    As a PC enthusiast and robot developer, I actually don't like how much tech has been added, because most of it is just gimmicky stuff that yields very little improvement, but increases the price (both total vehicle cost and maintenance costs), complexity, and failure rates. In fact for some cars, the electronic replacements are distinctly worse. Take seat controls for example. Those motors are so slow and heavy, and it costs extra to have them. Having a few spring-loaded levers are so much faster, easier, cheaper, and light-weight. However, I do see the benefit of electric controls when you have "seat profiles" for multiple drivers.

    • @daer2121
      @daer2121 5 лет назад +7

      My 20 year old car would need 11 different levers and dials to replicate what it does with it's little electronic panel. On the more adjustable seats, it would get kinda silly.

For seat controls that are stupid, the heated seat control that roles under my leg when I get out and into my car, brilliant place to put it.

    To be honest it feels refreshing to see car people talk about the positives for once. You are generally pretty conservative when it comes to cars. You know, keeping it basic etc. That is not me complaining about car people btw. I love cars myself. It is just something I noticed. I do understand that modern cars sometimes go too far and add too much complexity, but I also think that they are improving things.

    • @person.w9780
      @person.w9780 5 лет назад +8

      The thing that often bothers me about car people, on this site at least, is that they're always complaining about modern cars. You'll always see people completely trash modern cars and not even acknowledge the positive aspects of modern cars.

    • @ogmechsftw
      @ogmechsftw 5 лет назад +9

      @@person.w9780 It's the result of a narrow-minded, somewhat elitist perspective on cars. Car enthusiasts care about cars, so obviously we want to be the know-it-alls about cars, right? It makes it hard to accept major shifts in the car world, as suddenly something beloved could become obsolete. Car enthusiasts also tend to focus on the performance and "feel" aspects of cars and disregard everything else, so their opinions tend exceptionally biased.
      Sure, we love our manuals. We love our 90s icons. We love that raw, visceral feel. Some even enjoy legitimately dangerous cars for the thrill of it all. But just because we love it doesn't make it better. A true hard-to-swallow pill.

    • @person.w9780

      @@ogmechsftw Completely agree. I love cars as much as the next guy, but I feel like we should have a more open mind when it comes to advancments in car tech. It just annoys me sometimes when I see legitimately great modern cars bring constantly bashed and over like by a lot of car enthusiasts.
      Maybe I'm too young to see where they're coming from (or the fact that I don't even have my G2 yet), but I find myself disagreeing with a lot of other car enthusiasts when it comes to modern cars.

    • @WhateverHappenedToFun
      @WhateverHappenedToFun 5 лет назад +2

      But this video is completely useless! You can say these things also 10 years ago! Or even 50 years ago!
      Of course cars inside are better than before but there isn't nothing exceptional!
      It's the natural technological progress that can't be stopped or put in reverse, cars will be better 10 years from now, it's not surprising.
      A video about best trends should talk about things that aren't bounded to the progress that is entangled in our society.
      If you talk about worst trends you're talkin' about fake noise, modern SUV being produced by every goddamn brand or bumpers that are flimsy, painted and fragile and this stuff isn't in the same level of the technological progress.
      In the '70s you can say that a good trends are the muscle cars and the vanning universe for example, now all you got is "the magical inside"... it's not enough!
      A good trend is something that goes beyond technological progress, it's something that's related to the feelings.

    I'd personally say that navigation systems are one of the best improvements in terms of infotainment related technology. Finally manufacturers are ditching their own home-cooked systems in favor of partnerships with brands like Garmin, or just installing Apple car play (and similar android features) instead. Just let the people who make a living out of this handle the tech, instead of trying to do it half assed themselves. Other than that, screens in general subtract from the whole ergonomics point, to a degree where ergonomic usability was actually much higher in older cars, because all the frequently used features were always there when you needed them, and they could be operated without looking, and even with gloves on if weather is chilly. Now you gotta go through 3 menus on a screen, just to heat your seats.. That's the exact opposite of ergonomic.

      Except the 1 touch turn signal system facilitates bad habits. The point of indicators was to communicate to other drivers that you are about to change lanes or make a turn and the indicator should be turned on before you make your move. Now, I see people increasingly change lane or make the turn and then - afterwards - reflexively turn their indicators. The point of letting other drivers ahead of time of your intended move is now lost and people absent-mindedly get used to it. This is a perfect example (not the only one) where technology fails to fix a human problem. It is more difficult to un-learn bad habits than learn good ones.

