The Chandley's a fan favorite in large part because it's terrifyingly good in game terms. You want a beatstick of a combat vessel in the STTCS rules, it's a definite go-to choice.
I liked the Chandley. 1) She did good in the FASA game, solid status and back story too. 2) Of the federation FASA lead minis she was kind of easy to assemble, glue, and paint.
-No guys it doesn't need a secondary hull just like Miranda doesn't need a secondary hull. -The warp core like with Miranda is likely horizontal -I agree the engines are too far down to maintain a stable warp field -The pylons are nothing like the Connie, It's not a kitbash. Kitbash refers to ships like USS Centuar, New Orleans and USS Curry. -A troop transport doesn't need to get any where fast but it does need to get out fast. -Picture at 21:36 is from Bridge Commander
It is a particular favorite of many who played ST the RPG...Fasa drawing at end of video is the Chandley I remember, not that particular 3d model...still in shock they chose Northhampton over Chandley =P
I think the reason why people like the ship was, not only did people like the design, but if you played the old game, it was a great ship to have in a battle and was really effective in the game.
I first saw the ship back in my college days when I first played FASA Star Trek. I always liked the ship because it fits a solid role in a fleet. For its missions a large secondary hull seemed to make sense.
same here. most of the marine and combat areas were replaced with science modules and we called it Discovery. keep in mind this was back in the 80’s. WAAAY before the current incarnation.
Its not really fair to compare this design with everything that came after it . Please keep in mind all the FASA ships were created with nothing to go on other then what lead up to ST III The search for Spock . A lot of the reasons why this ship ( i have the miniature on my book shelf as well as a few others ) and the rest are so beloved is because prior to TNG ,if you loved the ST ships this is all we had to gaze at . The Chandley ( all of FASA ) may not have aged well in modern cannon but at the time they were super cool
+Star Trek Theory Personally i think half the Klingon ships ( wasn't there a ship called the "Mauler " ? ) could be placed into modern canon as well as the less dramatic Starfleet ships . I had the ship recognition manual and sold it when i was much much younger and regret it to this day . FASA stretched when it came to a lot of there ships designs but they had some neat ideas . I never followed SFB but i recall not being thrilled with any of it at the time ....and yes "old girlfriends "indeed ;)
hello Captain and Commander thank you again for another trek yards . despite how bizarre this ship is I think it's really cool. And thank you for doing an episode on it. you guys helped make my day I appreciate it. be safe
I thought the Chandley was a little out there back in the 90's, but I've grown to love her. I don't think she'd look better with the warp pylons any shorter than they are in the FASA schematic. I think it suggests Federation and Romulan ship designs share a common root in Vulcan technology (The Chandley looks like a kitbash of the TOS Romulan Bird of Prey). It's too bad the Vulcan ships in Enterprise are so different. It would have made too much sense if the saucer hull had come from the Vulcans. Then we would see the missing link between the Connie and the Romulan Bird of Prey.
The sections aft of the saucer were Marine compartments. In addition to their quarters, there was a large section with movable panels where they could train to board alien ships etc. Essentially a predecessor to 24th century holodecks.
Beauty is definitely in the eye of the beholder... You both love the Northampton-class (which I think is absolutely hideous), and you both are ambivalent toward the Chandley-class (which I ADORE). Oh, and Samuel? How did you even go about picking your Top Ten FASA ships if you'd never even seen the Chandley before? Color me confused.
I made it to assistant chief engineer on the chandley cruiser in Halifax during the mid 80's. Transfered to a royal proxima class as chief engineer and weapons specialist. My character was vulcanoid plus one quarter betazed. Loved the time on the chandlery, learnt a lot.
I use to Play FASA back when it came out and our favorite ship to kit bash was the Chandley. I wish I still has the Excelsior-Chandley with Miranda weapons rollbar my friend made. Its clam to fame was it was the first design to combine a combat vessel with a a sizable troop complement (250) which it could beam into combat in under 2 minutes.
