Yeah that's true, in an interview with Stephen Colbert, Richard was talking about Abidhamma, it came out very naturally... Never knew there were western celebrities with such profound knowledge and experience in Buddhism.
i think Buddhism later on after Buddha died turned into a true religion. I was born in Vietnam and had lots of exposure to "Buddhism" practice. All people did there was going to temple and praying and worshiping Buddha. They probably didn't even know who Buddha was tbh.
i am going through a career change at the moment and was extremely stressed out and depressed. I was transferred by my company from a location that was 15 minutes from home to over an hour away. I met a lady at my new location and on the second day, she mentioned that she was Buddhist. After a 15 minute conversation, I almost started crying. She told that told me that she had been practicing Buddhism for over 40 years (Japanese Nichiren Buddhism). She told me that it has brought her much happiness and prosperity. I only lasted two days at the new location. The day after my last day at work, I had a job interview and chanted on my way. The interview went excellent and they hired me after ten minutes of speaking to me. I plan on visiting a Nichiren temple soon and start learning more. My spirit and mind need healing, love and tenderness at the moment.
Path of Buddhisim is not as easy as it appears. However, it truly helps one in self-discovery. Richard, Tina, and others are great role models and have turned their suffering into an example of courage. Courage of the Tiger who fears nothing. If we can make TV and radio show of Buddhism (much like sometime they have Christian sunday preaching on TV) It would be best if they can get the Dali Lama, because people listen to him. And if Richard Gere is also a part time Buddhist teacher, it would also be a great idea if he is willing to do a Buddhist teaching show also (think about how many fan he got, plus he is old. People more likely to listen to old people.) Although, I don't recommend people that convert to Buddhism to become a monk, at most just become 居士. (I just never think become a solitude monk is a good idea, regardless of whether it is Christianity or Buddhist or any other religion. Only with Christianity, I have no respect to the religion what so ever, so, I would recommend those who already became a solitary monk or nun to leave solitary and if I find a Catholic nun to be hot, I probably hit on her anyway. But won't try the same for Buddhism.)
Ever since RG started standing up against crimes against humanity I have absolutely feel in love with him even more. I have been fan since I was 10 (yes I was 10 crushing on grown man
So much compassion directed towards worldly ego-solutions. Have they ever worked? Religion will give you a hope to go to heaven after death. 50% 50% Buddha's practical path will detach your body and mind attaining supreme bliss before you die. 100%
why 50 % ? there are 2500 gods , only one god exists , so the probability of Christianity God exists is 1/2500 = 0,04% . when you by a lotto ticket , you think you have 50 % win , 50 % lost , but not - if one ticket win , the probability to win is 1/ the number of people buy ticket , but at least there are people who win big prize - If you sow a coin 1000 times , you have 50% head up , 50 % tail up . But the 2 sides of coins are real . scientist prove God existence is improbable . so there is 0 % you go to his land
One thing as I watch the documentary on the Buddha I have learned throughout my life as an African American at 47 years of age that religion is more so now reaching to God instead of God letting God reach to man the thing is is that when you get people such as Richard Gere who has to make a living as an actor its not that he glorifies his part he's making money and we can't get upset with it because we watch them the thing is it's what's within a man's heart mind and soul that is the true character of that person I am an American Muslim I grew up in a Christian home and I still hold my Christian beliefs very dear but I also believe in a lot of the ideas of other religions such as Buddhism we are all reaching for one thing and that's peace and enlightenment and if you can't see through all the rhetoric and look at the wholesomeness den we're just as much hypocrites as the ones that we claim that others are but that's just my opinion
+Alexander Yarborough Yeah a multi Millionare sex icon always makes a very peaceful Bhiddist, Christian, Muslim, Scientologist etc.. he probably jumped ship from Christianity because he knew that he had to give away all his money & wealth to the poor =)
Why do you think bad about Mr Gere ? Why he must give away his money if he were Christian ? To bribe God to do to his heavenly country ? Don' t you think this teaching is a plot of church fathers to get more money from their followers ? Mr Gere keep money and get more from interests or investigation , so he can use this surplus to help others . How can you are so sure he does'nt help the need . I guess he has given a lot money for Tibetan exiles , for example .
