these pictures but it has to be seen! Praying for everyone! 💖
I suspect they (USCG?) will have to send an ATON crew to evaluate and consider repairs. The City of Sanibel now owns the Point Ybel tract and structures [structures are gone????] , although the tower is still operational under U.S. Coast Guard control.
Thank you for doing this. Been coming here for 20 years. Periwinkle trees were just starting to canopy again after Charlie😢. We will return and continue to make memories here.
@@ChrisandNancyTravel I did a little research on the Gallery Motel, Sanibel, unless I’m wrong, it used to at 541 E Gulf Dr. If you get back and can film again, I’d like a little closer look at building A, Sundial Beach Resort Middle Gulf Dr, have family that own 7 units in that building. Thank you so much for this eerie, wonderful video. Sanibel is hard to view. Sometimes, I don't recognize it at all until you drove by a business that was still standing or a street sign. I think that I have gone to Sanibel for at least 42 years. I am now 60. It is my home away from home. Thank you for the music that went with the video.
Thank you for noticing the music. I suspect that locations (not all) in Sanibel will be open for business by July 2023, perhaps a few well before then.
They say there's no place like home. It doesnt look or feel like home anymore. It's astonishing to see all the crews of every kind, There just are no words 😢
I watch these videos for signs of hope but it’s rough. I’ve spent maybe 30 days there with our family. It’s barely recognizable but it will recover. 🙏🏼
Thanks for capturing this update Chris. My heart breaks but is hopeful since everyone is focused on the rebuild. I am curious to see the state of the Sundial Resort. Many years there with my wife. We almost bought a place there this past summer. Once they rebuild we will be back.
You are certainly welcome, Steve. I took a pickleball clinic there at Sundial with Simone Jardim, and have watched some of the tournements there. Also, filmed a 100th b/d celebration at the hotel there. I think it will be back.
Was looking at the long-term spaghetti plots and the graphic the newsman showed indicated that our area really is in the path of tropical storm events.
It’s cleaned up a lot and I can even see hints of green coming up !!! One day at a time and before I know it It will be ready for my first visit and I can’t wait !! See you soon Sanibel please take care until I get there ! ❤️
My husband and I spent our Honeymoon on Sanibel Island 24 years ago. We loved it! We’ve been back on Anniversaries a few times and can’t wait to go back again. Our hearts go out to everyone!
Spanish Cay on Middle Gulf is where those underwater cars are. Can't believe it. Stayed in that unit at the dock right there with my parents for 20 years.
Omg 😮 so much destruction! 😢 one of my most favorite places to come to ! Ian really did a number on this island ! I’m glad the light house is still standing ! Really gives u perspective of what wind and water can do ! I just hope and pray the island and everyone and everything can come back from this ! 😢❤😢
I think they will fix the missing leg of the lighthouse (one most inland from the Gulf). One concern is that the protective vegetation (gulf side) is gone, and beach is much closer to the structure. Would not be surprised if they don't look at moving the lighthouse further inland, as they've done for other lighthouses around the country over the decades and centuries.
@@ChrisandNancyTravel I was thinking the same thing ! Or they could bring in beach sand like I’ve seen them do in the past as well ! I guess we’ll see !
@@lindarichie2585 They could do that. Would likely need tons of rip rap, otherwise I fear the added sand could flow away with a strong surge, like and melt away like sugar. megamanual.geosyntec.com/npsmanual/riprap.aspx
Sanibel will come back. The losses from those living/working there are very real and very painful. I am concerned that the Lighthouse is now quite exposed, with one leg gone.
@@barbaraspector6689 I believe it will happen again. I used to think the same about SF, CA. Everywhere has something, but admittedly, this one has quite a history of getting clobbered by hurricanes. "Since 1873, there have been over 50 tropical cyclones passing within 100 nautical miles of the Fort Myers area. Twenty of these storms have been hurricanes passing within 75 miles of Sanibel Island, each of which posed a significant threat to property and lives on the Island at some point in its life cycle" according to Google.