we used the chandley class in our role playing game. we called her Discovery. at that time, she wasnt a frigate but a dedicated science ship. our shuttle bays were smaller and aft facing and dual deflector arrays were located in the port and starboard wing sections. additional sensor pallets were located on the wings as well allowing for more detailed and far ranging sensor scans.
A friend of mine re-designed the Chandley. instead of strictly a troop transport he made it a through deck shuttle carrier, He did an incredible job I wish I still had the blueprints he created.
Chandley is definately one of those ‘she may not look like much kid, but she’s got it where it counts” ships from the Combat Simulator ruleset. When you needed a heavier class of ship that packed a punch, and wasn’t the Constitution (specifically it’s -A refit) …you went with the Chandley. It was a hard hitter.
It's been some years since I last cracked my FASA books. As someone who did some Star Trek RPG, in the Game Master role. I did review the Chandly stats fairly frequently. Unlike Constitution class ships, these were purely military vessels. Contrary to your perceptions. These were among the larger Starfleet warships. Made in far larger numbers. While having substantial marine detachments. A formation of these with thier heavy armaments could be a really big problem for a Klingon Admiral. Klingon ships enjoyed beaming on to Federation ships with a variety of hand held weapons. Not only were the Chandlys an excellent counter to this tactic. Thier battle transporters could beam a substantial number of troops onto an objective. So they were very useful to Game Masters as Starfleet's cavalry come to "save the day" in force.
This was my favourite FASA ship. However, I have always viewed it as a multi-operation ship. A bit like the UK's HMS Ocean. A large supply of shuttles and troops would allow the ship to stay on station for extended planetary operations, re-supply missions etc. I agree the wide engine placement is unusual, but I like the idea that the federation incorporated alien ship design philosophy for the Chandley.
Around the 21/22 minute area there are a couple of shots that make me believe the troop transport areas are located in the outer, top decks of the hanger bays. I was thinking about all that wasted space - too small to park shuttles. Look at the three rows of windows in the top views. These show again in the gold colored 3D shots.
Not sure when the shuttles and troop carrier stuff showed up. I still have my old copy of the FASA Star Trek: Tactical Combat Simulator. In that the Chandley was a torpedo frigate. It had 3 phaser banks around the saucer, 2 forward and 2 aft photon launchers. Stats-wise, it was a fast ship that could punch well above its "frigate" weight.
this ship is hard to wrap my head around I had never seen it before your episode but my first thought when seeing the front view was of one of those little bugs that walks on the water surface tension. shorter pylons more like the Miranda class with a roll bar like mentioned and I think it would maybe come together. but I do understand making a new ship without going to far away from the norm is difficult without knowing when to say whoa! I've gone to far.
The TOS Chandley is from Vintage Starships, by Steven Bacon, it has Pre-TOS Gaming and History, go look for it. It is quite decent (although I went a different route with Pre-TOS Gaming)
I don't remember the top part being shuttle bays, I remember them being re-configurable areas so the marines can practice in different environments. Also according to some (semi-non-canon) sources some were brought out of mothballs during the Dominion war to be hospital ships.
Working on the blueprints for the Chandley Class right at this moment. Even managed to figure out the warp core set up. The Miranda uses its' own Saucer Hull design, much different than the Chandley. The Chandley uses a regular FCA 'Enterprise' primary hul and think of the 'shoulder hangars' and the warp core being in it's own Engineering hull. The actaual warp core tubes are painted on the outer surface of the nacelle pylons. I could go on. She's my favorite multi-purpose ship, and a great fleet support vessel. The back quarter of the primary saucer is shuttlebays and storage. Think of the enterprise shuttlebay but instead of long, from front top back, think side to side. Heh, in my opionion. Definately influenced by the Drell 6 Klingons.