@Kira Alexander Yes they feelings come from one source, that source is you, and how you will react depends on your self-seeing/ego, get angry if someone steal from you. but if u dont have a big attaching/ego you wont be angry in the same way if/when someone steal from you, or lie to you. Have compassion for the thief, he maybe need the item more then you, have compassion for the liar, he maybe lied so you might like him better. Its not about fighting your feelings, its about understanding them.
If you've ever had to ask yourself the question 'why me', then Richard Gear is right. You are responsible for your life and no one else is. You live the consequences of your own doing. If God was to decide our lives conditions, I am sure, he wouldn't have had someone begging on the street on a cold windy winter evening! Be real, get real, and start taking responsibility for yourthiughts and actions folks. God is not to be blamed for who you are, neither can he make you rich and famous. Start living!
I learn from buddhism, but still believe in a creator. I also think that God doesn’t want begging all the time, we have got gifted such a advanced brain and capabilities, so there is a sense of given responsibility to us. And that holds in that we have to make the right choices and work for it if we want something.
I agree that we should be responsible for our lifes, but don't agree that everyone can control their own life. There are life circumstances, that we are not able to influence but those influence our life quite a lot e.g. where and whom you were born, if you are healthy or have disabilities. It is not so simple. We all have not the same possibilities.
Our brain offers us a greater ability than what is being shared in these videos. Its a mindset of The Nine Essential Qualities of Mindfulness and Mushin or Mu Shin-A Mind without a Mind. After a near drowning at age six, I begin using this unique mindset to heal and rewire my brain. Since, there isn't an stress living with this mindset a person has no need to meditate for these two mindsets acting as one prevents it.
We will never be completely satisfied with our existence for many reasons. One of the primary reasons is because we put too many conditions on it. For me, as I get older, I don't want what will come with a lot of things. "The more that you carry, the heavier it is"- Chan Master Cheng Yen.
I was born into a catholic family. At age 24 I got involved in Buddhism, which fascinated me... I found the fact that all my suffering is my own responsibility so hard to deal with, that I remained a very bad catholic...
One of the more insidious aspects of Buddhism is teaching people that they are to blame for their sufferings, across the board. Dastardly, to say the least
Klimt kablooie I hope you still do not believe any of that bullcrap about suffering, because it is No Fact Whatsoever....Buddhism is largely a crazy sham
Baby Mammoth34 - :/ i hope you do not truly believe buddhism is a sham. i mean logic says life means constant struggle - not necessarily SUFFERING - but just normal struggle. dumbasses at work, things you want to attain but don't have the skill, depression & anxiety problems with those who have imbalances that they can't actually help, ..... all of that depends on you and how much you want to either deal with the dumbasses at work, or fight back at them and argue against them. OR leave. Want something but have no skill? get that skill, OR... deal with the fact you don't have the money to get those skills, or the ability.... and just move onto something else. IT IS up to you. that's just logic. so buddhism can't, thereby, be that much of a sham. Actual stoicism matched with buddhism, IMO, could actually do a lot of good for people. You could detach your emotions about what others do, those things you can't do anything about, AND meditate to calm your own emotional turmoil and avoid getting on medication that could cause MORE problems.
Buddah is no an idol but a tool of Meditation of reaching oneself. I am a Christian and Love Jesus. We are not to look at the statue. I am still discovering and understanding about being in touch with self.
Laudiaann Robia Hi..The Holy Cross looks like an idol to me. The statue of Mary holding the baby Jesus looks like an idol too..???!!!!!! Nothing out of the ordinary statement to benign other religions..
what about those buddhists in japan who harpoon poor sharks, cut their fins off and turn them into fin soup, then throw the poor shark back in to the water? and you call that spiritual? a bit like bullfignting in catholic countries.
+byblis persephone Okay, what about the Sinhala Buddhists who killed thousands of Tamils during Sri Lanka's civil war? What about the military juntas of Thailand? What about the Burmese Buddhists who are killing Muslims?
byblis persephone I'm pretty sure you don't concede this kind of reasoning to Jews and Christians, who follow the Ten Commandments among which is not to kill.
