      Yeah that's true, in an interview with Stephen Colbert, Richard was talking about Abidhamma, it came out very naturally... Never knew there were western celebrities with such profound knowledge and experience in Buddhism.

      i think Buddhism later on after Buddha died turned into a true religion. I was born in Vietnam and had lots of exposure to "Buddhism" practice. All people did there was going to temple and praying and worshiping Buddha. They probably didn't even know who Buddha was tbh.

    Path of Buddhisim is not as easy as it appears. However, it truly helps one in self-discovery. Richard, Tina, and others are great role models and have turned their suffering into an example of courage. Courage of the Tiger who fears nothing. Chanting Nam Myo Ho Renge Kyo brings harmony into our environment via Law of Attraction.

    i am going through a career change at the moment and was extremely stressed out and depressed. I was transferred by my company from a location that was 15 minutes from home to over an hour away. I met a lady at my new location and on the second day, she mentioned that she was Buddhist. After a 15 minute conversation, I almost started crying. She told that told me that she had been practicing Buddhism for over 40 years (Japanese Nichiren Buddhism). She told me that it has brought her much happiness and prosperity. I only lasted two days at the new location. The day after my last day at work, I had a job interview and chanted on my way. The interview went excellent and they hired me after ten minutes of speaking to me. I plan on visiting a Nichiren temple soon and start learning more. My spirit and mind need healing, love and tenderness at the moment.

    The underlying truth, the Oneness and the Present, in all religions is what I love. Mostly, though, I love the spirituality of life & of the beyond, trying to stay Present without the chatter in my mind...mindfulness - not easy, is it?. ~~ Attaining the Buddha Mind along with the Christ Mind, along with Union with the Divine, is what I have had, and want to stay in touch with. TY for posting these... Richard Gere is a true inspiration and his kindness shines for us all....

    So many people misunderstand the essence of Bhuddism. Even in the intro she says it's "personally damanding" and that's the opposite of truth. Your body and your senses are what's personally demanding. Bhuddism aims to remove these falsehoods, quiet the mind and senses and the idea of "self" all together for only then can we fully live and Love unencumbered by our worldy minds fear.

      Is Richard Gere just a ordinary Buddhist or a Buddhist teacher?
      I am not sure how western Buddhism is different from Asian Buddhism, but in Asia they have 和尚 roughly translated into "monk" and 居士. The monks 和尚 like Catholic priest are solitude monks (symbolize by them shaving off all their hair) 居士 are like Anglican and Baptists priest are not solitude monks, but can still serve as preacher, teacher and priest of the religion. To the best of my knowledge, the Buddhist teacher in western country is same as the 居士 in Asia.
      Also, consider how corrupt Christianity is and even after 500 years of religion reform, so many Christian groups is still so corrupt, we need to go beyond reform Christianity and start actively converting people away from Christianity. Buddhism would be a great choice.
      Do, you know what would be a good way to start converting people? If we can make TV and radio show of Buddhism (much like sometime they have Christian sunday preaching on TV) It would be best if they can get the Dali Lama, because people listen to him. And if Richard Gere is also a part time Buddhist teacher, it would also be a great idea if he is willing to do a Buddhist teaching show also (think about how many fan he got, plus he is old. People more likely to listen to old people.)
      Although, I don't recommend people that convert to Buddhism to become a monk, at most just become 居士. (I just never think become a solitude monk is a good idea, regardless of whether it is Christianity or Buddhist or any other religion. Only with Christianity, I have no respect to the religion what so ever, so, I would recommend those who already became a solitary monk or nun to leave solitary and if I find a Catholic nun to be hot, I probably hit on her anyway. But won't try the same for Buddhism.)

    If you've ever had to ask yourself the question 'why me', then Richard Gear is right. You are responsible for your life and no one else is. You live the consequences of your own doing. If God was to decide our lives conditions, I am sure, he wouldn't have had someone begging on the street on a cold windy winter evening! Be real, get real, and start taking responsibility for yourthiughts and actions folks. God is not to be blamed for who you are, neither can he make you rich and famous. Start living!

    • @9charlie84
      @9charlie84 4 года назад

      I learn from buddhism, but still believe in a creator. I also think that God doesn’t want begging all the time, we have got gifted such a advanced brain and capabilities, so there is a sense of given responsibility to us. And that holds in that we have to make the right choices and work for it if we want something.