+atticbat1982 I have some other pics in progress at my Facebook, appreciate any feedback there. Got the Ent-A (two of them) coming up from Cali. Once I have that shuttlecraft, I will take pics for scale and organize the flight deck and the aft cargo hold. Goooood times ;) facebook.com/atticbat
20:50 Constructed at the Nimbus III shipyards. I don't know, this doesn't feel like a troop carrier. Maybe if it was a specialized carrier for places where transporters don't work and you need to use shuttles?
When reviewing FASA ships you need to do some in depth research. The shuttle bays do not take up the entire secondary hull. Troop quarters are behind the main shuttle bays. I've played FASA games back when and I love all their ships. I'm also a kitbasher and plan on building a Chandley class ship. When I finish it, I'll send a picture.
Can't remember exactly what it was called, but there was something like the Chandley from FASA, but with the engines right next to the saucer, like the Miranda.
The FASA's 'Ship Construction Manual' the Struts are Half the length, and they are more Verticle so would be more reminiscent to where the 'MIRANDA' Class has theirs, and there are no signs of Shuttle-Bays facing Fore.
i think the warp nacelles are too far away from the ship and think if there is a refit of this class then bring the nacelles closer which will give the ship a smaller profile and reduce the size of the shield bubble. I think for the warp core it might be similar to that of the NX - Class due to limited space, and yes i have noticed the lack of a deflector dish and i think not all ships need a dish just the emitter.
It would make more sense if the sides of the shuttle bays were squared off (too much wasted space in those trapezoids), and if the nacelles were attached with shorter pylons to the bottoms of the shuttle bays. I also agree with the Capt's and Cdr's recommended addition of a roll bar.
as I recall the chandley is a troop carrier. I'd have to consult my friends federation recognition manual. I'd wouldn't mind seeing a 3D of the romulan z-1 Nove from FASA though. take care :)
There is a great mod that you can install in star trek legacy. I fly it all the time. one of my favourite ship designs. I have loved it since playing fasa as a kid. have the pewter model as well.
The U.S.S. Chandley class is a Heavy Frigate. In FASAs Star Trek a Frigate is a ship that is between a Destroyer and a Cruiser. If you guys need information about FASA Federation starship, Contact me. Its warp core is in the same place as the Miranda's (Reliant's). By the way; according to FASA timeline, the Reliant is a refit of the old Anton class cruiser, not the Miranda. The 250 marines were added because of the role of the frigate in Star Fleet. A group of frigates would be sent in to an area and the marines would be deployed by shuttle or troop transporters.
The marines were house in the additional areas that was added to the Constitution-class saucer. The vertical warp core shaft would switch to a horizontal shaft on deck 6 and go to the nacelle struts and then drop down into the nacelles. Yes you are correct about the hanger bays, they are a through deck design (the back is connected to the front, but is divided to reduce the change of an explosion damaging all the shuttles) The forward and aft hanger doors were attached, even though they hanger doors were number 1 through 4.
It would be nice to see this ship developed further. There are some interesting concepts, but I think it would look better if there was a Miranda style variant. :-)
I have to say I am one of those who considers the chandley class one of my favorites. It looks very aggressive and bold. I do not think it is a kitbash at all; it fairly distinctive. I think there are several renders that put the nacelle pylons too inboard and corrupt the look of this ship, the original fasa designs have the nacelles fairly wide which gives it its aggressive appearance. I'll take this over a centaur any day.
in regard to the shuttle bays being offset.. does it really matter..? I mean, artificial gravity and all... it could be completely sideways. :) I'm a new sub/fan. I appreciate your archives and technical reviews and have learned a lot.
Fasa design team: Take a saucer and attach things to it. Because that's how the connie was created. Now do this again and again. Saucer and things, saucer and things. Doesn't need to make sense or look good as long as it has a saucer and things.