Moses , having told his followers thou shall not kill encouraged them to kill all the Midianites and save the virgins as chattels/prize, which then they did
My ex-wife, a Panamanian, loved Richard Gere as an actor and as a person as well. She kept telling me so many times when we were shopping around for our weekend movies that she found him so sexy. For me, i was happy that she was happy :)
couldn't agree more. From the onset, and based on my personal experience, Buddhism and the path to happiness seems easy. Casual meditation and a few books should do it. But of course this isn't the case. Understanding the path within itself takes a great deal of time and effort let alone progressing on the path to enlightenment. It takes tremendous hard work and determination.
In my opinon, We are all individuals have same power to do something for Humanity. The important question is how much we are aware of our true potential.
Socrates: Gnothi seauton( Know Thyself). Krishnamurti: You know yourself in relationship to Ideas, People, and Things. It’s all about Awareness, that is Self-Awareness. Thomas Merton writes about Buddhism. Buddhism and Christianity don’t conflict in that both paths can lead us to ‘salvation’ that is saving our True Selves( souls). A different way( language) for the same thing.
respect. After watching Brian Ruhe's delusional videos this comes as a pure breeze blowing in my face. I wouldn't call myself a Buddhist, Taoist, Pantheist or any other -ist. That being said doesn't mean I don't agree with the path, the Buddha, The Dharma and the Sangha. (I just happen to think most places where I come across Buddhism it's not the Buddhism that's in my mind...) The book Siddhartha by Herman Hesse is an interesting one, dealing with a guy named same as the Gautama, walking a similar path, still he's not Gautama. And in the end his life choices seems more in accordance with the Buddhist/Taoist way I prefer. Just like Tao Te Ching, or Dhammappada. But how many practicing temples in i.e. Thailand do you see actually follow these simple paths? I live here and can tell you they are few...
Haven found liberation, they show the path to liberation. The holy Dharma, is good in the beginning, good in the middle and good in the end. It brings the journey to an end. By this merit may all obtain brilliant glory. ❤️
I am a Hindhu, But I always loved Buddhism, because it is so intense & real & straightforward & uncomplicated. I have read 4 noble truths & 8 noble paths many times so far & conceptually i have understood it, but wanted a tool to practice. I mostly play games in my iPhone & I searched for Buddha related apps & I saw one interesting app called "BuDhamma"? by Lokesh Hanumappa. This app helps you practice 8 noble path in a cool way with reminders, reports, tests & graphic rich practice summary.
At last, a philosophy that deals with the reality of suffering at a satisfactory level. I know these are all just western actors but the message is true.
I wonder if Richard Gere ever visited prisoners like my zen teacher at the Montreal Zen Centre the late (Albert Low). He was a great teacher, most people don't care to teach the meditation practice, it's a big sacrifice, its a hardy vocation. Albert Low had a wonderful career but he put it aside to teach zen full time. His wife Jean was a great teacher as well, very gracious and attentive.. something that a lot of people don't or did not receive when they were growing up.
Even after 30 years of reading about Buddhism and Taoism I learnt a lot from this presentation. The simple cookie analogy is very good. Did I understand it correctly? The more cookies you eat, the better it is? 😅
My name is nay myo khaung.I don't know who is the uploader of this video file but I like Richard. He is right. He is also best actor of I like. Now I have one important - want to say to Richard is if he really want to see the Dharma, go to Paauk Taw Ra at Kyar Inn Village in Myalamyine - Myanmar. I am also practise mediatation.
Who wants deeper problems? Are your own problems just that you are not rich and successful? just because celebrities have money doesn't mean they don't have other things to make them suffer and question the world There "ego" is rich, maybe not their lives Buddhism helps that It gives meaning
Sonki Anh Thanks my friend. As a person who is born and raised in Turkey I have very very very tiny information on BUddhism. Just I always think of meditation is the equal with thinking. And I still think so. Meditation means simply thinking with concentration and focus. Am I right?
Try to get away from teachings on youtube comments. The worlds used in tibetan or sanscrit that are transalted for meditation usually mean "familiarizaton or cultivating" so meditation is a way of cultivating the mind so it can be more relaxed, open, stable, compassionate and clear. Here is some usefull information about meditation from tergar, organization by mingyur rinpoche, a great tibetan teacher. This is tibetan buddhism oriented but its vary basic so it can be helpfull even if you are interested in other buddhist oriented paths, witch are all great. tergar.org/meditation/
Therawada buddhusm is NOT originated from hinduihism. Therawada is the code of discipline and the script of dhamma which has been followed by maha theros, (enlightened ones). These teachings are original and quite contrary to hindunism. Specially in terms of belief of Maha Brhama the creator of both world and humans, against the natural law of causation theory. (Patichcha samuppaada)The second point is the rebirth of a permenent self (Athma),As against non self which is non permenent (anathma) , (anicca)
TheClauses I know Theravada did not originate from Hinduism, I was just asking your opinion on this since I saw a fellow sri lankan from Theravada branch spitting bullshit and claiming that Buddhism originated from Hinduism which does not make any sense.