    • @myslenka2548
      @myslenka2548 4 года назад

      I agree that we should be responsible for our lifes, but don't agree that everyone can control their own life. There are life circumstances, that we are not able to influence but those influence our life quite a lot e.g. where and whom you were born, if you are healthy or have disabilities. It is not so simple. We all have not the same possibilities.

      why 50 % ? there are 2500 gods , only one god exists , so the probability of Christianity God exists is 1/2500 = 0,04% . when you by a lotto ticket , you think you have 50 % win , 50 % lost , but not - if one ticket win , the probability to win is 1/ the number of people buy ticket , but at least there are people who win big prize - If you sow a coin 1000 times , you have 50% head up , 50 % tail up . But the 2 sides of coins are real . scientist prove God existence is improbable . so there is 0 % you go to his land

    @Kira Alexander Yes they feelings come from one source, that source is you, and how you will react depends on your self-seeing/ego, get angry if someone steal from you. but if u dont have a big attaching/ego you wont be angry in the same way if/when someone steal from you, or lie to you. Have compassion for the thief, he maybe need the item more then you, have compassion for the liar, he maybe lied so you might like him better.
    Its not about fighting your feelings, its about understanding them.

    One thing as I watch the documentary on the Buddha I have learned throughout my life as an African American at 47 years of age that religion is more so now reaching to God instead of God letting God reach to man the thing is is that when you get people such as Richard Gere who has to make a living as an actor its not that he glorifies his part he's making money and we can't get upset with it because we watch them the thing is it's what's within a man's heart mind and soul that is the true character of that person I am an American Muslim I grew up in a Christian home and I still hold my Christian beliefs very dear but I also believe in a lot of the ideas of other religions such as Buddhism we are all reaching for one thing and that's peace and enlightenment and if you can't see through all the rhetoric and look at the wholesomeness den we're just as much hypocrites as the ones that we claim that others are but that's just my opinion

      Why do you think bad about Mr Gere ? Why he must give away his money if he were Christian ? To bribe God to do to his heavenly country ? Don' t you think this teaching is a plot of church fathers to get more money from their followers ? Mr Gere keep money and get more from interests or investigation , so he can use this surplus to help others . How can you are so sure he does'nt help the need . I guess he has given a lot money for Tibetan exiles , for example .

    • @ibkristykat
      @ibkristykat 6 лет назад

      Baby Mammoth34 - :/ i hope you do not truly believe buddhism is a sham. i mean logic says life means constant struggle - not necessarily SUFFERING - but just normal struggle. dumbasses at work, things you want to attain but don't have the skill, depression & anxiety problems with those who have imbalances that they can't actually help, ..... all of that depends on you and how much you want to either deal with the dumbasses at work, or fight back at them and argue against them. OR leave. Want something but have no skill? get that skill, OR... deal with the fact you don't have the money to get those skills, or the ability.... and just move onto something else. IT IS up to you. that's just logic. so buddhism can't, thereby, be that much of a sham. Actual stoicism matched with buddhism, IMO, could actually do a lot of good for people. You could detach your emotions about what others do, those things you can't do anything about, AND meditate to calm your own emotional turmoil and avoid getting on medication that could cause MORE problems.

    So much compassion directed towards worldly ego-solutions. Have they ever worked? Richard Gere is aware that you bring yourself to every situation. “You have ultimate responsibility for your experience. You gotta work on your mind. When you change your mind the universe changes.” How can the Tibetans be victims then? Isn't freedom born in the mind first? The easiest way to ressurect from the tomb of hate and conflict is to love and bless your enemies.

    respect. After watching Brian Ruhe's delusional videos this comes as a pure breeze blowing in my face. I wouldn't call myself a Buddhist, Taoist, Pantheist or any other -ist. That being said doesn't mean I don't agree with the path, the Buddha, The Dharma and the Sangha. (I just happen to think most places where I come across Buddhism it's not the Buddhism that's in my mind...)
    The book Siddhartha by Herman Hesse is an interesting one, dealing with a guy named same as the Gautama, walking a similar path, still he's not Gautama. And in the end his life choices seems more in accordance with the Buddhist/Taoist way I prefer. Just like Tao Te Ching, or Dhammappada. But how many practicing temples in i.e. Thailand do you see actually follow these simple paths? I live here and can tell you they are few...