What you keep calling the "shuttle bays" are Marine barracks. The Chandley was a frigate which was designed to kick ass, take down names, and land Marines in trouble spots. .
+Stuart Lynn Sexton's Frontier Zone Books. Actually they are both. There are through deck bays inboard,(those doors that we saw in some of the shots.) so that she can launch and recover craft at the same time.(fore doors launching aft doors recovering.) The out board parts with all of the windows are the troop barracks . The ship crew of course live in the saucer.
You are correct, sir! I was in a hurry when I typed my above comment. I should have said that they weren't just shuttle bays. So, we are in total agreement. God catch.
Still waiting for a complete video...first of all, the 3d models are not a perfect adaption of the FASA drawings I remember. Love you channel by the way,lol....if you played the ST RPG ...you would realize why the Chandley was so popular, mainly do to its firepower and adaptability. Maybe read the FASA description again? ...this link is a more accurate representation of 1 of my favorite ships...In fact, it addresses some of TREK YARDS questions. ruclips.net/video/CMYOE_ZvcIE/видео.html Really enjoy all the work you guys put in! Hope you guys address the Chandley class again using FASA info. I remember thinking the Northhampton class was not an immediate favorite of mine,lol...I bet The Chandley might grow on you!
It's a matter of tastes , didn't mean to come across as hating you not having her on your list, after all you both like those ships with the enclosed warp nacelles that I hate visually from every angle other then topside down. I think once you look into the info on the class it will make more sense, I'll just toss at you that the side bays also house the marine barracks.
Yank the whole shuttle bay off spin it around and slap it back on with the flair pointed rearward and hang the nacelles directly under it. It still wouldn't look more than passable. But at last it wouldn't look like a garbage scow, Or maybe like it should be hauled away as garbage.
I’m grateful FASA help support StarTrek during the early years with its rich various starships & its backstories. Notice most FASA ships look good from certain angles but awful from other angles....
Interesting shape but agree the shuttle bays seem off.... I was thinking it might work better if the shuttle bays were large torpedo pods. The nacelle struts look weird. .... good point about wanting a fast troop ship but in the real world troop ships are slow and bulky. TOS version with the hanging deflector...yuk
Never really like the Chandley...thought it was too wide. I still have nearly all of the old Fasa ST starship simulator game books, just missing the RPG elements or the game. Maybe if the Chandley pulled the nacelles in closer and added either a secondary hull slung underneath or an Oberth type secondary hull...make it look more like the USS Korolev from Axanar.
Yeah, not digging this at all. Looks like an intoxicated kit bash. I agree that it would be best served as a redesigned mission specific Miranda class variant.
boy, this FASA ship is a mess, I would have made the shuttle bays more semeterical and the warp struts inverted and reversed like they are on the connie. I agree with the roll bar concept. it evens out the design.
Sorry, the ship you are looking at is a bastardized version of the ship. The way she REALLY looks is in this video here. ruclips.net/video/CMYOE_ZvcIE/видео.html
Not... not a fan, to be honest. It has a nice idea but this should've been a Miranda variant - take a Miranda and stick those romulan shoulderpad-shuttlebays on the top of the backside. Or extend the already existing Miranda shuttlebays.
The Chandley's a fan favorite in large part because it's terrifyingly good in game terms. You want a beatstick of a combat vessel in the STTCS rules, it's a definite go-to choice.
It's like the D-7 and Ares class had a baby, which was raised in a Miranda-class neighborhood, near the Romulan Neutral Zone.
You forgot getting permanent scars from contracting the mumps.
I loved this class when playing the old FASA game. Good shields, 6 phasers and two torpedoes. It looks GREAT too.
I liked the Chandley. 1) She did good in the FASA game, solid status and back story too. 2) Of the federation FASA lead minis she was kind of easy to assemble, glue, and paint.