There were 2 lanes on my side of the entrance that curve to the left out of the parking lot and I was in the left lane. When the light turned green me and the SUV beside me in the right lane started to go around the curve, She was slightly ahead of me thankfully because all of a sudden her SUV swerved half way into my lane. Luckily she was ahead of me by a half of a car length and I was able to brake fast enough to keep her from slamming into the right side of my car. I looked and I could see her holding a smartphone in her left hand talking on it. Fkn idiot! Again, it looked like a newer larger model SUV, 30k easily. Had to have had hands free bluetooth. Are these people too lazy to link thier phone? Too dumb to know how? My Ford has the sync. As soon as I start my car, my phone automatically links to the system as long as the bluetooth (It is always on) is enabled on my phone. Someone calls, I can press the phone icon on my steering wheel and a microphone in the headliner picks up my voice and the callers voice comes through the cars stereo speakers. If i get a call that I don't recognize I let voice mail take it. i figure if it's an important call, they'll leave a voicemail message, if they don't it's probably a telemarketer. But regardless, some people are more easily distracted than others. Ever been behind a car with 2 people in the front seat talking? And the driver, every time they talk to the passenger they turn thier head to talk to the passenger? I don't do that. If I'm talking to a passenger I keep my head forward eyes front, because I know the passenger will hear my voice without me turning my head towards them.

    Also, regarding tire improvements:
    It’s worth adding that quite a few cars nowadays are sold without spare tires, and quite plausibly just don’t need them. Best I can recall, I haven’t had to perform an emergency roadside tire repair for ... probably 25-30 years, and I drive considerably more than average.
    However, I have had a fair number of slow (initially!) leaks, so I find it valuable to keep a 12V tire pump in the car.
    I also agree with your point regarding low-rolling-resistance economy tires: They definitely have much better traction and cornering than before.

    About the part on factory audio systems. The base components are low quality and that largely stands with premium systems as well. Most improvements come from dsp and there's a limit to what you can achieve that way. I'm personally fine with this approach as an average consumer can tolerate this sound daily while I end up paying less for the system I'm going to replace immediately. The biggest drawback is the insane level of integration of different systems preventing the replacement of the head unit. Being stuck with a factory radio that lets me do virtually zero customization is a pain in the ass. Try replacing it and you lose climate control, navigation, door and seat belt chimes, and basically any kind of setup options you had to your car. If factory source units suddenly came with digital outputs that don't alter the signal I'd feel like we stepped into 2005.

    • @UnitZER0
      @UnitZER0 5 лет назад

      The simplest workaround is to replace the speakers with top-quality ones, set the head output as flat as you can, and then use an external unit for all your audio processing. I use an old S5, with ViPER, and it has worked out beautifully so far.

    • @frankthetankricard
      @frankthetankricard 5 лет назад

      Audio control has some DPS units that can flatten the signal beautifully so there are definitely options. Aftermarket manufacturers are doing their best to keep up with current trends and have at least some options available. However I'd much prefer an aftermarket head unit if fitting one was an option.

Stuff like fuel economy, engine performance, safety tech, and structural design and integrity are going to improve and become more standard. No automotive manufacturer is going to say "hey this trend of side-curtain airbags is getting really old. Let's ditch the idea!".
    Your video complaining about say, plasti-chrome and tablet-mounted-style infotainment screens? Those are trends. They will die when people stop caring for them. Those can easily be changed through manufacturer/customer preference. If you wanted a trend, you could say (and I'm not saying these are good or bad but) plug-in hybrid electric powertrains, semi-autonomous driving capabilities/assistive technologies, LED accent lighting, the floating-design roofs, the move from sedans to CUVs, etc.

    my no#1 is safety/driver support systems. It's good to have more airbags, better materials to mitigate impact energy (I am sure you have a word in English for that, sorry I am not a native speaker), but it's better to have an emergency brake, pedestrian detection, automated evasion system or better traction control, to avoid the accident at all. especially when we find it not only in MB S class limo - but in kia ceed or ford focus.

