Comparing Panasonic RF-5000 vs Icom PCR1000

  • I compare the vintage radio Panasonic RF-5000 to the Icom PCR1000 software controlled radio. Both radios are connected to the same outdoor dipole antenna. After finding the RF-5000 to be very insensitive, I discover that the antenna is not connected properly. After that, the RF-5000 works better but still seems insensitive.
    This comparison was done for entertainment only.

    The Pan 5000 was never at the top of the heap in terms of sensitivity and selectivity -- it
    is still one of the wonderful classic portables from the 70's and 80's, a beautiful piece of
    equipment...

    I am confused. Was there an antenna connection problem?
    You video setup was fine.

      Yes there was a problem. As usual, I'm the cause of half the problems I encounter. I had the antenna plugged into the FM inputs not the shortwave. Once I moved it, the radio worked much better but still didn't seem to have the sensitivity I would expect. I am always suspicious of myself so I'm not going to claim the test was done 100% correctly. But at this point, there does seem to be a lack of sensitivity.

      I have this radio too (actually I have the 5000 and the 1500). My 5000 was bought used and the band selector buttons are very intermittent. I had attributed the low sensitivity to the poor selector contacts but maybe not based on your video. There is also the possibility the first RF amplifier is damaged. I don't have a schematic to determine if the shortwave band has a different RF front end.

      hamrad88 I found the schematic on Radiomuseum. The FM and AM have completely separate front ends of course. The LW and MW bands bypass the first RF amplifier and the second set of tuned coils. Now that I know this, I'm interested in seeing if those bands are strong while the rest are weak. All the rest of the bands pass through the first RF amplifier - a 2SC185. The base of the RF amplifier transistor is protected by a .033 uf capacitor and a neon light bulb across the antenna line where it enters the radio. . . . . I just gave the radio a quick check at it seems that the LW band switch will not hold a connection and the SW1 band is very weak while all other bands, including the AM Broadcast band are about the same level. LW is the same level too (radio background noise) if I keep the button held in. The circuit for SW1 appears to have a capacitor in series with the signal where the other bands do not have a capacitor. Other than that, it's the same front end circuit for every band. I'm thinking the 1st RF amp is OK on this radio.