@@ChrisandNancyTravel We don't normally get direct hits, though. I was born and raised in Lee county. I've never seen anything like this, anywhere in Florida. We've had some really bad storms, but no flooding and destruction like this.
Thank you for the video. Being that I've never been there. I know that is not the way it was before. I would have liked to of seen the beauty of it before the storm. I watch shelling videos but they just show the beaches. The whole ordeal has just been horrendous and heartbreaking. Even though I've never been there, I know what it is to lose everything. I live in California, we have been burned out and evacuated a few times. Every year brings a new set of stress and terror when you hear the fire plans fly over. I know devastation and loss. My heart goes out to you all! 💜🐢
Thank you. SWFL is not the only area of the world which has suffered. I think of Syria and the Ukraine - and in some regards, there are similarities. The difference here is the massive amount of relief headed this way.
I was a kid when Donna and Betsy hit SFLA and worked the recovery efforts for Andrew and Charlie which were mostly wind damage but Ian was water and wind. Ian's eye went right over my place and it was so slow to cross and leave.
We have loved taking our kids to Sanibel. We were supposed to visit this past October 22 for a week at the Island Inn. Sanibel has a special place in our hearts. I cried when I saw how bad the damage was. We will be back as soon as the island allows. #Sanibelstrong
my guess is next season for many locations; however, I really don't know about some of the very large multi-units. as a side note, we saw a gigantic truck load of shingles headed south on 75 last night.
My grandparents spent winter months on Sanibel for 20 years until their passing - they would be shocked at this video asking what can they do to help. They also stopped in Captiva.
@@ChrisandNancyTravel You are compiling quite a comprehensive record. We're on Boulder Dr in E. Rocks. The scale of damage you're recording is daunting.
Paradise restored. Reclaimed for nature by it's Creator. The beauty of the silence & peaceful shorelines was never enhanced by the noisesome, polluted intrusion of mankind. I hope many humans are reflecting on what's truly important in this life, things money can't buy or prevent.
I'm not sure that folks are ready to leave it either silent or to the lives and actions of flora and fauna from the sea and shore. People are part of creation as well. Perhaps more consideration for the natural ebb and flood of our barrier islands will be brought into effective codes and enforcement.
I’m pretty new to SWFL. I moved here in January this year. I’m glad I got to see how beautiful sanibel and ft Myers beach was before the destruction. Such a shame. My job used to take me to sanibel every Tuesday. Tuesdays were my favorite days because of sanibel island. I loved the family oriented island lifestyle. The mom and pop stores, the bike trails the beaches, the old school Florida look. The lush vegetation. It’s almost all gone. It’s saddening. Last time I got see see it was that Tuesday right before the storm hit the next day.
My sweet 17 year old nephews name was Ian . Ian took himself out of our lives in 2019 during the pandemic. Our hearts are irreparable. This storm being named Ian was like being slapped very hard in the heart every where I turned. The devastation I see here only adds to the pain. Many prayers for all effected.
No matter how many of these videos I watch, I cannot comprehend the devastation the beautiful area has experienced. I cry out to God, your heaven on earth has turned into a bare dead brown miniscule shadow of its former self. It's as bad as a war zone, but we didn't cause this one. I've been to Sanibel, Captiva, Ft M Bch areas. My heart aches for everyone who was impacted by this unstoppable horror. I'm in NE coastal FL and even Daytona Beach lost its beach, gone! I'm sure this is going to be the top of the list for worst hurricane ever. And where oh where is all that debris going to go? God help and bless everyone touched by this. Thank you for your dedication.
I have no words to describe this devastation that have not been already said. Businesses and homes can be rebuilt, and fairly quickly, but the trees and other vegetation will take years to replace. Sanibel was such a beautiful piece of paradise. Now it's all a big mess. 😪