    Socrates: Gnothi seauton( Know Thyself). Krishnamurti: You know yourself in relationship to Ideas, People, and Things. It’s all about Awareness, that is Self-Awareness. Thomas Merton writes about Buddhism. Buddhism and Christianity don’t conflict in that both paths can lead us to ‘salvation’ that is saving our True Selves( souls). A different way( language) for the same thing.

    Even after 30 years of reading about Buddhism and Taoism I learnt a lot from this presentation. The simple cookie analogy is very good. Did I understand it correctly? The more cookies you eat, the better it is? 😅

    I am a Hindhu, But I always loved Buddhism, because it is so intense & real & straightforward & uncomplicated.
    I have read 4 noble truths & 8 noble paths many times so far & conceptually i have understood it, but wanted a tool to practice.
    I mostly play games in my iPhone & I searched for Buddha related apps & I saw one interesting app called "BuDhamma"? by Lokesh
    Hanumappa. This app helps you practice 8 noble path in a cool way with reminders, reports, tests & graphic rich practice summary.

    couldn't agree more. From the onset, and based on my personal experience, Buddhism and the path to happiness seems easy. Casual meditation and a few books should do it. But of course this isn't the case. Understanding the path within itself takes a great deal of time and effort let alone progressing on the path to enlightenment. It takes tremendous hard work and determination.

    I wonder if Richard Gere ever visited prisoners like my zen teacher at the Montreal Zen Centre the late (Albert Low). He was a great teacher, most people don't care to teach the meditation practice, it's a big sacrifice, its a hardy vocation. Albert Low had a wonderful career but he put it aside to teach zen full time. His wife Jean was a great teacher as well, very gracious and attentive.. something that a lot of people don't or did not receive when they were growing up.

    I was raised in a spiritual format and was taught that there has been several incarnations of Jesus...one being that of Buddha. I was taught that Jesus was the master of the heart, but Buddha is the master of the mind.

      Sakya Buddha was born before Jesus about 600 years , how can Jesus incarnated as Buddha ? In addition to that , Buddha rejected many times the idea about God creator .

    Do you think that some Buddhist in the future will ever adopt the American southern style of soul music in their practice? I practiced zen before, but I couldn't stand the chanting. I know it's from another culture and it has historical authenticity but compare that chanting to so many famous Hollywood musicals, adventure themes, war themes, family love story themes. Or what about the Doobie Brothers (perhaps a few of their songs) beats most of these chanting. Some of the modern last century classical music is crazy beautiful.. I want to hear that music in a zendo. Maybe I will DJ in a zendo soon, haha. If culture is a barrier to bring Buddhist teachings and practice to the masses in America, Europe, then something will have to change, some leaders will have to make some profound changes. That's my opinion. I have 2 questions; What's a zendo or what is zen? Most people in America, Canada dont know. 2nd question; Who's Kim Kardashian? Oh my, everybody seems to know that one..so there lies the problem. Freeking social media isn't doing their jobs, haha

    I think buddhism is not all about responsibility and "work" as Richard Gere says here. It is equally about allowing and letting go. In that sense it is a "middle way". In the western work ethic, there's always something to attain, and nirvana is not a 'thing', and I wouldn't call mindfulness "work". Of course it depends on individual interpretations of buddhism. :)

      How can you explain Theravada Buddhism originated from Hinduism?

    • @TheClauses
      @TheClauses 7 лет назад

      Therawada buddhusm is NOT originated from hinduihism. Therawada is the code of discipline and the script of dhamma which has been followed by maha theros, (enlightened ones). These teachings are original and quite contrary to hindunism. Specially in terms of belief of Maha Brhama the creator of both world and humans, against the natural law of causation theory. (Patichcha samuppaada)The second point is the rebirth of a permenent self (Athma),As against non self which is non permenent (anathma) , (anicca)

    • @earlybuddhism2600
      @earlybuddhism2600 7 лет назад

      TheClauses I know Theravada did not originate from Hinduism, I was just asking your opinion on this since I saw a fellow sri lankan from Theravada branch spitting bullshit and claiming that Buddhism originated from Hinduism which does not make any sense.