    • @Fayheurblode
      @Fayheurblode 5 лет назад +3

    • @michalklucz6907
      @michalklucz6907 5 лет назад

      Fayheurblode absolutely! However, you cannot provide the same amount of crumple zones (got it from wiki, don't know if that's the correct word) in ford focus and ford expedition. IF they hit each other in a head collision, the guy from focus will suffer from deacceleration related G-force twice harder (with my assumption that front of the expedition is two times longer than focus) than the guy from expedition [if I remember the physic lesson from my high school correctly. but it was 20 years ago]).
      So the best way to provide more chances to survive for a focus guy is to slow down both cars before they hit each other. Because IF you hit something there is a lot of stuff (physic laws mostly) that you cannot change. but if you can prevent the accident, it's a huge win for you, the other guy, both families and insurance companies.

But wire-only steering and brakes sounds like a recipe for disaster. With a computer-controlled mechanical system, at least when the computer craps itself we still have that mechanical system as a backup. It may not be great, it may be heavy and require some muscle...but at least it's still there.

    Gigantic improvements in automatic transmissions, how is this not mentioned?!

    • @Toastmaster_5000
      @Toastmaster_5000 5 лет назад +2

      Because there almost just as many problems with automatics as there are improvements.
      Many DCTs have had significant shifting and stalling issues (especially from VW and Ford).
      A lot of the "slushbox" automatics have reliability issues (particularly with Honda and Chrysler-group cars).
      CVTs from around 5 or so years ago were horrendously unreliable (Nissan). Sure, they're a hell of a lot better today, but everyone blindly hates them because they can't adjust to change.
      Of course, there are a few automatics out there that have really dramatically improved in the past 15 years, but there are far too many issues for them to be generalized as overall better.

      @@Toastmaster_5000 Honda & Chrysler have made unreliable automatics for over 30 years. At least now they don't suck till they break, as opposed to the good old days when they sucked till they broke, at which point they sucked more. Going from my old 5 speed ZF, a world class transmission in it's day, to their new 8 speed unit was a revelation. For comparison, I've got a 6 speed getrag for when I'm not stuck in city traffic.

    • @scottfurlong5475

      I agree, automatic transmissions are far better than they used to be. There have been some growing pains with advancements in technology with the electrification of automatic transmissions but at least they don't burn up clutches or vomit gears and springs anymore.

    • @emotionz3
      @emotionz3 5 лет назад +1

      Overall, automatic transmission failure rates, especially recalls, have gone up significantly in the last 7-8 years. CVT's and DCT's are inherently less reliable than a slushbox\torque converter transmission. CVT's fail no matter how often you change the fluid because the drive belt is eventually going to stretch beyond the tensioner tolerance. DCT's will inherently fail because like a manual transmission they have clutch packs, which costs thousands to replace instead of hundreds.
      Most transmission failures from the 80's and 90's era came down to poor cooling due to spent fluid. People simply didn't maintain them as more and more people moved away from manual transmissions which are for all intents and purposes maintenance free until you replace the clutch at 150k for a few hundred bucks, at which time you replace $20 in gear oil. Transmissions (especially those from Japan, specifically Aisin) in the 2000's were and still are incredibly reliable even with little maintenance and much abuse.
      Meanwhile I don't know a single person with a 'modern' Nissan, Ford, or Audi that hasn't had a transmission problem that is usually so expensive to fix they dump the vehicle.

He showed us a close up picture of two cars that were in an accident and he asked how fast we thought these two cars were going when they crashed. There weren't any major dents or anything, so we said below 10 miles an hour. He showed us a second photo of the same two cars, but zoomed out. There was blood all over the windshields. All the safety advancements from airbags(sodium azide reaction, which is literally an explosive) to 3 point seat belts to whiplash protection built into the seat headrests. It is terrifying that steering and braking is fly-by-wire. If you lose power, you're screwed. If I lose power in my "old" 2004 Explorer, I can still operate the brakes and steering. They're more stiff, but I can still control the vehicle. If there is not a mechanical link, you lose redundancy, and that's a really bad thing.
    It is true that technology has done a lot to improve cars. I drove my sister's new Dodge Challenger and it was awesome. It's RWD and has decent styling. Even the V6 version can haul ass! It also has amazing cornering. I drove that thing on a twisting mountain road with hairpin turns at 15-20MPH higher speed than I used to drive, and had excellent control the whole time. This is one of the few vehicles I would be willing to consider if I had to buy a new car.
    I wish more companies would build cars that have the classic styling of an older car and are RWD, but have the advancements of new technology and engineering without sacrificing user-serviceability or mechanical control. Also, I don't want screens or an infotainment system.
    Basically, I would like to see a modern car that has the benefits of modern technology and engineering without the drawbacks that are imposed by the newer designs we currently have.