I visited Sanibel a few different times when my grandparents lived in Fort Myers. I thought it was beautiful and admired the beaches and shells that washed up but seeing the devastation that Hurricane Ian did to this wonderful place saddens me. I truly hope that it can be rebuilt back to or as close to it's original beauty it once held.
Lisa I study and research anthropogenic climate change I just want to mention to you and everybody else here that Global ocean temperatures are on the rise. They are absorbing heat from the atmosphere at a frantic pace. Last year a total of 17 * 10 to the 22nd Joeles heat energy which is equivalent of five Hiroshima thermal nuclear bombs per second was absorbed by the world's oceans. Now the world's oceans covers 3/4 of the entire surface of the Earth so that may seem like a scary number but it's not however I do want to mention it is going up every single year since 1990. It's accelerating to a certain point since the year 2000. What does this mean for planet Earth what does this mean for Florida or the Caribbean or Europe or countries that surround the Indian Ocean? It actually does two things that are really critical and detrimental to human suffering. One due to the The Walker event if you can Google that it makes a lot of sense and the intensity and the direction of the trade winds it will cause horrific flooding on one side of an ocean and drought on the other side. That's just the thermal Dynamic nature of the Walker event. But the thing is with global temperatures on the rise, it's accelerating and intensifying the drought effects in various parts of planet Earth and it's also accelerating flash floods so what's happening is the energy is being in balance is concentrating too much in one location and not providing any moisture in another. And this Cycles back and forth every few years because right now La Nina is in its third cycle and the entire desert Southwest and all states above Texas and now it's stretching east of Texas is in drought. The same with all countries in the same latitudes in Europe. Take a look at all the major rivers in the United States. We're talking about the Colorado River the Rio Grande River going to New Mexico the Mississippi River all of these rivers are critically critically low. And practically every single major river in the southern half of Europe are also critically low. What blows me away is even the Yangtze River is 80% empty. This is all caused by La Nina but it's being supercharged by carbon dioxide emissions trapping heat in the Earth's atmosphere and being reabsorbed by the world's oceans. Every time you drive your car every time your friend your your family your neighbor your coworker whoever if it's a gas driven car the carbon dioxide leaves the tailpipe enters the atmosphere and is trapped in the atmosphere for 300 years. That CO2 could very well drift into another country and intensify their heat. What's the answer to this I know it's it's difficult we depend on fossil fuels for our transportation. But that's the whole idea of what climate change is all about it's carbon dioxide that effectively is preventing heat from escaping into space. Humans are actually endangering and threatening the very planet that they depend on. Scientists have been telling us for 40 years we need to reduce our Greenhouse emissions. I want to also say that 55 million years ago CO2 emissions was responsible for a mass extinction. 70% of all species on planet Earth died from extreme heat or extreme ocean acidification. All plant life and all invertebrate that could migrate into the Arctic. By the way I do want to mention while the United States is the number one leader of CO2 emissions over the last 50 years, China has surpassed us significantly. China puts out 10 . For a billion tons of CO2 per year in the United States is putting out about 5.3 billingtons last year total CO2 emissions last year was 36 billion tons caused by all countries. I have couple videos that so the warnings of CO2 going back 72 years in the past. Go to the website c l i m e a w a r e. Animal agriculture is also one of the leading causes of CO2 emissions and methane emissions. Methane is 100% more powerful than CO2 and it's on the rise. I'm
Wow. That's a lot. I'll have to Google the Walker effect. Thank you for information about the uneven effects of global warming - how one area gets very dry, another gets more stormy weather. People love to argue about the causes of global warming which gets in the way of leaders who should be planning what to do when, for one minor example, Miami will lose neighborhoods due to saline intrusion.