Thank goodness for Richard Gere. Now, all the children who are starving, living in war-torn regions, and riddled with disease can just "change their mind," since it's all up to us individually. Someone give this man a Nobel Prize.
Christians don't want to hear it Richard, the world was created from a mind of Rage at God/Love; The ego. Thank you for this thoughtful talk. Bless you.
what is buddhist prayer? at the end richard gere is in some sort of prayer pose. but what would he be praying to? and for what? as an atheist, i find it difficult to understand how an atheist (he says there is no creator god) could pray.
+kate-mia white , yeah if your doing buddhism similar to the ones in Thailand, the buddhism I do, we pray for other people's wellbeing in order to enlighten ourselves
+Ashley L I went to a mental asylum a while back on a short visit, I read Om Mani Pedme Hum and the great compassion mantra to someone who was supposed to be locked up for 5 days+ she was released the day after, call it coincidence call it chance, I just feel like I'm helping someone and demand no reward for it. scientifically speaking your instilling someones heart with positiveness and that alone can cause the person to be in a optimal healing state.
+Ashley L He is Praying to Narcissus & doesn't even know it, in other words, he is praying to & only worships himself!. It is fitting & so typical that people like this deny & are offended by the notion of God. Because they think that they ARE God's themselves.
Know that what you see in front of you are just visions, a tree, a person, an animal, a situation. Its not until, you discover the vision with your five sense that it comes to life.
there is an interesting paradox in countries like thailand which has a basis in buddhism and many aspects of the culture i like but like many countries the thirst for wealth and money and possessions take over and dont ultimately bring happiness/
He has a deeper knowledge in Buddhism than us born Buddhists....That's wonderful

i love how Buddhism doesn't have a "the answer is out there" aura about it, but rather a "the answer is within you" feel to it.
Buddhist meditation helped me better manage my emotions and I like this guy Richard Gere :)
I use to be a evangelical/fundamental Christian and Buddhist meditation helped me with my emotional state far better than anything else.

Richard gere the man with golden heart ..
excellent man, excellent path!
He is responsible for sticking a gerbil up his butt.
Richard Gere attended North Syracuse HS..MY HS....ACCORDING TO MY GENEALOGY..WE ARE VERY DISTANT COUSINS..
Introspection is more powerful than any drug on the market.
Totally so truthful awesome documentary !
Since, there isn't an stress living with this mindset a person has no need to meditate for these two mindsets acting as one prevents it.
may u have a good practice and attain enlightenment
thank You sooooooo mutch friend :)
great. inspirational. Thank. you. your. wisdom. and. the. truth.......
A good basis of belief. I met Richard in 1970 as a young girl.
Damn, you old as hell.
*has he had a sex change?
my mum's favorite actor happens to be in the same kinda buddhism I'm in lol awesome!
He’s really great buddhist practitioner!
Student of Tibetan Buddhism, and Dalai Lama.
Why is he living still in a society which is based on killing and destruction to maintain itself, then?
We will never be completely satisfied with our existence for many reasons. One of the primary reasons is because we put too many conditions on it.
For me, as I get older, I don't want what will come with a lot of things.
"The more that you carry, the heavier it is"- Chan Master Cheng Yen.
I was born into a catholic family. At age 24 I got involved in Buddhism, which fascinated me... I found the fact that all my suffering is my own responsibility so hard to deal with, that I remained a very bad catholic...
+Klimt Kahlo can i get more story?