Chandley Class was used for chasing pirates. The WIng shaped deck sections had convertable decks for the marines to train on.
I first saw the ship back in my college days when I first played FASA Star Trek. I always liked the ship because it fits a solid role in a fleet. For its missions a large secondary hull seemed to make sense.

i guess it is kinda randomly asking but does anyone know of a good site to stream new tv shows online ?
@Jared Hudson I would suggest flixzone. Just google for it =)
@Devin Kobe yea, I've been watching on flixzone for months myself :D
@Devin Kobe thanks, signed up and it seems like they got a lot of movies there =) Appreciate it!!
Our Starfleet International chapter ship was a Chandley class. The USS Nighthawk, NCC 2301. In fact, I was her first Chief Engineer.

I never played a game without this ship in my fleet, it was awesome!!!
I have my FASA Chandley model !
I've got a couple of Chandleys in 1:2500 scale to go with the various three piece styrene model sets. Check Shapeways for several models on offer.
RE : warp core placement, Stuart is right he warp core is horizontally mounted. like the conny transport ships.
I think this was the ship that was on the cover of the Star Ship Construction Manual. Was always my favorite FASA ship.

this ship hurts my eyes to look at it!

I used the hell out of this ship back in HS and was awesome with it.
Anyone else have the FASA adventure/supplement titled "Where Has All the Glory Gone?" Sooooooo good. LOVE the Chandley-class.

BTW I do agree with bringing the wings up so it's not so tall from the side angle, looks much better and makes for a smaller target.
the 4 view drawing at the 20 minutes mark was from the FASA ship recognition manual

Dam , thats fugley
Personally, I would like it as a DS9/Voyager version of it. Now that would be cool, and we can call it the Foley Class.

Not trying to give "The Captain" a hard time, just surprised he did not know more about The Chandley from FASA info...it has been a while, lol
God catch.
the ship was modular and could accommodate both.
Not a fan of the shoulder pads... I personally prefer it when the saucer is widest part of the ship's body...

Really enjoy all the work you guys put in! Hope you guys address the Chandley class again using FASA info. I remember thinking the Northhampton class was not an immediate favorite of mine,lol...I bet The Chandley might grow on you!
It's got a ship on its shoulder. 😂
It makes no sense why the warp nacelles are located that far away from the ship. It's length is actually twice the width than the beam, Fore and Aft.
Looks like Starfleet where stoned when they designed it lol.
Notice most FASA ships look good from certain angles but awful from other angles....
the chandley class is a zero favorite the pylons are wrong its just is wrong its a ship someone threwup on
Looks like a take on a tos romulan ship
Why are there so many different classes of ships in the same time frame spare parts availability must be a nightmare?
Thanks Trekyards for your review. I have to admit the pylons are too long.
Agreed Capt. The Pylons are waaay too long.
Eeek!
Some of the angles look D7-esque to me
It does need abit more fleshing out
Not fond of it but it is somewhat similar to the Pegasus which i love.
instead of a vertical Warp core a horizontal one
Yeah, not digging this at all. Looks like an intoxicated kit bash. I agree that it would be best served as a redesigned mission specific Miranda class variant.
Do the Midway Carrier Class please
Rimward I meant to type
That thing is hideous. Ugh...
Not a fan of this ship either. The nacelle arrangement makes no sense, the pylons are too unwieldy and ugly, and the parts above the saucer bother me.
A reliant bird of prey?
Beautiful ship but the mini for it was horrible, it simply was near impossible to put the pylons on straight.
boy, this FASA ship is a mess, I would have made the shuttle bays more semeterical and the warp struts inverted and reversed like they are on the connie. I agree with the roll bar concept. it evens out the design.
Does look cartoone, it would be better as a starbase than a ship. mabe the first Defiant draw if you remove the nacel
I don't like the Chandley. I find most of these FASA ships to be absolutely horrid.
Sorry, the ship you are looking at is a bastardized version of the ship. The way she REALLY looks is in this video here.

That's a really great render. :)
Not sleek
Hate this design. It looks like someone stamped on a Miranda class.
Not... not a fan, to be honest. It has a nice idea but this should've been a Miranda variant - take a Miranda and stick those romulan shoulderpad-shuttlebays on the top of the backside. Or extend the already existing Miranda shuttlebays.
I think the Miranda wouldn't look right
scimitar warbird.