She's pretty famous she's been in front of the camera from ABC NBC CBS. She's been to the Paris Accord. She's been on the stage with Barack Obama and Leonardo DiCaprio. Carbon dioxide emissions was the leading cause of the last mass extinction 55 million years ago and 242 million years ago

It really is very active in restoration. That said, I drove through to Captiva today and would swear I see signs of exhaustion among folk moving debris.

Thanks so much for the update. Like everyone else, we have been sickened by the destruction of this wonderful island. Many thanks to all the crews who are pulling things back together!
Thank you too
Very nicely done… editing with skill and compassion. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you very much!
Thank you Chris for posting this video. Many people do not really comprehend the sheer devastation. One of the most significant is the water quality has has changed from the beautiful teal blue to this horrible brown. I've been in FL since 1959 and it doesn't get any easier to see our homes state face this destruction.
I agree about the water quality. As you might have heard, there now is concern for Vibrio as well as red tide.

It'll return to a beautiful color again (at some point) , it'll just take a whole lotta cleanin up, an a WHOLE lotta time for Nature to also filter it thru. 😶😌
Not sayin it'll ever be exactly the same, but it will one day repair itself from the nastiness that's dredged up and shaken about from the storm. Hopefully they can pump the death an sewage out quicker an expected... that 1st step . . . fingers 🤞🏽fingers 🤞🏽 fingers 🤞🏽
Heartbreaking! Thanks so much for posting this. Haunting music.
Thanks for listening
Thank you for sharing this video. As painful as it is to watch, I needed to see it. My heart is breaking as I sit here and cry at the massive devastation to my beautiful Sanibel and for the loss of my beloved Caribe Beach Resort. The memories of the last 30 plus years will live in my heart until I can return one day. My prayers go out to everyone!

I hope people reconsider building on a barrier island.
I have seen here that at least one retired teacher will not be able to rebuild here.
Susie Anderson
I hope you are able to move back there soon. I'm also not a fan of concrete jungles.
Heart breaking, unrecognizable. Happy to see the Causeway open back up, first step in rebuilding. Thank you the video.
Very welcome
Beautiful Sanibel, thank you for this coverage! I loved Sanibel, I’m a native Floridian, had moved away but went to Sanibel for a marvelous weeks vacation with friends! Great coverage of want can happen with a monster hurricane! RIP
Thank you. It is amazing what the hurricanes can do.
If you could get back in the Dunes, my parents lived there until recently. Their house was on Sandpiper Circle.
YMMV!!!!

Well done Sir. Thank you for sharing. Would like to see more of the other roads on Sanibel and Capitiva
I hope to get back. Perhaps Pine Island as well, as was requested.
Thank you for posting. Prayers from Houston

Well said. Thank you.
Thank you, Judy. There is talk of changing the code requirement: www.fortmyersbeachtalk.com/2017/02/08/council-favors-floodplain-regulation-changes/
Crews have it rough - some were forced to commuted DAILY from TAMPA!
Surreal. Thank you for sharing this. May God bless the people there as they rebuild, and draw them closer to Him.
I hope so
This is so gut-wrenching.
Thank you for your consideration, especially for the "little folk".
Thank you.
I wonder if they will re-build bridges as the temporary solution prolly will have a large impact on flow of the Caloosa.
Thanks for sharing this. It brings home the reality of the extent of the devastation
It becomes numbing after a while. My niece said of her Whitewater Court home - "everything everyone owns there is now on their front lawns.'
Thank you for making this video. It is heartbreaking to watch and yet helpful to see the current state. The islands will recover!
Many of the trees are already regrowing leaves
Such eerie and sad music. It captures exactly how I feel watching this.
Thank you.
This is so heartbreaking, we loved Sanibel. Last year we fell in love with the Island and had plans to go again this winter. My heart goes out to all that lived there, the businesses it will take years to restore the beautiful island once again. It is frightening to see what Mother Nature can do!
I hope they can restore the bike trails - that, for me, was one the unique features of the island.
Thank you so much for this. As painful as it is to watch, I truly appreciate the effort to putting this together. Our paradise, Sanibel, will be back....
You are welcome. and, well said!
Thanks so much for sharing. Fell in love with this island 21 years ago when I went for the first time for my honeymoon, been going there every summer ever since. Got tears in my eyes watching it, but I know they will rebuild. ❤
I camped on the beach some half a century ago in a trip w/ my mother (who slept in the car, lol). It was a lot more undeveloped then.

Thanks for the video, it would be nice to see it after they clean the Debrie off the side of the road, for a comparison.

Sanibel will come back. The losses from those living/working there are very real and very painful. I am concerned that the Lighthouse is now quite exposed, with one leg gone.
No body should ever live in these destroyed places again. It will only happen again, soon.

Do you have any knowledge of the Thriller Speedboat if it survived?? An awesome experience!