One of the more insidious aspects of Buddhism is teaching people that they are to blame for their sufferings, across the board. Dastardly, to say the least
Klimt kablooie I hope you still do not believe any of that bullcrap about suffering, because it is No Fact Whatsoever....Buddhism is largely a crazy sham
*Kahlo, sorry for messing the last part of your name up :-)
Baby Mammoth34 - :/ i hope you do not truly believe buddhism is a sham. i mean logic says life means constant struggle - not necessarily SUFFERING - but just normal struggle. dumbasses at work, things you want to attain but don't have the skill, depression & anxiety problems with those who have imbalances that they can't actually help, ..... all of that depends on you and how much you want to either deal with the dumbasses at work, or fight back at them and argue against them.
Laudiaann Robia
Hi..The Holy Cross looks like an idol to me. The statue of Mary holding the baby Jesus looks like an idol too..???!!!!!! Nothing out of the ordinary statement to benign other religions..
Absolutely brilliant!
Y so many Dislikes ,,, May God guide you all and awakes u within n Free from pain n sufferings and ignorance
I’m not a Buddhist, but I saw this video in a class called World Religions. Fascinating watch
Daoism and Buddism are the religion for human being, no hate no violent, but peaceful and study the universe and human being knowledges.
what about those buddhists in japan who harpoon poor sharks, cut their fins off and turn them into fin soup, then throw the poor shark back in to the water?
and you call that spiritual? a bit like bullfignting in catholic countries.
+Dassoon Fitz you just don't get it do you. think on the message before answering.
+byblis persephone
Okay, what about the Sinhala Buddhists who killed thousands of Tamils during Sri Lanka's civil war? What about the military juntas of Thailand? What about the Burmese Buddhists who are killing Muslims?
byblis persephone
I'm pretty sure you don't concede this kind of reasoning to Jews and Christians, who follow the Ten Commandments among which is not to kill.
Moses , having told his followers thou shall not kill encouraged them to kill all the Midianites and save the virgins as chattels/prize, which then they did
My path begins and yet. . . I have always been on this path 🙏😊
Yes! You are the master of your life
Ohh yes thanks a lot
In my opinon, We are all individuals have same power to do something for Humanity. The important question is how much we are aware of our true potential.
"No one else is going to fix it for you." Unfortunately, so I am learning. So how to do this? Hope I can learn.
(I just happen to think most places where I come across Buddhism it's not the Buddhism that's in my mind...)
The book Siddhartha by Herman Hesse is an interesting one, dealing with a guy named same as the Gautama, walking a similar path, still he's not Gautama. And in the end his life choices seems more in accordance with the Buddhist/Taoist way I prefer. Just like Tao Te Ching, or Dhammappada. But how many practicing temples in i.e. Thailand do you see actually follow these simple paths? I live here and can tell you they are few...
Thaii is a kingdom land , Absolute Monarchy everything was under his influence , The most Evil
I agree with you, it's just like a wisdom teaching, mind cultivation, life philosophy, and compassion
I mostly play games in my iPhone & I searched for Buddha related apps & I saw one interesting app called "BuDhamma"? by Lokesh
Hanumappa.
Actually buddist tripitaka consits of 57 books and 84000 techings so it is really hard to learn all the things
thank you for uploading it help me with my homework

Is meditation same thing with thinking?
ıf not what is the difference between thinking and meditation

Is Buddhism a Religion or a Philisophy (a way of life)?
i am a buddhist from Srilanka let me know if you have questions regarding Theravada Buddhism i can explain really well
How can you explain Theravada Buddhism originated from Hinduism?
What is the essential difference between mahayana n theravada or hinayana Buddhism?
Therawada buddhusm is NOT originated from hinduihism. Therawada is the code of discipline and the script of dhamma which has been followed by maha theros, (enlightened ones). Thank you for this!
Thank you RG
l love buddhist
Your not praying to anyone your meditating to help yourself live more mindfully and to be aware of yourself and your feelings
Because they think that they ARE God's themselves.
no...you realise in buddhist books your western god exists, just as you would be offended by the notion of the islamic god and so forth
I met him was amazing to me Elle
I love you richard
Know that what you see in front of you are just visions, a tree, a person, an animal, a situation. Its not until, you discover the vision with your five sense that it comes to life.
🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🌹🌹🌹🌺🌺🌺💐💐💐❤️❤️❤️
there is an interesting paradox in countries like thailand which has a basis in buddhism and many aspects of the culture i like but like many countries the thirst for wealth and money and possessions take over and dont ultimately bring happiness/
@SERVEewerIDOLonEWERknees you just made this rubbish up didn't you.