I've seen quite a number of storms (including Donna - we didn't evacuate from the beach in St. Augustine, but were fine). This storm was more.
Storms are likely to recur. We could use planning for the future to consider this.
The autos under the merky brown water was disturbing. Great footage.
We saw one car half submerged. Only when I flew the drone did I see there were 6 cars there!

Boulder Dr in E.
The devastation is unbelievable. We go to Silver Key beach each year and it was such a beautiful island.
I feel Sanibel is still beautiful, but I am attracted to the wildness the island represents to me.. The buildings - maybe not so much.
The ride to Sanibel is always a treat. I am pretty sure the lush vegetation will be back - but we are starting dry season, so it might be a while.
Looks like a deserted desert!!
I think many of the trees had their leaves blown off, and that they might recover. Fingers crossed.
I pray for you to find some peace
Thank you for your thoughts. The trees are already starting to show new leaves!

China puts out 10
. For a billion tons of CO2 per year in the United States is putting out about 5.3
billingtons last year total CO2 emissions last year was 36 billion tons caused by all countries.

The sky looks so beautiful while Sanibel is devastated, the repair to causeway and cleanup is going extremely fast .
The sky here is amazing
I Still Love this place
It is still a lovely piece of nature.
Knowing that this type of devastation has happened before and that the ocean can clean itself, the plants can regrow and animals will return assures me that all will be okay. The people will rebuild. Thanks for your insightful video.
Well said. Thank you.
I think I'll stay in New England. Our most ferocious blizzards can't rival this.
The Nor'easters can be fierce. But, you are right - I've never seen the like of this storm in MA, ME, NH or NS.
We must have been out to Sanibel a few hundred times since we moved to SWF. Even I am having a hard time figuring out the landscape. #swfstrong.
I spent more time riding there at night (SWFL Critical Mass). Even so, agree it is very hard for even experienced folk to get oriented.
Holy cow
The little strip between the bridges was decimated
The place is unrecognizable
Yes - the lovely causeway islands are far from what they were.
Does the greenery mostly survive and come back? Or is it hopelessly poisoned for all eternity?
I think that much of what is growing there is salt tolerant and might come back.
Sanibel Lighthouse...still there!+✌
A little tattered, but it made it through the night!
The before & after shots of the lighthouse & its surroundings at 21:15-24:25 are so eerie!
Is that the cops or the lighthouse?
@@ChrisandNancyTravel- hi! I edited my original post for clarity. Incredible footage, by the way.
Wow, look at that destroyed foilage! Damn. 😢
I trust Ding Darling did okay, but I'm not sure about the paved roads there yet.
I used to live on Lake Murex. How’d it fare? 😢
Sorry - I didn't go that far west when helping my friend.
This is just gut-wrenching....I remember Sanibel before even Charlie took her beautiful pines. The ride down Periwinkle was literally an enchanting trip thru an arboreal tunnel. I was but one of the folks who helped rebuild in 05-06 after Charlie...the "new" causeway wasn't even completed then..... to see this much devastation after Ian is unbelievable....and yet it's a hive of activity, cleaning up and rebuilding already....the human spirit is inestimable
It really is very active in restoration. That said, I drove through to Captiva today and would swear I see signs of exhaustion among folk moving debris.
I would love to see this video drive of before Ian hit. I bet it was so beaand green. Sadly it now looks like a deserted wasteland. I know Floridians are strong and it will be even more beautiful than before!!!
My Prayers are with you 🙏!!!
Thanks for the prayers. We were saying that since so much vegetation was blown away you can now see back into spots not formerly visible from the road.
That was a whole lot of police cars there at the end of the video!
Crazy, no?
At the end of the video, why were all the police/sheriff's running lights in formation??
Very good question. I have no idea.
Did Whitney’s bait shop survive?
Sorry. Don't know that
Can anyone tell me how the Sanibel Shell Musium 🐚 handled the storm ?
Destroyed
@@passingthroughtime3033. Really ? That's just Awful. It's so sad to see the devastation down there. I wish I could be there to help with the cleanup.
Drove past today (might show in next vid - don't recall if I captured it). Bldg looked okay.
God, my heart breaks such a beautiful place.
yes
How did the Mucky Duck fare?
I heard a rumor that they survived - but it is just a rumour.
